INVERSE SAMPLING PROCEDURES TO TEST FOR HOMOGENEITY IN A MULTIVARIATE HYPERGEOMETRIC DISTRIBUTION

Liu, Jun 04 1900 (has links)
<p>In this thesis we study several inverse sampling procedures to test for homogeneity in a multivariate hypergeometric distribution. The procedures are finite population analogues of the procedures introduced in Panchapakesan et al. (1998) for the multinomial distribution. In order to develop some exact calculations for critical values not considered in Panchapakesan et al. we introduce some terminologies for target probabilities, transfer probabilities, potential target points, right intersection, and left union. Under the null and the alternative hypotheses, we give theorems to calculate the target and transfer probabilities, we then use these results to develop exact calculations for the critical values and powers of one of the procedures. We also propose a new approximate calculation. In order to speed up some of the calculations, we propose several fast algorithms for multiple summation.</p> <p>N >= 1680000, all the results are the same as those in the multinomial distribution.</p> <p>The computing results showed that the simulations agree closely with the exact results. For small population sizes the critical values and powers of the procedures are different from the corresponding multinomial procedures, but when</p> / Master of Science (MSc)

Elliptic multiple polylogarithms in open string theory

Kaderli, André 09 September 2021 (has links)
In this thesis, a method to calculate the genus-one, open-string corrections to the field-theory amplitudes is constructed. For this purpose, vectors of integrals satisfying an elliptic Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov-Bernard (KZB) system on the punctured torus are defined and the matrices from the KZB system are calculated. The elliptic KZB associator is used to relate two regularised boundary values of these vectors. The boundary values are shown to contain the open-string corrections at genus zero and genus one. This yields a recursion in the genus and the number of external states, solely involving algebraic operations on the known matrices from the KZB system. Geometrically, two external states of the genus-zero, open-string worldsheet are glued together to form a genus-one, open-string worldsheet. The derivation of this genus-one recursion and the calculation of the relevant matrices is facilitated by a graphical method to structure the combinatorics involved. It is motivated by the reinvestigation of the recursion in the number of external states known at genus zero, where the Drinfeld associator maps the genus-zero, open-string corrections to the corrections with one more external state. This genus-zero recursion also involves matrix operations only and is based on a vector of integrals satisfying a Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov (KZ) equation. The matrices in the KZ equation and used in the recursion are shown to be braid matrices and a recursive method for their calculation is provided. The elliptic KZB associator is the generating series of elliptic multiple zeta values. The construction of the genus-one recursion requires various properties of these values and their defining functions, the elliptic multiple polylogarithms. Thus, the third part of this thesis consists of an analysis of elliptic multiple polylogarithms, which in particular leads to relations among different classes of elliptic polylogarithms and functional relations generated by elliptic functions.

The public service anti-corruption strategy : a case study for the Department of Correctional Services

Webb, Werner Nicholaas 12 1900 (has links)
The South African Government in 2002 accepted the Public Service Anti-Corruption Strategy (PSACS) with the objective to reduce the manifestation of malfeasance in the public service. The PSACS identified various goals and objectives to be achieved at both the systemic and departmental levels. At the departmental level, the PSACS set out to increase the institutional capacity of departmental institutions, and encourage the management of risk and of discipline in the public service. Departments are required to establish the necessary capacity to formulate fraud prevention and anti-corruption policies, receive and manage allegations of corruption, and investigate allegations of corruption and detected risks at a preliminary level. To manage ethics departments should inter alia identify early signs of a lack of discipline, improve the accountability and capacity of managers to manage discipline, and encourage managers to act against transgressions. However, various authors have been critical of the formulation of policies and the establishment of structures as a policy response to public service corruption. In their view, such an approach often leads to a reduction in the efficiency and effectiveness of public programmes, and even creates opportunities for corruption. In response to such deficiencies, some argue that a compliance-based approach to public service malfeasance should be supplemented by a value-based approach with an emphasis on the development of internal selfcontrol of individuals, the promotion of trust among employees, and the promotion of a culture of responsibility. In this context, this researcher proposes that the promotion of an ethical culture could enhance the implementation of the PSACS. In this dissertation, this researcher set out to evaluate, among others, the ethical culture of the Department of Correctional Services (DCS). It was decided that a survey would be the most appropriate data collection method. A questionnaire was administered and the data was captured, analysed and interpreted. Various statistical tests were performed and the findings suggest inter alia that the promotion of an ethical culture coincides with lower levels of observed malfeasance. Consequently, when greater clarity of operational and ethics policies is obtained, an increase occurs in both the severity and frequency of penalties for malfeasance, and officials gain greater access to resources and time to execute their responsibilities, the level of observed malfeasance is likely to be reduced. The promotion of an ethical culture could significantly enhance the implementation of the PSACS. / Public Administration / D. Litt. et Phil. (Public Administration)

Access Path Based Dataflow Analysis For Sequential And Concurrent Programs

Arnab De, * 12 1900 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis, we have developed a flow-sensitive data flow analysis framework for value set analyses for Java-like languages. Our analysis frame work is based on access paths—a variable followed by zero or more field accesses. We express our abstract states as maps from bounded access paths to abstract value sets. Using access paths instead of allocation sites enables us to perform strong updates on assignments to dynamically allocated memory locations. We also describe several optimizations to reduce the number of access paths that need to be tracked in our analysis. We have instantiated this frame work for flow-sensitive pointer and null-pointer analysis for Java. We have implemented our analysis inside the Chord frame work. A major part of our implementation is written declaratively using Datalog. We leverage the use of BDDs in Chord for keeping our memory usage low. We show that our analysis is much more precise and faster than traditional flow-sensitive and flow-insensitive pointer and null-pointer analysis for Java. We further extend our access path based analysis frame work to concurrent Java programs. We use the synchronization structure of the programs to transfer abstract states from one thread to another. Therefore, we do not need to make conservative assumptions about reads or writes to shared memory. We prove our analysis to be sound for the happens-before memory model, which is weaker than most common memory models, including sequential consistency and the Java Memory Model. We implement a null-pointer analysis for concurrent Java programs and show it to be more precise than the traditional analysis.

