Previous issue date: 2011 / Resumo: O objectivo deste trabalho, foi o estudo de um grupo social formado essencialmente pelos antigos trabalhadores mozambiqueños na desaparecida República Democrática Alemã, conhecidos atualmente como "Magermane". Procurou-se estabelecer linhas de continuidade e ruptura entre o passado transnacional deste colectivo como migrantes trabalhistas e seu presente como grupo reivindicativo obliterado pelas esferas do poder, o qual leva 20 anos lutando por seu reconhecimento econômico e social em Moçambique. Este país africano, com uma história de ocupação colonial efetiva de não mais de 70 anos, depois de sua independência de Portugal em 1975, se transformou numa República independente, assumindo um projeto de desenvolvimento que a transformaria, entre 1977 e 1987, numa espécie de nova colônia dos países socialistas do chamado "Segundo Mundo", e posteriormente, com o fim da guerra fria e a queda do Muro de Berlim, tornar-se-ia numa depositaria dos novos postulados neoliberais. Estes antecedentes históricos são cruciais para o entendimento dos processos que intervieram na produção do Estado pós-colonial atual. Um processo que transparenta aquilo que constitui um dos fundamentos das "narrativas de injustiça" Magermane, e que consistem em denunciar uma realidade social que se sustenta e reproduz a partir da presença e persistência de um Estado contra sua sociedade, o qual recrear uma estrutura social conhecida, que situa na ponta de sua hierarquia uma elite empresarial patrimonialista. Uma estrutura que parece contemporizar com as percepções e representações de formas de dominação passadas, entendidas como superadas. Uma estrutura, finalmente, que se alimenta e reproduz de sua população, à qual persiste em tratar como súbditos / Abstract: The aim of this work, went the study of a social group formed essentially by the ancient Mozambican workers in the missing German Democratic Republic, known at present like "Magermane". It looked for establish lines of continuity and breaking-off between the transnational past of this community as labour migrants and his present as a obliterate vindicate group by the spheres of the power, which carries 20 years struggling by his economic and social recognition in Mozambique. This African country, with a history of effective colonial occupation of no more than 70 years, after his independence of Portugal in 1975, transformed in an independent Republic, assuming a project of development that would transform it, between 1977 and 1987, in a species of new colony of the socialist countries of the called "Second World", and later, with the end of the cold war and the fall of the Wall of Berlin, it would became in a depository of the new neoliberals postulates. These historical antecedents are crucial for the understanding of the processes that took part in the production of the current postcolonial State. A process that show what constitutes one of the foundations of the Magermane's "narratives of injustice", which consist in reporting a social reality that sustains and reproduces from the presence and persistence of a State against his society, which recreate a well-known social structure, that situates in the top of his hierarchy a patrimonialist business elite. A structure that seems to be accommodating toward to the perceptions and representations of old forms of domination, understood as surpassed. Representations of political violence in contemporary Middle Eastern fictionEl Masry, Yara January 2016 (has links)
Today many Middle Eastern states are experiencing political violence, either in the form of foreign occupation, civil war, revolution or coup d’état. This regional violence is not dissociated from international politics. In fact many foreign states are directly involved through influencing, financing or manipulating the situation, and have subsequently been the target of violent attacks themselves. Responding to this situation, a plethora of academic and artistic output concerning Middle Eastern terrorism has emerged from the West. These efforts, especially in English-language fiction, have been mainly reductive and simplistic and have contributed to furthering an atmosphere of mistrust and Islamophobia that emerged after 9/11. Yet in the decade following 9/11 little attention has been given to Middle Eastern writers who have been treating the subject of political violence in their own fiction and whose works are available in a variety of languages. This thesis analyzes five Middle Eastern novels that depict major regional conflict zones. Alaa Al-Aswany, Orhan Pamuk, Assaf Gavron, Yasmina Khadra, and Mohsin Hamid’s novels describe the nuances of their respective contexts: Egypt, Turkey, Israel/Palestine, Iraq and Pakistan. The following analyses highlight the complexity of Middle Eastern political violence and shed light on how these authors perceive or respond to Terrorism discourse in their fictions.

La présente thèse étudie à la fois les réalités de la présence chrétienne en Mésopotamie ainsi que l’image que les chrétiens se sont données d’eux-mêmes. Installé sur les rives du Tigre et de l’Euphrate, le christianisme de l’empire perse s’est diffusé à l’ombre d’un pouvoir non chrétien, comme dans l’empire romain. Toutefois les destinées des deux christianismes, celui d’Occident et celui d’Orient, se sont séparées lorsque l’empire romain est devenu chrétien. Les chrétiens de la Mésopotamie sassanide ont dû alors osciller entre l’hostilité franche du pouvoir et les périodes de tolérance jusqu’à la chute de la dynastie au milieu du VIIe siècle. Le christianisme mésopotamien fut caractérisé par une forme de diversité à la fois linguistique et religieuse, marqué par la porosité avec les autres groupes, contre laquelle les autorités religieuses n’ont cessé de délimiter des frontières claires. Il s’est progressivement étendu à l’ensemble des couches de la société sassanide, jusqu’aux élites dirigeantes, et jusqu’aux campagnes. Alors, une production littéraire et historiographique d’ampleur a contribué à la formation d’un portrait cohérent et linéaire dans la documentation syro-orientale dominante, issue de l’Église de l’Est. Ailleurs, des mémoires divergentes des chrétiens de Perse nous sont parvenues. / This dissertation looks at both the realities of the Christian presence in Mesopotamia and how the Christians constructed their own image. Established on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, Christianity during the Persian Empire it developed under a shadowy non-Christian power, as with the case with the Roman Empire. However, the fate of Western and Eastern Christianities diverged when the Roman Empire became Christian. In Sasanian Mesopotamia, the treatment of Christians wavered between direct hostility from Zoroastrian power and periods of tolerance, until the fall of the dynasty in the middle of the 7th century. A form of linguistic and religious diversity characterized Mesopotamian Christianity. The lines between Christians and the other communities were narrow, which caused religious authorities to draw clear boundaries between Christians and non-Christians. Christianity expanded into the whole Sasanian society, including the peasantry and ruling elites. Therefore, after the 5th century, there was a large proliferation of East-Syrian literature and historiography, which had a key role in the development of the dominant Christian image within the Church of Persia. However, other literary traditions passed down different views of the Christians of Sasanian Mesopotamia.

