A comparative study of the problem of abstraction versus experience between East and West (as exemplified in selected Eastern and Western sages)

Zeff, Leo Jacob 01 January 1958 (has links)
This thesis is a comparative study of the teachings of a number of Eastern sages and a representative of modern Western depth psychology in connection with the problem of abstraction versus experience (or, thinking about instead of experiencing}. This problem is considered by the writer as the central cause in the suffering of mankind everywhere. The introductory chapter will present the problem being investigated, why and how it is considered significant, and how it will be dealt with in this study. The second chapter will contain a presentation of the various sages to be considered here, how and why they were selected, and some biographical and historical data about each. In the succeeding chapters the discussion will include what each of these sages claims to be the nature of: A. The human soul. B. God and the. universe. C. The problems of mankind (how they developed, what man can do about them; how he can do it .) Following the Bibliography is an appendix which contains comparative statements from each of the sages about a variety of universal themes.

Munguia Matos, Ayrton César, Vargas Vega, Arón Andrés 10 February 2021 (has links)
This thesis has a non-experimental quantitative approach of correlational design whose general objective is to determine if the Scrum methodology is related to customer satisfaction of mobile applications of the main banking entities declared digital transformers in the retail banking section in Metropolitan Lima in 2019. The Scrum methodology and customer satisfaction are high-impact topics, which are constantly being developed in various industries around the world finding unexplored areas regarding the knowledge of the relationship of both variables. Consequently, they could improve work methodologies in the world of work, as well as the client or end user experience. The research was conducted on a population of 2,371,542 people, represented by a sample of 383 people; this information was collected through a survey composed of two sections, the first one focuses on the Scrum methodology variable, it was composed of 17 questions and was adapted from the article “The Impact of Scrum on Costumer Satisfaction An Empirical Study”; regarding the second section, it focused on the client satisfaction variable, composed of 27 questions and adapted, mainly, from SERVQUAL. “We Were Called Low-Grades” : Current Archival Approaches to the Digitization and Dissemination of Eugenics Collections

Gilbert Gladitz, Georgia January 2022 (has links)
This thesis examines the current methodological approaches to digital access and dissemination of eugenics archives. It looks in-depth at four institutions from around the world which provide some means of digital access to a specific eugenics collection that they control: the Wellcome Collection within the Wellcome Library in London, the Image Archive on the American Eugenics Movement founded in part by the Cold Springs Laboratory in New York, the Canadian Eugenics Archive, and the State Institute for Race Biology at the Uppsala University Library Special Collections in Sweden. The complexity of archival methodology and thought has evolved over the course of the past few decades, with more and more institutions recognizing the historical bias of their collections and many working towards combating these biases to bridge knowledge gaps and provide more detailed and nuanced understanding of their materials. With the development of the internet, and the pressure for heritage institutions to turn towards more digital methods of dissemination of their collections, there has been fierce debate as to good practices towards implementing these digital means of access and dissemination. Collections which contain historically problematic materials, such as eugenics collections, can make digitization and digital methodologies particularly difficult. This thesis serves as a groundwork for the development of good institutional methodologies in terms of digitization of eugenics-related materials by comparing the available methodologies employed by four institutions holding materials which were particularly significant during the period of legally applied eugenics on their respective populations.

An evaluation of test processes in an agile environment

Eshtiagh, Peyman January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to improve the reliability and quality of new requested functionality, and existing modules, at Fortum HR System Solutions. This was conducted through an evaluation of the test processes by implementing principles of Software Testing and Test Management. For the study to successfully improve the testing performed at HR System Solutions, existing test processes were analyzed. The analysis was conducted by evaluating the current test processes using theoretical test evaluation styles called maturity models. The methodology of choice was the Testing Maturity Model (TMM), which was adapted to the nature of HR System Solutions requirements, experience and needs. The evaluation used qualitative methods together with pedagogical principles to conduct interviews and workshops to consolidate the theoretical evaluation. Interviews and workshops were conducted within the team of HR System Solutions, where all members of them team contributed to the thesis at some point. An external interview also took place for comparative study. Results of the evaluation, interviews and workshop were compiled and analyzed accordingly. With the analyzed results in place, flaws in the testing processes were apparent. A generalization of the flaws led to the conclusion in the form of a suggestion. The conclusive suggestion was for Fortum HR System Solutions to establish a test committee/group role within the team. Considering the current economical and organizational situation this job role would be a divided job role appointed to current members of the HR System Solutions team. The research creates a walkthrough on a potential method on understanding inefficiencies within testing processes of a company and providing a cause-based solution.

