"Estudo colorimétrico da translucidez de materiais restauradores odontológicos" / Colorimetric Study of the translucency of restorative odontologic materials.Goveia, Jane Cleide 07 April 2005 (has links)
When an anterior tooth is restorated, the whole remaining tissue protection technique and functional recuperation of the dental element can be compromised if the choice of the color of the restorative material is not adequate. The familiarity with the color and light interaction with matter theories may help with the task of choosing the restorative material shade. The challenge in searching for an ideal restorative material in its esthetic function was always obtaining the proper translucency of dental enamel. However, this translucency makes the restorative material suffer an influence of the background color, which can be the protection material color or, more commonly, the dentine color. Concerning the odontologic esthetic restorative activities, it was possible to conclude from this work that: 1) Colorimetry can be an important way for the selection and communication of the restorative material shades; 2) The results show that the background color has a large influence on the final color of the restoration; and 3) The shade guides must be reformulated so that it take into consideration the thickness of the restorative material and background color.

Previous issue date: 2012-02-27 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The aim of this study was to evaluate in vitro through the push-out test, if the use of opaque glass fiber posts (Exacto – Angelus [PO]) and translucent (Exacto
Translucent – Angelus [PT]), adhesively cemented into the root with dual resin cement (Variolink II - Ivoclar Vivadent) under different polymerization time had an
influence on the bond strength in three different root canal thirds. Forty-eight singlerooted extracted human premolars were selected from the Tooth Bank UEPG for
research. They had their crowns sectioned to form roots with 15 mm in length. All teeth received endodontic treatment and then were divided into 6 groups (n=8), to
receive the cementation according to the type of glass fiber post (opaque vs.translucent) and the time of photoactivation of resin cement (20, 40 and 60 seconds).
After storage in water at 37° C for one week, the teeth were embedded in acrylic resin and sectioned perpendicular to its long axis to form discs 1 mm thick, with two
discs for each root third, and then were taken to the machine universal testing. The push-out test was performed at a speed of 0.5 mm/min. The data were statistically
analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's test (p = 0.05). The mean values of bond strength (MPa) and standard deviation (SD) for groups in the cervical third, middle and apical
regions were: PO20 - 21.02 ± 3.52, 15.83 ± 4.94 and 5.20 ± 10:48; PO40 - 14.42 ±
3.98, 12.12 ± 4.40 and 11.59 ± 4.89; PO60 - 16.27 ± 7.14, 13.33 ± 5.22 and 16.99 ±
7.82; PT20 - 18.34 ± 5.47, 10.83 ± 4.63 and 9.98 ± 4.76; PT40 - 17.51 ± 6.55, 14.06
± 3.85 and 10.95 ± 4.65; PT60 - 19.42 ± 5.86, 15.35 ± 5.43 and 12.77 ± 5.93). There were no significant differences between the types of fiber posts used and the different times of polymerization (p>0.05) in relation to the root area were statistically significant differences only between the cervical and the other thirds (p>0.05). It can
be concluded that the bond strength of the root canals was not affected by the type of glass fiber post (opaque vs. translucent) and photoactivation time.

