A Study of the Kodaly Approach to Music Teaching and an Investigation of Four Approaches to the Teaching of Selected Skills in First Grade Music Classes

Hudgens, Cecilia Kay Knox 05 1900 (has links)
This study examined the Kodaly approach to music teaching and investigated four different approaches to teaching first graders in elementary school to sing on pitch, echo (clap) rhythms, audiate tonal patterns, and audiate rhythm patterns. The approaches were the Kodaly approach, the traditional approach, and two eclectic approaches. One emphasized some of the techniques of the Kodaly approach, and the other emphasized some of the techniques of the Orff approach. The sample for this study consisted of one hundred twenty-one students in five classes from four different elementary schools. Two instruments were utilized: the standardized Primary Measures of Music Audiation (PMMA) by Gordon and the Individual Performance Test (IPT) designed by the investigator. The PMMA had two sections of forty examples each and measured the child's ability to audiate tonal and rhythmic patterns. This test was administered to the children as a group and they recorded their answers on an answer sheet. The IPT was tape recorded and administered individually by the investigator and assistants. It had two sections, rhythm and tonal. The children matched pitches and clapped the rhythms they heard. Responses were tape recorded and evaluated. Pretests were given shortly after the school year began and post-test were given eight weeks later. A completely randomized analysis of covariance was used to analyze the data. It was hypothesized that there would be no difference in the achievement of the children in the different classes to perform the selected skills. Findings revealed that the approach to music teaching does make a difference in the musical achievement of first-graders and their abilities to echo rhythms, match pitches, and to audiate rhythm patterns. The approach to music teaching does not make a difference in the musical achievement of the subjects and their abilities to audiate tonal patterns.

Weichselbaum, Anete Susana January 2013 (has links)
The present text investigates the musical-instrumental and musical-pedagogical skills and knowledge sets developed by students of a class denominated "The recorder flute in the school context". This class is offered by a graduate level institution during the second semester of the Music Teacher Education Program. The general aim of this research is to understand the modes through which students acquire, use and systematize the knowledge sets as well as the instrumental and pedagogical skills acquired, and which of these knowledges sets and abilities they value and select in order to address the pedagogical requirements and the necessary instrument skills in the aforementioned class. The specific goals proposed are related to: the collection of experiences (apprenticeship and teaching) of licenciates with the recorder; the acquisition, employment, valuing, selection and systematization of their knowledges sets and abilities; and the analysis of a teaching plan for the recorder. The methodological approach consists of a collaborative research group, in which the author participated as a research fellow and also as a teacher, in agreement with the main lecturer in this specific class, monitoring the students. Data gathering procedures included participative observation, interviews and collaborative meetings with the teacher and the students in the class as well as written registries, such as field notes and group assignment notebooks, along with audio and video materials. The theoretical reference is based on the teaching knowledges of teachers as proposed by Shulman (1986) in the field of education and adopted by Ballantyne (2005; 2006) in the training of music teachers. Of the seven types of knowledge listed by Shulman (1986), the author calls specific attention to knowledge of the subject content, curricular knowledge and pedagogical knowledge of the subject matter, which covers how to teach. In the field of music education, besides the knowledge sets, pedagogical, musical and instrumental abilities are also taken into consideration. The results of the present investigation point to the fact that comprehension of the knowledges sets and abilities adopted in this thesis is construed by academics in the second semester of the course, and notes that there is a variation between students and the tasks required. Three categories related to knowledge of the content in activities proposed inside the classroom where identified and analyzed, and musical abilities and knowledges of licenciates where listed, such as the realization of instrumental accompaniments and the preference for "playing by ear". The institutional demands of the interviewed licenciates that already teach require of these, besides the pedagogical knowledge and abilities of the content itself and the curricular subject matters, professional knowledge and abilities related to the goals, principles and values of education. These individuals highlighted that planning was made possible based on their comprehension of the process experienced during the school semester, taking into account class sequence, their activities and the reflections gleaned from these. The teaching plans of the students that already teach put into evidence the curricular and professional knowledge and abilities of these students.

Gaulke, Tamar Genz January 2017 (has links)
This research had as general objective to understand how the professional development process of music teacher occurs from its relation with the school of basic education. The conceptual view of place of Tuan and Lévy and Lussault, of professional development of Nóvoa and of biographical construction of Delory-Momberger, as well as autobiographical research and narratives constitute the theoretical-methodological reference of this research. The study was carried out through narrative interviews with four licensed teachers, which are experienced and active in basic education schools in Porto Alegre, RS. The analysis of the data was based on the macro-themes that emerged from the interview data: the work in the basic education school; the relationship with the school subjects - the other; the self-training. These macro themes are perceptible marks in the professional development process of the music teacher. The analysis indicates that the professional development of each teacher is unique and personal, since it is constituted through experiences. The other, the self and the construction of the self with the other - the place, are the axes that sustain the professional development of the teachers. It is in alterity that the teacher develops him/herself. Therefore, to recognize oneself in the experience at and with the school, there is a condition for the professional development of music teacher. This experience with the place is the toca. The toca is an internal place of formation, which, by amalgamating personal and professional formation becomes a promoter of professional development. These dynamics of the process of professional development comes from the constitution of the toca (ethos), of its dwelling, in which the teachers construct place in themselves, being constituted biographically from the school (place). The present research seeks to give greater visibility to the relations between the teacher and the school as a basis for the professional development of the teacher, thinking of the school not as a background, but of the complexity of its spatial dimension, as a way to understand the process in which it allies the training with the acting and providing clues to think about the training of teachers in undergraduate music courses.

Zimmerman Nilsson, Marie-Helene January 2009 (has links)
The way in which music teachers choose and use the subject content in ensemble and music theory in the upper secondary school is focused in this study. The point of interest is the everyday classroom teaching of music teachers. The intentions that music teachers have with their teaching is also studied. This thesis is a study of music teaching and is a subject-didactic investigation, inspired by variation theory. The overarching aim of the thesis is to study how music teachers in upper secondary school choose teaching content when teaching ensemble and music theory. The teachers’ use of the teaching content implies that they choose to focus and teach certain parts in their teaching. This choice of con- tent and how it is used is in focus in this study. The research questions are: How do music teachers choose teaching content when teaching ensemble and music theory in upper secondary school? How do music teachers use the teaching con- tent in their teaching? The data collection includes video-documented lessons and qualitative inter- views with five music teachers in upper secondary school in 2004. The analysis reveals two different choices of content. When the teachers have music and theory as the content of their teaching, it is the content that guides the teaching methods, where the teacher uses a fixed content, which is then presented in different ways; this was mainly in music theory. When the content is music activities, the music teachers adjust the activity-based content in accordance with the level of the pupils’ skills in ensemble. The differences that occur in the varia- tion theory results are closely related to the teaching content. The foundations of the two different choices of content that are made by the music teachers, as well as the significance of the learning objects, are finally discussed.
