The Emergence of the Subconscious in Erik Satie's "Parade": The Search for Surrealism in Sound

Rajatanavin, Tanaporn 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis investigates possible connections between the music of Erik Satie (1866-1925) and the later surrealist movement, turning to Parade (1917) in a case study that seeks to understand surrealism in music through the idea of self-exploration, a well-established interpretive approach in studies of surrealism in the visual arts. This thesis seeks to redefine surrealism in music not as a set of concrete musical characteristics, but as a collection of techniques meant to evoke subconscious turbulence by blurring the boundary between the "outside" and "inside," between conscious and subconscious, leading to a new discovery of higher or deeper truth. Satie's music aligns with the psychoanalytic elements of the discourse on surrealism. Psychoanalysis, pioneered by Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) and his followers in the 1890s in Vienna, permeated France around the time of the creation of the work. It inspired early surrealist techniques like automatism, illusory formal structures, collage, and stylistic allusion. This thesis demonstrates that such techniques can be discerned throughout Parade, not only in Satie's music, but also in its scenario, staging, costumes, and choreography. As such, Parade was a foundational work for the surrealist movement, with Satie's music contributing with the other media equally to the emotional and psychological impact of the ballet.

Merchandising the postwar model house at the Parade of Homes

Dodd, Samuel Tommy 2009 August 1900 (has links)
The Parade of Homes began in 1948 as a novel form of sales merchandising and publicity. The model house, on display at the Parade of Homes, was a powerful advertising tool employed by postwar merchant-builders to sell modern design to a new market of informed consumers and second-time homeowners. Using House & Home as a primary source, I contextualize the postwar housing industry and the merchandising efforts of builders. Then, through an examination of the 1955 Parade of Homes in Houston, Texas, I analyze the early Parade of Homes events and the language of domestic modernism that they showcased. / text

It approaches the performance of Parade Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender and examines how this event fits in with the resignification operated in recent years, in central public spaces of Campinas. The dynamics that were established between the actors involved in the construction process Parade revealed the content of these interactions studied from two aspects relevant around central public spaces: (1) the symbolic potential - reinforced by the choice of paths traversed in dialogue with the government, by Parade, who in the pursuit of political legitimacy and public event associated with the historic rescue of the most emblematic public spaces in central and social life of the city, and (2) the nature of these spaces - remeanings as places urban living democratic, affirmation of sexual diversity and social inclusion by increasing legitimization Parade and other activities of the Community of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transvestites and Transsexuals, which has contributed to the urban regeneration of the central spaces of Campinas as public spaces and democratic.

Silva, Alessandro Soares da 28 June 2006 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Alessandro Soares.pdf: 3522090 bytes, checksum: ebd15c792d166219b17c029784c65b55 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2006-06-28 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / This doctoral dissertation in Social Psychology is an intercultural study with a Political Psychology approach about the construction of the collective political consciousness of homosexuals in Brazil, Spain and Portugal beginning with the participation in the LGBT Pride Parade in each country. The LGBT Pride Parade is a mass phenomenon, a psychopolitical strategy of constructing an active citizenship of these subjects. Thus the parade functions as an instrument of bringing back the political memory of homosexuals and as a form of becoming visible in an assimilationist and hetero-normative society adverse to differences. The process of composition of this dissertation implied the conducting of field work in these three countries between 2003-2006 that resulted in 44 interviews of militants of the respective LGBT movements and of militant homosexuals in other movements and political parties. We used open interviews as our methodology and a form of free association of words with the intent of understanding the socio-historical process of each national context in other to conduct the intercultural study. The data show how political participation mediates the construction of the political subject and the collective subject. The festive elements and protest elements in more traditional forms mix in the process of the political construction of the movements themselves that act as an questioning element of the structures established aprioristically according to the interests of the dominant groups / A presente tese de doutorado em Psicologia Social é um estudo intercultural, de abordagem psicopolítica, da construção da consciência política coletiva de homossexuais no Brasil, na Espanha e em Portugal, cujo ponto de partida foi a análise da participação na Parada do Orgulho LGBT de cada um destes países.

Communication chez un oiseau à système socio-sexuel de type lek : étude des signaux acoustiques et visuels pendant la parade des mâles d'outarde houbara Chlamydotis undulata undulata / Communication in a lekking bird : study of visual and acoustic signals produced during male courtship of the North-African houbara bustard, Chlamydotis undulata undulata

Cornec, Clément 28 May 2015 (has links)
Résumé en anglais ;In a context of sexual selection, the communication between individuals is essential to optimize both intra-sexual (competition between male) and inter-sexual (mate choice) processes. This is particularly true in species with lek mating systems, where both processes reach their full expression. The North African Houbara bustard, Chlamydotis undulata undulata, is a lekking bird where courting males aggregate in a so called ‘exploded-lek’, i.e. where aggregation is detectable only when mapped over a large area. During the breeding season, males perform a conspicuous and spectacular courtship including visual and acoustic (booms) signals. Our aim was to decipher the coding-decoding systems of the courtship in this species. We found that males can be individually discriminated on the basis of visual and acoustic parameters. The booms produced during the courtship are also related to males’ characteristics susceptible to reflect their quality. Individuals who produced the lowest frequency booms were those with the greatest weights and performed the highest intensity courtships. Playback experiment shows that the frequency content of the booms was perceived and decoded by males during agonistic interaction, leading to significantly different behavioural responses according to the frequency of the signals played back. Furthermore, several acoustic parameters of the booms are significantly heritable through genetic transmission and these parameters are also related to the level of inbreeding. Finally, we showed that the booms and the acoustic parameters supporting information are particularly well adapted to the transmission of information at long range as required in a long distance communication network constituted by an exploded lek. First, booms are of very low-frequency and propagate up to 640 m. Second, coding-decoding of information relies on sequentially redundant and propagation-resistant features. Third, acoustic signals are combined with visual signalling (multimodality) which may improve the long distance transmission of the information. This study brought evidence that complex information is conveyed by visual and acoustic signals during the courtship of males within a long distance network.

Plante-Hébert, Julien 08 1900 (has links)
The present study deals with the effects of familiarity on speaker identification in the context of voice line-ups. The voice line-up is a paralegal technique, inspired by a visual identification procedure. The voice line-up consists in presenting a number of voices sharing similar acoustic parameters as specified in established procedures. The main objective was to determine if the familiarity of a voice could lead to a high rate of correct identification (> 99 %). Our study is the first to quantify the familiarity criterion linking an identifier and a « target voice ». The quantification was based on four parameters bearing on the degree of contact between individuals: recency, frenquency, duration, and the period during which the contact occurred. Three different voice line-ups were elaborated, each containing 10 voices, including one target voice which was well known by the identifier according to a questionnaire that served to quantify familiarity. Participants (identifiers, n = 44) were selected on the basis of their familiarity with the target voice. The speakers used in the voice line-ups were native speakers of Quebec French and all presented voices had similar fundamental frequencies (to within one semitone). In each line-up we used utterances of 4 different lengths (1, 4, 10, and 18 syll.). The results show that by controlling the familiarity criterion, a correct identification rate of a 100 % is obtained with an exact error probability of p < 1 x 10-12.These rates are superior to current automatic systems of voice identification.

Study on the Impact of Authority Intervene in Strike ─The Case of Exercising the Police Authority

Unknown Date (has links)
