The myth of the criminal and animal subjecthood in J.M. Coetzee's Disgrace

J. M. Coetzee's brutal novel Disgrace questions popular understandings of criminality and victimhood by establishing parallels between its various characters and their actions. Through close reading of Coetzee's descriptions of protagonist David Lurie's behaviors and attitudes towards women, non-human animals, and people of color compared with descriptions of the mysterious trio of men who rape Lurie's daughter and coldly kill the dogs in her kennels, I argue that the line Disgrace draws between Lurie and these men is deliberately flimsy, ultimately all but disappearing if we look closely enough at their behaviors and descriptions rather than their justifications. I also argue that the novel's perpetrators rely upon archetypical "rapist" and "criminal" constructs, resulting in an inability for them to ever accurately address their own crimes, despite Coetzee's descriptive parallels. Ultimately, I read Disgrace as suggesting that there can be no resolution for violence so long as these mythical archetypes persist. / by Ashley B. We undertook a Discourse Analysis as developed by Pêcheux (1983), Minayo (2000) and Orlandi (2005), as well as the investigation of the modal verbs can , want to, should and have to/need to , in their different modes, identifying how these verbs, as used by the respondents, relate to epistemic or deontic modalities, pursuant to Santos (1999), Santos (2000), Alves (2007) and Martins (2011). The main objective of this study was to establish a reflection on the means through which the transformations that have taken place within the family and the decline of patriarchy can have influenced the so-called decline of the paternal function , in its most traditional meaning. Analyze the aspects related to emerging concept of childhood and adolescence, the society of narcissism, how they contributed to the decline of the father , and how they influenced the decline of the paternal function and provided subsidies to violence in social interaction of young students. Specifically, the aim of this thesis was to obtain information on actions categorized as violent by young students; identify factors that contribute to school violence among young people and determine the relationship between violent sociability in young students and the paternal function. As a result, it is possible to conclude that children and young people were gradually subjected to the condition of subjects. However, changes that have been taking place in the family and in how its members are dealt with, mainly the children and the young people, have altered the relationship between parents and their children. New social actors and the State interfere in family life, by occupying the place of a symbolic father, replacing parents in their duties and weakening the authority of the father and his function. Therefore, this study leads us to the assumption that it is violence, taken as a producer of meanings that guides the current violent sociability among young students, resulting from the decline of the paternal function. / O suporte fundamental desta tese constituiu-se da psicanálise em situações sociais críticas, cujos instrumentos utilizados para pesquisa foram: entrevistas semiestruturadas para o estudo 1 e grupo focal para o estudo 2. Empreendemos a Análise do Discurso desenvolvia por Pêcheux (1983), Minayo (2000) e Orlandi (2005), bem como a investigação dos verbos modais poder , querer, dever e ter que/ter de , em seus variados modos, identificando como esses verbos, na forma utilizada pelos respondentes, se relacionam com as modalidades epistêmicas ou deônticas, conforme orientações de Santos (1999), Santos (2000), Alves (2007) e Martins (2011). O objetivo principal desta pesquisa foi refletir como os modos pelos quais as transformações na família e o declínio do patriarcado pode haver influenciado o chamado declínio da função paterna , no seu sentido mais tradicional. Analisar aspectos relativos à emergência das concepções modernas de infância e adolescência, da sociedade do narcisismo, como contribuíram para o declínio do pai , e como influenciaram o declínio da função paterna e subsidiaram a sociabilidade violenta dos jovens escolares. Especificamente, levantar informações acerca das ações consideradas violentas pelos jovens na escola; identificar fatores que contribuem para a violência escolar entre jovens e verificar a relação entre a sociabilidade violenta em jovens escolares e a função paterna. Como resultado pode-se concluir que as crianças e os jovens foram submetidos gradativamente à condição de sujeitos. Porém, as transformações na família e nos modos de lidar com os componentes, principalmente as crianças e os jovens, modificaram as relações entre pais e filhos. Novos atores sociais e o Estado interferem na vida familiar, ocupando o lugar de pai simbólico, substituindo a função dos progenitores e enfraquecendo a autoridade do pai e de sua função. Portanto, esse estudo nos leva a pensar que a violência considerada como produtora de sentidos é que norteia a atual sociabilidade violenta em jovens escolares, em razão do declínio da função paterna.

