Adolescents who experienced serious abuse and neglect show a higher risk of anxious and depressive symptoms and antisocial behavior. Therefore, it is important to identify the coping strategies that favor their psychosocial adjustment. This doctorate dissertation examines the moderating role of coping strategies on the relation between maltreatment reported by 336 adolescents staying in a rehabilitation centre and their internalized and externalized problems. The first chapter presents conceptual and developmental models of coping and a literature review of the relations between different stressors, adolescents coping strategies and their psychological adaptation. In the following two chapters, the interactions between three types of abuse (emotional or physical abuse, emotional neglect) and four coping styles (emotion-oriented, problem-oriented, social diversion or distraction) are tested, for their effects on adolescents internalized problems in the first study, and on their externalized problems in the second study. Emotion-oriented coping was positively and directly related with internalized and externalized problems reported by all youths. For girls, problem-oriented strategies, social diversion and distraction showed stress-buffering effects on the relation of emotional abuse or neglect to self-reported internalized problems. Problem-oriented strategies had a similar effect on the relation between emotional abuse and self-reported externalized problems for all youths. When predicting externalized problems, other interactions revealed that the adaptive benefits of coping diminish when abuse is more serious. Hence, problem-oriented strategies and social diversion were associated with less externalized problems reported by educators only when adolescents were not maltreated and distractions were related to less aggressive behaviors only in non-maltreated girls. Social diversion was associated with an increase in self-reported rule-breaking behaviors by all youths. For boys, social diversion interacted with all maltreatment variables, so that it was related to more severe rule-breaking behaviors when boys were not maltreated. Thus, our results show more protective effects of these strategies when predicting the emotional symptoms of abused girls, and little impact on the extent of antisocial behavior in abused adolescents. These results are interpreted in relation with developmental issues related to adolescence, and with the specific vulnerabilities observed in abuse victims.

Land Use Policy in Local Historic Districts and Incentives for Compliance in the Vieux CarréDufour, Jane R. 14 May 2010 (has links)
The Vieux Carré in New Orleans is the second oldest locally designated historic district and serves as a prominent example of local historic preservation efforts; however, the Vieux Carré has a high vacancy rate. This thesis examines the effects of land use policy, including the Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance and the design review process in the Vieux Carré, on attempts to return vacant buildings to commerce. The author examines three cases of redevelopment attempts of vacant properties in the Vieux Carré. In two of the three cases, constrictions from the Zoning Ordinance not the design review process held up the redevelopment process. The other case identified owner negligence as the cause for failure in the redevelopment attempt.

[en] CURRENT SITUATION AND DEVELOPMENT PROSPECTS OF PLANNING AREA 3 OF RIO DE JANEIRO CITY / [pt] SITUAÇÃO ATUAL E PERSPECTIVAS DE DESENVOLVIMENTO DA ÁREA DE PLANEJAMENTO 3 DA CIDADE DO RIO DE JANEIRORAFAEL FERNANDES DOS SANTOS 05 August 2013 (has links)
[en] Rio de Janeiro has had a fragmented model of expansion, where many new
regions occupied not have transportation and sanitation infrastructure, and old
areas, structured, tend to be disparaged and stigmatized as places of low social
value. The effects on the city is catastrophic, affecting the routine of all the
population and hindering the control of the territory by the government.
While there were new areas to grow, the city took advantage of that. Many
neighborhoods were born, evolved and died, while new spaces were created and
encouraged. Came to Barra da Tijuca, the greatest example of how Rio de Janeiro
has expanded to meet the desires of a particular group in search of a safe and
elitist environment. Condos upper middle class were built and attracted people
from all over the city and, in parallel, its sewage was dumped in the lagoons of the
neighborhood.
While a new Rio grew, much of the city was deteriorating, especially
downtown and North Zone. In the central region, the idea of transferring
downtown to Barra da Tijuca gained strength, with large companies moving into
this new neighborhood. Modern buildings, wide open spaces and parking were the
main differences between the two regions. In the residential aspect, concern for
downtown was virtually nil.
In the North Zone, with the increase of slums and violence, traditional
neighborhoods were no longer the focus of the middle class carioca, with
stagnating real estate investments over time and making the region passed by a
process of forgetting his relevance within the context of the city, having his image
associated with violence and crime. In areas called suburbian, the situation was even worse. The old industries have moved to other cities due to the daily
violence of those neighborhoods, highlighting Benfica, Bonsucesso, Ramos and
Penha, suffering a massive stagnation over the past decades. Associated with
urban problems, prejudice was responsable for the not occupation of a large space
in the city, well structured and located.
