The founding documents for a new, democratic South Africa adopted a more inclusive and people-driven approach to innovation. The literature and policy analysis reveals a „shift‟ away from this approach to a more market-driven, exclusivist approach to innovation. R&D (research and development) and technology-driven innovation had been institutionalised at the expense of social, cultural and indigenous innovations.
This „shift‟ limits the potential of innovation to benefit a wider segment of society. The absence of a „model‟ of innovation that exploits the strengths of all forms of innovation runs the risk of defeating the normative intentions of the founding innovation policies of the new, post-Apartheid and democratic South Africa. The OECD, from which South Africa „inherited‟ its notion of innovation, acknowledges the shortcomings of the technological innovation and calls for a conceptual framework that will address the shortcomings of the dominant, exclusivist notion of innovation.
This inquiry was conducted to investigate an appropriate conceptual framework of innovation that would contribute towards achieving normative policy intentions of post-Apartheid South Africa. It employed a grounded theory design that used semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, document analysis, observations and cooperative inquiry.
The data analysed suggest the following propositions:
1. Thesis 1: Innovation is constrained by the dominant science and technology paradigm.
2. Thesis 2: Inclusive and integrative innovation cannot exist within an exclusivist innovation paradigm.
3. Thesis 3: Transforming an exclusivist paradigm into an inclusivist paradigm requires change at constitutive level and not just at regulatory level.4. Thesis 4: Synthesising an inclusive and integrative innovation requires creativity, open dialogue and imagination.
Against the above propositions, this thesis recommends a conceptual framework that is underpinned by an inclusive and integrative paradigm. Such a framework proposes transformative actions that have potential to achieve normative policy intentions of post-Apartheid South Africa.
Further research into a constitutive design for an inclusive and integrative innovation policies and practices is recommended. / Educational Studies / D. Ed. (Philosophy of Education)

In this research study, the correlation between culture and gospel is investigated by examining changes in the interpretation of the cross of Christ from Early Christianity up to present times, using the method of paradigmatic analysis designed by David J. Bosch. Following the concept of the Missio Dei within mission theology, this study aims to find a perspective on the event of the cross which is relevant for today's practice. With reference to the topics of cultural context, sin, sacrifice, vicariousness, cross and mission, this study shows that in every paradigm the diverse perspectives of the interpretation of Jesus' death were explicable and helpful within their relevant contexts. It can also be seen that in its objectives, message and practice, mission correlates with the respective motifs prevalent at the time. In conclusion, after determining the proper place of the results within the concept of Missio Dei in mission theology, the study examines the relevance of these results for the Missio Christi, in order to offer a contribution to the debate and a potential perspective for explaining the significance of Jesus' death in the current German-speaking cultural context. / Christian Spirituality, Church History & Missiology / M. The integration of modern science and indigenous knowledge systems in the science education curriculum for South African schools represents social justice for the majority of South Africans as they determine the knowledge necessary for themselves and for future generations in the new South Africa.
An exploratory research reveals tension and a dichotomous relationship between modern science and IKS, caused by false hierarchies that are influenced by factors such as colonialism, capitalism and modernisation to the exclusion of the core values held by indigenous people in their relationship with nature.
The thesis demonstrates that the integration requires an epistemology that puts humanity first and a framework that accommodates both ways of knowing. The structure of an education system and its curricula reflects the influence of a specific
paradigm. Since the onset of colonial rule and apartheid in South Africa about
everything in the South African society, including the education system and curricular
issues in particular, have been shaped in accordance with the macro paradigm: the
modern Western paradigm.
The emergence of a new paradigm: the postmodern paradigm, created the possibility
of a new order of thinking which influenced all societal domains and aspects and
propelled the society into the new millennium. Since 1994 a new approach forms the
corner stone of all the new South African policy documents on education. It is for this
reason that the issue of an arts education curriculum is investigated from a
paradigmatic point of view with reference to the modern, the postmodern and the
African paradigms.
Various components, roles and dynamics of educational curricula cast in the modern
paradigm framework are compared with characteristics of their counterparts in the
postmodern paradigm framework, and how they can influence the design of curricula,
especially arts education. The contribution of an African paradigmatic perspective is
accounted for.
A new approach to curriculum development based on the ideals of a learner-centred
education approach, an outcomes-based education approach and the integration of
subjects into specific learning areas has officially been adopted as the approach for
transforming education and curricular issues, resulting in the present Curriculum 2005.
Within the context of the Arts and Culture learning area of this Curriculum, the study
concentrates on and emphasises the integration of the four art forms of dance, drama,
music and visual art in order to overcome the legacy of fragmentation of a curriculum.
The study culminates in a proposed integrated arts education outline for curriculum
development that defines the rationale and vision for South African arts education. The
researcher contends that there is sufficient scope for arts education to contribute its
unique aesthetic values to the new national curriculum in South Africa and that
integration of these art forms does not in any way diminish the unique character of

