Psychological Effects of Training in Martial Arts After Interpersonal Trauma

Individuals who experience a traumatic event may have an adverse emotional reaction that negatively impacts their quality of life. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the influence of training in the martial arts as an intervention in the treatment of interpersonal trauma. The biopsychosocial model provided the framework for the study. The research questions addressed the effects of training in the martial arts and the biological, psychological, and social functioning of individuals who had sustained a form of interpersonal trauma. Data were collected from semistructured interviews with 9 participants. Data were analyzed using Moustakas's modified van Kamm method. Findings indicated that martial arts training was transformative and positive for participants. Benefits included mentorship, a sense of achievement, increased confidence, better parenting, and recovery from substance abuse. Findings may be used to promote martial arts training as a treatment intervention for people who have experienced interpersonal trauma.

The aim of the study was to examine if the sport Mixed Martial Arts could serve as a enabling element for young people in society and in such a case, in wich way. The following questions were asked in the study:How does coaches and young practioners of MMA experience that the sport affects the living conditions of individuals?Could MMA act as a protective factor in preventing social problems?What is the practioners point of view on the criticism of MMA and the risks of practioning MMA?The study was conducted through the qualitative research approach. Empirical data was collected through semi-structured interviews with practioners of an MMA club situated in an area with low socioeconomic status. The empirical material was analyzed based on a number of theoretical concepts, in wich the perspective of risk- and protective factors had an significant part. The result show that MMA could affect the living conditions of individuals in many ways, one of them is the coach as a supportive adult to young people. There are a number of social aspects associated to participation in MMA, as to acquire self-esteem and a social context. The young practioners does not agree on the criticism toward MMA of being brutal and adverse, instead they claim that MMA is characterized by humility and respect to your opponent. They admit that there are injuries following the practice of the sport, as in any sports, thus it is the social advantages that keeps them continuing to practice MMA.

By using the notion of interdiscursivity, as discussed by Norman Fairclough, my goal isto analyze how the roles of the characters relate to existing discourses in today’s society. I amprimarily interested in discourses revolving around MMA-fighters, masculinities and familyrelations.The movie to be analysed in this study is suited for interpreting new sorts of masculinitiesthrough the sport of MMA, which itself is fairly new and therefore might represent a new type ofmasculinity in the making. To be able to analyse this in the best possible way, I will be looking atmasculinities using a perspective developed by the Australian sociologist Raewyn Connell. Byrelating to four different dimensions of masculinity, this theory enables me to interpret whichtypes of masculinities, or combinations thereof, are presented in the film.

Utredning av risker och begränsningar vid användning av gasmetallbågsvetsning vid montage / Investigation of risks and limitations when using gas metal arc welding for assembly

