Karlsson, Fanny, Norén, Olle January 2023 (has links)

Feasibility, Efficiency, and Robustness of Secure Computation

Hai H Nguyen (14206922) 02 December 2022 (has links)
<p>Secure computation allows mutually distrusting parties to compute over private data. Such collaborations have widespread applications in social, scientific, commercial, and security domains. However, the overhead of achieving security is a major bottleneck to the adoption of such technologies. In this context, this thesis aims to design the most secure protocol within budgeted computational or network resources by mathematically formulating it as an optimization problem. </p> <p>With the rise in CPU power and cheap RAM, the offline-online model for secure computation has become the prominent model for real-world security systems. This thesis investigates the above-mentioned optimization problem in the information-theoretic offline-online model. In particular, this thesis presents the following selected sample of our research in greater detail. </p> <p>Round and Communication Complexity: Chor-Kushilevitz-Beaver characterized the round and communication complexity of secure two-party computation. Since then, the case of functions with randomized output remained unexplored. We proved the decidability of determining these complexities. Next, if such a protocol exists, we construct the optimal protocol; otherwise, we present an obstruction to achieving security. </p> <p>Rate and Capacity of secure computation: The efficiency of converting the offline samples into secure computation during the online phase is essential. However, investigating this ``production rate'' for general secure computations seems analytically intractable. Towards this objective, we introduce a new model of secure computation -- one without any communication -- that has several practical applications. We lay the mathematical foundations of formulating rate and capacity questions in this framework. Our research identifies the first tight rate and capacity results (a la Shannon) in secure computation. </p> <p>Reverse multiplication embedding: We identify a new problem in algebraic complexity theory that unifies several efficiency objectives in cryptography. Reverse multiplication embedding seeks to implement as many (base field) multiplications as possible using one extension field multiplication. We present optimal construction using algebraic function fields. This embedding has subsequently led to efficient improvement of secure computation, homomorphic encryption, proof systems, and leakage-resilient cryptography. </p> <p>Characterizing the robustness to side-channel attacks: Side-channel attacks present a significant threat to the offline phase. We introduce the cryptographic analog of common information to characterize the offline phase's robustness quantitatively. We build a framework for security and attack analysis. In the context of robust threshold cryptography, we present a state-of-the-art attack, threat assessment, and security fix for Shamir's secret-sharing. </p> <p><br></p>

United States Use of Force against Terrorism and the Threat of Terrorism: An Analysis of the Past Four U.S. Presidents¿ Use of Force to Combat International Terrorism.

Starr-Deelen, Donna G. January 2012 (has links)
The thesis analyzes how the administrations of Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush used force in response to incidents of international terrorism. Key players in each administration and whether they advocated a law enforcement approach or a war paradigm approach to counterterrorism are examined. In addition, Koh¿s pattern of executive initiative, congressional acquiescence, and judicial tolerance forms a theoretical lens through which to compare and contrast administrations. An assessment of the role of Congress in making the administrations¿ counterterrorism policies confirms the vitality of this pattern, and suggests future administrations will adhere to it. During the George W. Bush administration, Koh¿s pattern of executive initiative (led by personalities like Vice President Cheney), congressional acquiescence, and judicial tolerance combined with the 9/11 tragedy and pervasive fears of another attack to create a ¿perfect storm¿ known as the ¿war on terror¿. The research also analyzes to what extent the four administrations were constrained by international legal norms on the use of force, i.e. articles 2(4) and 51 of the UN Charter. On the domestic side, the thesis analyzes the extent to which American legal norms on the use of force constrained the administrations. Although the lack of compelling constraints on the use of force is present in all four administrations, the thesis indicates that the George W. Bush administration embodied an extreme example of this trend.