But none of this was seen as a problem, but as a solution, because in Rio
there were still many areas to grow and receive new residents, not being
interesting recover and encourage the occupation of what had actually structure to
receive new ventures. The thought of rejection of old areas and interest in new
lasted nearly three decades and, as a consequence of this neglect, we have seen
emerge an ancient and undervalued city and another one new and prosperous,
resulting in a decentralized Rio and full of empty urban, increasingly dependent of
transport, sanitation and opening new routes, generating costs for the entire
population.
Analyzing the urban area in Rio, in North Zone, we can see how there is a
waste of urbanized areas, where there is a structured urban space, with
transportation and sanitation system established, but underutilized and virtually
without good projects being introduced. In certain parts of West Zone,
investments are numerous, without a previous and efficient infrastructure that can
receive all these investments. This is a contradiction.
Currently known as Planning Area 3 (AP 3), a huge and discredited region
in North Zone is in a strategic location, but is stigmatized by the media and
society with pejorative concepts of class, who treats it like a suburb, but the
application of that name ends up being contradictory, because, in Rio de Janeiro,
this concept is associated with an etymology and not with a urban fact. There are
in AP 3 urbanized neighborhoods and near downtown, but they are viewed
negatively, often caused by so-called opinion leaders.
AP 3 is the gateway of the city, with a strategic location to anywhere else in
the city, state, country and abroad (the international airport is located there). It is
the most populated area in the city and needs to be well treated, as a new
investment option, regardless of titles assigned to it. With its proper use, we would
have a less process of expansion toward the West Zone, giving to the Rio a efficient urban development, integrator and spending few public resources,
resulting in a territory less dispersed and more egalitarian. The lack of investment
in AP 3 has brought, besides the widespread abandonment, tragic consequences
not only for the 38 per cent of the population carioca living there, but also for the entire
city, which bears the overall expenditure of the municipality.
Carioca population grew between 2000 and 2010 from 5,857,904 to
6,320,446 inhabitants, and the population density grew from 4880.37 to 5265.81
hab/square km. Analyzing the five planning areas, we observed a population growth
across all APs in the nineties, but the representative of each one in the citys total
population was redistributed. The AP 3, which concentrates most of the
population of Rio, had a dicrease from 40.20 per cent to 37.96 per cent hab/square km, while the
West Zone had a considerable increase in that number.
The West Zone (Barra da Tijuca, Recreio dos Bandeirantes, Jacarepaguá e
Vargens) is the area that received the most investments and incentives to be
occupied, with only 14.39 per cent of the population residing there. There is still no
efficient system of sewerage, transport, sidewalks and street paving. Nevertheless,
we can see that area envolving more and more, causing a collapse not only within
the limits of the West Zone, but also affecting the traffic throughout the city. In
contrast, AP 3, with nearly 38 per cent of the municipal population, has been losing its
representativity, due to the lack of policies to encourage the attraction of new
residents and provide better services to the current.
A city like Rio de Janeiro, where there is still no efficient mass transport,
should be more compact and its residents served by quality services in short rays,
eliminating the dependence on shifts that require the use of own vehicles. The
consequences of urban sprawl is what we see nowadays, like the constant traffic
jams, due to the dependence of vehicles from those who live in areas furthest from
downtown, the high cost of deployment transportation system to meet these new
areas, need for sanitation base infrastructure, paving and lighting.
The big question is, if there is a region still largely in its horizontal and
already endowed with infrastructure, as the AP 3, investments in development and
attracting new residents would be a way to save public money and take advantage
from the current urban area of the city, contributing to a truly sustainable development. Rio de Janeiro does not have more growth cluttered spaces and
building in prime areas are increasingly rare. Seeing the AP 3 as a growth vector
of Rio is an economical way to have an efficient and inclusive urban
development. This need has been ratified by legislation through the
Complementary Law 111/11, which determined the incentive of that area and
some adjacent.
AP 3, because of its size and diversity, demands varied solutions, but the
common denominator is the need to stimulate the formal residential occupation,
urbanization, retrenchment in slums, the recovery of peripheral areas to them, that
has been assuming characteristics of informality, and improving the infrastructure
and quality of the transport system. There are many obsolete and underutilized
areas that will enable a transformation in the way of inhabiting the city.