Classical Poetics in Modern ChinaEstep, Chloe January 2021 (has links)
The question of the relationship between modernity and poetic classicism has typically been investigated through the lens of classical-style poetry, which is to say, by examining poetry written in the modern period which adheres to existing poetic forms and eschews the European influences and free-verse style of New Poetry (xin shi). But as premodern poetry existed within a classical media ecology alongside calligraphy and painting, to understand the ways conventional poetry confronted modernity, this dissertation argues, we must also understand the way this media ecology was transformed, as well as how this constellation of modes shifted from a literati practice during imperial China to a modern, even revolutionary practice in the twentieth century. I argue that changing conceptions of the zi, or character, were central to this transformation, and to the production of poetic classicism in the modern period. I understand the zi as a material, visual, and theoretical site at which the temporal, political, and aesthetic properties of poetry are articulated, a site which transgresses the boundaries between calligraphic inscription, pictorial representation, and poetic utterance.
Covering a wide variety of media, including underground literary journals, political cartoons, paintings, typography, and theatre, this study investigates the ways changing conceptions of the zi allowed writers, artists, poets, and politicians to adapt classical poetics to contemporary political concerns. At stake is more than an expanded--or even revisionist--history of twentieth-century Chinese poetry. Rather, by tracing processes of canon formation, dissolution, and rearticulation in a way that reveals the role of literature in crafting political sentiment, this project shows how so-called traditional culture has been leveraged in support—and critique—of Chinese nationalism today.

Pictorials and the Transformation of Chinese Fiction in the Era of Photolithography (1900-1910)Yang, Chung-Wei January 2022 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on fiction and pictorials (huabao, 畫報) in the early twentieth century and its relation with the new visual technologies of the time, mainly photolithography, but also lantern slides and photography. It explores how these visual mediums were self-reflected in fiction and pictorials and how they connected these two literary expressions, as well as their constant transformation. It concludes that this type of intermediality and self-reflexivity came as a response to China’s modernization during the late Qing Empire (1868-1911). Most scholars agreed that photolithography was the catalyst for reproducing visual images in large quantities, which facilitated the hybrid publishing space of pictorials and, in tandem with the other visual mediums, allowed them to act as a multimedia platform. My dissertation demonstrates how fiction also participated in this new visual media ecology created by photolithography and thus contributes to the exploration of an aesthetic, social, and political moment in the late Qing Empire. Major texts discussed in this dissertation include Sequel to Dreams of Shanghai Splendor 續海上繁華夢, The Flower of the Sea of Sin 孽海花, The Tales of the Moon Colony 月球殖民地小說, and The Current News Pictorial 時事畫報, as well as other critical works that also reflect modernization, propaganda, anti-imperialism, and cosmopolitanism.
It is widely assumed that this intermedial experimentation was introduced to China with the global trend of modernism in the 1920s and 1930s. However, my dissertation demonstrates an earlier experiment in the 1900s in the literati’s first attempt to directly respond to modern visual and printing technologies. I argue this early experiment should be understood as one of the last attempts to revitalize the traditional Chinese chapter novels (Zhanghuixiaoshuo, 章回小說) during a time when they were gradually being displaced by Westernized modern fiction.
I further demonstrate that by depicting the material production of the pictorials, the artists made them not merely a static medium that captured the development of the cities, but rather a transformative medium that developed alongside these cities. My approach will challenge the current methodology that views pictorials as the transparent publishing medium that passively recorded the sociopolitical changes, thus redefining the dynamics of the pictorial images, its production and modernization. These discoveries and analyses will illuminate the transformations of both Chinese pictorials and fiction, and the brave experimental spirit of their writers and artists during the technological transition at the turn of the twentieth century.

Evaluation of Semiochemicals for Attractiveness to Multiple Tortricid (Lepidoptera) Pests in Apple OrchardsGiri, Ajay P 28 October 2022 (has links)
Tortricid moths (Lepidoptera) are known for their outstanding olfaction capabilities that allow them to detect, process, and respond to chemical information emitted by host or non-host plants. Such an ability to filter out odors from the complex mixture to locate their host has allowed researchers and integrated pest management (IPM) practitioners to develop and implement semiochemically-based pest control strategies. The major goal of this study was to evaluate, under field conditions, the response of male and female oriental fruit moth (OFM), codling moth (CM), redbanded leafroller (RBLR) and three lined leafroller (TLLR) to experimental kairomone lures in commercial apple orchards in Massachusetts. My results indicate that (1) addition of benzaldehyde to Megalure® or to TRE2266 significantly increased captures of OFM males but not of CM males, (2) benzaldehyde was a strong male attractant-it was as attractive as Megalure® to OFM males, and (3) TRE2266 attracted significantly more RBLR than any other lure and by adding benzaldehyde it became attractive to TLLR. These findings highlight the opportunity to work with benzaldehyde to develop more efficient semiochemical-based monitoring and control systems for tortricid moths.
