Wayoro êmêto: fonologia segmental e morfossintaxe verbal / Wayoro êmêto: segmental phonology and verbal morpho-syntaxNogueira, Antônia Fernanda de Souza 12 August 2011 (has links)
Investigamos, nesta dissertação, a fonologia segmental e a morfossintaxe verbal Wayoro, especialmente, a estrutura argumental e a valência verbal. / This study investigates the segmental phonology and verbal morpho-syntax, particularly, the argument structure and valency of the verbs in Wayoro language. We aim to provide a study of these areas of the grammar of the language based on original data and subtle theoretical models to explain it. In phonology, the contrastive pairs identified show the following consonantal inventory: stops /p t tS k g kw gw/, nasals /m n N Nw/, fricative /B/ and tap /|/. The nasal consonants are post-oralized when followed by oral vowels. The vocalic phonemes /i È o E a/ show contrast in nasality and length. We describe the phonological and morphophonological processes in the data, namely, lenition, voicing, neutralization and nasal assimilation. Regarding verbal morpho-syntax, initially, we presented the characteristic or exclusive morphemes of the verbal category. The distribution of personal morphemes in Wayoro is related to the verbal valency: the absolutive personal prefixes function as transitive object and intransitive subject, whereas free personal morphemes (ergative) function as transitive subject. The verbs consist of a root, followed by a verbalizer morpheme and the thematic vowel . After the thematic vowel, verbs can receive temporal markers. We examined the internal morphology and valency of about 100 Wayoro verbs. The verbalizers occur with transitive and intransitive verbs, and therefore, are not associated with a single argument structure. Verbs may be pluralized by replacement of verbalizers by the suffix {- kw}, root reduplication and suppletion operations that pluralize the event (and not necessarily the arguments). The valency-changing morphemes are prefixes and select a specific argument structure. The prefix {mõ-~õ-} causative/transitivizer is only used with intransitive verbs, turning them transitive ones. According to Hale & Keyser (2002), intransitive verbs that allow simple (or automatic) transitivization are verbal heads that project both a complement and a specifier and can be taken as complement of an upper verbal head (V1), so that the specifier functions as subject in the intransitive sentences and as object in the transitive alternant. Tests with the causative/transitivizer prefix show that {mõ-~õ-} can be analyzed as the upper head, V1. The second valency-changing prefix investigated is the intransitivizer. This morpheme has been identified in verbs which have a transitive counterpart, without prefix, with anticausative and reflexive effects, and verbs that do not have corresponding transitive ( prefix inherent) with properties of the middle voice. Finally, we analyzed constructions in which the auxiliar {-mãNã} to order, to ask, to make takes transitive and intransitive verbs as complement and adds an agent or cause. From a typological point of view, constructions with that auxiliar may be analyzed as analytic causatives and constructions with the causative/transitivizer prefix as synthetic causatives.

Morfologia verbal do Lembaama / Morphology of lembaama verbal systemOkoudowa, Bruno 17 August 2010 (has links)
This work proposes an analysis of the verbal morphology of Lembaama (B62) according to Guthrie (1971). Officially called Obamba in Gabon, Lembaama is a Bantu language of the forest, from the Benue-Congo group and Niger-Congo phylum. As far as we know, this language has yet to receive a detailed study. It should be noted that Lembaama shows some interesting features. Indeed, the verbal morphology analysis shows that a single inflected verb contains the following elements: subject, subject marker, negative1, Tense marker, root, extension, Final Vowel or Aspect marker, negative2 occurring in a fix order in a sentence. The object marker comes after the root. Negation consists of a discontinuous morpheme: kaní. Ka- is placed before the root (by the left) and -ní occurs after the root (by the right) being the last element of this structure. The verbal derivation study reveals the following structure of Lembaama extensions: -C-, -CV-, -VC- and -CVC-.The habitual marker -ag- being the commonest extension. This study also highlights the existence of a correlation between the grammatical value and the semantic value of extensions. Hence, human and animate beings are evoked in clauses with higher transitivity than things. Therefore, transitivity is fundamental in Lembaama, as it can distinguish actions from states, for example. Tense, Aspect and Mood study defines three Tenses. First, there is a present that, because it is used without tense marker, can be merged with near future or with progressive. Then, we note two future tenses: a near future (F1) occurring without mark and a distant future (F2) marked by the auxiliary verb odze go. Finally, we count three past tenses: a recent (P1) marked by mí- with a high tone; a distant (P2) marked by máá- with a high tone too, and a remote past (P3) marked by kí be, an auxiliary verb with high tone and mí-, the recent past marker, both coming before the root (by the left). Thus, Tense marker morphemes are always placed before the root (by the left) and Aspect markers occur after the root (by the right). This analysis highlighted two Aspects: a perfective marked by the Final Vowel -í; an imperfective without a specific mark. Tense and Aspect analysis allows to conclude that Aspect is more fundamental than Tense in this language. Concerning Mood, the analysis revealed three: imperative, conditional and indicative.