Photonic lattices in organic microcavities: Bloch states and control of lasing

Mischok, Andreas, Brückner, Robert, Fröb, Hartmut, Lyssenko, Vadim G., Leo, Karl 29 August 2019 (has links)
Organic microcavities comprising the host:guest emitter system Alq3:DCM offer an interesting playground to experimentally study the dispersion characteristics of laterally patterned microlasers due to the broad emission spectrum and large oscillator strength of the organic dye. By structuring of metallic or dielectric sublayers directly on top of the bottom mirror, we precisely manipulate the mode structure and in fluence the coherent emission properties of the device. Embedding silver layers into a microcavity leads to an interaction of the optical cavity-state in the organic layer and the neighboring metal which red-shifts the cavity resonance, creating a Tamm-plasmon-polariton state. A patterning of the metal can in turn be exploited to fabricate deep photonic wells of micron-size, efficiently confining light in lateral direction. In periodic arrays of silver wires, we create a Kronig-Penney-like optical potential in the cavity and in turn observe optical Bloch states spanning over several photonic wires. We modify the Kronig-Penney theory to analytically describe the full far-field emission dispersion of our cavities and show the emergence of either zero- , π-, or 2π- phase-locking in the system. By investigating periodic SiO2 patterns, we experimentally observe stimulated emission from the ground and different excited discrete states at room temperature and are able to directly control the laser emission from both extended and confined modes of the photonic wires at room-temperature.

[pt] CHEIO OU VAZIO?: EFEITOS SEMÂNTICOS E SINTÁTICOS NA PRODUÇÃO DO OBJETO DIRETO ANAFÓRICO / [en] FULL OR EMPTY?: SEMANTIC AND SYNTACTIC EFFECTS IN ANAPHORIC DIRECT OBJECT CODING

ROSANE FERNANDES LIRA DE OLIVEIRA 11 November 2021 (has links)
[en] This thesis investigates the semantic and syntactic factors that affect the encoding of the anaphoric direct object (ADO) in Brazilian Portuguese (BP). The ADO can be a full DP [+definite], an accusative clitic, a stressed pronoun, or a null element (whose nature is controversial in linguistic theory). This research aims to: (i) investigate how the semantic properties (animacy, specificity and conceptual genre) of the antecedent, its syntactic function and factors pertaining to the syntax/semantic interface (thematic role) affect the encoding of the ADO in different syntactic contexts (simple sentences and syntactic island) and/or discourse (answers to WH-questions and continuations of short narratives or informal conversations); (ii) verify the influence of schooling in the strategies of ADO encoding; and (iii) discuss the nature of the null forms produced. The theoretical background incorporates the conception of language conveyed in the Minimalist Program (CHOMSKY, 1995; 2005) and an approach to issues regarding the relative accessibility of the antecedent to be resumed (ARIEL, 2001; ARNOLD, 2010; BOCK; WARREN, 1985; SANDERS; GERNSBACHER, 2004) in the grammatical encoding of a sentence (LEVELT, 1989), in the light of an on-line model of grammatical computation (CORREA, 2006; 2008; CORREA; AUGUSTO, 2007) The working hypothesis is that the production of the ODA is a function of particular processing conditions and that the semantic and syntactic properties of the antecedent affect its relative accessibility, imposing restrictions on its resumption. Six elicited production experiments are reported. The syntactic context influenced the accessibility of the antecedents, predominantly recovered by full DPs, when between-sentences in the discourse; and by minimal forms (pronominals and null elements) in complex sentences. The effects of animacy and of specificity corroborate spontaneous production data, suggesting that the full pronoun is the default option for [+animated; +specific], while the null form is the default option for [-animated; +- specific] antecedents. The conceptual genre of the antecedent was not decisive for a particular form of encoding, but it seemed to enhance the specificity of the antecedent whose conceptual gender was known. The thematic role, by itself, does not determine the form of anaphoric resumption. However, the possibility of the null resumption of an fact/event previously mentioned makes it compatible with an alternative to the sentential clitic. Schooling increased the rates of accusative clitics, especially with [+animated] antecedents (as an alternative to tonic pronouns), showing the interference of the written language on the spoken language, as well as the productivity of this form for educated speakers. The syntactic function of the antecedent did not affect ADO production. The occurrence of the null element in island contexts corroborates the view that the null element is not a variable in BP. It is argued, in the light of the on-line model, that the accessibility of the antecedent determines the nature of null element: if the representation of the syntactic structure of the antecedent is still active in working memory, it can be retrieved as an ellipsis, to be restored at the semantic interface; if it is the phi features of the antecedent or the semantic representation of its referent that remain available, ADO is encoded as a pro.
