Kunskapen och utvecklingen av komplicerade träsammansättningar har lettsav japanska hantverkare. Europa har också en gammal tradition avträfogningar, främst i husbyggnation med stolpverkskonstruktion.Denna uppsats belyser två avancerade sammanfogningar i trä, fyrsidigsvanhalssammansättning och raffinerad sned skarvsammansättning. Vanligtvisanvända i byggnadskonstruktioner men i detta examensarbete är de en del aven demonterbar sittmöbel. Den ledande japanska trätraditionens historiabeskrivs kortfattat. Den mest omfattande delen i uppsatsen redovisar en möjligtillverkningsprocess för vardera sammansättning med hjälp avträbearbetningsmaskiner. Tillvägagångssättet beskrivs i text och bild.Resultaten av tillverkningen tas upp i ett kapitel och visar att det är fulltmöjligt att framställa de två olika fogningarna maskinellt, i flera antal och medbibehållen precision.Avslutningsvis diskuteras uppkomna tankar och vikten av hållbarhet och estetik.

Detta examensarbete tar med er på en resa genom en designprocess. Den började i enenkel fråga om hur jag går tillväga för att utifrån en pjäs göra en möbel, men blev till en djupdykning i mitt eget sätt att arbeta och en psykologisk analys av någon som inte finns.Jag har med avstamp i August Strindbergs pjäs Ett Drömspel försökt designa en möbel som solidifierar karaktären ”Officern”. Efter analyser bestämde jag att denna möbel skulle vara ett skåp. Jag har sammanfört mina tidigare erfarenheter från teateranalys med möbeldesign för att försöka svara på frågorna: Hur jag går tillväga för att skapa en möbel som ska personifiera/ konkretisera en karaktär ur en pjäs och i förlängningen sammanfatta ett dramatiskt verk? Hur ser en fungerande designprocess ut för mig? Karaktären ”Officern” är stram och tillknäppt med ett hårt yttre, men döljer en insida som går att likna vid ett oskyldigt barn. Mitt skåp skulle spegla detta och det blev en möbel där jag i gestaltningen försökte utmana vad ett skåp kan vara. Skåpet har en traditionell utsida som ger glimtar av en inre scen, eller drama, som går att finna inuti. Att utforska min designprocess var syftet med denna uppsats, och i detta utforskandevisade sig att utgå från ett Ett Drömspel vara en lämplig allegori. Designprocessen har emellanåt varit kaotisk, ologisk och tumultartad, precis som pjäsen. Men precis som det allteftersom i Ett drömspel framträder mönster, samband och djup, så har det också gjort i min designprocess och i det har jag lärt känna mitt eget skapande på ett djupare sätt. / This thesis invites you the reader on a journey through a design process. It started with a simple question of how I would go about making a piece of furniture based on a play but became a deep exploration into my own way of working and a psychological analysis of someone who does not exist. Based on August Strindberg’s play A Dream Play, I have tried to design a piece of furniture that solidifies the character “The Officer”. After analysis I decided this furniture to be a cabinet. I have combined my previous experiences from theater analysis with furniture design to try to answer the questions: How do I go about creating a piece of furniture that will personify/concretize a character from a play and at the same time summarize a dramatic work? What does a working design process look like for me? The character “The Officer” is proud and tightly wound with a hard exterior but hides an inside that can be compared to that of an innocent child. My cabinet should reflect this, and it became a piece of furniture where I tried to challenge the definition of what a cabinet can be. The cabinet has a traditional exterior that gives glimpses of an interior scene, or drama, that can be found inside. Exploring my design process was the purpose of this essay, and in this exploration, using a A Dream Play as a starting point turned out to be a suitable allegory. The design process has at times been chaotic, illogical and tumultuous, just like the play. But just as it does in the play, patterns, connections and depth emerged, as it has in my design process and in that I have gotten to know my own creative process in a deeper way.

