Human Vulnerability to Climatic Dry Periods in the Prehistoric U.S. Southwest

January 2010 (has links)
abstract: This study investigates the vulnerability of subsistence agriculturalists to food shortfalls associated with dry periods. I approach this effort by evaluating prominent and often implicit conceptual models of vulnerability to dry periods used by archaeologists and other scholars investigating past human adaptations in dry climates. The conceptual models I evaluate rely on an assumption of regional-scale resource marginality and emphasize the contribution of demographic conditions (settlement population levels and watershed population density) and environmental conditions (settlement proximity to perennial rivers and annual precipitation levels) to vulnerability to dry periods. I evaluate the models and the spatial scales they might apply by identifying the extent to which these conditions influenced the relationship between dry-period severity and residential abandonment in central Arizona from A.D. 1200 to 1450. I use this long-term relationship as an indicator of potential vulnerability to dry periods. I use tree-ring precipitation and streamflow reconstructions to identify dry periods. Critically examining the relationship between precipitation conditions and residential abandonment potentially sparked by the risk of food shortfalls due to demographic and environmental conditions is a necessary step toward advancing understanding of the influences of changing climate conditions on human behavior. Results of this study support conceptual models that emphasize the contribution of high watershed population density and watershed-scale population-resource imbalances to relatively high vulnerability to dry periods. Models that emphasize the contribution of: (1) settlement population levels, (2) settlement locations distant from perennial rivers, (3) settlement locations in areas of low average annual precipitation; and (4) settlement-scale population-resource imbalances to relatively high vulnerability to dry periods are, however, not supported. Results also suggest that people living in watersheds with the greatest access to and availability of water were the most vulnerable to dry periods, or at least most likely to move when confronted with dry conditions. Thus, commonly held assumptions of differences in vulnerability due to settlement population levels and inherently water poor conditions are not supported. The assumption of regional-scale resource marginality and widespread vulnerability to dry periods in this region of the U.S. Southwest is also not consistently supported throughout the study area. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Anthropology 2010

Enabling Development: A Housing Scheme in Rural Pakistan

Rahman, Tariq 27 October 2016 (has links)
This thesis explores the development of a housing scheme in rural Pakistan. In the so-called ‘backward’ district of Bhakkar, five entrepreneurs formed a partnership in 2004 to build the area’s first privately developed housing scheme. As housing schemes are associated with development in Pakistan, they saw themselves as providing services that the state was expected, but failed, to deliver. Departing from normative conceptions of the state, this case study demonstrates how state power functions in Pakistan. Though it is an entrepreneurial venture, the construction of the housing scheme is structured by a discourse of national development. Further, the project was made possible through the state’s integration of Bhakkar into global economic circuits. I argue that the Pakistani state’s power in this instance does not obtain from its felt presence in Bhakkar but rather from its assurance of access to various physical and digital networks through which it is reconfigured.

Contribution of Antonio Fraga, Carolina de Jesus Lopes and Maura Cançado literature to another understanding of marginality

Marcela Lopes Menequini 05 March 2013 (has links)
This work seeks, through a study of literature linking social and critical thinking, to explore the relationships between the processes of marginalization and some literary intellective about alternative notions of marginality and abnormality. His literary corpus includes three books of Brazilian writers, that, plus they have not succeeded in inserting in what could be understood as a national canon, stand out even in the theme of his works, which, in themselves, bring the problem of marginalization. Thus, Desabrigo, of Antonio Fraga, Quarto de despejo, of Carolina de Jesus, and Hospício é Deus, of Maura Lopes Cançado are addressed from the reflections developed especially by Michel Foucault and Georges Canguilhem about the strategies of production of abnormal, revealing how marginalization, rather than being a consequence of an inadequate pre-existing rules, can indeed be the source of production of these rules. Seeking value both convergences, as the possible distinctions in the works of these three writers, the work seeks to move away from a perspective that would seize his works as isolated and discredited productions, to find in them the power of affirmation of a literary discourse that both presented as complaint and defense, as as a work of literary expression and therefore of social expression.

Through Plínio Marcos' drama theater in an intercrossing with other documental sources, this paper analyzes the subject of São Paulo urban marginality in the period from 1958 to 1979. Trying to promote an interaction between the content and the production of those plays in convergence with the living of this author, it was seeker the perception and the analytic exam of the several representations produced by this play writer on this social segment in the delimited period, in a continuous traffic between the real and the fictional, making a diversity of significances to emerge about the individuals of that universe and the time in which enroll in the picture of historical transformations of that chronological cutting. To approach the several aspects of that marginal under world enunciated by the varied used sources, we came across a singular image built to respect those marginalized, observed under a new prism, revealing the hidden dimensions of that universe relegated to the margins and little understood in general by the society. In that task, we tried to notice and to discuss the group of cultural practices, moral values and ingrained several habits in those means, as well as your put sociability codes in operation in the interrelationship among same while emarginated, and in the contact with individuals and institutions located out of that circuit, economical and ecological circuit of the marginality. Over passing the totality of that study, is the framing of those excluded in a certain time, with peculiar characteristics that tend to turn pale in the metamorphosis process that those individuals suffer in consonance with the transformations of the period, in the decade of 1970, when it is possible to capture the ruptures of a time for another.

From an effort to understand urban violence, we contribute to the debate about the urban antagonisms, which showed an opposition between objective and subjective social groups and the subjects of major Brazilian metropolis - Sao Paulo - the light of global transformations that have the metropolitan area and as a condition of re inherent metropolis, accelerated by the globalization of business and governance. The dynamics of reproduction of the metropolis it is perverse, unequal, fragmented and segregated, condition and results of urban relationships for which the resources are limited and the fields of negotiation, so the violence as a political and emerge as one of the elements capable of building identities and lifestyles of both groups established, as social groups with a deficit of power. The main objective was to investigate the logic of violence and the spread between the subjects of outsiders and their respective metropolitan areas, such as that organized violence between the most powerful social groups in the Metropolitan Region, to help set up a city with process of militarization of their problems, the tissue fragments social and splinter the territories within the metropolis. We fielded observations in the historic center and in the eastern city of Sao Paulo and to establish informal dialogue with the residents of vulnerable areas, generally called the suburbs, then to consider the representations, auto-representations, reading and social space that they are subject you and your group, and social groups at high power, trying to understand how these subjects see each fraction of the city, ahead of fear, insecurity and the militarization that has characterized the metropolitan areas.

Fabri, Eliane Isabel. January 2017 (has links)
