Etude de cas à Chennai et Poudouchéry / Multilingualism and education in India : teaching of languages and French as a foreign language. A case study in Chennai and Puducherry.

Jeannot, Céline 13 December 2012 (has links)
The present work proposes a cross-approach of sociolinguistics and didactics to explore the teaching of languages, especially English, Tamil, Hindi and French, in the Indian context. The study aims at a better understanding of issues on educational management of multilingualism in India while relying on a case study located in Chennai and Puducherry (South India). The inquiry focuses on consistent links between the sociolinguistic situation of India, language education policies, and practices and perceptions of teachers in relation to languages and multilingualism. Linking these different levels of analysis occurs through a process of contextualisation that highlights some specificities of both social and individual multilingualism in India. The research questions more specifically the place of French in the panorama of language teaching in India, as well as related teaching methods and representations. The study of practices and representations of language teachers has been done through a field survey in schools in Chennai, at the Alliance française of Madras (Chennai) and at the Lycée français of Puducherry. This analysis leads to a few suggestions for a better recognition of multilingual practices by the school, so that languages and varieties of the social environment would be taken into account.

Modes d’existence et d’appropriation de l’Abhinayadarpana de Nandikesvara : étude du texte, de son édition et de son usage dans le milieu du bharatanatyam / Modes of existence and of appropriation of Nandikeśvara’s Abhinayadarpaṇa : investigating the text, its edition and its use in Bharatanāṭyam milieu

Rocton, Julie 11 December 2018 (has links)
This study focuses on Nandikeśvara’s Abhinayadarpaṇa, « The Mirror of Gesture », a medieval Sanskrit treatise about the art of gestural expression. Today this text is a very popular theoretical reference in the bharatanāṭyam milieu, the classical dance of Tamil Nadu (South-East India), since the so-called 1930s revivalism. Through philological and ethnographic approaches, this study aims at analysing the various forms and ways of appropriation of this text. The study and translation of the Sanskrit text, the analysis of intertextuality with other Sanskrit treatises and of various English « edition-translations », and the study of the contemporary use of the text by bharatanāṭyam practitioners (using original data from one year of fieldwork in Chennai and Pondicherry, 2013 to 2016) will make it possible, on the one hand, to explore the polymorphic and dynamic aspects of this treatise, whose forms both reflect and normalise practices - and, on the other hand, to distinguish a text-practice, from Ancient India to the present day, which takes the shape of a discursive and gestural commentaries.

Life Cycle Assessment of Cooking Fuels : A Case Study in Tamil Nadu, India

Gangavarapu, Venkata Teja January 2024 (has links)
Cooking stove technologies are crucial for meeting household energy needs, yet many lack access to clean solutions, leading to Household Air Pollution (HAP) and associated health risks. There is an urgent need to understand and mitigate environmental and health challenges posed by traditional stoves burning solid fuels like fuelwood. This thesis examines the environmental and human health impacts of different cooking fuel options using a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach. A case study is developed in the state of Tamil Nadu in India, considering different cooking fuel mix scenarios and sustainable transition in the sector. Key impact categories such as Global Warming Potential (GWP), Fine Particulate Matter Formation, and Human Health are examined. Findings reveal persistent challenges, particularly with solid fuels like firewood, contributing to HAP and adverse health effects. Transitioning to renewable energy sources such as Biogas and Electricity is crucial for mitigating environmental impacts and improving public health outcomes. Eliminating firewood in the Sustainable scenario fuel mix could result in a 43% reduction in GWP, an 87.5% reduction in delicate particulate matter, and a 75% improvement in human health. This study provides insights for policymakers to develop interventions promoting sustainable cooking practices and enhancing community well-being in Tamil Nadu and beyond.

Early-Holocene to present palaeoenvironmental shifts and short climate events from the tropical wetland and lake sediments, Kukkal Lake, Southern India: Geochemistry and palynology

Rajmanickam, Vijayaraj, Achyuthan, Hema, Eastoe, Christopher, Farooqui, Anjum 03 1900 (has links)
The Kukkal basin, Tamil Nadu, India, receives most of its rain from the southwest monsoon (SWM). A sediment core from Kukkal Lake preserves a continuous sediment record from the early-Holocene to present (9000 yr BP to present). The present lake is situated at an elevation of similar to 1887m a.s.l., in a small basin that appears to have alternated between a and wetland depositional environment. Climate proxies, including sediment texture, total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), C/N, pollen and geochemical composition indicate a steady progression to wetter conditions, with two stepwise changes at about 8000, and between 3200 and 1800 yr BP. The change at 8000 yr BP appears to correspond to a brief (100-150years) dry spell recorded elsewhere in India. The change at 3200-1800 yr BP consisted in a rapid intensification of the SWM, and may correlate with the initiation of the Roman Warm Period'. There is no clear evidence of changes at the times of the Medieval Warm Period' (MWP') and the Little Ice Age' (LIA'). The C/N ratio of the sediments ranges from 14.02 to 8.31, indicating that the organic matter originated from a mixture of lacustrine algae, vascular and terrestrial plants. Chemical weathering indices (Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA), Chemical Index of Weathering (CIW), and Plagioclase Index of Alteration (PIA)) are consistent with extreme silicate weathering. Pollen data show a development from savanna vegetation prior to about 8000 yr BP, followed by grassland with palms, the appearance of ferns just prior to 3200 yr BP and the establishment of the tropical humid forest between 3200 and about 1800 yr BP.