Mitt examensarbete handlar om konstruktioner. Studien handlar om att lyfta blicken och titta på sammansättningar på ett större plan för att hitta nya lösningar på gamla problem.  Jag har i min studie låtit mig inspireras av material och konstruktioner som ligger långt ifrån träindustrin och materialet trä. Genom ett systematiskt insamlande av konstruktioner och vidare analyser har jag, med hjälp av skisser och tester, modifierat dessa till fungerande träkonstruktioner. Det handlar om att skaffa sig en perspektivrikedom som tillåter en att se lösningar till sitt eget fält i sin omvärld, vilket kan leda till nya innovativa träkonstruktioner. Detta är en metod som inte bara fungerar till möbelbranschen utan till många andra fält som kan vinna på att studera lösningar utanför sin egen ram och tradition. Resultatet mynnade ut i en prototyp med en konstruktion som är inspirerad av en stickkontakt/vägguttag. Konstruktionen är intuitiv och demonterbar vilket ska leda till ökad förståelse för konstruktioner hos användaren och en större uppskattning för hantverket. / My thesis I study structures and joints. It is about lifting your eyes and looking at compositions on a larger scale to find new solutions to old problems. I have been inspired by materials and structures that are far away from the wood industry and the material wood. I have systematically collected structures and joints and analysed them. With further sketching and testing, they have been modified to work as wooden joints and structures. It’s about acquiring a ”wealth of perspective” that allows you to see solutions to your own field in your surroundings, which could lead to new innovative wooden structures. This is a method which not only works for the furniture industry but a lot of other fields that could evolve in studying solutions outside their own framework and tradition The result ended up in prototype with a joint inspired from a socket/wall socket. The joint is intuitive and demountable which could lead to increased understanding of structures and joints for the user and a greater appreciation of the craft.

Detta arbete är en undersökning genom hantverket. Målet med arbetet är att hitta min hantverksidentitet och tänkbara yrkesroll vilket jag gör med stöd i arbetets utgångspunkter. Dessa utgångspunkter är samtal med andra och samtal med mig själv samt utgångspunkter som bygger på min anknytning till radbyn Bonäs intill Våmhus socken i Dalarna och dess tillhörande hantverkshistoria inom hårarbetet. Efter att jag utvärderat dessa utgångspunkter samt det formspråk som jag ser har präglat mina arbeten under min utbildning på Malmstens, har jag genomfört en gestaltningsprocess som utmynnar i en produkt som grundar sig i en till möbelsnickaryrkets förekommande produkter. Slutresultatet är en tänkbar hantverksidentitet som jag kan bära med mig tillsammans med utbildningen ut i arbetslivet. / This work is an investigation through the craft. The aim of the work is to find my craft identity and imaginable professional role, which I do with support in the datums of the work. Those datums are conversations with others and conversations with myself, while the other datums are based on my connection to the linear village of Bonäs next to the parish Våmhus in Dalarna and its associated crafts history in the work of hair jewellery craft. After evaluating these datums and also the form language that characterized my work during my education at Malmstens, I continued the investigation trough a materialized process wich resulted in a product existing in the furniture carpentry profession. The result is a conceivable craft identity that I can carry with me along with my education into my occupational journey.

Vid samma tid som mitt kandidatprojekt förväntas börja slår en av dom alvarligaste pandemierna i modern tid slog till mot Sverige och världen. Alla tidigare planer måste nu jämföras mot dom nya förutsättningar som pandemin skapar och alla medborgare måste justera sina prioriteringar. Ur den här krisen återuppväcktes min nyfikenhet på arbete i hemmiljö. Stora delar av Sveriges befolkning sitter i självkarantän och otaliga konstnärer, kulturarbetare, designers och arkitekter jobbar nu hemifrån med sitt praktiska hantverk. I mitt kandidatprojekt vill jag få en större förståelse för vilka behov personer med kreativa yrken har när dom arbetar hemifrån. Målet med projektet är att ta fram ett arbetsbord som möjliggör praktiskt kreativt arbete i hemmiljö och underlättar för användaren. Genom att använda mig av webbaserade tjänster tog jag kontakt med användare som arbetar hemifrån och tog reda på vad som är viktigt för dom, när det kommer till den yta de använder för att utföra sitt kreativa arbete. Min undersökning visar att användarna värdesätter stabilitet, mycket materialförvaring och att möbeln upplevs som mer öppen än avskärmad högt. Resultatet av arbetet är ett mycket styvt och stabilt arbetsbord för hemmiljö med en utbytbar skiva, modulär förvaringslösning för bänkredskap och material och vibrationsabsorberande gummielement för ljuddämpning. / At the same time as my bachelor thesis is expected to begin, one of the most serious pandemics in modern times hit Sweden and the world. All previous plans must now be compared against the new conditions created by the pandemic and all citizens must adjust their priorities accordingly. Out of this crisis, my curiosity about working in a home environment was resurrected. Large parts of Sweden's population are in self-quarantine and countless artists, cultural workers, designers and architects now work from home with their hands-on craft. With my bachelor thesis, I want to gain a greater understanding of the needs of people with creative professions working from home. The goal of the project is to create a workbench that enables and improve physical creative work in the home environment. Through web-based services, I contacted users who work from home and found out what is important to them when it comes to their work situation. Based on the users' answers and my research, I designed and produced a piece of furniture that meets many of the requirements that I identified in my work. My research shows that the most important function to fulfill is stability, a lot of material storage and that the furniture is perceived as more open than screend off.