Det här examensarbetet har utrett riskerna för att få bindfel vid gasmetalbågsvetsning av halv V-fog på uppdrag för DEKRA Industrial AB som utför teknisk kontroll, certifiering, provning och besiktning. Arbetet utreder ett tidigare fall där indikationer från ultraljudsprovning visade att bindfel och ofullständig inträngning fanns i den större delen av svetsförbanden i en konstruktion. De svetsförbanden var svetsade med gasmetalbågsvetsning och har en halv V-fogs utformning. En litteraturstudie gjordes om ljusbågsteorin och orsaken till bindfel. Sedan svetsades fyra prover upp, två med snäv fogvinkel och två med bred fogvinkel, där det tidigare fallet försöktes efterliknas. Proverna provades med ultraljudsprovning och makroskopisk provning för att finna bindfel och andra defekter. Litteraturstudien visar att bindfel uppkommer så fort ljusbågen inte hinner smälta upp det underliggande materialet och smältan läggs på osmält material. En av orsakerna till det är fel pistolvinkel vilket ger att ena fogen inte smälts och bindfel erhålls. Dessutom så spelar elektrodutsticket stor roll där ett för långt elektrodustick antingen ger en för kall process eller ett för stort smältbad beroende på om parametrarna ändras av svetsaren. Vid svetsning i halv V-fog så är åtkomligheten dålig så det är stor risk att få både fel pistol vinkel och ett felaktigt elektrodutstick. Provsvetsningens resultat var att de snäva halva V-fogarna var svår svetsade och fick ofullständig inträngning och innehöll bindfel och slagginneslutningar. Dessutom var topsträngarna svårsvetsade med WPS:ens parameterar. Slutsatsen efter svetsningen och provningen är att risken för bindfel är hög vid snäva fogar samt att de som svetsat i det tidigare fallet inte kan ha följt sina WPS:er för att uppnå godkända toppsträngar. / This thesis work has evaluated the risks of getting lack of fusion during gas metal arc welding of single-bevel prepared T-joints. The work has been done at DEKRA Industrial AB that is specialized in certification, testing and inspection. The reason for this work is an earlier case where ultrasound testing indicated lack of fusion and lack of penetration was located in the major part of the weld joints in a construction. Those weld joints had been gas metal arc welded and had a single-bevel preparation. A literature study was done on the subject of weld arc theory and the cause of lack of fusion. Then four samples were welded trying to imitate the earlier case, two with a wide joint preparation and two with a narrow preparation. The samples were subjected to ultrasound testing and macroscopic analysis to evaluate the existence of lack of fusion and other defects. The literature study shows that lack of fusion appear as soon the weld arc miss the base material and the molten weld consumable solidify on unmelted material. One of the causes is a wrong pistol angle which will make the weld arc miss one of the joint walls. Also, another important parameter is the electrode stick-out. A too long stick-out generates a too cold process or a too large puddle of melted metal depending if the welding parameters are adjusted to compensate the stick-out. When welding with a single-bevel joint, there is a heightened risk of getting the described problems because of the bad accessibility. The results from the welding were that the narrow prepared joints were hard to weld with and get proper quality, with lack of penetration and lack of fusion. The conclusion from the welding and testing is that the risk of getting lack of fusion is high while welding narrow single-bevel prepared Tjoints.

NOVEL SILICONE-BASED MATERIALS TO LIMIT BACTERIAL ADHESION AND SUBSEQUENT PROLIFERATION

<p>Bacterial biofilms are problematic in a variety of industries hence strategies for their mitigation have received significant attention. The approach described herein attempts to control bacterial adhesion using silicone-based polymers- (widely used due to their interesting properties)- via manipulation of their surface chemistry to eventually create anti-fouling surfaces. This involved study of the systematic variation of surface wettability and its effect on <em>Escherichia coli</em> (<em>E. coli</em>) adhesion to novel polymers of acrylate-modified silicone surfactant (ACR) with either hydroxyethyl methacrylate (a hydrophilic monomer), or methyl and butyl methacrylate (hydrophobic monomers). It was hypothesized that the systematic variation of ACR would produce surfaces with differing wettability, without changing other surface properties that influence cellular adhesion. Average light transmittance across the range of visible light wavelengths (400-740nm), surface roughness and Shore 00 hardness data were consistent across the ACR-HEMA copolymer series (80-90%, ~2.5 – 5 nm, and 75-95 Shore durometer points, respectively). The same consistency was observed for surface wettability (contact angles = 78-92°) despite varying HEMA content and consequently <em>Escherichia coli</em> (<em>E.coli</em>) adhesion, likely due to system saturation with silicon (as confirmed by EDX). However, wettability of the ACR-MMA-BMA polymers did vary; ≤ 20 wt% and ≥ 80 wt% ACR polymers had contact angles between 67°- 77°, while 20 < x < 80 wt% ACR polymers had increased surface wettability (contact angles 27.6°- 42.9°). <em>E. coli </em>adhesion across the set increased with increasing ACR content, a trend mirrored by the water uptake of the materials but not the contact angle data. These results indicate that <em>E. coli </em>adhesion occurs independently of wettability for these materials and although the effect of the latter on adhesion cannot be deduced, the possible correlation between bacterial adhesion and water uptake suggests that the best antifouling surfaces should not be of materials capable of imbibing significant amounts of water.</p> / Master of Applied Science (MASc)

