This research had for purpose to perform an analytical study of the music by composer Thomas Newman and its interaction to filmic narrative. The general principles of music utilization as part of the audiovisual composition were approached. Such principles, in part, were consolidated by the Hollywood tradition. Some theoretical considerations were made, based in texts by authors such as Eisenstein, Claudia Gorbman, Michel Chion, Eisler/Adorno and Roy Prendergast, among others. The study was accomplished from three collaborations of the composer in cinematographic works, taking into account aspects as harmony, melody, rhythm, timbre and form. From the analyzed material a few stylistic characteristics of the composer were pointed out and the results of the interaction between his music and the studied films were evaluated. The work also included synopsis of the approached productions besides the reduced transcriptions of the themes composed by Thomas Newman with the respective analysis within each particular context / Mestrado / Mestre em Música

Accelerating RSA Public Key Cryptography via Hardware Acceleration

Ramesh, Pavithra 10 April 2020 (has links)
A large number and a variety of sensors and actuators, also known as edge devices of the Internet of Things, belonging to various industries - health care monitoring, home automation, industrial automation, have become prevalent in today's world. These edge devices need to communicate data collected to the central system occasionally and often in burst mode which is then used for monitoring and control purposes. To ensure secure connections, Asymmetric or Public Key Cryptography (PKC) schemes are used in combination with Symmetric Cryptography schemes. RSA (Rivest - Shamir- Adleman) is one of the most prevalent public key cryptosystems, and has computationally intensive operations which might have a high latency when implemented in resource constrained environments. The objective of this thesis is to design an accelerator capable of increasing the speed of execution of the RSA algorithm in such resource constrained environments. The bottleneck of the algorithm is determined by analyzing the performance of the algorithm in various platforms - Intel Linux Machine, Raspberry Pi, Nios soft core processor. In designing the accelerator to speedup bottleneck function, we realize that the accelerator architecture will need to be changed according to the resources available to the accelerator. We use high level synthesis tools to explore the design space of the accelerator by taking into consideration system level aspects like the number of ports available to transfer inputs to the accelerator, the word size of the processor, etc. We also propose a new accelerator architecture for the bottleneck function and the algorithm it implements and compare the area and latency requirements of it with other designs obtained from design space exploration. The functionality of the design proposed is verified and prototyped in Zynq SoC of Xilinx Zedboard.

Klassiska principer i en modern marin kontext

Hamberg, Viktor January 2019 (has links)
The principles of war have for a long time been contested and criticized for being too imprecise and vague, even questioned as to their validity and applicability in modern warfare. Despite military thinkers and officers having questioned them, the principles of war constitute a central part of the western military doctrines and regulations. The purpose of this study is to examine the meaning of the principle of concentration of force and surprise in modern naval warfare. Due to the ambiguity of the principles of war, both principles have been analysed through the theoretical views of Clausewitz, Fuller, Montgomery and Collins. Using a case study method, the two principles of war have been tested hypothetically on the battle of Baltim during the Yom Kippur War in 1973. The result of the study shows that all hypotheses were confirmed in the analysis and the principles of concentration of force and surprise were applicable in modern naval warfare. There is however, a need for further empirical studies regarding the principles of war in order to strengthen this study’s result and to test the validity of other principles in modern warfare.

‘Little houses lovable’: The portrayal of houses and homes in selected novels by L.M. Montgomery

Van Heerden, Jeanne-Marie January 2017 (has links)
Houses in literature are an important signifier, and for Canadian author L.M. Montgomery, places and especially houses were deeply meaningful. This study explores the portrayal of houses and homes in a selection of L.M. Montgomery’s novels: Anne of Green Gables (1908), Anne of Avonlea (1909), Anne of the Island (1915), Anne’s House of Dreams (1917), Emily of New Moon (1923), The Blue Castle (1926), Emily Climbs (1927), Emily’s Quest (1928), A Tangled Web (1931), Pat of Silver Bush (1933), Mistress Pat (1935), Anne of Windy Willows (1936), and Jane of Lantern Hill (1937). Montgomery’s own attachment to houses and places is evident from The Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery, Volumes 1-5 (1985-2004), Mary Rubio’s biography, Lucy Maud Montgomery: The Gift of Wings (2008) and Montgomery’s letters, My Dear Mr. M: Letters to G.B. MacMillan from L.M. Montgomery (1980). This study argues that, given Montgomery’s emphasis on the physical environment of her own life, the environment which surrounds the characters of her novels is equally important for deciphering meanings conveyed in her books. Therefore, the study attempts to ascertain what houses in Montgomery’s fiction communicate, drawing on theories of place attachment and emotional relationships with places to explain the significance of the houses in these novels and Montgomery’s depiction of them and their relation to the characters. Research on place attachment and the meaning of home helps to clarify the significance of houses in these novels. Prior analysis of Montgomery’s novels is also taken into account, as well as studies on the house in other fiction. The study shows that the houses in Montgomery’s fiction often function as a symbol for the self. They also facilitate or prevent actions or events which involve the characters, and fulfil the needs of the characters, whether these needs be physical or emotional. I use these functions as an interpretive lens through which I attempt to illuminate aspects of Montgomery’s depiction of houses in these novels as dream houses, haunted houses, houses of nostalgia or escape. Montgomery uses houses to situate the characters in her novels, both physically and emotionally. Close analysis of the passages relating to houses in these novels reveals the depth of detail, the imagery and symbolism, and Montgomery’s careful selection of words and phrases. / Dissertation (MA (English))--University of Pretoria, 2017. / English / MA (English) / Unrestricted

