The perception and treatment of mental illness by selected Pentecostal pastors in Polokwane : towards an intervention

Thesis (Ph.D. (Psychology)) -- University of Limpopo, 2022. / Mental illness is a high burden of disease especially in Low- and Medium-Income Countries (LMICs) like South Africa. In many LMICs, there is a paucity of Mental Health Professionals (MHCPs). As a result, people with mental illness call their faith healers or religious/spiritual leaders (pastors in this study) when experiencing mental health problems. Pastors are more accessible, share the same religious/spiritual beliefs about mental illness with their congregants and often provide religious/spiritual solutions to those who consult with them. Thus, they are often preferred over MHCPs. However, pastors are rarely involved as partners in community based mental health programs. While mental illness is mainly clinically diagnosed and recognised by MHCPs using the DSM-5 and ICD-10 codes, less is known in South Africa with regards to the views of pastors with regards to their notions of what mental illness is. Thus, it may be complex for Pentecostal pastors to clearly distinguish between spirit possession and mental illness as much as it is complex for MHCPs who struggle with accommodating their patients’ religious/spiritual beliefs. Religious/spiritual beliefs are significant in many Africans seeking mental health recovery. However, less has been explored in South Africa in the area of religion/spirituality and its relevance in the practice of clinical psychology. Western based psychotherapeutic methods of intervention which exclude the religious/spiritual domain of African clients continue to dominate the practise of psychology in Africa. Given the above, this study aimed to explore and understand selected Pentecostal pastors’ perception and treatment of mental illness. The research objectives were, namely: (1) to establish the notions held by Pentecostal pastors’ regarding what mental illness is (2) to establish Pentecostal pastors’ perception of what causes mental illness; (3) to determine Pentecostal pastors’ perceptions of how and by whom mental illness can be recognised, diagnosed, treated and managed; (4) To determine Pentecostal pastors’ views regarding their own roles in the management of mental illness; and (5) To canvass and describe Pentecostal pastors’ perceptions about collaboration for purposes of an intervention programme aimed at providing a holistic care and treatment of religious/spiritual patients. The study was qualitative, and the exploratory research approach was adopted. The research was informed by the Bio-Psycho-Social-Spiritual (BPSS) model. Purposive sampling was used to select nineteen (19) participants. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted. Data were analysed using Thematic Analysis (TA). The following six major themes emerged from the analysed data: (i) Notions of mental illness; (ii) Causes of mental illness;(iii) Recognition and diagnosis of mental illness (iv) Notions on the treatment and management of mental illness; (v) Perceived roles in the treatment and management of mental illness; (vi) Views regarding collaboration with MHCPs. The participants held a multifactorial view of mental illness. They were limited in their understanding of mental illness and perceived it mainly to be madness (psychosis). The participants’ perception of mental illness was influenced by their theological (Pentecostal) as well as their cultural backgrounds (Black Africans). The participants indicated that they lacked training in mental health issues. As such, they were not opposed to collaborating with MHCPs. They mentioned that their roles included counselling, prayer, support, and referral. This study also discovered that Pentecostal pastors upheld three treatment approaches of mental illness namely: The Full-Collaborative Approach; The Partial-Collaborative Approach and the Non-Collaborative Approach. Este trabalho tem como objetivos facilitar a leitura da obra de Sóror Maria do Céu e contribuir para a divulgação desta escritora barroca, que possui uma vasta produção literária no século XVIII mas que permance grandemente desconhecida nos círculos literários e académicos do presente século. A introdução explora o aspecto da viagem alegórica da alma, representada por personagens de uma narrativa e tendo como protagonista uma personagem feminina -- a Peregrina. Esta embarca numa viagem à procura de uma vida eterna feliz e recompensadora, No entanto durante a sua viagem, depara-se com um conjunto de desafios que precisa ultrapassar para atingir a vida eterna. Apresentamos alguns dados históricos e socioculturais de Portugal no século XVII e XVIII e oferecemos uma pequena biografia da autora, Maria do Céu. Também está incluída uma explicação sucinta sobre o estilo artístico de escolha, ou seja, os elementos literários que constituem esta novela alegórica, assim como um resumo dos catorze capítulos de Enganos do bosque, desenganos do Rio. Durante a análise da obra de Maria do Céu, revelamos as caraterísticas principais dos personagens e consideramos Enganos do bosque, desenganos do Rio juntamente com outras duas obras: Pilgrim's Progress, do escritor inglês John Bunyan e História do Predestinado Peregrino e seu irmão Precito, do escritor português Alexandre de Gusmão. Deste modo expomos as semelhanças e diferenças entre as viagens peregrinas dos protagonistas destas obras e realçamos os objetivos originais da escritora feminina e que são distintos dos autores masculinos: através da personagem Peregrina, Maria do Céu narra o aperfeiçoamento da alma até ao ponto de união mística com o pastor do bosque, ou seja, união da alma com o seu criador, Jesus Cristo. Por fim, antes da edição da novela alegórica de Maria do Céu, oferecemos uma lista de alterações gramaticais efetuadas nesta edição, e que têm como objetivo ajudar o leitor moderno na compreensão desta obra.

