Density and proximity of unconventional oil and gas wells and concentrations of trace elements in urine, hair, nails and tap water samples from pregnant women living in Northeastern British Columbia

Gasparyan, Lilit 07 1900 (has links)
The Peace River Valley (British Columbia, Canada) is an area of intensive unconventional oil and gas (UOG) exploitation, an activity that can release contaminants with possible adverse effects on the fetus. My project aimed to estimate the importance of this exposure. For this aim, we 1) measured concentrations of 21 trace elements in tap water and biological (hair, urine, nails) samples from 85 pregnant women in this region; 2) compared them with those from the general population and health-based guidance values; 3) assessed their correlations between matrices; and 4) evaluated their associations with the density and proximity of UOG wells (i.e., wells within radii of 2.5 km, 5 km, 10 km, and with all wells in British Columbia around residences). Spearman's rank correlation and multiple linear regression analyses adjusted covariates were performed. Our results showed higher urinary and hair levels of certain trace elements compared to reference populations (e.g., Co, Ba, Sr, Mn, V, Ga). Concentrations in tap water correlated strongest with concentrations in hair, followed by nails and urine. Positive (e.g., Al, Mn, Cu, Ga, Cd, Ba, Cr, Sr, U) and negative (e.g., Fe) associations were observed between the density and proximity of UOG wells and the concentrations of certain trace elements in tap water, hair, and nails. Our results suggest that pregnant women living in an active area of UOG exploitation are likely to be more exposed to certain trace elements than the general population, but the association with density and proximity to wells remains uncertain.

[pt] QUEM SOMOS NÓS E QUEM SOU EU: UMA ANÁLISE DISCURSIVA E AUTOETNOGRÁFICA DAS CONSTRUÇÕES DE IDENTIDADES E DE (NÃO) PERTENCIMENTOS EM NARRATIVAS DE EXPERIÊNCIAS MIGRATÓRIAS / [en] WHO WE ARE AND WHO I AM: AN AUTOETHNOGRAPHIC AND DISCURSIVE ANALYSIS ON IDENTITY CONSTRUCTIONS AND (NON) BELONGINGS IN NARRATIVES OF MIGRATION EXPERIENCES

MARIA ALINE SILVA MARTINS 27 January 2022 (has links)
[en] In this dissertation, I seek to generate understandings about the migration processes of my family that left São Benedito (Ceará) and came to the favela of Rocinha, between the 1980s and the 1990s. In this autoethnographic study (Ellis; Bochner, 2000) I aim to look at how we evaluate our migration experiences, which can cover from the decision moment of leaving the hometown up to the present date. Specifically, based on the analysis of narratives (Bastos, 2005; Bastos; Biar, 2015; De Fina, 2008), I examine the discursive construction of identities (Moita Lopes, 2001; 2002; 2003; Snow, 2001; Duszak, 2002) and belongings (Krzyżanowski; Wodak, 2008; Angouri et al., 2020) of the participants when it comes to the way we relate to the place of origin and to the place of destination (Souza, 2006), São Benedito and Rocinha, respectively. This is a Contemporary Ap plied Linguistics study (Moita Lopes, 2006) that follows a qualitative-interpretive paradigm of research (Denzin; Lincoln, 2006). For the discursive analysis of the corpus, the tool of text analysis proposed by the Appraisal System was selected (Martin, 2001; Martin; Rose, 2007; White, 2004). The results point to three distinct movements made by the participants. One of my brothers, for example, constructs a strong belonging to his place of origin, São Benedito, while simultaneously constructing a non-belonging and a detachment from Rocinha/Rio de Janeiro. In my sister’s narratives, she still maintains a connection with her place of birth, but does not appear to have created a connection with Rocinha. All the other family members – me, mother, father and brother indicate they feel that they belong to both places, São Benedito and Rocinha.

Pépin, Yoann 09 1900 (has links)
The CeEt-482 site is located on the south shore of the Strait of Quebec, and dates approximately eight thousand years before today. The site was occupied briefly by a group related to the Gulf of Maine Archaic technological tradition. The site produced numerous lithic artifacts that are mainly represented by flakes and by a microtool industry, mostly made of quartz. The site was excavated over thirty years ago. At the time, only a preliminary analysis of the assemblage was carried out. The interpretation was that flaking activities on the site was intensive and, also, an important aspect that explains the function of the site. However, different types of pebbles used as tools and rocks with marks of impacts or grinding were found throughout the excavated area. I decided to place these tools at the centre of this research in order to verify if they corroborate the hypothesis of the site function or the intensity of flaking activities. The research question is explored with a technological organization approach which has the potential to demonstrate the way tools interact with the strategies employed by the occupants during the occupation of the site. The methodology applied to the analysis of the stone tool assemblage is based on the tool’s life history combined with the concept of design theory. This research contributes a more complete interpretation of the site that adds to the initial interpretations of the site’s function. The results suggest that flaking activities where in fact less important than seemed at first sight and happened sporadically throughout the occupation. Regarding the tools that have been studied, the intensity of activities appears to be most closely linked to the work of soft or hard organic material and linked with food preparation and consumption. In conclusion, I suggest that CeEt-482 could have played the role of a safe destination after a long period of travel where the occupants could find a large variety of resources and where they could repair equipment or gather provisions before or after another trip.