O problema de corrosão é frequente para ligas ferrosas, notadamente o aço carbono. Para evitar os danos causados pela corrosão, uma série de processos é utilizada como o uso de ligas mais resistentes, filmes de pré-tratamento e a aplicação posterior de tintas ou vernizes, aplicação de banhos eletrolíticos para eletrodeposição de metais e outros. Os últimos desenvolvimentos tecnológicos relacionados à nanotecnologia trazem alternativas que consiste na aplicação de uma camada muito fina baseada em silanos como pré-tratamento de aço carbono para posterior pintura a fim de aumentar a aderência desta ao substrato pintado. Este pré-tratamento surge como alternativa ao uso de materiais nocivos ao meio ambiente e à saúde, como são o processo de fosfatização e os compostos de cromo hexavalente aplicados como eventuais passivantes após a fosfatização. Questões ambientais, de segurança e de custos têm sido consideradas, atualmente, no que diz respeito à utilização desses processos. Por esta razão, aumentaram as pesquisas de outros métodos de proteção contra a corrosão para aço carbono. O uso de silanos tem demostrado ser uma alternativa promissora como pré-tratamento por serem promotores de aderência e conferirem melhor resistência contra a corrosão em diferentes aplicações. A aplicação de pré-tratamentos com filmes híbridos, isto é, com características de filmes orgânicos como flexibilidade e características de filmes inorgânicos ou cerâmicos como elevada dureza e resistência a altas temperaturas, tem sido estudada com relativo sucesso. O presente trabalho apresenta o uso de revestimentos híbridos tetraetilortosilicato/metacriloxipropiltrimetoxisilano/metacrilato de metila, TEOS/MPTS/MMA, como pré-tratamento para aço-carbono com a finalidade de retardar ou diminuir o processo da corrosão e o emprego de quinonas como agente anti-gelificante da solução precursora do híbrido, aumentando sua vida de prateleira. A avaliação da resistência à corrosão dos filmes obtidos foi feita por técnicas eletroquímicas como espectroscopia de impedância eletroquímica (EIE), medida da resistência de polarização linear (Rp) e levantamento de curvas de polarização. Também foi realizado o estudo com quinonas para retardar o envelhecimento das soluções de híbrido e aumentar o tempo de vida em prateleira. Alguns fatores estudados foram: tempo de polimerização, uso de quinonas como agente anti-gelificante (nesse estudo foi feito um projeto fatorial de experimentos) e tempo de vida de prateleira da solução de híbrido. As variáveis resposta, do projeto de experimentos, para avaliação do filme de híbrido obtido foram: medidas de EIE, de Rp, levantamento de curvas de polarização, espessura de camada e medida de viscosidade das soluções com o tempo de envelhecimento. Os resultados obtidos foram: o melhor tempo de polimerização foi de 30 minutos e foi para esse tempo de polimerização que se fez o estudo de uso das diferentes quinonas (hidroquinona e p-benzoquinona), tendo sido a p-benzoquinona o melhor anti-gelificante. Verificou-se que a espessura de camada do filme híbrido aumenta com o tempo de vida de prateleira da solução precursora do híbrido e com o tempo de permanência na solução do híbrido, o que leva o filme a funcionar como uma barreira mais eficiente contra a corrosão. A viscosidade foi determinada para cada uma das soluções de híbrido, tanto para aquelas que não foram usadas para a deposição de filmes e para aquelas que foram usadas para a deposição de filmes, com e sem quinonas. Observou-se que a viscosidade da solução de híbrido sem ser usada para deposição de filmes se manteve praticamente constante, mas a viscosidade da solução de híbrido que serviu para as deposições do filme híbrido no substrato aumentou com o tempo de prateleira, devido provavelmente à presença de íons metálicos do substrato liberados na solução de híbrido que podem catalisar as reações de polimerização dos silanos e do monômero MMA gerando moléculas de maior peso molecular. / The corrosion problem is common for ferrous alloys, especially carbon steel. The use of polysilane films has been demonstrated to be a promising alternative as pre-treatment mainly because they have been employed as adhesion promoters what confers better corrosion resistance in different applications. This paper presents the use of hybrid coatings tetraethilorthosilicate /methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane/methylmethacrylate, TEOS/MPTS/MMA, as pre-treatment for carbon steel in order to delay or reduce the corrosion process and the use of quinones as anti-gelling agents of the hybrid precursor solution increasing its shelf life. The evaluation of the corrosion resistance of the films was made by electrochemical techniques such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), measurement of linear polarization resistance (Rp) and polarization curves. The use of quinones to slow the aging of hybrid solutions and increase their shelf-life time was also studied. A factorial design of experiments was performed for these purposes. The variables studied were: polymerization time, residence time of the substrate in the hybrid solution, use of quinones as anti-gelling agent and shelf life of the hybrid solution. The response variables for the design of experiments for evaluation of the hybrid films obtained were: EIS and Rp measurements, polarization curves, layer thickness and kinematic viscosity measurement of the solutions with aging time. The results obtained for best polymerization time was 30 minutes and for this polymerization time the study of use of different quinones (hydroquinone and p-benzoquinone) was made and p-benzoquinone was found to be the best anti-gelling agent. It was found that the thickness of the film layer increases with longer shelf life of the hybrid solution, which leads to more effective barrier films against corrosion. The viscosity was measured for each hybrid solution: for those that were not used for the deposition of films and for those that were used for the deposition of films, with or without quinones. It has been noted that the viscosity of the hybrid solution not used for the deposition of films was kept nearly constant but the viscosity increased with the shelf life for the hybrid solution that served for the hybrid film deposition on the metallic substrate, due to the influence of the metallic ions from the substrate released in the hybrid solution that can catalyze polimerization reactions of silanes and MMA monomer generating molecules of high molecular weight.

