Multiple Calibrations in Integrative Data Analysis: A Simulation Study and Application to Multidimensional Family Therapy

A recent advancement in statistical methodology, Integrative Data Analyses (IDA Curran & Hussong, 2009) has led researchers to employ a calibration technique as to not violate an independence assumption. This technique uses a randomly selected, simplified correlational structured subset, or calibration, of a whole data set in a preliminary stage of analysis. However, a single calibration estimator suffers from instability, low precision and loss of power. To overcome this limitation, a multiple calibration (MC; Greenbaum et al., 2013; Wang et al., 2013) approach has been developed to produce better estimators, while still removing a level of dependency in the data as to not violate independence assumption. The MC method is conceptually similar to multiple imputation (MI; Rubin, 1987; Schafer, 1997), so MI estimators were borrowed for comparison. A simulation study was conducted to compare the MC and MI estimators, as well as to evaluate the performance of the operating characteristics of the methods in a cross classified data characteristic design. The estimators were tested in the context of assessing change over time in a longitudinal data set. Multiple calibrations consisting of a single measurement occasion per subject were drawn from a repeated measures data set, analyzed separately, and then combined by the rules set forth by each method to produce the final results. The data characteristics investigated were effect size, sample size, and the number of repeated measures per subject. Additionally, a real data application of an MC approach in an IDA framework was conducted on data from three completed, randomized controlled trials studying the treatment effects of Multidimensional Family Therapy (MDFT; Liddle et al., 2002) on substance use trajectories for adolescents at a one year follow-up. The simulation study provided empirical evidence of how the MC method preforms, as well as how it compares to the MI method in a total of 27 hypothetical scenarios. There were strong asymptotic tendencies observed for the bias, standard error, mean square error and relative efficiency of an MC estimator to approach the whole set estimators as the number of calibrations approached 100. The MI combination rules proved not appropriate to borrow for the MC case because the standard error formulas were too conservative and performance with respect to power was not robust. As a general suggestion, 5 calibrations are sufficient to produce an estimator with about half the bias of a single calibration estimator and at least some indication of significance, while 20 calibrations are ideal. After 20 calibrations, the contribution of an additional calibration to the combined estimator greatly diminished. The MDFT application demonstrated a successful implementation of 5 calibration approach in an IDA on real data, as well as the risk of missing treatment effects when analysis is limited to a single calibration's results. Additionally, results from the application provided evidence that MDFT interventions reduced the trajectories of substance use involvement at a 1-year follow-up to a greater extent than any of the active control treatment groups, overall and across all gender and ethnicity subgroups. This paper will aid researchers interested in employing a MC approach in an IDA framework or whenever a level of dependency in a data set needs to be removed for an independence assumption to hold.

Symbolic uses of export information : implications for export performance

As export competition becomes more intense and export success vital for survival (Katsikeas, 1994), so the effective processing and use of information regarding the international environment becomes a critical prerequisite for gaining competitive advantage (Leonidou and Theodosiou, 2004). Symbolic use of information is one type of information use, which although relatively underexplored to date, may be the most prevalent form of information use within organisations – especially in an export setting (Beyer and Trice, 1982). Symbolic use occurs when information is used for purposes other than the ones which led to its collection (Menon and Varadarajan, 1992). Symbolic use of information has been conceptualised as a multi-dimensional construct encompassing various dimensions (Vyas and Souchon, 2003). Examples include “exporters that engage in distorting market research findings, taking conclusions out of context, disclosing only the findings that confirm an executive‟s predetermined position or consciously ignoring information” (Toften and Olsen, 2004, p. 106). Symbolic use can also legitimate decisions reached on the basis of intuition or managerial assumptions (Vyas and Souchon, 2003). Although conceptual propositions of the potential relationship between each of the symbolic use dimensions and performance exist (Vyas and Souchon 2003), no empirical research has yet been undertaken. As a result, little is known about how and why symbolic use of export information may affect export performance, and under what circumstances. Furthermore, reliable and valid measures for each one of the symbolic use dimensions are absent in the literature. The purpose of this thesis is to fill in these research gaps. In so doing, a combination of both qualitative and quantitative methods is employed. The exploratory phase takes the form of in depth interviews with export decision makers in the UK. The data collected in this exploratory phase are analysed through the use of within-case and cross-case displays as per Miles and Huberman (1994) and are used not just for hypothesis development, but also to identify potential outcomes of using information symbolically in specific ways and to create pools of items for the development of measures of symbolic use. Die vorliegende Forschungsarbeit untersuchte die Expeditionskonzerte des Philharmonischen Orchesters Erfurt - eine Konzertreihe mit Moderation für Jung und Alt. Ziel war es, die musikvermittelnden Gestaltungselemente sowie die konzertdramaturgischen, strukturellen und organisatorischen Grundlagen der Konzertreihe zu erforschen und Schlussfolgerungen für den Erfolg der Konzertreihe abzuleiten. Abschließend werden Möglichkeiten der Weiterentwicklung der Konzertreihe thematisiert. Basis der Forschungsarbeit sind drei explorative Interviews, die teilnehmende Feldbeobachtung sowie die quantitative Analyse. Die Ergebnisse bestätigen die These: Durch die Nutzung vielfältiger musikvermittelnder Gestaltungselemente, konzertdramaturgischer Merkmale und Marketing-Instrumente ist das Expeditionskonzert ein Konzertformat, das neue Impulse aussendet und damit ein heterogenes Publikum fasziniert, dass sich sowohl aus angestammten Konzertbesuchern als auch aus Nicht-Konzertbesuchern und insbesondere jungen Zuschauern zusammensetzt.

