Typografiska riktlinjer och textframställning för smartphones

Christensen, My, Pihlgren, Johanna January 2012 (has links)
This research focuses on the issue of how to best structure text on a Smartphone screen. The factors involved in this research are text size, white space, text and line lengths, serif and sans serif fonts, pictures in text and contrast.  The methodology of our research is based on a normative Swedish able-bodied person, as well as on relevant literature, personal analyses, interviews with people in the trade, an online survey, and a test performed with a focus group. The results are that a text written for Smartphones is best structured with: several paragraph divisions made with blank lines, with pictures where the picture has an informational purpose, and text length based on category of subject. The picture should be placed above the body text. Longer texts should be set with a scroll-function. Contrast is of great importance on mobile phones as texts can be read properly even when set in negative. In addition, using serif or sans serif is of no importance. According to the results both serif and sans serif can be read without difficulties on a Smartphone. Text size should be slightly enlarged in relation to the default settings on the mobile device. Since word division is not supported on screen, short words are recommended when possible to prevent a highly uneven right end.

Drawing Lines

Raciborski, Monika Julia 15 May 2008 (has links)
My work uses process as a course of action that marks the death of moments through a continuous stream of consciousness. I metaphorically link disparate pieces of information to the human condition in order to present multiple readings through juxtaposition. I assemble both abstract and figurative subject matter in a collage-like manner through methods of cropping and fragmentation to symbolize the disjuncture I feel is indicative of how we experience the world through short-lived thoughts, feelings, and actions.

Eriksson, Lars January 2012 (has links)
I min analys utgår jag ifrån Johnstons teorier och analysrerar sedan trailrarna till Avatar, The Final Destination, Tron: Legacy, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, The Three Musketeers, The Adventures of Tintin, Men In Black 3 samt The Smurfs.

Deneault, Eric 11 1900 (has links)
Somatic stem cells usually exhibit a very different behavior compared to pluripotent stem cells. The molecular basis of embryonic stem cell self-renewal was recently decrypted by the relative straightforwardness with which we can now purify and maintain these cells in culture for long periods of time. However, this is not the case with hematopoietic stem cells. In order to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of hematopoietic stem cell self-renewal, I developed a novel gain-of-function screening strategy, which bypasses some constraints found with these cells. Starting from a list of more than 700 candidate nuclear factors and asymmetric division factors, I have identified 24 new factors that increase hematopoietic stem cell activity when overexpressed. I have also found that nine of these factors act extrinsically to hematopoietic stem cells, i.e., the effect comes from the engineered feeder cells in co-culture. Moreover, I have revealed a new transcriptional regulatory network including five of the factors identified, i.e., PRDM16, SPI1, KLF10, FOS and TFEC. This network is particularly similar to that involved in osteoclastogenesis. These results raise the hypothesis that osteoclasts might also be part of the functional hematopoietic stem cell niche in the bone marrow. Furthermore, I have identified a second regulatory network involving SOX4, SMARCC1 and several factors previously identified in the laboratory, i.e., BMI1, MSI2 and KDM5B. Besides, several lines of evidence tend to show that there are fundamental differences between mouse and human hematopoietic stem cells.

Hochfrequenz‐Kommunikation gedruckter Antennen in herausfordernden dielektrischen oder metallischen Umgebungen / High-frequency communication of printed antennas in challenging dielectric or metallic environments

Zichner, Ralf 06 December 2013 (has links) (PDF)
This doctoral thesis focuses on research and development in the field of novel, optimized and printed antenna structures for UHF and SHF-RFID applications in challenging dielectric and metallic environments. These antenna structures have a high level of functionality, the manufacturing costs are low and they can easily be integrated. At the beginning of this work, based on wave equations it had been deduced that the propagation of electromagnetic waves in different media is dependent on the two material parameters permeability and permittivity. Based on this knowledge and further application- and manufacturing-specific parameters (resonance frequency, radiation characteristics, impedance, properties of the object which is to be identified (form, geometry, permeability and permittivity) and manufacturing-specific properties (substrate, material and printed layer thereof)), dipole antenna designs for different dielectric environments (air, paper, glass or wood) were designed, investigated with the help of a simulation tool, manufactured employing screen and gravure printing technologies and characterized in an anechoic chamber. The employed printing technologies are very dynamic processes which depend on various process parameters. In order to improve the functionality of printed antenna structures, several dependencies between the printing processes and the achieved antenna properties have been investigated. Summed up, it can be stated that next to all manufacturing-specific dependencies, the antenna design itself is the most significant factor influencing the achievable antenna properties. Next to carrying out research on dielectric antennas in the near field, finding novel antenna concepts for the realization of highly functional UHF-RFID-transponder-antennas for the application on metallic objects was also part of this investigation. Important to account for is that the metallic objects influence the propagation of electromagnetic waves. In order to efficiently use this physical property of the reflection of electromagnetic waves, novel UHF-reflector-antenna configurations have been designed. Afterwards, its antenna-polarizations behavior was investigated in several simulations before the antenna was manufactured employing screen printing technology and characterized in an anechoic chamber. The developed antenna-configuration showed impressive RFID-reading distances up to 8.1 m (with a RFID-reader transmitting power of 1 W ERP) and compared to the state-of-the-art technology (reading distance approx. 5 m). Therefore this technology enhances the reading performance (distance) by approximately 60 %. In order to improve the communication quality of future RFID-systems, also novel, multi-directional 3D-RFID transponder antenna structures with a resonance frequency of 5.8 GHz were designed. Because of the increased resonance frequency compared to already existing UHF-RFID systems, the usage of a broader-band RFID-frequency range is possible (5.725 GHz – 5.875 GHz (150 MHz) instead of just several kHz). This allows identifying significantly more objects (> 100) in parallel. The three-dimensional layout of two antenna parts vertical to each other allows a directional (not omni-directional) radiation characteristic outside the enclosed volume of space. Because of this, the influence of dielectric materials (for instance content of product packages) on the functionality of the antenna could be significantly reduced. Also, it was shown that the designed 3D-antenna structure could easily be integrated directly on the interior of for instance product packages employing screen printing technology. After folding/erecting the product package, the antenna receives its three dimensional shape and its verified improved performance.