“Day by day: coming of age is a process that takes time”: supporting culturally appropriate coming of age resources for urban Indigenous youth in care on Vancouver Island

Mellor, Andrea Faith Pauline 16 July 2021 (has links)
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s first call to action is to reduce the number of Indigenous children and youth in care, including keeping young people in culturally appropriate environments. While we work towards this goal, culturally appropriate resources are needed to support children and youth as evidence shows that when Indigenous youth have access to cultural teachings, they have improved physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health outcomes. Our project focused on the protective qualities of Indigenous coming of age teachings. Together with our community partner Surrounded by Cedar Child and Family Services, we worked to develop resources that inform and advocate for a culturally-centered coming of age for urban Indigenous youth living in foster care in Victoria, British Columbia on Lekwungen Territory. This dissertation begins with a literature review to provide the social and historical context surrounding urban Indigenous youth-in-care’s access to coming of age teachings. This is followed by a description of the Indigenous research paradigm that guided our work, what it meant for us to do this project in a good way, and the methods that we used to develop three visual storytelling knowledge sharing tools. Three manuscripts are presented, two published and one submitted, that reflect a strength-based vision of coming of age shared by knowledge holders who participated in our community events. The first manuscript retells the events of the knowledge holder’s dinner, where community members shared their perspectives on four questions related to community engagement and youth support. An analysis of the event’s transcripts revealed key themes including the responsibility of creating safe-spaces for youth, that coming of age is a community effort, and the importance of youth self-determining their journey. A graphic recording and short story are used to illustrate and narrate the relationship between key themes and related signifiers. This manuscript highlights the willingness of the community to collectively support youth in their journeys to adulthood. The second manuscript focuses on our two youth workshops that had the objective of understanding what rites of passage youth in SCCFS’s care engage with and how they learn what cultural teachings were most important to them. The findings suggest that when youth experience environments of belonging, and know they are ‘part of something bigger’, qualities like self-determination, self-awareness, and empowerment are strengthened. The third manuscript focuses on how we translated our project findings into different storytelling modalities using an Indigenist arts-based methodological approach. The project findings provided the inspiration and content for a fictional story called Becoming Wolf, which was adapted into a graphic novel, and a watercolour infographic. These knowledge sharing media present our project findings in accessible and meaningful ways that maintain the context and essences of our learnings. This research illustrates how Indigenous coming of age is an experience of interdependent teachings, events, and milestones, that contribute to the wellness of the body, mind, heart, and spirit of youth and the Indigenous community more broadly. Through our efforts, we hope to create a shared awareness about the cultural supports available to urban Indigenous youth that can contribute to lifelong wellness. / Graduate

Therapeutic Foster Parents' Perspectives of the Efficacy of Preservice Training

Grant, Mirae Jean 01 January 2015 (has links)
Preservice training programs offered in a city in the Pacific Northwest have not been assessed to determine whether they adequately prepare therapeutic foster parents (TFPs). This phenomenological study identified factors that influenced the impact of preservice training on parents' preparation to manage their foster children's behavior, foster parent attrition, and multiple moves of the foster children. Chamberlain, Rork, McNeil, and Christenson's work linking training programs with the success of foster children was used to frame this study. Data were generated from semistructured interviews of 12 certified local TFPs who had completed preservice training and had at least one child placed in their home for at least a weekend. NVivo 10 qualitative analysis software was used to manage the data, which were analyzed via an inductive process. Findings indicated that TFPs felt the training was effective and the information provided was useful in real life situations. Suggestions for improvement included adding additional examples of behavioral issues and personal stories from trainers and facilitating increased interaction among foster parents. TFPs reported that their intrinsic motivations for fostering had more impact on decisions to continue with foster children in their home than did the preservice training. The project generated from the study was a policy recommendation addressed to program stakeholders that could have a significant social impact in developing training to better address behavioral challenges, prevent multiple moves, and promote cultural sensitivity while reinforcing parents' motivation for fostering.