Thai English as a VarietyJanuary 2013 (has links)
abstract: This study is about Thai English (ThaiE), a variety of World Englishes that is presently spoken in Thailand, as the result of the spread of English and the recent Thai government policies towards English communication in Thailand. In the study, I examined the linguistic data of spoken ThaiE, collected from multiple sources both in the U.S.A. and Thailand. The study made use of a qualitative approach in examining the data, which were from (i) English interviews and questionnaires with 12 highly educated Thai speakers of English during my fieldwork in the Southwestern U.S.A., Central Thailand, and Northeastern Thailand, (ii) English speech samples from the media in Thailand, i.e. television programs, a news report, and a talk radio program, and (iii) the research articles on English used by Thai speakers of English. This study describes the typology of ThaiE in terms of its morpho-syntax, phonology, and sociolinguistics, with the main focus being placed on the structural characteristics of ThaiE. Based on the data, the results show that some of the ThaiE features are similar to the World Englishes features, but some are unique to ThaiE. Therefore, I argue that ThaiE is structurally considered a new variety of World Englishes at the present time. The findings also showed an interesting result, regarding the notion of ThaiE by the fieldwork interview participants. The majority of these participants (n=6) denied the existence of ThaiE, while the minority of the participants (n=5) believed ThaiE existed, and one participant was reluctant to give the answer. The study suggested that the participants' academic backgrounds, the unfamiliar notion of ThaiE, and the level of the participants' social interaction with everyday persons may have influenced their answers to the main research question. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. English 2013

‘How great!’ : A morpho-syntactic and semantic study on the two roots aA and wrTörnqvist, Josefin January 2017 (has links)
Egyptology is a discipline in which new research and new approaches are continuously necessary and – in most cases – provided. In this constant flow of new research, some subject areas are left untouched. The lemmas aA and wr have continuously had a very homogenous translation although the morphological and syntactical differences are quite visible. The generally accepted translation of both lemmas as ‘great’ is very singular and raises the question of whether aA and wr should be considered synonyms or not. The study consists of two combined parts; a morpho-syntactical analysis of aA and wr and their conjugations and distributions as well as a semantic analysis on different expressions and sentences where both aA and wr occur with the same, or similar, syntactical structure. The aim is to give clarification to the correlation between the lemmas aA and wr and their interpretation. The study is not restricted to a specific time period, but regards linguistic developments as an important factor in the analysis. An important conclusion from this study is the clear, preferred use of wr as a qualifier for physical greatness, as opposed to aA which appears in contexts more related to metaphorical greatness. During Late Egyptian the opacity of the different uses of aA and wr increases and the differentiation becomes quite fuzzy.

Analyse linguistique, stylistique et prosodique de l'adjectif composé anglais / Linguistic, stylistic and phonologic study of the English compound adjectiveMissud, Jean 09 November 2018 (has links)
The first part consists in a morphologic, linguistic and stylistic study of the English compound adjective. We draw a summary of what the existing literature has said over the years about the adjectival compound form, which allows us to question the morphology of the compound process and the way this phenomenon produces new items of language by associating two or more existing words. We interrogate the possibility of links between the different compound words, notably the connections between the English compound noun and the English compound adjective. This first part also draws boundaries between different processes of morphology; once the compounding process and the compound adjective are defined, we draw a list of the adjectival characteristics of the compound adjective. After having studied the theories surrounding the English compound adjective, we set a typology of the form. This typology is built using the 1,521 instances found in 8 pieces of literature. We then focus our attention on the five most common syntactic formats found in our corpus: each of them is analyzed syntactically and semantically, then stylistically by examining how the authors of our corpus make use of the English compound adjective. The second part of the dissertation proposes to study the English compound adjective and its accentuation. We investigate what has been said in the existing literature about the accentuation of compound forms, notably on the accentuation of compounds versus phrases and on compound nouns.