Macholdt, Janna Christina 14 March 2013 (has links)
The object of this study was to analyse the eco-stability and capacity of different winter rye and winter wheat varieties under differentiated environmental conditions in the Brandenburg region. This paper shows and discusses a methodical procedure to support the selection and recommendation of varieties with an optimised assessment pattern. Then the paper covers special aspects on climatic changes and the selection of varieties on agricultural operations in the north-eastern region of Germany. Based on results from variety trials at multiple environments in Brandenburg and using bio statistical parameters, different varieties of rye and wheat were analysed. The evaluation of yield capacity and stability includes following parameters: eco-valence, eco-regression and floating checks. Then different impact factors on variability of yield were estimated, and the reaction of varieties to different weather conditions was analysed according to the climatic water balance. The results of the different tests showed that the yield performance is determined by different environmental factors and by variety. Of winter rye the hybrid varieties compared to other variety types were considerably more capable of yield and in tendency more stable in yield, especially also under dry weather conditions. Of winter wheat the A-varieties in tendency realized more stable yields while there was little difference between the varieties of the different quality groups. The experimental data base was supplemented by an empiric study on the selection of varieties in the German region of Brandenburg which includes interviews with experts as well as a polling of the standard practice in agricultural operations. Under the empiric study the interviewed farmers said when selecting varieties they would pay particular attention to yield safety, dryness tolerance and yield capacity.

Approaches to Empire: Hydrographic Knowledge and British State Activity in Northeastern North America, 1711-1783

Marsters, Roger Sidney 07 December 2012 (has links)
This dissertation studies the intersection of knowledge, culture, and power in contested coastal and estuarine space in eighteenth-century northeastern North America. It examines the interdependence of vernacular pilot knowledge and directed hydrographic survey, their integration into practices of warfare and governance, and roles in assimilating American space to metropolitan scientific and aesthetic discourses. It argues that the embodied skill and local knowledge of colonial and Aboriginal peoples served vital and underappreciated roles in Great Britain’s extension of overseas activity and interest, of maritime empire. It examines the maritimicity of empire: empire as adaptation to marine environments through which it conducted political influence and commercial endeavour. The materiality of maritime empire—its reliance on patterns of wind and current, on climate and weather, on local relations of sea to land, on proximity of spaces and resources to oceanic circuits—framed and delimited transnational flows of commerce and state power. This was especially so in coastal and riverine littoral spaces of northeastern North America. In this local Atlantic, pilot knowledge—and its systematization in marine cartography through hydrographic survey—adapted processes of empire to the materiality of the maritime, and especially to the littoral, environment. Eighteenth-century British state agents acting in northeastern North America—in Mi’kmaqi/Acadia/Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec, and New England—developed new means of adapting this knowledge to the tasks of maritime empire, creating potent tools with which to extend Britain’s imperial power and influence amphibiously in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. If the open Atlantic became a maritime highway in this period, traversed with increasing frequency and ease, inshore waters remained dangerous bypaths, subject to geographical and meteorological hazards that checked overseas commercial exchange and the military and administrative processes that constituted maritime empire. While patterns of oceanic circulation permitted extension of these activities globally in the early modern period, the complex interrelation of marine and terrestrial geography and climate in coastal and estuarine waters long set limits on maritime imperial activity. This dissertation examines the nature of these limits, and the means that eighteenth-century British commercial and imperial actors developed to overcome them.

Late Quaternary to Holocene Geology, Geomorphology and Glacial History of Dawson Creek and Surrounding area, Northeast British Columbia, Canada