Francis Schaeffer presented a Christian world and life-view encompassing the totality of
reality as an alternative to a fragmented view of reality. Refinements of dualism are
examined from within a theological context giving substance to his understanding of
modern world and life-view trends. Dualisms may be traced from the dawn of history of
religion. It was Thomas Aquinas who profoundly influenced Western thought into a
secular compartment through a synthesis of Christian dogma with Aristotelian
presuppositions. The reign of the sacred diminished and a predominantly secular
pathway may be traced through disciplines such as philosophy, arts, science and
theology. This dissertation suggests that a dualistic analysis of reality is limited in its
application. A model is suggested which traces all of reality to its ultimate source, God.

The growth of the Church in Africa, namely at numerical level, is tremendous. However, we notice that her impact on society and public life is not so visible as the growth is, since Christian values are embodied by Christians. Yet, the Church has huge human resources, pastors, missionaries, lay leaders and theologians. The challenge for the Church in Africa is to incarnate and inculturate these values and the living message of the Gospel. In this thesis we question the co-operation between the Church and mission agencies, between native pastors and western missionaries. We notice that since 150 years, there has been a huge gap between these two entities. This is due to the fact that Theology and Missiology look like two lines that never meet. Die salutogenese paradigma het sy ontstaan en ontwikkeling aan verskeie navorsingsperspektiewe te danke. Daar is reeds op internasionale gebied breedvoerig navorsing oor hierdie paradigma gedoen. In die Suid-Afrika is die navorsing van Strumpfer en Wissing goed bekend. In hierdie navorsing is daar deur middel van faktorontleding gepoog om die onderliggende dimensies van die konstrukte gevoel van koherensie en geharde persoonlikheid bloot te le. Daar is onderskeidelik twee duidelike faktore vir beide konstrukte bepaal. Die faktore op die Lewensorientasievraelys (OLQ) het noue ooreenstemming getoon met die komponente betekenisvolheid en
hanteerbaarheid (OLQ1 ), en verstaanbaarheid (OLQ2) soos deur Antonovsky (1987) bespreek. Die faktore op die "Personal Views Survey" (PVS) het ooreenstemming getoon met die komponente verbintenis en beheer (PVS1) en uitdaging (PVS2), soos deur Kobasa (1979) daargestel. Hierdie navorsingsresultate toon verder dat ouderdom wel die mate van gevoel van koherensie wat 'n individu mag ervaar, kan be"invloed. Alhoewel geslag in 'n mindere mate 'n invloed op die mate van gevoel van koherensie getoon het, behoort geslag (in perspektief van die totale steekproef beskou) nie 'n bepalende invloed uit te oefen nie. In terme van die mate van geharde
persoonlikheid wat 'n individu mag ervaar, het ouderdom en geslag geen invloed getoon nie. has already been done on this paradigm on a wide sphere. The research of Strumpfer and Wissing is well known in South Africa. In this area of research an attempt is made through the analysis of factors to expose the underlying dimensions of the construct sense of coherence and the construct hardy personality. Two certain factors for both constructs have been indicated. The factors influencing the Orientation to Life Questionnaire indicated a close resemblance with the components of meaningfulness and manageability (OLQ1), and comprehensibility (OLQ2), discussed by Antonovsky (1987). The factors of the Personal Views Survey (PVS) demonstrated a similarity with the components commitment and control (PVS 1) and challenge (PVS2), as stated
by Kobasa (1979). The results of this research demonstrates that age may well influence the measure of the sense of coherence which an individual may experience. Although gender indicated a minor measure of influence on the degree of sense of coherence, gender should not (in perspective of this research findings) have

This is a postmodernist dissertation contextualised within the new
epistemology.
The dissertation's descriptive methodology mirrors a personal journey
from intrapsychic to ecosystemic psychology which operates within the
domain of language and narrative discourse. As such it is founded on the
principles of ecosystemic rather than Newtonian thinking.
A conversation between various participants constructs the dissertatioi1
through polyphony and academic dialogue. This is then deconstructed through
the use of metalogue thereby allowing the dissertation to operate
simultaneously on a number of different levels.
As it is a postmodernist text, the structure is in a sense an 'anti-structure'
in that it is indirect while it is still acknowledged as a construction. In this
way it is constructed and deconstructed in terms of its own premises.
Expectations in terms of conventional dissertation formulae are challenged