The violence, the unexpected, the quality of the support after death have a great weight in the process of mourning, and can collaborate for the installation of a complicated mourning. This research - quantitative and qualitative - aims to Analyze the results of the use of cinematographic language as a group psychotherapeutic strategy of intervention in grief for violent death (caused by external factors). Participants were invited through the internet and disseminated as snowball. An individual interview was conducted and applied the Hogan Grief Reaction Checklist (HGRC). After ten group sessions, with weekly frequency and two hours each, using the resource of specifically selected films, in the last meeting was reapplied the HGRC. The comparative Analysis between the two applications of the HGRC showed a significant improvement in the experience of mourning of the participants. The results of the research indicated that using cinematographic language as a resource for psychotherapeutic intervention brought positive results to participants / As mortes violentas, por desastres, acidentes, suicídio ou homicídio, em número crescente no Brasil e no mundo, suscitam questões importantes para a pesquisa em Psicologia, sobretudo com foco no luto. A violência, o inesperado e a qualidade do suporte posterior à morte têm peso grande no processo de luto, podendo colaborar para a instalação de um luto complicado. Esta pesquisa — quantitativa e qualitativa — tem como objetivo analisar os resultados da utilização da linguagem cinematográfica como recurso de intervenção psicoterapêutica em grupo para pessoas enlutadas, em decorrência de morte violenta. Os participantes foram convidados por meio da internet e de divulgação como bola de neve. Foi realizada uma entrevista individual e aplicado o instrumento de avaliação Hogan Grief Reaction Checklist (HGRC). Após dez sessões grupais, com frequência semanal e duas horas de duração cada, tendo sido utilizado o recurso de filmes especificamente selecionados, no último encontro foi reaplicado o HGRC. A análise comparativa entre as duas aplicações do HGRC evidenciou melhora significativa na experiência de luto dos participantes. Os resultados da pesquisa indicaram que utilizar a linguagem cinematográfica como recurso de intervenção psicoterapêutica trouxe resultados positivos aos participantes

The first axle approaches social, economic and political changes between the periods from 1975 up to 1990. Having as objective to understand how these changes influenced the standards of the young people behavior and the emergency of the young people in the experience of the armed hand assault. The second axle is centered in the construction of the careers profiles in the criminal life of six young assaltants arrested in the provincial penitentiary of the Niassa, located in the city of Lichinga, with intention to perceive who are these young people that opt in this criminal modality and why the same ones follow the world of the crime and violence, more properly the armed hand assault. The reflection that goes into the two axles places in discussion the circulation of firearms used in the civil war, the police corruption and the social inaquality as central clarifying factors for the emergency of the young mozambicans in the experience of the assault by armed hand.

The operation of the Project was proposed by the Intermunicipal Consortium of the Great ABCD, which represented the juridical collegiate instance of the seven cities, that have been acting in those places for around ten years, as a development agency for the municipalities, affecting the Public Policies and its paths of intermunicipal interactions. The study aimed to investigate the many forms of thematic, the content and the shape of the workshops received by the participants, all them indicated, in their respective cities, by its local municipalities, that was supported by the municipals secretaries of Education, Health, Transport, as well other Public Policies having transversal actuation with the Social Assistances policies. The implementation process of the workshops took twelve months of work, including stages of selection and formation of instructors, work assemblies with the respective municipal secretaries, along with the Greater ABCD Intermunicipal Consortium, local preparation seminaries, mobilization, opening and evaluation of the developed activities. The workshops were accomplished itself between the months of August and December of the year of 2006 and totalized a number of thirty nine, beginning with thirty participants, who were kept in the workshops during four hours a week, during ten weeks. The study presented a cut view about the totality of the workshops and analyses the objective and subjective meanders of such a proposal / O tema desta pesquisa refere-se à experiência realizada pelo NECA - Associação dos Pesquisadores de Núcleos de Estudos e Pesquisas sobre a Criança e o Adolescente, denominada Projeto Construção Coletiva de Espaços e Tempos de Paz que se desencadeou durante doze meses (janeiro a dezembro / 2006) em sete municípios da Grande São Paulo, na região do ABCD, composta pelos municípios de Santo André, São Bernardo do Campo, São Caetano do Sul, Diadema, Mauá, Ribeirão Pires e Rio Grande da Serra. Video Games Addiction : POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF PLAYING VIDEO GAMES ON YOUTH AND CHILDREN