If there is a global awareness of the urban territory, either in Rio de Janeiro
or any other city in the world, the concept of sustainable growth is meaningless,
with neighborhoods rising, developing and dying, wasting past spending and
future spending provoking. Cities can not continue with thoughts segregatórios
class and should be properly used and maintained, valuing its past and controlling
the growth process on expensive areas untouched, becoming an integrated
environment and easy to be used and administered.
Despite this negative picture, a more attentive enough to discover the
enormous economic potential of the AP 3. The housing market in certain spots is
heated and there are high expectations of its expansion with new public and
private investments that are occurring. Life in neighborhoods still retains an
aspect of good neighborliness, preserving a quality of life now lost in the more
developed districts of the city. We can already notice a special attention to the
region, with new public and private investment, with little prospect of
improvement in visibility and consolidation of growth vector proposed by the
current master plan.

Estudo da prevalência de maus tratos na infância em mulheres com dor pélvica crônica / Study of the prevalence of childhood maltreatment in women with chronic pelvic painTawasha, Kalil Antonio Salotti 22 April 2015 (has links)
Background: Chronic pelvic pain is a clinical condition of high prevalence, whose understanding of the pathophysiology involved, is still partial. IASP (International Association for the Study of Pain) define CPP as chronic or persistent pain perceived in the pelvis related structures (digestive system, urinary, genital, myofascial or neurological), often associated with emotional, sexual, behavioral and cognitive negative consequences, as well as with symptoms suggestive of dysfunction of those systems. Include both cyclic pain, such as dysmenorrhoea, the acyclic. The time point of view, it is considered chronic, as a rule, when the duration is less than six months (http://www.iasp-pain.org/files/Content/ContentFolders/Publications2/ClassificationofChronicPain/Part_II-F.pdf; accessed on November 13, 2014). Is associated with several comorbidities and marital impact, social and economic unfavorable. Although suggestive, we have no objective data from developing countries on the involvement of abuse suffered in childhood with chronic pelvic pain and its association with symptoms of anxiety and depression. Objectives: To investigate the prevalence of child maltreatment in women with chronic pelvic pain and its correlation with mood disorders. Patients and Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study, in which were included 77 women with CPP seen consecutively in an outpatient clinic for chronic pelvic pain. We chose also evaluate a group of 77 healthy women attended the general gynecology outpatient clinic. We use the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (QUESI) to assess the prevalence of poor general and specific treatment, while the risk scores for anxiety and depression were obtained by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Rating Scale (HAD) and pain intensity was evaluated from the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Statistical analysis of data was by D\'Agostino test to see if continuous variables normally distributed. We chose to evaluate the difference between the groups using the Wilcoxon test (Mann-Whitney) test and the analysis of differences between proportions used the chi-square test. To achieve the goal has been proposed a multiple correspondence analysis. We used multivariate platform to evaluate the correlation between the QUESI and the scores of anxiety and depression with robustness estimated not to consider any outliers. Results: The prevalence of childhood maltreatment were 77.9% and 64.9% respectively for women with and without CPP (p = 0.05). Regarding exposure to 3 and / or 4 multiple events of childhood maltreatment, we obtained the following rates for women with and without CPP, respectively: 23.4% and 15.6% (p = 0.05); 18.2% and 10.4% (P = 0.03). The prevalence of sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, physical neglect and emotional neglect, respectively for women with CPP and healthy, were 29.9% and 20.8% (p = 0.19); 45.4% and 31.2% (p = 0.07); 48% and 35.1% (p = 0.10); 58.4% and 44.1% (p = 0.08) and 58.4% and 41.5% (P = 0.04). Only the emotional neglect subtype showed a statistically significant difference. The prevalence of significant symptoms of anxiety and depression in groups with pain control and were, respectively, 55.8% (43/77) and 40.2% (31/77) (p = 0:05); 45.4% (35/77) and 23.4% (18/77) (p = <0.01). When we correlate the data from the instruments QUESI and HAD in CPS and control groups, we observed a positive correlation between them, but did not identify the same correlation in subtypes sexual abuse (HAD-D) and physical neglect (HAD-A) in the control group. Multiple correspondence analysis shows a correlation between the presence of chronic pelvic pain and race (non-white) and schooling below 10 years; and correspondence between significant symptoms of anxiety and depression with multiple abuse (more than two or three) and specifically with emotional neglect, emotional abuse, physical abuse and sexual abuse. Conclusions: Women with CPP have higher emotional neglect rates that the group of healthy women and higher indices of risk specific mood disorders when correlated both instruments. Patients with CPP show symptoms of depression and lack of paid work activity that are associated independently, and risk factors that can lead in the long run, the CPP development in the female population.

