Women in Transition: Experiences of Asian Women International Students on U.S. College Campuses

Jeyabalasingam, Siva 01 January 2011 (has links)
Often referred to as people in transition, international students usually arrive in the U.S. with a clear sense of their academic goals; however, they often have not considered what their lives will be like or how they may change in non-academic ways. In addition to the typical level of university-related stress, international students face additional problems and difficulties generated in part by the cultural differences between the U.S. and their own countries. This is particularly true for Asian students. Of several studies that have investigated the experiences of international students in the U.S., only a handful have examined Asian students' unique experiences of acculturation, and although the number of Asian women students in the U.S. is increasing, there are even fewer studies about them. This study served as a corrective to these tendencies by focusing specifically on the transformative experiences of Asian women international students (AWIS). Utilizing autoethnographic and ethnographic methodologies, the researcher conducted a qualitative study, exploring in depth the lived experiences of eleven Asian women in cultural transition. The findings bring to light rich and conflicting emotional, cognitive, and interpersonal experiences and strategies of AWIS, who attempt to balance the cultural and familial injunctions of their parents (e.g., Bring Honor, Stay Asian, and Obey Us or Else) with the freedom and opportunities of American culture and campus life. The findings of this research will be relevant to various stakeholders. University administrators and staff, particularly professionals in student affairs and, more specifically, those working with international students and/or in student counseling centers, will benefit from a nuanced understanding of the complexities of these students' lives. Both researchers and clinicians will gain an appreciation for how a systemic focus can be maintained while interviewing individuals. Clinicians will also be better equipped to handle the cultural complexities encountered by these women and to provide culturally sensitive counseling.

Exploring the Lived Experiences of Marriage and Family Therapy Students Who Study Bowen Family Systems Theory, and Relating Those Experiences to Concepts of Differentiation of Self and Emotional Intelligence: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis

Spencer, Tracey-Ann Dushane 01 January 2015 (has links)
Bowen Family Systems Theory’s (BFST) concept of differentiation of self has the ability to contribute to the self-development of the therapist, and is considered the technique of this theory (Kerr & Bowen, 1988). Emotional intelligence is an essential skill for Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs), as it provides the ability to accurately perceive, express, and evaluate emotions in one’s self and others to facilitate thought, and the regulation of emotions in order to enhance emotional and intellectual growth (Salovey & Mayer, 1997). This study explored the lived experiences of Marriage and Family Therapy students who studied BFST and related those experiences to concepts of differentiation of self and emotional intelligence. This qualitative study utilized Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to gather, process, and analyze the essence of students’ experiences. This process included semi-structured open-ended interviewing of six doctoral students, transcribing, and analyzing the data in accordance with IPA. This study led to the outcome of the coined term differentiated intelligent emotion. The findings of the study produced nine themes: (1) BFST impact on clinical work, (2) BFST impact on personal development, (3) Differentiation of self, (4) Emotional intelligence, (5) Anxiety, (6) Nuclear family emotional process, (7) Multigenerational transmission process, (8) Triangulation, and (9) Individuality and Togetherness. The findings suggest the study of BFST resulted in awareness and an increase in the differentiation of self supported by an increase in emotional intelligence. This led to improvements in personal development, professional development in therapeutic relationships, anxiety, nuclear family functioning, multigenerational transmission process, detriangulation, and sense of individuality. This study contributes to the existing training and development literature concerning MFT’s in terms of their differentiation of self and emotional intelligence. The research presents implications for future research, clinical practice and training.

Evaluating e-Training for public library staff: A quasi-experimental investigation.

Dalston, Teresa 08 1900 (has links)
A comparative evaluation framework of instructional interventions for implementation of online training for public library staff would enable a better understanding of how to improve the effectiveness, efficiency and efficacy of training in certain training environments. This dissertation describes a quasi-experimental study of a two-week, asynchronous online training course that was provided at four levels of instructional intervention to public library staff in the United States. The course content addressed the complex issues of difficult patron policy development and situational coping techniques. The objective of the study was to develop and demonstrate a theoretically grounded, evidence-based impact evaluation framework. The framework was used to assess the relative impact of an online course for public librarians at four levels of instructional intervention. The researcher investigated the relationships between the type of e-Training instructional interventions and the short- and long-term impacts on participants' knowledge, self-efficacy, and workplace performance. The study used a longitudinal, quasi-experimental design that included a pretest, posttest and three-month delayed posttest with follow-up survey. 194 participants completed all three phases of the study. The evaluation tools measured course content related knowledge and self-efficacy at all three phases (pretest, posttest, and delayed posttest) and assessed workplace application of training at 3-month follow-up. The results of this study contributed to evaluation theory and learning theory literature applied to the online learning environment and informed public library staff online training practices and evaluation methodologies.