Mankind has developed a lot in the field of Information Technology (IT), Computer Science and Media entertainment. Video games are also the most popular form of media entertainment and gaming environment. It has been popular long before the new generation video games idea was ever thought by the video game designers. Through our research we tried to investigate the positive and negative effects of video games on youth and children. This form of entertainment is more designed attracted among the people, due to the high sophisticated music and environment, which catches every eye. We not only analyzed the previous attempts in this area, but also tried to add some contribution to it. The excessive use of video games makes it more damaging effects on a young mind. Parents and teachers should keep a check on youngsters, and also the companies who design such violent games should keep in account that, what they show through these video games must have some logical or educational value. Many children and youngsters we found through our survey like to play video games because they do not have any other entertaining options. Violent video games are the most appreciated one among children and young people because of the detailed high quality graphics, more realistic images, use of artificial intelligence, complex game strategies, intelligent game inference engines and human-machine interaction. Parents should keep check on their children and select such video games for them which teach their children some useful things and beneficial for them in studies and near future. The teachers in school should also talk more about the advantages of educative games or physical games to develop the young minds more professional and realistic, rather than creating fantasy and fake imaginations. Our survey and research showed us that due to the high attraction of the video games, positive and negative effects are going side by side. Many youth and children do not take the video games seriously and just play them as any another game, while some video game players have disturbed their studies and health by playing the video games for many hours. Many children and young generation denied calling it as an addiction or bad habit. If violence and killing a life is entertainment then human beings will consider it, as a fun and modern society cannot be defined as civilized. Race, Social Disorganization and Delinquency

The overrepresentation of racial and ethnic minorities in crime has been an issue of debate. Some evidence, however, has shown that racial differences in offending are largely accounted for by economic disadvantage. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (n = 4,290), the relationship between race and delinquency was examined looking at social disorganization factors. It was hypothesized that there would be racial and ethnic differences in delinquency and that these differences would be accounted for by social disorganization factors, specifically collective efficacy and economic disadvantage. The results show that compared to White adolescents Hispanic adolescents have increased odds of nonviolent and violent delinquency, and Black adolescents have increased odds of violent delinquency. Contrary to expectations, social disorganization factors did not account for the racial and ethnic differences in delinquency. Unexpectedly, higher levels of collective efficacy actually increased the odds of violent delinquency.

The violent extremism represents the greatest threat towards the society of today. The school does not have an explicit assignment in the crime prevention work against violent extremism. The school and education, are important factors in preventing children and young people from being involved in violent extremism. Because of this, the school staff has an important task. The aim of this study was to shed light on school staff need to relate to and manage violent extremism in school. This study is conducted by having a qualitative method with six semistructured interviews, where the empirical information is analysed with a qualitative analysis. Further, the theoretical starting point is the theory of health known as Sense of Coherence (SOC) and Job- demands- control-support-model (JDCS), as well as Norm-critical pedagogy. Three categories could be found from the analysis. The personnel are in need of reducing uncertainty, The personnel are in need of increased support and The personnel are in need of knowledge. The conclusion is that school staff are in need of reducing uncertainty about expressing themselves wrong and dare to engage in dialogue with students. School staff are also in need of increased support in the form of collaboration with actors, access to an action plan and more resources. The school staff is also in need of more knowledge about violent extremism, the democratic mission and what the law says. Finally, they need better information and guidelines on how to act when a student risks being involved in violent extremism. / Våldsbejakande extremism utgör det största hotet mot säkerheten i dagens samhälle. Skolan har inte ett uttalat uppdrag i det brottsförebyggande arbetet mot våldsbejakande extremism. Skolan som arena och utbildning är dock viktiga faktorer för att förebygga att barn och ungdomar involveras i våldsbejakande extremism. Därav har skolpersonalen en betydelsefull uppgift. Studiens syfte var att belysa skolpersonals behov av att förhålla sig till och hantera våldsbejakande extremism i skolan. Studien utgörs av en kvalitativ metod i form av sex semistrukturerade intervjuer, där empirin analyserades via en kvalitativ innehållsanalys. Studiens teoretiska utgångspunkt var hälsoteorierna Känsla av Sammanhang (KASAM) och Krav/kontroll/stödmodellen (KKS) samt den pedagogiska utgångspunkten Normkritisk pedagogik. Analysen resulterade i tre kategorier som utgör studiens resultat och speglar studiens syfte; Skolpersonal är i behov av att minska osäkerheten, Skolpersonal är i behov av ökat stöd och Skolpersonal är i behov av kunskap. Studiens slutsats är att skolpersonalen är i behov av att minska osäkerheten över att uttrycka sig fel och våga föra dialog med eleverna. Skolpersonalen är även i behov av ökat stöd i form av samarbete med aktörer, ta del av en handlingsplan och mer resurser. Skolpersonalen är likaså i behov av mer kunskap om våldsbejakande extremism, det demokratiska uppdraget samt vad lagen säger. Slutligen är de i behov av bättre information och riktlinjer om hur de ska agera när en elev riskerar att involveras i våldsbejakande extremism.