Using other minds : transparency as a fundamental design consideration for artificial intelligent systems

The human cognitive biases that result in anthropomorphism, the moral confusion surrounding the status of robots, and wider societal concerns related to the deployment of artificial intelligence at scale all motivate the study of robot transparency --- the design of robots such that they may be fully understood by humans. Based on the hypothesis that robot transparency leads to better (in the sense of more accurate) mental models of robots, I investigate how humans perceive and understand a robot when they encounter it, both in online video and direct physical encounter. I also use Amazon Mechanical Turk as a platform to facilitate online experiments with larger population samples. To improve transparency I use a visual real-time transparency tool providing a graphical representation of the internal processing and state of a robot. I also describe and deploy a vocalisation algorithm for transparency. Finally, I modify the form of the robot with a simple bee-like cover, to investigate the effect of appearance on transparency. I find that the addition of a visual or vocalised representation of the internal processing and state of a robot significantly improves the ability of a naive observer to form an accurate model of a robot's capabilities, intentions and purpose. This is a significant result across a diverse, international population sample and provides a robust result about humans in general, rather than one geographic, ethnic or socio-economic group in particular. However, all the experiments were unable to achieve a Mental Model Accuracy (MMA) of more than 59%, indicating that despite improved transparency of the internal state and processing, naive observers' models remain inaccurate, and there is scope for further work. A vocalising, or 'talking', robot greatly increases the confidence of naive observers to report that they understand a robot's behaviour when observed on video. Perhaps we might be more easily deceived by talking robots than silent ones. A zoomorphic robot is perceived as more intelligent and more likeable than a very similar mechanomorphic robot, even when the robots exhibit almost identical behaviour. A zoomorphic form may attract closer visual attention, and whilst this results in an improved MMA, it also diverts attention away from transparency measures, reducing their efficacy to further increase MMA. The trivial embellishment of a robot to alter its form has significant effects on our understanding and attitude towards it. Based on the concerns that motivate this work, together with the results of the robot transparency experiments, I argue that we have a moral responsibility to make robots transparent, so as to reveal their true machine nature. I recommend the inclusion of transparency as a fundamental design consideration for intelligent systems, particularly for autonomous robots. This research also includes the design and development of the 'Instinct' reactive planner, developed as a controller for a mobile robot of my own design. Instinct provides facilities to generate a real-time 'transparency feed'--- a real-time trace of internal processing and state. Instinct also controls agents within a simulation environment, the 'Instinct Robot World'. Finally, I show how two instances of Instinct can be used to achieve a second order control architecture.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Sergio Ricardo Siani.pdf: 7044998 bytes, checksum: e120d7062b2b4b12844db4afacf01331 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-09-14 / The fight sport known as MMA – Mixed Martial Arts, which in Portuguese corresponds to Artes Marciais Mistas, has lived in the last decade a very successful trajectory of increase and sustained, since the beginning, a singular relationship with Brazil – country that originated in the 20th century a kind of fight known as “Vale Tudo”, “Anything goes”, in English – being such modality the start of what is worldwide conceived as MMA. In the field of marketing management, the interest of sports marketing on such modality of sport is focused not only in the aspects provided by events related to that, but mainly in the increase potential of its globalized market. Defining a marketing strategy for such modality is still a challenge, since not all brands are willing to sponsor a fight event. The