”STARK INIFRÅN OCH UT” – forma, balansera och optimera : En analys av kroppsframställning i samtida hälsotidskrifter / STRONG FROM INSIDE AND OUT – Shape, Balance and Optimize : An Analysis of Body Appearance in Contemporary Health Magazines

Henriksson, Tilda January 2014 (has links)
Placed within the field of recent research concerning religion and contemporary religious landscapes, this thesis aims to show conceptions of human life and body displayed in ten Swedish health magazines. The analysis aims to demonstrate the appearance of body and bodily experience and in addition see in what way ”westernized” religious traditions and methods from east Asia may contribute to perspectives of health. The main theories for the study are objectified versus phenomenological understanding of the human body by Drew Leder (1992; 1990) and Kristen Zeiler (2010). The quote in the main title is from the empirical material (Hälsa & Fitness, 2014 (11), cover). ”Strong from inside and out” depicts the core of the outcome, indicating both biomedical and holistic perspectives. With science as a provable reference, the individual’s body seems to be an object to control and shape to optimize goals of esthetic or physical benefits. Here are many mental aspects involved as well as social factors, which shows that the human is a phenomenological creature. The thesis suggests that in order to accomplish health and a healthy relationship – not only towards the body but living through it – the human need to cultivate the sensation of wholeness. Having no clear counterpart, this aspect seems to be easily provided through eastern traditions and methods, treating the human as “one”.

Teaching for the objectification of the Pythagorean Theorem

Spyrou, Panagiotis, Moutsios-Rentzos, Andreas, Triantafyllou, Dimos 09 May 2012 (has links) (PDF)
This study concerns a teaching design with the purpose to facilitate the students’ objectification of the Pythagorean Theorem. Twelve 14-year old students (N=12) participated in the study before the theorem was introduced to them at school. The design incorporated ideas from the ‘embodied mind’ framework, history and realistic mathematics, linking ‘embodied verticality’ with ‘perpendicularity’. The qualitative analyses suggested that the participants were led to the conquest of the ‘first level of objectification’ (through numbers) of the Pythagorean Theorem, showing also evidence of appropriate ‘fore-conceptions’ of the ‘second level of objectification’ (through proof) of the theorem. The triangle the sides of which are associated with the Basic Triple (3,4,5) served as a primary instrument for the students’ objectification, mainly, by facilitating their ‘generic abstraction’ of the Pythagorean Triples.

My body/my playground: Seeking subjectivity beyond the objectification of advertising

Young, Kamuela Ann 12 1900 (has links)
My Body/My Playground is a theoretical and historical inquiry which firmly locates the spaces in which consumption has infiltrated much of the thinking, and in turn daily practices, of those who understand themselves to be American middle class. It is my theory that the American middle class has become so firmly entrenched in consumption that it has rendered its members objects to, rather than subjects within, its culture. My Body/My Playground narrates the historic and cultural foundation of the hegemony of consumption in an effort to understand an aspect of America's lost subjectivity. It then refocuses our attention on the marked bodies (both tattooed and pierced) of generations X and Y in an effort to locate a possible window in which the body can be employed as a vehicle toward reclaiming subject status. In the end, this text both opens the ways we might collectively read body marking and offers new ways to read personal acts of resistance in an effort toward reclaiming a sense of subjectivity without being forced to exchange it for middle class privilege.

Sexual compliance och Självobjektifiering : En studie på gymnasieelever i årskurs tre / Sexual compliance and Self-objectification : A study of students who are in their last year of upper secondary school

Blom, Ida, Dahlgren, Siri January 2018 (has links)
Studies have shown that a considerate amount of young adults agrees to have sex, despite not actually wanting to have sex (also known as sexual compliance). No previous studies have studied the phenomenon in a Swedish context. The current study examined sexual compliance and self-objectification among students in their final year at Swedish upper secondary school. Two self-objectification-variables were examined: body surveillance and body shame. Onlinesurveys that contained the self-objectification questionnaire OBC-Y and questions concerning sexual compliance were distributed. 102 women and 55 men were included in the analysis. The results showed no significant differences in self-objectification between men who had been sexually compliant and men who had not. Women who had been sexually compliant had a significant higher body-surveillance, compared to women who had not been sexually compliant. No significant correlations or differences were found between how individuals perceive they have been affected by sexual compliance and self-objectification, the participant’s sex or in what kind of relationships sexual compliance had occurred. The participants’ most common reason for sexual compliance was to satisfy their partner’s needs, and the most common reason for not wanting to engage in sex was because the participants were not in the mood for having sex. Future interventions are discussed.