Kinetic modeling of the polypropylene photothermal oxidation

Francois heude, Alexandre 19 June 2014 (has links) (PDF)
Developing numerical tools for polymer lifetime prediction constitutes a promising opportunity for shortening the duration of material certification procedures in the automotive industry without decreasing their reliability. This PhD thesis aims at modeling the photothermal oxidation of isotactic polypropylene (iPP), which is responsible for the alteration of both its mechanical and aspect properties. The adopted approach consists in coupling the kinetics of photo- and thermo-oxidation reactions with physical phenomena, such as oxygen transport and UV-light attenuation in the material thickness, in order to describe all the physico-chemical changes. Upper-scale properties, from which will be defined the end-of-life criteria, will be calculated afterwards by applying the suitable structure-property relationships. The main challenge was to extend the pre-existing kinetic model of thermal ageing to photothermal ageing by taking into account initiation reactions of photolysis. Heavy campaigns of ageing and characterization tests made on a reference iPP, as well as an exhaustive capitalization of literature data of other iPPs, have allowed elaborating a kinetic model of photothermal oxidation and to generalize it to the whole iPP family in large domains of oxygen partial pressure (from 0.2 to 50 bars), temperature (from 40 to 230°C) and UV-light exposure (variable intensities and light sources) describing both natural and accelerated ageing conditions. The experimental validation of the model has allowed substantiating the kinetic approach and showing its limitations, as well as highlighting some numerical issues. The model has been designed in order to be an upgradable numerical tool which will allow, at term, optimizing the representativeness of the ageing testing devices and the performance of commercial iPP formulations. All these theoretical and numerical developments are prone to be applied to the photothermal degradation of other types of polymer substrates, but also in other application fields of the macromolecular photochemistry such as UV-photopolymerization.Keywords: Polypropylene, photothermal oxidation, oxygen diffusion control, screen effect, kinetic modeling, lifetime prediction.

Idea Mirrors – Einsatz großer Wandbildschirme zur Förderung diskontinuierlicher Innovation in der Softwarebranche

Koch, Michael, Ott, Florian 09 May 2014 (has links) (PDF)

The screen as boundary object in the realm of imagination

Lee, Hyun Jean 09 January 2009 (has links)
As an object at the boundary between virtual and physical reality, the screen exists both as a displayer and as a thing displayed, thus functioning as a mediator. The screen's virtual imagery produces a sense of immersion in its viewer, yet at the same time the materiality of the screen produces a sense of rejection from the viewer's complete involvement in the virtual world. The experience of the screen is thus an oscillation between these two states of immersion and rejection. Nowadays, as interactivity becomes a central component of the relationship between viewers and many artworks, the viewer experience of the screen is changing. Unlike the screen experience in non-interactive artworks, such as the traditional static screen of painting or the moving screen of video art in the 1970s, interactive media screen experiences can provide viewers with a more immersive, immediate, and therefore, more intense experience. For example, many digital media artworks provide an interactive experience for viewers by capturing their face or body though real-time computer vision techniques. In this situation, as the camera and the monitor in the artwork encapsulate the interactor's body in an instant feedback loop, the interactor becomes a part of the interface mechanism and responds to the artwork as the system leads or even provokes them. This thesis claims that this kind of direct mirroring in interactive screen-based media artworks does not allow the viewer the critical distance or time needed for self-reflection. The thesis examines the previous aesthetics of spatial and temporal perception, such as presentness and instantaneousness, and the notions of passage and of psychological perception such as reflection, reflexiveness and auratic experience, looking at how these aesthetics can be integrated into new media screen experiences. Based on this theoretical research, the thesis claims that interactive screen spaces can act as a site for expression and representation, both through a doubling effect between the physical and virtual worlds, and through manifold spatial and temporal mappings with the screen experience. These claims are further supported through exploration of screen-based media installations created by the author since 2003.