Étude des propriétés physico-chimiques et biologiques de ciments biomédicaux à base de carbonate de calcium : apport du procédé de co-broyage / Study of physico-chemical and biological properties of biomedical calcium carbonate based cements : contribution of the co-grinding processTadier, Solène 26 November 2009 (has links)
Implantation of bone substitute materials using minimally invasive surgical techniques requires specific properties for the material including resorbability, injectability and adequate radio-opacity. The control of such properties of the material is of prime importance to meet a surgeon's requirements. In this context, this study deals with two different mineral cements: the first one is only composed of calcium carbonate phases and the second one is a mixture of equal amount of calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate phases. An original methodology involving complementary analytical techniques was implemented to thoroughly investigate the grinding mechanism of separated or mixed reactive powders constituting the solid phase and its effects on cement reactivity and properties. We show that co-grinding the solid phase decreases the mean size of the particles and favours both a homogeneous mixing and good contact between the components, leading to a decrease in the setting time. We also set two original protocols designed to evaluate paste injectability and phase separation during paste extrusion. Co-grinding leads to synergistic positive effects on cement injectability and radio-opacity. It allows maintaining a low and constant load during the extrusion of paste, which composition remains constant. Moreover, the cement's mechanical properties can be enhanced by lowering the L/S ratio because of the lower plastic limit. To be able to follow in situ the injection of the bone cement using X-ray radiography, strontium has been introduced as a contrast agent in the cement composition. Two different routes have been investigated: SrCO3 has been added to the solid phase or SrCl2 has been dissolved in the liquid phase. We show that co-grinding process permits to homogenise strontium distribution in the cement allowing us to optimise the minimum amount of strontium to add into the cement paste to reach the radio-opacity required by ISO 9917-1 standard. Moreover, adding SrCl2 in the liquid phase makes the cement paste more viscous and diminishes its injectability. Release tests performed on Sr-loaded cements show a sustained release of strontium at 37°C and pH 7.4. Finally, in-vitro cell tests have shown the excellent behaviour of osteoprogenitor cells, especially on cements including SrCO3. The last part of this work deals with the study of the crystallization of aragonite CaCO3 in the presence of phosphate ions, naturally present in biological fluids, to better understand the setting ability of calcium carbonate cements in-vivo. Using the constant composition crystal growth technique, we show that the presence of phosphate ions, even in very low amount (concentration < 0.5 µM) diminishes both the nucleation and the crystal growth rates of aragonite. This work contributes to the optimization of the properties of calcium carbonate-based cements and a better understanding and control of their behaviours during implantation and their evolution in-vivo. From a fundamental point of view, this multidisciplinary work performed in model conditions in-vitro and completed by preliminary in-vivo experiments have underlined the interest in combining these two approaches to identify and understand the phenomena and the chemical reactions involved during the setting of biomedical cements.

Análise da integridade da membrana basal epitelial durante a geração, persistência, e o desaparecimento da opacidade corneana tardia após injúria corneana / Analysis of the integrity of epithelial basement membrane during the generation, persistance, and disappearance of late corneal opacity after corneal injuryGustavo Küpper Marino 31 July 2018 (has links)
Determinou-se, portanto, a correlação entre a reparação da membrana basal epitelial e a consequente redução da opacidade e restauração da transparência corneana / PURPOSE: To determine the correlation between epithelial basement membrane (EBM) regeneration and the disappearance of myofibroblasts from anterior stroma and consequent restoration of corneal transparency after different types of injury in rabbits. METHODS: Thirty-two rabbits had one of their eyes included in one of the 3 study groups: (1) -9 diopters (D) photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), (2) Two vertical partial-thickness (350 um) corneal incisions, or (3) Bacterial keratitis, whereas the opposite eyes served as unwounded control group. The animals were examined, sacrificed, and had their corneas analysed in different time points in order to investigate the corneal wound healing process using immunohistochemistry and transmission electron microscopy. RESULTS: In the \"-9D PRK\" group, corneas at 1 month after surgery had dense corneal opacity and no evidence of regenerated EBM. However, by 2 months after surgery small areas of stromal clearing began to appear within the confluent opacity, and these corresponded to small islands of normally regenerated EBM. By 4 months after surgery, the EBM was fully regenerated and the corneal transparency was completely restored in the ablated zone. In the \"corneal incisions\" group, the two dense, linear corneal opacities observed at 1 month after the procedure progressively faded during the next 2 months. The EBM ultrastructure was fully regenerated and there were no myofibroblasts at the site of the incisions by 1 month after the procedure, including around the epithelial plugs that extended into the stroma. In the \"bacterial keratitis\" group, all the corneas that have been infected presented dense stromal scarring, vascularization, myofibroblasts in the full stromal thickness and no evidence of EBM regeneration by 1 month after the infection. There was a definite decrease in opacity during the next 3 months, besides ultrastructural evidence of EBM regeneration and disappearance of myofibroblasts in the most anterior part of the stroma, which persisted only in the most posterior stroma where the endothelium and Descemet\'s membrane were damaged. CONCLUSION: In the rabbit model, spontaneous resolution of myofibroblast-mediated corneal opacity (fibrosis) after high correction PRK or infectious keratitis is triggered by regeneration of normal EBM structure and function. Conversely, incisional wounds heal in rabbit corneas without the development of myofibroblasts because the EBM regenerates normally by 1 month after the injury. Therefore, it has been determined the correlation between the EBM regeneration and the restoration of corneal transparency after different types of corneal injury