Multidimensional pathways to adolescent resilience : the case for emotional intelligence

Emotional intelligence (EI) has been reliably associated with better mental health (Martins, Ramalho, & Morin, 2010) however the nature of this relationship in adolescence remains largely unexplored. The small body of existing adolescent research is disproportionately focussed upon the ‘trait’ versus ‘ability’ EI perspective and the association with mood (versus behavioural) disorders in the form of simple, descriptive relationships that reveal little about the processes underpinning such adaptive outcomes. This research redresses this imbalance and advances the field by examining how (whether directly or indirectly linked to known stress-illness processes) and when (under which stress conditions) EI (in both ‘forms’) might be associated with better adolescent mental health, whilst simultaneously exploring the conceptualisation of EI within this developmental period. Adult literature is equivocal on both fronts. Firstly, evidence points to differential incremental contributions from ability and trait EI in the prediction of internalising versus externalising symptomatology beyond known correlates of performance, i.e., personality and cognitive ability (e.g., Gardner & Qualter, 2010; Peters, Kranzler, & Rossen, 2009). Secondly, whilst there is some evidence to suggest that trait EI may directly attenuate the effects of chronic and acute stressors to promote adaptation (e.g., Mikolajczak, Roy, Luminet, Fillée, & de Timary, 2007), the role of ability EI in this regard appears unclear (e.g., Matthews et al., 2006). Indirect links to adjustment are also hinted at; coping mediates trait EI-health outcomes in youth though not all EI-influenced ‘adaptive’ coping styles (e.g., problem-focussed) appear to contribute to this effect (e.g., Downey, Johnston, Hansen, Birney, & Stough, 2010). Using cross-sectional, self-reported data from 1,170 adolescents (mean age = 13.03 years; SD = 1.26) the present research aimed to address this lack of clarity. Preliminary regression analyses found that collectively, EI made a significant, incremental contribution to the prediction of depression and disruptive behaviour in youth beyond the influence of higher-order personality dimensions and general cognitive ability. However, of the two, trait EI appeared the stronger predictor. Structural equation modelling of conditional indirect effects found that whilst both forms of EI can buffer the effects of stressors (family dysfunction, negative life events, socio-economic adversity) on disorder, the mechanisms by which this beneficial effect operates differs substantially according to context - effects appear contingent on stressor, health outcome and level of EI. For depression, ability EI influences the selection of avoidant coping when facing family dysfunction and negative life events, whilst trait EI modifies the effectiveness of active coping under family dysfunction only. In contrast, EI directly attenuates the effects of stressors on disruptive behaviour. Nevertheless, the results of supplementary path analyses augur for the importance of both forms of EI in adaptational processes; actual emotional skill (as ability EI) appears dependent on perceived competency (trait EI) to realise advantageous outcomes. Implications for the EI construct and related intervention programmes are discussed together with recommendations for progression of the field.

Sex-Specific Mediation Effects of Workplace Bullying on Associations between Employees’ Weight Status and Psychological Health Impairments

Background: Individuals with obesity face weight-related discrimination in many life domains, including workplace bullying, especially in female employees with obesity. However, associations between experiences of workplace bullying and psychological health impairments considering weight status and sex remain unclear. Methods: Within a representative population-based sample of N = 1290 employees, self-reported experiences of workplace bullying were examined for variations by weight status and sex. Using path analyses, sex-specific mediation effects of workplace bullying on associations between weight status and work-related psychological health impairments (burnout symptoms, quality of life) were tested. Results: Employees with obesity experienced more workplace bullying than those with normal weight. Workplace bullying was positively associated with psychological health impairments and partially mediated the associations between higher weight status and elevated burnout symptoms and lower quality of life in women, but not in men. Conclusions: The result that more experiences of workplace bullying were, compared with weight status, more strongly associated with work-related psychological health impairments in women, but not in men, uniquely extends evidence on sex-specific effects within weight-related discrimination. Continued efforts by researchers, employers, and policy makers are needed to reduce weight-related discrimination in work settings, eventually increasing employees’ health and job productivity.
