The challenge of shifting paradigms : social workers exercising the ecosystems perspectiveDicker, Janet Linda. 03 1900 (has links)
This dissertation demonstrates and illustrates the challenges involved in the construction of new
realities when Duhl's (1983) idea of using metaphor to apply the ecosystems concept of wholeness
of systems, was exercised in two ways.
Firstly, the study was written in the form of an imaginary conversation between the author in the role
of researcher and an imaginary peer consultant, about making sense of ways of thinking. Through
presenting her observations to other observers, who are actually herself, a new reality was
constructed for the author. Secondly, new individual and group realities were constructed by a group
of social workers in the SANDF, who encountered their own ways of thinking through metaphorical
means such as sculpting.
Recommendations, co-constructed by the author, the imaginary peer consultant and two more
imaginary colleagues, suggest possible uses of the ecosystems perspective in social work including
in settings such as the SANDF. / Social Work / M.A. (Social Science (Mental Health))

Funksionering van 'n missionêre geloofsgemeenskap / Operation of a life-transforming congregationJansen van Vuuren, Dawid Schalk 05 1900 (has links)
The Church no longer has any significant impact on society. An analysis of the Church
morally and statistically confirms this. The situation in South Africa is so critical, that the
Church cannot afford to remain detached and uninvolved.
An explanation for this lack of impact, is that the Church has lost its identity. Its loss of a
sense of call and purpose is argued from the Gospel of Matthew.
In order to rediscover its call, the Church must find a way to evangelise and assimilate
secular people.
A historical analysis reveals that the Church is on the brink of the greatest transformation
in 1600 years. Our generation is called upon to shape the new Church paradigm.
The present structure of the institutional Church nullifies the attempt to instil its moral
values. Parson's sociological theory confirms this and proposes a more effective
paradigm, where the identity of the Church and the importance of relationships are
underscored.
It is only when the Church balances kerugma, leiturgia, koinonia and diakonia that she
effectively impacts on secular men and women.
Three processes need to be held in tension in this evangelical endeavour of the faith
community. These include ministry to the commtinity; an interactional dialogue; and a
process of assimilation and value formation, culminating in a sense of belonging to the
household of faith.
The central thesis holds that a balanced and healthy community of faith, effects a positive
transforming influence and leads to a change of values. / Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / D.Th. (Practical Theology)

Paradigm shift in evangelism : a study of the need for contextualization in the mission of Southern BaptistsJohnson, Ronald Wayne 06 1900 (has links)
This thesis addresses a needed shift of paradigm for mission and
evangelism within the Southern Baptist Convention. The current model
lacks appropriate contextualization in a postmodern world. The proposition of the thesis is that a kingdom model for mission and
evangelism is more appropriate for Southern Baptists' commitment to
mission.
The methodology of this thesis was researching primary and
secondary sources, interviews with persons currently involved within the
mission of Southern Baptists, evaluation of empirical data, and testing
of concepts.
In Chapter One, the validity of this thesis is presented with
the proposition, the limitations, the purpose, the practical nature, and the modus operandi of the thesis stated.
Chapter Two explores the problems of evangelism within the mission of Southern Baptists today. Focus is on empirical statistical evidence and the failure of assumptions, methods, and models currently in practice.
Chapter Three examines the birth of the mission and evangelism
mandate of Southern Baptists and the subsequent development of a
monolithic structure unchanged to the present day.
Chapter Four traces the evolution of evangelistic witness within
the early church and explores the cultural dynamics of the period. / Christian Spirituality, Church History & Missiology / D. Th. (Missiology)

The paradigmatic shift of service organisations : a proposed marketing model for South African university librariesKunneke, Kathleen Joey 06 1900 (has links)
Rapid changes in the economic and world order have made it imperative for university libraries to make a paradigm shift from prestige collection building to a marketing philosophy as their strategic directive. This philosophy would direct university libraries towards decision making around customers' real needs and preferences, aligning organisational competencies and processes with these needs, resulting in more effective service delivery.
Changes in the world order, economics and marketing as a philosophy are presented on a time line, revealing the influence developments in technology and the Internet have brought about. Various views on the influence of these changes in the world order are presented.
Marketing in service organisations is encapsulated in a service marketing triangle. Competitive advantage for the university library should be achieved if the internal processes of the library are analysed in the context of a value chain. A proposed marketing model has been presented to direct strategic thinking in the university library. / Information Science / M. Inf.