L'évanescence du corps chez quelques auteurs postmodernes : domaines francophone et anglophone : Marie-Claire Blais, Pascal Bruckner, Marcel Moreau, John Banville, Ian McEwan, Joyce Carol Oates / [The vanishing body in some postmodern authors] : [french and english-speaking fields] : Marie-Claire Blais, Pascal Bruckner, Marcel Moreau, John Banville, Ian McEwan, Joyce Carol OatesPop, Andreea 30 September 2016 (has links)
The vanishing body depicts a state of extreme precariousness and reveals a progressive loss of substance and vitality which results in the disembodiment of the conscience. The way from being “all body” to being “out-of-body” is hallmarked by three visual categories, each one being assigned a certain classical element: stone, for opacity (the territory of Thanatos), erotic fire for the flesh representing translucency and air and glass for transparency, reminding Narcissus. In this structure water is always the transversal element. The theme is therefore sustained by a network of thresholds such as: the wall, the organic layer and the transparent or invisible screen. With every threshold comes the idea of transgression. Passing into another state or dimension interrupts the contact with reality which fades swiftly away and makes room for another time-space configuration gradually defined by death and illness, by joy and thrilling giddiness. The vanishing body tends to inhabit a no man’s land ever more present as the first one fades away. It is thus submitted to various temporal regressions which concern the embodied consciousness and evolves as a “crack” finally producing the separation body-conscience. Within the realms of Thanatos and the stone the evanescence concerns the representation of the statue which stiffens and then recovers the “flesh-state” progressively. The marble, the plaster and the sand present themselves as three “stages” of dematerialization. Coming back to life means entering a state of tepidness of the revived flesh. As the sexual temperature increases it reaches a threshold of erotic liquefaction which then diminishes to a new form of symbolic coldness represented by physical decay and loss of sexual interest. In the field of transparency the body suffers several forms of detachment stretching from the mirror reflection as expression of a newly-born ego to the extreme weakening of the reflexivity which alters the sense of self. Window, window display and transparent shield underlie the self-effacement and create the (illusion of) inhabitable space.Peak of the vanishing process, the ethereal body is finally connected to the air as classical element. This ultimate form of corporeality express the disembodiment of the conscience in symbolic projections of both joy and suffering. It shows a state of absolute precariousness which points out the fact that by loosening the grip on the immediate reality the consciousness tends to gradually build up an engram of the body which ensures the reincorporation and by that, the survival. The take-off, the overflight and the landing describe three forms of “aerial” vanishing which states a symbolic return to opacity declined through images of densification: the steam, the fog, and the “polished” opacity of the night represent a comeback to the starting point of reflection. The story of the vanishing body, which starts and ends through images of death, is nevertheless the story of the continuous return to life and its possibilities.

Présences de la marionnette contemporaine : figure, figuration, défiguration / Presences of the contemporary puppet : figure, figuration, disfigurementPostel, Julie 29 March 2019 (has links)
Contemporary puppetry reinvents the relationship between dramatic and plastic gestures, inviting us to reconsider the principles and the implications of the act of figuration. The performing art works, generated by these experiences, avoid the designation of a fixed, material and unique puppet-object, so that a binary approach, opposing humans and objects, is no longer sufficient to consider the specificity of puppetry arts. Addressing the “presences of the puppet”, the thesis examines the puppet as a figure and a place for frictions between materials, bodies, spaces and wave mediums (lights and sounds). Such a figure, refusing tobe fixed in the visible, in the forms and the bodies, dramatizes its own disfigurement. Thus, the specificity of puppetry is the persistence of a fragile and discontinuous dramatic presence, despite the dislocation of the two bodies of the figure (material and virtual). Built on a central body of performing art works (by Les Ateliers du spectacle, the Clastic Théâtre, Phia Ménard, the Morbus Théâtre, La Mue/tte, Marta Pereira, the Rémouleurs, Benjamin Verdonck and Gisèle Vienne), and extending to other theatrical creations, installations and exhibitions, which offer a synchronic view on the margins of contemporary puppetry, this research examines the effects of circulation and spatialization of dramatic presence, which derive from the puppet disfigurement. The question is how the artists develop a spectral stage approach, based on the tension between the opacity of inert and inanimate objects and the evanescence of dematerialized figures. From an aesthetic and poïetic perspective, the research looks at the technical principles of the conception of a figure “in between” the bodies and objects, and its dramaturgical capacity to make visible the dream, the madness, the doubt, the hallucination. Finally it considers the specificity of the spectators’ position and work in front of such disfigured puppets.