Det här är ett utforskande examensarbete där jag vill lyfta ett hantverk som för många är okänt idag. I egenskap av möbelsnickare har jag undersökt ett besläktat hantverk, bildhuggeri, med syfte att lära mig mer om tekniken och att sprida kunskap om hantverkets möjligheter. En fråga som legat till grund för arbetet är på vilket sätt bildhuggeri kan appliceras på moderna möbler och produkter anpassade för en småskalig produktion. Min grundinställning är att handskurna dekorativa inslag ger ett mervärde åt produkter och att detta bör kunna utnyttjas i en mindre tillverkning. Utifrån intervjuer med yrkesverksamma, egna tester och litteratur har jag gått vidare med en formgivningsprocess. Arbetet har resulterat i en kollektion av produkter med skurna dekorativa inslag, vilka i varierande grad är lämpade för tillverkning i mindre skala. / This is an exploratory work where I would like to draw attention to a craft that is quite unknown by people in general today. As a cabinetmaker I have examined a related craft, woodcarving, with the purpose to learn more about the technique and spread knowledge about the possibilities of the craft. One question I would like to lift is how woodcarving can be applied in modern furniture and products. My approach is that hand carved decorative elements can add value to a product, and that this ought to be possible to practice in a small-scale production. In my work interviews with active woodcarvers, practical tests and literature lead to a process to create a form. The work resulted in a collection of products with wood carved decorative elements, which in a variety of degree are suitable for a small-scale production.

Abstract In this report you will be able to read about the development of a chair. How it is developed through different prototypes and changes step by step. The work is distributed at different stages and based on research and knowledge accumulated from the furniture design education at Malmstens LIU.      One half of the work is the documentation and reflection made before and after the various stages of development. The second half is practical work with the manufacture of prototypes. But description of the manufacture is not included because it can be performed in different ways. However, the results are highlighted with pictures and descriptions of how and why they change.      The purpose is to improve as a designer and through product development teach me to develop my furniture. Demonstrate that tests and prototypes play a significant role in the development and refinement of a product.      The question is: How can product development of a chair, improve my knowledge as a designer? The goal is to achieve an ability and skill to make prototypes and product development. I want to be able to build quickly and efficiently and thus make changes at an early stage. It was also important to do-document what I change so that I could make conscious decisions through the process. In addition to the fact that I aimed to present a result, the work has mostly been about the process leading up to the result. Learning from the different steps and developing myself as a designer, which I consider myself to have done.

Det här examensarbetet kretsar kring mina experiment med parkettläggningstekniker, och mina försök att bygga en möbel som ser ut som att den har tagits över av ett mönster eller en struktur. En övergång till någonting mer skulpturalt. Jag använder träbitar som blivit över från andra projekt för att tillverka dessa dekorationer. Min utgångspunkt är traditionella parkettläggningstekniker, men jag arbetar också med en slags mer tredimensionell parkettläggning, med tjockare, vinklade bitar, för att skapa djup och ett intryck av växande. / This thesis work revolves around my experiments with parquetry and my attempts to build a piece of furniture that appears to have been taken over by a pattern or structure. A transition into something more sculptural. I use pieces of wood left over from other projects to create these decorations. My basis is traditional parquetry techniques, but I also work with a type of more three dimensional parquetry, with thicker, angled pieces, to create depth and an impression of growing.