Epidemiology of dental caries and the level of oral health literacy among adolescents in rural and urban areas of Tamil Nadu, India.

Veerasamy, Arthi January 2015 (has links)
Introduction: The literature review indicated that oral health is a serious health issue among Indian school adolescents. In India, less than 5% of adolescents have access to organised public dental health services in order to identify and treat dental caries at an early stage. Oral health literacy is important for adolescents to prevent and manage dental caries in their permanent teeth. Currently, there is no formal oral health education available in both the primary and secondary level school curriculum in Tamil Nadu. Objective: This thesis was conducted to collect baseline data to measure the epidemiology of dental caries and the level of oral health literacy among adolescents in rural and urban schools of Tamil Nadu, India. Methods: Oral health literacy and the epidemiology of dental caries were measured in 974 adolescent school students (12-15 year-olds) from both rural and urban areas of Tamil Nadu, India. There were three research questions answered in this thesis using a cross-sectional descriptive correlational quantitative study design. The first research question was addressed by measuring the Decayed, Missing and Filled teeth index (DMFT) using the WHO oral health survey method. The second research question was addressed by measuring the oral health literacy of 974 adolescent participants using a self-administered questionnaire developed for this study. The third research question was addressed by examining the association between the severity of dental caries (question 1) and oral health literacy (question 2). Results: The oral health survey indicated that prevalence of dental caries among adolescents in rural and urban parts of Tamil Nadu was 61.4% with an average DMFT score of 2.03. Multiple regression analyses indicated factors such as gender, age, mother’s education, type of schools and community/caste as significant predictors of dental caries. This is the first study to assess the impact of community on oral health literacy and status of adolescents. Almost 92% of participants reported that they had never been to a dentist. In total, 1980 teeth were affected and 98.6% (1953) affected teeth were decayed and not filled. The Cronbach’s alpha score (0.651) demonstrated the developed questionnaire had good internal consistency. In total, 35% of participants had poor oral health literacy (OHL) skills and only 8.3% of participants had good OHL skills to prevent dental caries. Parent’s education, gender and community/caste were identified as significant predictors of OHL in the regression analysis. A strong negative association between oral health literacy scores and dental caries prevalence and severity was identified in the study. Conclusion: The current study is the first to find an association between oral health literacy and dental caries in an adolescent population both in international and Indian literature. The prevalence of dental caries was decreased and severity of dental caries was increased when compared to previous research in Tamil Nadu. This result implies an imbalance in availability of oral health services in Tamil Nadu, India. The study results also imply that the majority of the study population had poor or moderate oral health literacy to prevent and manage dental caries. Females, Scheduled Caste and Tribes attending public schools in rural areas were identified as the more vulnerable populations to get affected by dental caries due to their poor oral health literacy. Oral health policies should be targeted to these adolescent populations in the Tamil Nadu region. Improving oral health literacy education in the school and pre-school curriculum could help to manage oral health in adolescents.

Language policies in the European Union and India : a comparative study

Sharma, Abhimanyu Kumar January 2019 (has links)
The thesis offers a comparative analysis of language policies in the EU and India. Specifically, it examines the role of power and ideology in the formulation and implementation of language policies. The need for this thesis emerged in view of the lack of comprehensive comparative analyses of language policies which leads to epistemological gaps, including one-dimensional narratives of language policies, and theories which are lacking in precision. In light of these gaps, the thesis undertakes a comprehensive investigation of policies in eight policy domains (administration, legal safeguards for minority languages, law, education, media, healthcare, business, and social welfare) in the EU and India and in two case studies each from the EU (Luxembourg, Wales), and India (Manipur, Tamil Nadu), chosen on the basis of maximum and minimum deviation from the EU's and Indian policies. The study examines policy texts (statutes on language use in these polities), and contexts which concern the historical and socio-political factors underpinning language policies. The thesis makes three important contributions. First, it marks a break from the prevalent understanding of power in macro-level policymaking. Research to date has tended to view power as a monolithic entity, while this thesis offers evidence that power and ideology are not uniform across policy domains. Second, it bridges the text-context divide of language policy research by conducting an investigation of policy-related legislation, and highlighting the importance of texts in understanding language policies, as they reflect the changes in power structures through time. Third, the thesis proposes a new analytical concept for investigating language policies, Categories of Differentiation (COD). Categories of Differentiation refer to the sets of binaries which underpin language policies in the aforementioned case studies. These binaries include the hills-valley divide (Manipur), the Dravidian-Aryan divide (Tamil Nadu), and the autochthonous-allochthonous divide (EU) among others. Language policies have often been described as 'multilayered', and COD offer a systematic approach to exploring these multiple layers. Overall, the thesis demonstrates how comparative research aids understanding of language policies, and sets out a possible theoretical framework for conducting it.

Goreau-Ponceaud, Anthony 24 November 2008 (has links) (PDF)