present study, which aims to investigate with attributes of MMA sport can establish a synergy with potential brands of interest of event organizers, with the intent to contribute to the theory of sports marketing and also contribute to the MMA event’s organizers may have sponsorship for their events, is not an easy task, because apart from being a good product to offer (event, athlete, location and so on) the promotor company “must define its own action strategy”. In both qualitative and quantitative nature, this research was carried out in three different phases: first, it was searched among MMA event’s organizers, by semi-structured interviews, to understand which brands or sponsors would be present in the dreamed events. The second phase, with was quantitative, applied a survey questionnaire, along with the audience of three MMA events and the motives behind the intention to watch such events. The results obtained in the first phase of the study, that is, the identification of the favorite brands of the event’s organizers were: Nike, Coke, Reebok, Banco do Brasil and Honda; the data obtained in the second phase consisted of getting the MMA attributes which were: adrenaline, emotion, joy, pleasure and aggressiveness, propelled the third and last phase of this study, in which, again, by the application of survey questionnaires, there were associations between brands and attributes. After carrying out four statistical tests, this researchwork reaches the conclusion that the atribute most linked to MMA was adrenaline and as for brand Nike was chosen. The aggressiveness was pointed out as a kind of attribute in which the audience related to this kind of sport, what generated the hypothesis of considering such modality as an aggressive one both in a view that only people who had never had any connection with MMA at all / O esporte de lutas MMA - Mixed Martial Arts, em português, Artes Marciais Mistas tem vivenciado na última década uma bem sucedida trajetória de crescimento e mantém desde a sua origem uma relação singular com o Brasil - país que deu origem, no século XX, a um tipo de luta conhecida como “Vale Tudo” – sendo esta modalidade a precursora do que hoje é mundialmente conhecido como MMA. No campo da gestão de marketing, o interesse do marketing esportivo sobre este esporte está focalizado não apenas nos aspectos decorrentes dos eventos que ele propicia, mas principalmente, no potencial de crescimento do seu mercado globalizado. Definir uma estratégia de marketing para essa modalidade ainda éum desafio, pois nem todas as marcas querem patrocinar um evento de lutas. O presente estudo tem o objetivo de investigar quais são os atributos do esporte MMA capazes de estabelecer sinergia com potenciais marcas de interesse dos organizadores de eventos. Com a intenção de contribuir para a teoria do marketing esportivo, mas também de auxiliar os organizadores de eventos de MMA a obter patrocínio para seus eventos; tarefa fácil, pois, além de um bom produto a oferecer (evento, atleta, local, etc), a empresa promotora “deve definir para si uma estratégia de ação”. De natureza qualitativa e quantitativa (quali-quanti), a pesquisa foi realizada em três fases distintas: na primeira buscou-se, junto a organziadores de eventos de MMA, por meio de entrevistas semi-estruturadas, entender quais marcas e/ou patrocinadores estariam presentes, no evento dos seus sonhos. Na segunda fase, quantitativa, usando questionario survey, buscou-se compreender junto à platéia de três eventos de MMA, a motivação para assistir presencialmente tais eventos. Ao apurar os dados da primeira fase do estudo, conclui-se que as marcas favoritas dos organizadores de eventos foram: Nike, Coca Cola, Reebok, Banco do Brasil e Honda. Os dados da segunda fase que apuraram os atributos do MMA, destacaram-se: adrenalina, emoção, alegria, prazer e agressividade. Após as apurações, deu-se inicio à terceira e última fase do estudo, onde, novamente com base em questionários survey, buscou-se associações entre marcas e atributos. Após realizar quatro testes estatísticos, conclui-se que o atributo mais associado com o MMA foi a adrenalina e a marca foi a Nike. A agressividade foi apontada como o atributo que a platéia menos associou a este esporte, o que gerou a hipótese de que considerar este esporte agressivo configure-se com uma visão que apenas de pessoas que nunca tiveram ligaçao com o MMA tem sobre ele