Paradigm Shift from Vague Legal Contracts to Blockchain-Based Smart Contracts

Upadhyay, Kritagya Raj 07 1900 (has links)
In this dissertation, we address the problem of vagueness in traditional legal contracts by presenting novel methodologies that aid in the paradigm shift from traditional legal contracts to smart contracts. We discuss key enabling technologies that assist in converting the traditional natural language legal contract, which is full of vague words, phrases, and sentences to the blockchain-based precise smart contract, including metrics evaluation during our conversion experiment. To address the challenge of this contract-transformation process, we propose four novel proof-of-concept approaches that take vagueness and different possible interpretations into significant consideration, where we experiment with popular vendors' existing vague legal contracts. We show through experiments that our proposed methodologies are able to study the degree of vagueness in every interpretation and demonstrate which vendor's translated-smart contract can be more accurate, optimized, and have a lesser degree of vagueness. We also incorporated the method of fuzzy logic inside the blockchain-based smart contract, to successfully model the semantics of linguistic expressions. Our experiments and results show that the smart contract with the higher degrees of truth can be very complex technically but more accurate at the same time. By using fuzzy logic inside a smart contract, it becomes easier to solve the problem of contractual ambiguities as well as expedite the process of claiming compensation when implemented in a blockchain-based smart contract.

The Role of Visual and Auditory Information in the Perception of Complex Skills in Gymnastics

Veit, Frederike 17 July 2023 (has links)
The perception of our environment and processing situation- or task-relevant information guides us through our everyday life. For example, in sports, the perception of situation-relevant information can be crucial for success or defeat. Different studies show that auditory and visual information interacts in the perception of complex stimuli (Allerdissen et al., 2017; Ca˜nal-Bruland et al., 2018). Furthermore, the combination of auditory and visual stimuli seems to lead to an increase in the precision of perception (Effenberg, 2005). So far, many studies have investigated the influence of (motor) experiences on the perception and evaluation of complex skills (Heinen et al., 2012; Pizzera & Raab, 2012). This dissertation investigates the role of visual and auditory information in the perception, assessment, and evaluation of complex gymnastic skills. Furthermore, it attempts to approach the role of auditory and visual information in motor control of complex skills. The publication-based dissertation includes five different studies. The first two studies (chapters four and five) deal with expert-novice comparisons regarding the quality of movement perception in gymnastics under three different conditions (audiovisual, visual, and auditory). Here, a three-part acrobatic element sequence (round-off, followed by a back handspring and straight back somersault) on the floor was chosen as the object of investigation. Based on the results of the first study, the second investigation takes up the three-part acrobatic series again. The focus here is on the auditory perception of the natural movement sounds through manipulations. The results of the second study lay the foundation for subsequent investigations. The third study investigated whether and to what extent auditory and visual information processing affect the execution of complex skills in trampoline gymnastics. The fourth study takes up the acrobatic series again. Here, music is examined as a possible influencing factor that can play an essential role in female gymnastics on the floor. The fifth and final study attempts to replicate the results of the fourth study for another component of floor routines in female gymnastics female (gymnastic series). Within the dissertation project studies, previous study results regarding the perception of complex skills could be confirmed for the field of gymnastics. On the one hand, it could be shown that more accurate estimations of complex skills are made when visual and auditory information is available and that current gymnasts use auditory information differently than persons without previous experience and persons with visual experience. On the other hand, it could be shown within a synchronization task in trampoline gymnastics that the availability of information affects the speed of movement regulation. It could also be observed that music adapted to the speed of movement leads to higher scores in evaluating the shown gymnastics skills.:Versicherung I List of Publications II Summary III Zusammenfassung IV 1 Introduction 2 Theoretical Background 2.1 Motion Perception in Gymnastics 2.2 Sensory Contributions to Motion Perception 2.3 Neurophysiological Processes in Motion Perception 2.4 Behavioral and Cognitive Approaches to Motion Perception 2.5 Summary 3 Research Program 4 Publication I - The Role of Visual and Auditory Information in the Observation and Evaluation of Complex Skills in Gymnastics 5 Publication II - How does Auditory Information Influence Observers’ Perception during the Evaluation of Complex Skills? 6 Publication III (accepted) - The Role of Auditory and Visual Information in Interpersonal Coordination in Trampoline Gymnastics 7 Publication IV - Does Jumping to the Beat Result in Better Ratings from Gymnastics Experts? I List of Publications II Summary III Zusammenfassung IV 1 Introduction 2 Theoretical Background 2.1 Motion Perception in Gymnastics 2.2 Sensory Contributions to Motion Perception 2.3 Neurophysiological Processes in Motion Perception 2.4 Behavioral and Cognitive Approaches to Motion Perception 2.5 Summary 3 Research Program 4 Publication I - The Role of Visual and Auditory Information in the Observation and Evaluation of Complex Skills in Gymnastics 5 Publication II - How does Auditory Information Influence Observers’ Perception during the Evaluation of Complex Skills? 6 Publication III (accepted) - The Role of Auditory and Visual Information in Interpersonal Coordination in Trampoline Gymnastics 7 Publication IV - Does Jumping to the Beat Result in Better Ratings from Gymnastics Experts? 8 Publication V - The Influence of Music on Judges’ Evaluation of Complex Skills in Gymnastics 9 General Discussion 9.1 Theoretical Discussion 9.2 Methodological Discussion 9.3 Practical Implications 10 Conclusions References Appendix

