This is a study of how multicultural competence is supplied within a centralized purchasing group of librarians in Gothenburg. It is also an investigation in librarians' working methods in purchase of multilingual media and their approaches to multilingual users' needs and demands. The purpose is thus to reach a deeper understanding of these librarians' multicultural competence and their work with multilingual media in relation to user's demand. This since we in prior work experience faced obstacles with the acquisition of multilingual media. This is problematic in a diverse society where all needs and demands should be fulfilled within the public libraries. We based our theory in research regarding multicultural competence, with an approach to the concept as a process that is developing over time. The study is conducted in Gothenburg, we found that the city's primary working method is a centralized purchasing group from different branch libraries. Within this group we made semi-structured interviews to assemble data. These interviews concerned if and how the librarians use multicultural competence in the purchasing group, how they approach and use them in their working methods and strategies, and, if and how, they relate to Gothenburg's districts populations and their demands. We proceeded thus from the librarians' perspective. We found, along the interviews, that the librarians were all multicultural competent but that the working methods in some cases could limit their work. The working methods could also in some cases limit their work to satisfy demand.

The underlying purpose of this study is to see whether a library focused solely on providing literature in other languages than Swedish serves as a unifying, integrating force, or as an agent for division and exclusion. The study focuses on the International Library in Stockholm. The authors have created a profile of the visitors of the selected library, concerning their characteristics, their library habits and their perceptions of the International library. This profile has then been compared with the staff’s perception of the visitors as a group. To assemble data in order to create a profile of the visitors, a survey has been conducted looking into factors such as age, language, native country, educational level, reasons for coming to the library and attitudes towards the library. A small group of the staff, five persons, have been interviewed to inquire about their attitudes towards and perceptions of the visitors, as well as attitudes towards issues such as multilingualism, and their estimation of the importance of and right to literature in ones mother tongue. The authors found that the visitors are a very heterogeneous group of people, with various backgrounds and language skills. A larger number than expected were Swedish speaking and ethnic Swedes. The staff’s impression of the visitors was largely in accordance with our findings. The staff expressed a strong belief in the idea that access to literature in one’s mother tongue can actually be helpful when one is trying to settle in a new country. Although other libraries may be reluctant to handle literature in foreign languages, the staff of the International Library feels that their expertise helps to ensure the inhabitants of the greater Stockholm area good quality and access to literature in many languages. / Uppsatsnivå: D

I den här uppsatsen görs en kvalitativ samtalsanalytisk analys av sammanlagt åtta narrativer. Dessa är hämtade ur intervjuer med en lärare och en elev vid Cirkus Cirkörs dåvarande utbildning Cirkuspiloterna - en internationell utbildning där lärare och elever ofta inte hade ett gemensamt språk att mötas i. Syftet med analysen är att synliggöra likheter och skillnader mellan hur läraren och eleven berättar berättelser om händelser som har att göra med den språkliga situationen på skolan - vilken funktion berättelserna har i respektive intervju, samt vilka attityder till språksituationen som speglas i narrativerna. Analysen visar att läraren, till skillnad från eleven, verkar ha en färdig berättelserepertoar och att berättelserna fungerar som exempel i lärarens argumentation. För eleven verkar istället berättelserna utgöra en resurs att resonera sig fram till svar på intervjufrågorna, och elevens berättelser ger ett intryck av att födas i ögonblicket snarare än att vara en del av ett etablerat berättande. Både lärarens och elevens narrativ genomsyras av tydligt positiva attityder till språksituationen på skolan, men analysen visar en mer medveten och aktiv uppskattning från lärarens sida.

Syftet med studien är att undersöka attityder hos högstadieelever till varieteterna skånska, norrländska och svenska på mångspråkig grund. Ett annat syfte är att ta reda på om dessa ungdomar anser svenska på mångspråkig grund vara en dialekt, och om svaren varierar utifrån kön och första- och andraspråkstalare. Ett annat perspektiv som jag även kommer att presentera är den didaktiska aspekten på språklig varietet och vilka pedagogiska faktorer som kan påverka elevernas attityd till dialekt.En enkätundersökning utfördes på två könshomogena grupper, där eleverna fick lyssna på inspelningar av de tre olika språkliga varieteterna. Resultaten av informanternas definitioner av dialekt är följande: geografiskt, tids- och platsbundet och språkligt släktskap. Ungdomarnas definition av dialekt stämmer överens med forskarnas, det vill säga tal som är typiskt för ett geografiskt område, även om ungdomarna använder andra ord. Enligt undersökningen varierade ungdomarnas attityd till språkliga varieteter mellan kön och till en viss del mellan första- och andraspråkstalare. Flickorna valde fler positiva uttryck än pojkarna till varje dialekt, förutom till svenska på mångspråkig grund som talades av mannen, det som pojkarna var mest positiva till. Andraspråkstalarna var något mer positiva till svenska på mångspråkig grund än förstaspråkstalarna.