The Enchanter's Spell: J.R.R. Tolkien's Mythopoetic Response to Modernism

Gorelick, Adam D. 12 November 2013 (has links)
J.R.R. Tolkien was not only an author of fantasy but also a philologist who theorized about myth. Theorists have employed various methods of analyzing myth, and this thesis integrates several analyses, including Tolkien’s. I address the roles of doctrine, ritual, cross-cultural patterns, mythic expressions in literature, the literary effect of myth, evolution of language and consciousness, and individual invention over inheritance and diffusion. Beyond Tolkien’s English and Catholic background, I argue for eclectic influence on Tolkien, including resonance with Buddhism. Tolkien views mythopoeia, literary mythmaking, in terms of sub-creation, human invention in the image of God as creator. Key mythopoetic tools include eucatastrophe, the happy ending’s sudden turn to poignant joy, and enchantment, the realization of imagined wonder, which is epitomized by the character of Tom Bombadil and contrasted with modernist techno-magic seeking to alter and dominate the world. I conclude by interpreting Tolkien’s mythmaking as a form of mysticism.

Souza, Iranilde dos Santos Rocha 18 October 2016 (has links)
This research aimed to understand how the methodologies and strategies of Portuguese language teaching, through the textual genres, are developed for the deaf in inclusive classrooms in the 1st grade of High School, in a state school in Aracaju-Sergipe. It is justified by the teachers' complaint about the challenge to find a methodology of Portuguese language teaching for the deaf, due to their difficulty with reading, interpretation and writing, factors that require courses that train teachers capable of dealing with the school reality According to the diversity of students. It is based on studies by Alvez et al (2010) on social inclusion; In the concepts of methodologies and strategies developed by Brown (1994); In the concept of textual genres of Marcuschi (2010) and Porto (2009); And Salles (2004) on the teaching of Portuguese Language for the deaf. In the methodology of the research, this is a case study developed through an interview with two teachers of Portuguese Language and an interpreter of Libras. In this way, the research sought to reflect on a teaching methodology that is in line with the needs of deaf students, and the following results were found: Teachers use methodologies and strategies through textual genres in Portuguese language teaching, which are only intended for listeners. However, the reflection presented in the teachers' speech shows the concern with a shared methodology, that is, for both the deaf and the hearing, as well as showing that both teachers and interpreters need continued qualification and education in the area of deaf education, As well as to acquire the habit of reflection on how to improve teaching-learning according to the students' performance.

Alexandre Freire da Silva 14 September 2007 (has links)
Agile methodologies, specially eXtreme Programming (XP), appear as a counterpoint to traditional software development methods. We live in a moment were it is considered acceptable to find bugs in computer programs, even those for which we pay a lot of money. It is essential to improve the way we teach techniques with which teams can collaborate on the development of quality software so that this area of knowledge reaches the maturity we wish. Teaching XP is a relatively complex task because it implies that people must go through a cultural change to accept its values, principles, and practices. Different organizations need to adapt the methodology so that it will work well in their local context. Finding ways to facilitate teaching and adopting agile practices is fundamental to improve the quality of software being developed in the country. This work researches the process of teaching XP in academic, governmental and industrial con- texts. Three case studies were conducted and analyzed so that we could suggest patterns that can support educators teaching the methodology in any context.

New radical additions of alkylsulfonyl cyanides onto unactivated olefins : enantioselective approaches towards the total synthesis of leucophyllidine / Nouvelles additions radicalaires de cyanures d’alkylsulfonyle sur des oléfines non-activées : approches énantiosélectives à la synthèse totale de la leucophyllidine

Pirenne, Vincent 20 December 2018 (has links)
During our efforts directed toward the total synthesis of leucophyllidine, a bis-indole alkaloid, the tin-free radical carbo-cyanation and sulfonyl-cyanation of olefins were developed. The sulfonyl cyanides, acting as radical traps, were synthesized through a new oxidation of the corresponding thiocyanate. These reagents were found to fragment under thermal initiation (carbo-cyanation) or using the photoredox catalysis (sulfonyl-cyanation). A thorough mechanistic study was accomplished for the sulfonyl-cyanation. These methodologies install a nitrile onto an olefin backbone, furnishing advanced intermediates for the total synthesis of alkaloids. For the asymmetric synthesis of eucophylline, the south fragment of leucophyllidine, the sulfonyl-cyanation of optically pure cyclobutenes showed excellent diastereoselectivities. Different ring-opening reactions of the corresponding cyclobutane were then examined.

Griol Barres, David 07 May 2008 (has links)
Griol Barres, D. A comparative study of the problem of abstraction versus experience between East and West (as exemplified in selected Eastern and Western sages)

Zeff, Leo Jacob 01 January 1958 (has links)
This thesis is a comparative study of the teachings of a number of Eastern sages and a representative of modern Western depth psychology in connection with the problem of abstraction versus experience (or, thinking about instead of experiencing}. This problem is considered by the writer as the central cause in the suffering of mankind everywhere. The introductory chapter will present the problem being investigated, why and how it is considered significant, and how it will be dealt with in this study. The second chapter will contain a presentation of the various sages to be considered here, how and why they were selected, and some biographical and historical data about each. In the succeeding chapters the discussion will include what each of these sages claims to be the nature of: A. The human soul. B. God and the. universe. C. The problems of mankind (how they developed, what man can do about them; how he can do it .) Following the Bibliography is an appendix which contains comparative statements from each of the sages about a variety of universal themes.