...Do you? #MeToo! : A study on consumer behavior towards sexual appeal in advertising after the worldwide #MeToo-uprising

Rakocevic, Gabriella, Eliasson, David January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to explore how stakeholders’ view of sexual advertisement has been affected by the ‘#MeToo’-uprising and Time’s Up movement. A qualitative study has been conducted in order to gather information regarding stakeholders view of sexual appeal in advertising and how they have been affected by these movements. In this study, participants have been giving their thoughts and beliefs on this subject, which later on have been compared and analyzed in relation with existing theories. The findings of this study indicates an increased resistance to sexual advertising by the society due to the ‘#MeToo’-uprising and Time’s Up. Although, the resistance was greater among females than by males in this study. This is potentially due to the fact that women are the ones who constantly are being objectified in advertisement today, and throughout history. The practical implications of this thesis is that it could be to use for marketing firms who are engaged in advertising which contains sexual elements to better understand how ‘#MeToo’ and Time’s up have affected consumers’ view of sexual appeal in advertising. The original value of the study is new insights regarding consumers’ view of sexual appeal in advertisement as an effect of the ‘#MeToo’-uprising and the Time’s Up movement, which not have been studied before.

O Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio e a constituição do estudante nota 1000 : seja qual for a sua escolha, preste o ENEM!

Dal Moro, Marília Bervian January 2017 (has links)
This research studies the National Secondary Education Examination (ENEM) and its effects on the ways a student can be successful at this test. The investigation’s problematic was organized from the following question: How are constituted, in Facebook social medias, the successful students in the National Secondary Education Examination (Enem)? Dismembering this question, two specific objectives were established: to map, in materials from the social media Facebook, the ways of being a successful student at Enem; to analyze the objectification and subjectivation processes and disciplinary practices associated with them, present at the gathered material that act on the subjects that prepare themselves for the examination. Concepts of governmentality and discipline of bodies and knowledge were used as theoretical contributions, in the Foucauldian perspective. The collected empirical material is composed of more than 100 posts (and related reports) collected between October 2015 and July 2017, from Facebook pages directed to students who are preparing themselves to take the examination The analytical strategy used to operate on this material was the discourse analysis as discussed by Michel Foucault. The result of this examination showed that the processes of subjectivation and objectification present in the posts reinforce the production of a dedicated, studious, disciplined subject who achieves his goals (a good Enem performance) from his individual effort. In addition, techniques of the bodies and knowledge can be evidenced, involving control of time, space and the monitoring of their own academic performance that are configured as an important strategy of self-regulation. In this sense, the research indicates that, rather than serving as a form of entry into College, the examination produces effects on the constitution of students and strengthens the idea that studious and dedicated candidates are more likely to be successful.

“Every Body Has A Story” : A Multimodal Analysis on the Discursive Construction of the Athletic Form

Johansson, Simon January 2018 (has links)
This study sought to examine how the prototypical male athletic form and the prototypical female athletic form are discursively constructed when a sports magazine has full control of what material to produce and publish. What makes up the ‘athletic form’ involves all the various traits and characteristics that are attached to the notion of what it means to be an athlete and what it means to have an athletic figure. The theoretical foundation was built on theories about gender in the media with a strong focus on objectification and (hyper)sexualisation, and previous research on gender in sports reporting has shown evidence of a strong gender bias where women athletes are both objectified and sexualised while women’s sports in general is portrayed as significantly less interesting and valuable compared to men’s sports. In order to study the discursive construction of the athletic form, the material – the 2017 edition of ESPN Magazine’s The Body Issue – was analysed through the method of Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis. While there were several features and traits that were universal to both genders, such as toughness and strength, there were also differences of significant importance. There was a distinct clash between the notion of being athletic and being feminine as athleticism was not deemed a feminine trait, and efforts were even made to show how the women athletes are still “normal women” despite being athletes. Plus, a male athlete’s body was depicted as being purely about function with its appearance not a matter of concern. A female athlete’s body, on the other hand, was likewise about function but large emphasis was also focused on the notion of attractiveness and beauty, and that women athletes are not only tough and strong but also beautiful. Overall, the construction of the female athletic form contained a sexual aura that was forever present.

Social Media and the impact of business hierarchy on knowledge sharing within an organization: Case of SoftX.

Tchape, Philippe, Wilcox, Colin January 2016 (has links)
In a rapidly growing global economy businesses must effectively manage their assets to remain competitive and promote company growth. Many companies are only now beginning to realize that employee knowledge is a valuable asset to their business and also needs to be managed. Organizations are exploring different ways to improve the sharing of knowledge within a business and how to keep employee’s with key knowledge within the business. This study investigates social media and the impact of business hierarchy on knowledge sharing within an organization. The use of social media, in our particular case, wikis, within an organization is investigated as part of the broader term Enterprise 2.0. This study is based on the theoretical understanding of wikis as tools that enable internalization, externalization and objectification of knowledge. This study investigates what may be the contributing factors that affect an employee’s use of a centralized wiki for knowledge sharing. This study focuses on the employees of a British software development and training company, SoftX, and used a mixed method research strategy based on the use of online surveys and face-to-face interviews. We used an online tool, SurveyMonkey, to register and correlate responses to our survey. In total, 99 responses were received and semi-structured, face-to-face interviews were conducted with five employees.   Correlations were used in establishing foundation for the analysis of the variables. Finally, the causality between the assumed factors affecting the use of the SoftX wiki is tested using multiple linear regression analysis. Several important factors presented themselves as a result of our study at SoftX which could explain the apparent lack of use of their wiki as a means of knowledge sharing within the business. The analysis demonstrates that the use of the SoftX's wiki by employees was influenced by organizational, personal and technological factors.