Antwoorde kwalifiseer as
- staatsbou, dikwels verkeerdelik voorgehou as nasiebou;
demokrasie omvorm is;
opposisie vrywaar;
is.
The basic thesis emanating from this research holds that scientific enterprises within certain fields
of the legal science are undertaken in pursuance of a tacit statist paradigm which consistently
preserve the political status quo. The territorial state is both the keystone of the existing political
order and the master concept of the statist paradigm. Scientific activity according to this paradigm
seeks to protect the territorial state and functions as a defensive conservative political project.
The scientific relevance of questions and answers is determined by the exigencies of the existing
order composed of territorial states. Answers are viewed as scientifically authentic only if they are
compatible with the interests of the prevailing territorial state and when they do not pose a threat
of disruption to the existing statist status quo. Intellectual activity that does not affirm the statist
predicated status quo and which poses the risk of disruption of the this order would seldom qualify
as scientific in terms of this paradigm.
This study examines the historical establishment of the statist paradigm and debunks the main pillars
of the paradigm. The foremost products of scientific activity in accordance with the statist paradigm
are then analyzed. These products invariably safeguard the statist order and also succeed in
domesticating the challengers of the statist order and placing them in the service of this order.
The most outstanding developments of the scientific endeavour in pursuance of the statist paradigm
are analyzed, which are:
- state building, often inaccurately portrayed as nation building;
-democracy which, subjected to the discipline of the statist paradigm, had been transformed
into statist democracy;
- human rights which cultivate civic dependence upon the state, thus safeguarding the state
against opposition;
-the crime ofhigh treason and the international law concept of self-determination which was transfigured by the statist paradigm into a state serving statist self-determination.
The statist paradigm is however placed under increasing tension and there is a possibility of a
revolutionary reappraisal of several key concepts which the statist paradigm has kept in captivity and
which have been domesticated and placed in the service of the statist status quo. By releasing these
revolutionary concepts, the way to a new politocracy, beyond the statist order, may be paved. / Jurisprudence / LL.D.

Hypnotic analgesia in obstetrics : an ecosystemic descriptionMarkman, Andrea 02 1900 (has links)
In this study, hypnotic analgesia in obstetrics is explained in terms of ecosystemic
thinking, as opposed to traditional conceptualisations of hypnosis. Five case studies
were used. Each case is described in detail, as well as the therapeutic rationale behind
each case, in order to present the reader with an understanding for the thinking behind
the doing of ecosystemic hypnotherapy. The study utilises a new paradigm approach
to research which is explained and is in keeping with ecosystemic epistemology. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Framework to assist organisations with information technology adoption governanceJokonya, Osden 03 1900 (has links)
The evidence from the literature suggests that Information Technology adoption (IT) governance in organisations is still a challenge. The diversity of application and the ever-increasing use of IT results in making decisions on IT adoption a major challenge for organisations. The decision about using a particular technology from an organisational perspective is problematic since individual users have different worldviews. The implicit assumption in IT adoption literature is that stakeholders always reach consensus during IT adoption decision making in organisations.
This study explored the existing models and frameworks in order to develop a preliminary improved IT adoption governance framework. This study used a case study sequential explanatory mixed methods research approach to validate the preliminary IT adoption governance framework. The first validation phase of the framework was done using a quantitative approach followed by the second validation phase based on qualitative interviews. The last validation was done after integrating the quantitative and qualitative results to produce the refined framework.
The results suggest that the developed framework may improve IT adoption governance in organisations. The results showed that the framework components facilitate IT adoption governance in organisations. The results also suggest that the components have an association with each other except for the Technology Acceptance Model component. The results indicate that stakeholder participation and hard systems thinking components have a strong predictive impact on IT governance framework component perception in organisations.
The study results suggest that IT adoption decision makers need to balance different stakeholders’ demands during IT adoption decision making in organisations. The framework helps in that regard by reconciling different stakeholders’ demands through collective IT adoption decision making. The strength of the framework is its integration of theories from various disciplines in understanding stakeholder expectations. On that basis the framework is in a better position to offer more insight into understanding challenges of IT adoption decision making than existing frameworks and models. The framework offers a potentially valuable basis for future research in IT adoption decision making in organisations. The results suggest that the framework may facilitate IT adoption in organisations using different components. / Information Science / D. Litt. et Phil. (Information systems)