New model for the 5-20 cm wavelength opacity of ammonia pressure-broadened by methane under jovian conditions based on laboratory measurementsChinsomboon, Garrett 12 October 2012 (has links)
In order to fully understand the role methane (CH₄) plays in the microwave emission spectra of the deep atmospheres of the outer planets, over 280 laboratory measurements of the opacity of ammonia in a methane environment have been made in the 5-20 cm wavelength range. All opacity measurements were made with either 100 or 200 mbars of ammonia and with 1 to 3 bars of added methane in the 330-450K temperature range. A formalism for the absorptivity of ammonia broadened by methane has now been developed and had been applied to the Hanley et al. (Icarus, v. 202, 2009) model for the opacity of ammonia. Due to methane's relatively low abundance at Jupiter (~0.2% by volume), its effect on the microwave spectrum which will be observed by the Juno MWR (Microwave Radiometer) will be minimal. However, these experimental results will significantly improve the understanding of the microwave emission spectrum of Uranus and Neptune where methane plays a more dominant role.

Laboratory Measurements of the Millimeter Wavelength Opacity of Phosphine (PH3) and Ammonia (NH3) Under Simulated Conditions for the Cassini-Saturn EncounterMohammed, Priscilla Naseem 18 April 2005 (has links)
The molecular compositions of the atmospheres of the giant planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune) are fundamental to understanding the processes which formed these planets and the solar system as a whole. Microwave observations of these planets probe regions in their atmospheres from approximately 0.1 to several bars, a process otherwise unachievable by visible and infrared means. Many gases and various cloud layers influence the millimeter wave spectra of the outer planets; however phosphine and ammonia are the main microwave absorbers at Saturn at pressures less than two bars. Understanding the pressure induced absorption of both constituents at observational frequencies is therefore vital to the analysis of any observational data.
Laboratory measurements have been conducted to measure the microwave absorptivity and refractivity of phosphine and ammonia at Ka-band (32-40 GHz) and W-band (94 GHz), under conditions characteristic of the atmosphere of Saturn. The results were used to verify the accuracy of the phosphine formalism created by Hoffman et. al (2001) for use at millimeter wavelengths. Based on the laboratory measurements conducted, new formalisms were also created to express the opacity of ammonia at the measured frequencies.
An important method for the study of planetary atmospheres is the radio occultation experiment ??method that uses radio links between Earth, and the spacecraft which passes behind the planet. The Cassini mission to Saturn, which will be conducting such experiments at Ka-band as well as S (2.3 GHz) and X (8.4 GHz) bands, has prompted the development of a radio occultation simulator used to calculate excess Doppler shifts and attenuation profiles for Saturn, utilizing the newest formalisms for phosphine and ammonia. The results indicate that there will be unambiguous detection and profiling of phosphine and ammonia, and predictions are made for the pressures at which loss of signal is anticipated.

Determining Nighttime Atmospheric Optical Depth Using Mars Exploration Rover ImagesBean, Keri Marie 16 December 2013 (has links)
Martian clouds and dust play an important part of the radiative transfer and energy balance budget. To assist in fully understanding the impact of clouds and dust, the complete diurnal cycle needs to be characterized. One of the best methods to track diurnal variations on Mars is by measuring optical depth. The spatial and temporal trends of optical depth give insight into the dust and water cycles of the Martian atmosphere.
Until now, spacecraft could only obtain optical depth during the day. In this thesis, nighttime images from the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit are used to calculate nighttime optical depth using photometric methods to capture star flux. Bright stars in well-known constellations are used in this analysis. The observed flux was compared to the expected flux to give nighttime optical depth values. The observed nighttime optical depth was consistently similar to the daytime optical depth values on both an individual image and sol-averaged basis.
Recommendations are made going forward to use the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity for conducting an optimal nighttime optical depth campaign to fully characterize the diurnal dust and water cycles of Mars. The Curiosity rover is well suited for nighttime imaging and can potentially provide valuable insight into the nighttime dust and cloud trends.
