The present work gives a study on CN- - Cu+ and OCN- -Cu+ coupled pairs doped KCl single crystal, by using Ionic Thermal Current (I.T.C.) and Optical absorption techniques. These pairs were detected through a systematic correlation study between different samples: KCl + 1% KCN; KCl + 1% CuCl; KCl + 1% KOCN; KCl + 1% KOCN + 1% CuCl and KCl + 1% KCN + 1% CuCl, were the last sample shows unporposely doping OCN-, compled with Cu+. The observed optical absorption bands, at room temperature, were in 210, 228, 242, 252, 260 and 290 nm for KCl + 1% CuCl + 1% KCN crystal. Only the last absorption band was not seen in KCl + 1% KOCN + 1% CuCl samples. Diferent bands are associated with possible interactions between Cu+ and CN-, as also Cu+ with OCN-. The ITC curves for the last three crystals were better fitted with two single ITC´s curves, whose temperature peaks are at 53 and 55 K; 54,3 and 56,6 K; 53,3 and 56,1 K, respectively. The lowest temperature ITC band (curve 1) in KCl + 1% KOCN is attributed to the (16O12C14N-) molecule and the highest temperature ITC band (curve 2) is due to the (18O12C14N-) isotropic molecule. For KCl + 1% KOCN + 1% CuCl samples curve 1 was associated with isolated OCN- and curve 2 with Cu+ perturbed with OCN-. With KCl + 1% KCN + 1% CuCl, the two techniques were not good enough to identify Cu+ - CN-, compling, it should be necessary to apply another type of techniques, like luminescence. The correlations of the experimental results were done through the determination electric dipole moment (p), activation energy (Ea∗) and temperature peak (Tm∗) parameters

Cavity-enhanced detection of biologically relevant magnetic field effectsSheppard, Dean January 2016 (has links)
Magnetoreception is the ability of some animals to use the weak magnetic field of the Earth for navigation over long-distance migrations. It is a well-known phenomenon, but its underlying biophysical mechanisms remain poorly understood. One proposal involves light-induced, magnetically sensitive chemical reactions occurring within cryptochrome proteins, rationalised via the radical pair mechanism (Chapter 1). The absence of evidence in support of this hypothesis is in part due to the lack of sufficiently sensitive techniques to measure magnetic field effects (MFEs) in biological samples. Cavity-enhanced detection, most commonly in the form of cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) or cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy (CEAS), is widely used in the gas phase to provide significant sensitivity gains over traditional single-pass measurements (Chapter 2). However, successful studies in the condensed phase are less prevalent due to the additional background losses inherent to the sample. This thesis reports on the application of broadband (i.e. monitoring > 100nm) variants of CRDS and CEAS to the study of MFEs on the radical recombination reactions of flavin-based systems in solution. The broadband CRDS (BBCRDS) instrument employed in Chapter 4 is able to monitor the spectral changes induced by magnetic fields with submicrosecond time resolution. However, the need to scan both the probe wavelength and time delay to construct time-resolved spectra leads to prohibitively long acquisition times, and hence exposure of sensitive samples to high numbers of photons. The broadband CEAS (BBCEAS) studies reported in Chapter 5 combine the high irradiance and spectral coverage of a supercontinuum radiation (SCR) source with a CCD detector to simultaneously acquire absorption spectra across the visible region (480â700nm). The CW nature of this technique precludes the possibility of following radical pair kinetics in real time. In an effort to combine the respective advantages of these two instruments, which individually have represented powerful advances in capability, a new cavity-enhanced technique is reported for the first time (Chapter 6). The result, optical cavity-enhanced transient absorption spectroscopy (OCTAS), is able to simultaneously monitor spectral evolution and associated MFEs on the microsecond timescale, with comparable sensitivity to the existing techniques. Magnetic responses in animal cryptochrome proteins have successfully been recorded using all three techniques, lending considerable weight to the hypothesis that these molecules are at the heart of the magnetic sense in animals.