Description morpho-syntaxique du nââ numèè (langue de l'extrême-Sud, Nouvelle-Calédonie)Wacalie, Fabrice Saiqë 08 November 2013 (has links)
This thesis deals with the morpho-syntactic description of Nââ Numèè, a language of the far south of New Caledonia, spoken by fewer than 1,000 speakers in the tribes of Touaourou and Goro in the town of Yate and the isle Ouen in the town of Mont-Dore.In the first part, the author explains the social facts which led to the great southern region being one of the most affected by traditional wars, colonization, evangelization, the construction of the dam at Yate and more recently, mining. In the second part, the author will identify the phonemes of the language. Then a comparison will be made between the consonant, vowel and tonal system thus established and made by Rivierre in the 1970s. This gap analysis allows the author to highlight the phonological changes in the language over almost forty years. The author then uses the traditional "distributional" method to define the different morphemes of language before proposing a categorization of lexemes. In the third part, the author deals with morphological processes used in derivation and in composition. In this chapter, it is interesting to see the increased use of verbal classifiers. In the fourth section dealing with syntax, the author offers a description of the nominal phrase with the modes and types of determination. This part also includes a presentation of the nominal substitutes, deictic and numeral systems. Then, the author describes the verbal phrase with special focus on the analysis of the aspect and temporal markers and serial verbs. In the part dedicated to the circonstants, the author focuses on the orientation system developed and the various repositories spaces used (absolute and relative). In the last part, the author exposes the different types of clauses (simple, complex and marked).

The New Voseo Culto: An Exploration of the Complexity of Familiar Address in Chilean SpanishRouse, Patrick Roy 14 May 2010 (has links)
In Chilean Spanish, second-person address is non-uniform in that the vos competes with the conventional tuteo and a third, mixed form has emerged. To add to this complexity, the form speakers choose has been shown to correspond to socioeconomic strata. Upper classes use tú, lower classes use vos, and young, middle class speakers choose the mixed form in which the verb is conjugated according to the voseo and is used with the pronoun tú. The causes and effects of this second-person schism in Chile are explored here, as well as the resulting sociolinguistic issues and consequences. In a study of printed media, television and interviewed informants, an attempt is made to confirm and validate the complexity of address in Chilean Spanish and determine the degree of the mixed voseo‟s pervasion into the mainstream.

Les emplois de "quando" dans différents genres textuels du latin préclassique au latin postclassique / The use of "quando" in different textual genres from Early to Postclassical LatinFatello, Fabienne 05 March 2018 (has links)
This corpus-based study analyses the use of quando (quandoque, quandoquidem, quandocumque) in different textual genres from Early to Postclassical Latin. From the Bibliotheca Teubneriana Latina CD-ROM (BTL-4) we have listed the instances of quando in Plaute’s Comedies, Cicero’s Discourses, Lucretius’ De rerum natura, Livy’s History of Rome and Seneca’s Moral Essays. Quando can be used as an interrogative, indefinite and relative adverb or as a temporal or causal conjunction. But the classification of these different uses is not possible without a macro-syntactic approach that combines morpho-syntactic, semantic and enunciative points of view. First, the study of this multifunctional term raises the question of its integration in the sentence structure. Thus the functional interference of its use as a relative adverb and as a temporal conjunction shows that the frontiers between syntactical functions are malleable. Furthermore, the semantic ambiguity invites us to extend the analyses to the contextual inferences to distinguish for instance its temporal and causal use. Moreover we cannot analyse the use of quando without considering its illocutionary force: for instance the questions introduced by quando perform a great variety of speech acts which reveal certain characteristics of the literary genre. Finally, the methods of Functional Grammar are necessary to study the level quando affects in the sentence structure, as the causal subordinate clause provides information on the interpersonal level and can be considered as a disjunct satellite. In the light of these considerations, it is evident that an eclectic approach is necessary to study the use of quando: only different linguistic approaches, combining the morpho-syntactic, semantic and enunciative point of view in an empirical description of its occurrences, can define the value of the different uses of quando. Thus the significance of this study resides in the multifunctionality of quando which allows us to consider a large variety of linguistic and extra-linguistic problems occurring not only at multiple levels of the sentence structure, but extended even to the larger context of the speech interaction and intimately linked to the authors writing techniques and the speakers discursive intentions.