Bortom Avonleas idyll : – Normer och normbrott i L.M. Montgomerys Anne på Grönkulla

Fröberg, Moa January 2022 (has links)
This essay aims to examine and explore two characters, Anne, and Gilbert, in L.M Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables (1908). The paper focuses on their portrayal as normative and norm-breaking within their hometown, Avonlea. The theoretical framework is a queer theoretical approach with the main objective being norms and breaking of norms. Other common queer theoretical topics such as sexuality, identity and gender are something this paper also explore, however to a lesser extent. The analysis and discussion explore and conclude that Anne and Gilbert have multiple differences as well as similarities. They come from a similar upbringing and background as they do not have any siblings and have had to take responsibility of themselves at an early age. The two are furthermore new residents in Avonlea and have high academic ambitions. The paper moreover discusses their differences where questions about Gilbert, his behavior and privilege emerge. In Anne’s case, questions and discussions about gender norms, patriarchal structures and her transformation emerge instead. The paper establishes in the end that Anne appears to be norm-breaking whilst Gilbert does not.

Den avrättningsbara kvinnan : En tematisk analys av fallet Lisa Montgomery

Broth, Nelly, Mognesen, Sigridur January 2021 (has links)

Transforming parents: our most influential leaders

Sharp, Gary C. 11 September 2020 (has links)
In Montgomery, Alabama, interstate highways were designed and developed to decimate African-American social institutions and communities whose members were prominent participants in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. The sequence of events contributed to the social, political, and economic marginalization of the residents of Washington Park, which includes members of Grace Missionary Baptist Church. Individual, familial, and communal progress has been hindered by the oppressive actions of power wielders, including federal, state, and local government officials. The longstanding distress has caused negative shifts to occur in the value systems of many families; and assistance from external sources has not led to widespread reductions in the community’s marginalization. The circumstances create an ideal opportunity for parents to emerge as internal facilitators in the restoration of families and other social institutions relevant to the sustainability of Washington Park. This publication is a detailed plan for the design and development of the Parenting Institute as a grassroots family strengthening organization, which will place emphasis on the enlightenment, education, and empowerment of parents as the most influential leaders of the community. Enhancements in parenting practices will assist in the strengthening of people as the most important components of social, political, and economic institutions. This will lead to a reduction in the marginalization of the target beneficiaries.

It Will Seem So Nice and Grown-Uppish : An analytical essay on development towards conservative gender roles in the novel Anne of Green Gables

Firozi, Elena January 2023 (has links)
In this essay, an analysis of Lucy Montgomery's bildungsroman Anne of Green Gables has been conducted. The story of the protagonist Anne Shirley’s development into adulthood displays many aspects of the gender roles of the twentieth century in Canada as a result of her gendered upbringing. Anne's conformity to the private sphere stems from a need to solve her inherent crisis as an orphan but has the purpose of making domestic life seem desirable to the young reader. Anne of Green Gables was released in the twentieth century when women were considered to have universal traits that benefited the conservative gender roles. Therefore this essay analyses the didactic purpose of the novel, theorizing to find that the novel's purpose is to steer the reader's development toward conservative gender roles. Feminist theory provides this essay with explanations of the cause and effect of the notion of gender roles and is used as a guideline throughout the analysis. The results of this essay demonstrate that the bildungsroman Anne of Green Gables has a didactic purpose of steering the development of the reader toward the acceptance of conservative gender roles.