Hickin, Adrian Scott 20 December 2013 (has links)
Northeastern British Columbia was occupied by the Cordilleran (CIS) and the Laurentide (LIS) ice sheets, however, the timing and extent remains contentious. The late Quaternary and Holocene history of this area is examined by exploring geomorphic, stratigraphic, geochemical and geochronologic components of glacial, deglacial, paraglacial and non-glacial landsystems. New tools, such as GIS, LiDAR, and new geochronologic methods, such as optical dating are used to understand the Quaternary geology and geomorphology of the region. Bedrock topography represents the base of the Quaternary section and modelling shows that paleovalleys, common in this region, host extensive Neogene sedimentary records. Stratigraphies from the Murray and Pine valleys indicate glaciation prior to the Mid-Wisconsinan (MIS 3) and during the Late Wiconsinan (MIS 2). Glacial landforms record Late Wisconsinan ice-sheet coalescence and reflect the complex interaction of the LIS and CIS margins. During deglaciation, the LIS and CIS separated and glacial Lake Peace (GLP) formed. Shoreline features enable reconstruction of lake and ice configurations. Four phases of GLP are preserved. Optical ages from Phase II indicate GLP occupied the area some time between ca. 16 – 14 ka yrs ago. The apparent tilt on the shorelines provides a measure of isostatic adjustments and suggests asynchronous retreat of first the LIS, then the CIS. The transition from paraglacial to boreal conditions was driven by climate change and is recorded by vegetation sucession and cessation of paraglacial processes. Optical ages from stabilized dunes and radiocarbon ages from organics date the transition between 12 – 11.5 ka yrs ago with full boreal conditions established by 10 ka yrs ago. The Holocene is dominated by erosional processes, however some systems are aggrading. A case study on a floodplain demonstrates that resistivity (Ohmmapper) surveys provide a grain-size proxy to suppliant GPR studies, which is essential for geophysical fluvial architectural analysis. In the study, the discrepancy between planform style (classic meander model) and subsurface geophysical surveys (indicative of vertical accretion associated with braided and wandering fluvial styles) reiterates cautions that planform may not always be a functions of depositional process and one may not be used to predict the other. / Graduate / 0372 / 0373 / 0368

Santos, Wesley 18 July 2014 (has links)
This thesis aims to evaluate the impact of the Constitutional Fund for Financing the Northeast (FNE) in the state of Bahia and Pernambuco economies in the period 1989-2010. Objective accordingly verify the spatial and sectoral allocation of investment has contributed to a better geographical distribution of economic activity fulfilling their goals. Furthermore, analyzing their impact on the supply chain of these States, to establish whether the investments are distributed on a priority basis and estimate job creation based on RAIS data, checking the evolution of formal employment. For both our territorial clipping is based on a micro IBGE classification and our main database, in addition to sources already cited also includes management reports and data FNE kindly made available by the Ministry of National Integration (MI), in addition to data obtained from the publications of the Bank of Northeast Brazil (BNB). We conclude that although the FNE have considerable importance in the structuring of the northeastern economy and the states concerned, their actions were much more constrained by the logic of the market than by networking with a national regional development policy. However, there is an undeniable contribution to devolution of productive activities within the region, although this devolution is happening imperfectly and directed the few regions and even less complex sectors are the biggest beneficiaries. Finally, we conclude that the macroeconomic framework of the region and the states analyzed, although impacted by the FNE, still lacks a more fruitful role of the public sector on the articulation of a national development policy.

Too foul and dishonoring to be overlooked : newspaper responses to controversial English stars in the Northeastern United States, 1820-1870

Smith, Tamara Leanne 30 September 2010 (has links)
In the nineteenth century, theatre and newspapers were the dominant expressions of popular culture in the northeastern United States, and together formed a crucial discursive node in the ongoing negotiation of American national identity. Focusing on the five decades between 1820 and 1870, during which touring stars from Great Britain enjoyed their most lucrative years of popularity on United States stages, this dissertation examines three instances in which English performers entered into this nationalizing forum and became flashpoints for journalists seeking to define the nature and bounds of American citizenship and culture. In 1821, Edmund Kean’s refusal to perform in Boston caused a scandal that revealed a widespread fixation among social elites with delineating the ethnic and economic limits of citizenship in a republican nation. In 1849, an ongoing rivalry between the English tragedian William Charles Macready and his American competitor Edwin Forrest culminated in the deadly Astor Place riot. By configuring the actors as champions in a struggle between bourgeois authority and working-class populism, the New York press inserted these local events into international patterns of economic conflict and revolutionary violence. Nearly twenty years later, the arrival of the Lydia Thompson Burlesque Troupe in 1868 drew rhetoric that reflected the popular press’ growing preoccupation with gender, particularly the question of woman suffrage and the preservation of the United States’ international reputation as a powerfully masculine nation in the wake of the Civil War. Three distinct cultural currents pervade each of these case studies: the new nation’s anxieties about its former colonizer’s cultural influence, competing political and cultural ideologies within the United States, and the changing perspectives and agendas of the ascendant popular press. Exploring the points where these forces intersect, this dissertation aims to contribute to an understanding of how popular culture helped shape an emerging sense of American national identity. Ultimately, this dissertation argues that in the mid-nineteenth century northeastern United States, popular theatre, newspapers, and audiences all contributed to a single media formation in which controversial English performers became a rhetorical antipode against which “American” identity could be defined. / text