Task structure, dyadic relations, and athlete role in team-sports settings : implications for athletes' self, relational, and collective efficacy beliefs and performancesHabeeb, Christine Marie January 2017 (has links)
The performances of athlete pairs correspond to the agency observed in self, relational, and collective efficacy beliefs. A dyadic perspective offers potentially important conceptual and methodological advantages to the investigation of interdependent action. The general purpose of this thesis was to investigate how athletes influence one another in athlete pairs of different (i.e., distinguishable) roles with a specific focus on the efficacy-performance relationship. Chapters 1 and 2 provide the general introduction and review of literature on dyads and efficacy beliefs. Chapters 3-6 include original research. In Chapter 3 relationships among the individual- and dyad-level performances of cheerleading pairs competing at a national-level competition were assessed to provide a measurement tool for dyadic performance settings in which athletes have distinguishable roles. In Chapter 4 person-related sources of variance (in line with the Social Relations Model framework) in athletes’ efficacy beliefs and performances were examined during repeated performance trials of a paired-cheerleading stunt-task with distinguishable roles. The purpose of Chapter 5 was to examine the efficacy-performance predictive chain of an athletic dyad task to extend Feltz’ (1982) efficacy-performance path analysis in an individual sporting context in conjunction with the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model appropriate for dyads with distinguishable roles. The purpose of Chapter 6 was to conduct a replication of the Social Relations Model investigation in Chapter 4 using same-gender distinguishable dyads and extending the framework to four-person cheerleading groups. The final chapter is a summary of the findings with commentary on the findings’ implications, strengths and limitations of the studies, identification of future research directions, and significance of the findings. Overall, the findings in this thesis support that task structure, dyadic relations, and athlete role in a team-task influence how athletes perceive and are perceived relative to self, relational, and collective abilities, with some effects including implications for efficacy-performance predictive relationships.

A presença da oralidade na correspondência amorosa de Fernando Pessoa / The presence of orality in the love letters of Fernando PessoaGiovana Thais de Lima Cardoso 26 March 2012 (has links)
Currently, both the spoken language and the written language have been analyzed jointly (together) rather than dichotomously they once were. Through current studies about the orality and the scripturalism, it is possible to infer that many features of these two ways of language manifestation are shared. The occurrence of this phenomenon will depend on the level of formality required, the genre in which the speech is inserted, among other factors. From this perspective, the present dissertation will investigate how the orality marks are presented in the letter genre, more specifically, in the love letters of the poet Fernando Pessoa sent to Ophélia Queiroz, and what are the reasons for this use. This dissertation, aggregated to the research line of Conversation Analysis, is based on the postulates of Schegloff e Sacks (1973), Stubbs (1983), Marcuschi (1987, 1993, 1999), Preti (1997, 2003), Urbano et al (2002), Silva (2006, 2009), Andrade e Aquino (2006), Risso (2006), Gómez (2008) among other important researchers. Generally, Pessoas work is analyzed mainly from a literary perspective, thus having it as a research corpus about the orality marks is something new and very attractive to stakeholders in these two areas of knowledge. All letters of Fernando Pessoa will be duly analyzed by the perspective proposed above, in order to check the existence of the orality marks in the selected text, mainly, those related to conversational pairs, conversational markers and lexical choices common to orality.

Varieties of Tone: Frege, Dummett and the Shades of MeaningKortum, Richard D. 01 January 2013 (has links)
In clear and lively prose that avoids jargon, the author carefully and systematically examines the many kinds of subtly nuanced words or word-pairs of everyday discourse such as 'and'-'but', 'before'-'ere', 'Chinese'-'Chink', and 'sweat'-'perspiration', that have proven resistant to truth-conditional explanations of meaning. / https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu_books/1108/thumbnail.jpg

The Acute Effects of Moderately Loaded Concentric-Only Quarter Squats on Vertical Jump PerformanceCrum, Aaron J., Kawamori, Naoki, Stone, Michael H., Haff, G. Gregory 01 April 2012 (has links)
Limited research exists examining the effect of moderately loaded conditioning activities that are employed as part of a strength-power potentiating complex (SPPC). Additionally, no studies to date have explored the effects of using a concentric-only quarter back squat protocol as part of an SPPC. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a moderately loaded (50–65% of 1RM) concentric-only quarter back squat protocol on the occurrence of potentiation effects at various time points. Twenty men who could quarter back squat a minimum of 2.4 times their body mass (3.7 ± 0.7 kg·per body mass) participated in this investigation. All subjects participated in 3 conditions: control (CT), a 50% of 1RM trial (50POT), and a 65% of 1RM trial (65POT). One minute before each condition, a maximal countermovement vertical jump (CMJ) was performed. One minute later, the subject performed 1 of 3 conditions: CT condition, 50POT, or 65POT, followed by vertical jumps at 0.5, 3, 5, 10, and 15 minutes after conditioning activity. A force plate was used to quantify displacement, peak power output, peak force, and the rate of force development for each CMJ. There were no significant differences (p > 0.05) in any of the performance measures quantified during the CMJ trials when comparing the CT, 50POT, and 65POT treatment conditions. However, 48% of the subjects demonstrated some degree of potentiation at the 30 seconds after completing the 65POT trial, but this percent increase was not statistically significant. From a practical perspective, if the goal of the SPPC is to create a maximization of the potentiation effect, moderately loaded activities may not be the best alternative.