Persson, Henrik, Nilsson, Andreas January 2010 (has links)
Two of the fundamental paradigms within computer science are object oriented programming and relational databases. A combination of an object oriented application with the persistence and functionality provided by relational databases is a further development of one’s knowledge within these areas. The combination of the two aforementioned paradigms will yield at least one problem, which occurs because in a database data is stored in tables whereas an object oriented application stores data in objects. This problem is called the object/relational paradigm mismatch. Because of this problem the connection between the paradigms must be handled by some kind of framework. In our report we investigate two of the frameworks which handle the connection between the paradigms. Specifically in our study we will focus on the quality attribute usability of the two frameworks and conduct a comparison between these two. The frameworks we investigate are called Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) and Hibernate. Both of these tools are created for the object oriented programming language Java.

Innovating the learning process in higher education throughthe integration of theory and practice in partnership with Industry and Students

Anderson Mlabwa, Daniel, Hajipour, Farhang January 2022 (has links)
The VUCA (which stands for volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity) conditions have overshadowed the national and global higher education systems, and social and economic systems are increasingly becoming dependent on knowledge and innovations. There is a call for the global higher education systems to attain a new set of quality standards (Waller et al., 2019). Traditional teaching methodologies and outdated pedagogical frameworks lowered motivation and engagement in the learning processes and fueled the rising of the gap between theory and practice (Ferns, Rowe and Zegwaard, 2021; Hays, 2014). Work Integrated Learning is a pedagogical framework that holds tremendous potential for bridging this gap through up to date alternative means while reinforcing a sustainable engagement between industry, students and academia (Hays, 2014). This study was investigating the cause of contemporary challenges and the impact of emerging VUCA conditions in the ecosystem of students, academia, and industry. In the following, the main features and potential utilities of work-integrated learning (WIL) as a framework for presenting interactive learning innovations were explored. Moreover, the paper was also looking at the concept of the knowledge economy as a growth paradigm under the influence of the emerging internet tools which pave the doors for conducting simulated or virtual work-integrated learning by changing the ways of knowledge creation and its delivery. The primary research is based on a quantitative survey shared with a sample space of 35 KTH masters students, who were purposively selected due to, firstly their remote education experience, and secondly their participation in the learning through a scenario-based gamified online course. The research aims to identify the main areas that VUCA threatening higher education while assessing the utility of work-integrated learning to bridge the theory and practice gap and form a sustainable partnership between industry, students, and academia.  This study indicated the learning process in the higher education systems needs to be innovated by replacing the traditional teaching methods with more interactive alternative means. Hence, learning transformation per se can be considered as a major stimulus factor increating turbulence and VUCA conditions which affect student life, the higher education systems and the economic system as a whole. Our findings confirm students' high level of satisfaction in the experience of learning throughthe scenario-based simulated game, students experienced more engagement and collaborationwhile acquiring knowledge and skills in a more practical way. They also expressed a positive adaptive behaviour toward increasing the deployment of these alternative learning methods. Despite unfulfilled students' expectations with respect to soft skills developement and the quality of remote learning experiences, most of these issues are falling within the scope of pedagogical capabilities and collaborative features of work-integrated learning and are resolvable through systematical deployment and quality supervision of innovative learnings under these pedagogical frameworks.