Maus-tratos infantis: o impacto da negligência no desenvolvimento psicossocial e acadêmico de crianças em fase inicial de escolarização / Child abuse: the impact of neglect on academic and psychosocial development of children in early schoolingPasian, Mara Silvia 05 April 2012 (has links)
Children and youths around the world are victims of domestic abuse, negligence being the most recurring category, which is associated with several harmful consequences for childhood development. The aims of this thesis were to investigate the phenomenon of childhood neglect and its consequences to the psychosocial and academic development of children in the initial stage of schooling in Brazil as well as the associated risk factors. To accomplish these objectives, the features of the caregivers and children with ages ranging from six to eight, were investigated which was organized in three groups. The first group (group 1) was formed by cases of neglect notified to the Child Protection Council; the second group (group 2) was formed by suspect cases of neglect, but not notified to the Child Protection Council, based on their school teachers´ observation; the third group (group 3) was also formed by indications of the school teachers, but by children not suspected to be neglected (reference group). Each group consisted of thirty dyads of child- caretaker. After carrying out all the relative procedures to the ethical issues, the Child Protection Council, schools and children were contacted. After obtaining the necessary authorizations, the data collection was accomplished, through the following instruments: Questionário de Caracterização Sociodemográfica (socio-demographic questionnaire); Child Abuse Potential Inventory - CAP; Child Neglect Index; Child and Youth Behavior Inventory, 6-18 years - CBCL; Child and Youth Behavior Inventory, 6-18 years/Teacher Report Form -TRF and Teste de Desempenho Escolar - TDE (School performance test). To describe the sample\'s profile of the groups, statistical analyses were performed. The results show similarities between groups 1 and 2, which, in contrast, are quite different from group 3 concerning several characterization variables. They are conceived as risk factors, highlighting families with lower socioeconomic status, lower education level of the caregivers and the lowest age of the mothers when the first child was born. Moreover, the caregivers of groups 1 and 2 also show higher potential risks for abuse than those of group 3. Furthermore, more neglect indicators were found in groups 1 and 2 than in group 3. Concerning the childhood development aspects and academic performances, children of groups 1 and 2, in general, show similar results, having shortfalls in several developmental aspects and learning difficulties at the beginning of the literacy stage. Based on these results, one can conclude that children notified as neglected and those of suspect cases expressed equally significant developmental problems during a sensitive period of their lives, the beginning of the literacy, giving rise to a huge concern since failure at this stage increases the chances of major drawbacks in their future. The scenario revealed by the present study points out the necessity of investments in children negligence prevention, supporting both scientific investigations and protective actions.

Skolkuratorers anmälningsskyldighet om barn som far illaEriksson, Jenny, Abdurahmanovic, Amila January 2011 (has links)
Sweden has an obligation to report child abuse suspicions to Social Services. According to Socialtjänstlagen (swedish constitution) 1 § Chapter 14, all employees in agencies affecting children, such as schools, have a responsibility to report their suspicions. Research shows that many abuses are not reported. The consequence of this is that Social Services does not hear about all cases of abused and harmed children. One profession where reporting is mandated is school counselors. The school counselor has a particular status in the educational community and meets many maltreated children, and children who injure themselves through their own behavior. The purpose of our study was to describe the circumstances that school counselors believe may affect their tendency to report. Using qualitative methods, we had eight interviews with school counselors from different municipalities who work with students of different ages, and who have different experiences within their profession. The result was related to the theoretical frames of the written composition by Stephen Webb’s (2006), The Rationality of Regulation and the Sociological Concepts of Formal and Informal Social Controls (Israel, 1968). Our study shows that all school counselors knew that a report had to be submitted even at the slightest suspicion, although several of them said that they in some cases avoided to report. The reasons for this, which all according to our interpretation means that the regulation and the social control of maltreated children does not always work, could have to do with the cooperation and response from the social services, or that they assumed that the involvement with the social services would not benefit the child. It could also be that the student’s situation was not serious enough to report, or that they wanted more information about the situation before reporting. Another reason could be that they assumed that there are better ways to sort out the students’ concerns within the school or other agencies, especially if it regards an older student. The study also shows that the school counselors felt there was a risk in losing the students trust when reporting their suspicions.