I mitt examensarbete jämför jag styrkan för sammanfogningar i trämöbler med fasta tappar och centrumtappar utifrån fem parametrar: tappens dimensioner, tappens inpassning, tappens komprimering, tappens antal och tappens limning. Den övergripande frågan har varit, ”är fasta tappar eller centrumtappar starkast?” Målet har varit att sålla i olika teorier rörande dessa två typer av sammanfogningar och skapa ett underlag i syfte att hjälpa möbelsnickare och formgivare att kunna ta medvetna beslut vad gäller sina val av dessa typer av sammanfogningar. Genom litteraturstudier och verkstads besök har jag samlat kunskap som ligger till grund för det hållfasthets test jag sedan gjort i materiallabbet på Linköpings universitet. Testet har utgått från ett scenario där en stols bakben ska fogas samman med en sarg. Testet visar, utifrån ett antal angivna avgränsningar, att fasta tappar utan undantag är starkare än centrumtappar.Det visar också att en dubbel fast tapp fördelar belastningen bättre än en enkel fast tapp och bidrar till en betydligt starkare fog. För c-tappar gäller generellt att ökat antal tappar ökar fogens seghet men inte nödvändigtvis maxbelastningen. Inpassning och komprimering har betydelse för hur seg en fog är. / I have in my thesis compared the strength of mortise and tenon joints and dowel joints in wooden furniture. I´ve made the comparison based on five parameters: the dimensions of the tenon or dowel, the fit of the tenon or dowel, the compression of the tenon or dowel, the number of tenons or dowels and the gluing of the tenon or dowel. The bigger question has been, “is the mortise and tenon joint or the dowel joint the strongest?” The goal has been to go through different theories regarding these two types of joinery and making a foundation to help cabinet makers and designers to make conscious decisions regarding their choices of these two types of joinery. Through studies of literature and visiting workshops I´ve gathered knowledge that lies as a foundation for a test of strength of different joinery made in the material testing facility of Linköping University. The test was based on a scenario of joining the back leg and side rim of a chair. The test shows, from the given definitions, that mortise and tenon joints are without exceptions stronger than dowel joints. It also shows that double tenons better will distribute the load and make for a stronger and tougher joint. Dowel joints will get tougher with an increased number of dowels but it will not necessarily make for a stronger joint. The fit and compression of the tenon or dowel will affect the joints strength.

Målet med det här examensarbetet är att utforska hur jag som möbelsnickare kan använda mig av dekorativa element. Dessutom vill jag söka svar på frågan om hur utvecklingen mot den minimalistiska estetik vi ser idag sett ut och vad den fått för konsekvenser. Undersökningen görs i form av en litteraturstudie där jag tar avstamp i ett källmaterial och diskuterar dekorativa element från flera perspektiv. Litteraturstudien innehåller bland annat en analys av dekorationer ur ett genusperspektiv, en undersökning av begreppet smak samt en reflektion kring hur ornamentik påverkar ett föremåls estetiska hållbarhet. Vidare använder jag mina hantverkskunskaper till att undersöka ämnet genom en fysisk gestaltning. I min gestaltning låter jag det avskalade i dealet representeras av ett bord från IKEA och genom att dekorera det med intarsia möts det minimalistiska med ett mer expressivt uttryckssätt. Min slutsats är att dekorativa element ger en större möjlighet för känslomässig anknytning till ett objekt och att vi hantverkare har chansen att tillfredsställa detta behov. Diskussionen om dekorationers vara eller icke vara är angelägen och bör fortsätta föras och nyanseras inomformgivnings- och hantverkssfären. / The aim of this thesis is to investigate how, in my role a a craftsman, I can use decorativeelements in my work. Furthermore, I seek to answer the question about how the development towards today’s minimalist aesthetics has evolved and what the consequences of this has been. This examination consists of a literature study where I use different sources to discuss decorative elements from a range of perspectives. The study includes an analysis of decoration from a gender perspective, an investigation on the term taste and a discussion on how ornamentation influences the aesthetic s ustainability of an object. Moreover, I use my craftsmanship skills to examine the subject through designing and constructing a physical object. In my design process, I merge the minimalistic ideal as represented by an IKEA table with a decorative element in the form of marquetry. My conclusion is that decorative elements have the possibility to enable emotional connection with an object and a s craftsmenhave the opportunity to satisfy this need. The discussion about the existence of ornamentationis important and should keep being held in the design and craft community.