Behind training : differentiation of self of a psychotherapy traineeVan der Merwe, Sasja 02 October 2013 (has links)
Psychotherapy is an interpersonal encounter where a therapist collaborates with
clients to facilitate a healing process. Due to the personal nature of the therapeutic encounter,
the therapist requires the necessary skills and knowledge, as well as a differentiated sense of
self. The importance of supporting the psychotherapy trainee’s own differentiation process
seemed to have been neglected in research in recent years. In South Africa there has recently
been increasing pressure to select larger groups of trainees which has the risk that the tending
to differentiation would further be neglected. The purpose of this research study is to reemphasise
the importance of differentiation of self of the psychotherapy trainee by examining
my own process of differentiation during my psychotherapy training. This study introduces
the reader to these concepts and explores psychotherapy training in general and the Unisa
training method specifically. The research design of this study is autoethnography which falls
in the realm of social constructionism and the coding method is Thematic Data Analysis. The
research findings as reflected in the two global themes namely individuation; and gaining
and strengthening authentic relationships, seem to accurately reflect the process of
differentiation. The specific training method of the Unisa training team in combination with
the way in which I engaged with this process seemed important for the facilitation of this
process of differentiation. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Alien Places in Late Soviet Science Fiction : The "Unexpected Encounters" of Arkady and Boris Strugatsky as Novels and FilmsCederlöf, Henriette January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation deals with how science fiction reflects the shift in cultural paradigms that occurred in the Soviet Union between the 1960s and the 1970s. Interest was displaced from the rational to the irrational, from a scientific-technologically oriented optimism about the future to art, religion, philosophy and metaphysics. Concomitant with this shift in interests was a shift from the future to an elsewhere or, reformulated in exclusively spatial terms, from utopia to heterotopia. The dissertation consists of an analysis of three novels by the Strugatsky brothers (Arkady, 1925-1991 and Boris 1933-2012): Inspector Glebsky’s Puzzle (Otel’ U pogibšego al’pinista, 1970), The Kid (Malyš, 1971) and Roadside Picnic (Piknik na obočine, 1972) and two films Dead Mountaineer’s Hotel (Hukkunud alpinisti hotell/ Otel’ U pogibšego al’pinista, Kromanov, 1979) and Stalker (Tarkovsky, 1980). The three novels, allegedly treatments of the theme of contact with an extraterrestrial intelligence, were intended to be published in one volume with the title Unexpected Encounters. The films are based on two of the novels. In the novels an earlier Marxist utopia has given way to a considerably more ambiguous heterotopia, largely envisioned as versions of the West. An indication of how the authors here seem to look back towards history rather than forward towards the future is to be found in the persistent strain of literary Gothic that runs through the novels. This particular trait resurfaces in the films as well. The films reflect how tendencies only discernable in the novels have developed throughout the decade, such as the budding Soviet consumer culture and the religious sensibilities of the artistic community.