A systematic theological investigation of the marks of the pastor according to contemporary baptist theology in South African and German contexts

Baptists regard ecclesiology as the field where they provide a unique contribution to Christian theology and practice. Yet, the Baptist Principles that summarize the distinctive beliefs of Baptists have not much to say about the position and role of the Baptist pastor. Instead, they emphasize the equality of all church members and their individual rights to participate and decide in church matters. This thesis investigates the theology of ministry from contemporary Baptist sources in South African and German contexts. The author takes from his own experience of ministry in both countries, but researches literature also from a wider range of backgrounds. The first part provides a discussion of Baptist ecclesiology with a view to the topic of ministry. The Baptist Principles are scrutinized with specific focus on the Principles of the priesthood of all believers and of congregational church government. They allow for a variety of interpretations, but on the whole limit the position of the pastor rather than positively describing it. The same is true for the German Baptists' creedal document Rechenschaft vom Glauben. The author of this thesis sees his particular contribution to the topic in providing a positive characterization of the Baptist pastor. He does so in the second part where he presents four pairs of marks of the pastor. "Called and Gifted" describes the divine origin of ministry. Both marks are not exclusive to pastors, but also have a general meaning that includes all church members. "Ordained and Trained" is summarized as a secondary category, which shows the human institutions and prerequisites for ministry. "Leader and Servant" is a seeming contradiction in terms, but has become idiomatic as a combined term to describe the Christian way of leadership, as proclaimed by Jesus. "Preacher and Shepherd" are both synonyms for the pastor. They emphasize different aspects of ministry, but can also be interpreted as contrasting in focus. In his conclusion, the author relates the marks of the pastor to the Baptist Principles. In die praktyk ontvang kinders egter nie altyd die sorg waarop hulle geregtig is nie. Een van die faktore waarom dit nie altyd gebeur nie, is omdat daar gebruik gemaak word van 'n intervensie metode wat steun op verbale kommuniekasievaardighede. Die ses stappe van intervensienavorsing is gebruik om 'n pastorale praktykmodel in die vorm van 'n kursus te ontwikkel. Die aanvanklike praktykmodel is in gevallestudies getoets en later verfyn. Die klem van hierdie praktykmodel is die gebruik van spel as modus van intervensie vanuit 'n Gestalt benadering. Die kursus sal pastors en geestelike werkers in staat stel om effektief vir kinders te sorg. Die hoofkonsepte van die navorsing vorm die vertrekpunte van die kursus saam met praktiese oefeninge in spelterapietegnieke. / Many children in South-Africa are admitted in the Intensive Care Unit after a traumatic event. The Church is called to care for these children in the form of pastoral care. In practise children are often neglected and do not receive the care that they are entiteld to. One of the main reasons is because pastors and religious workers use an intervention method that depends mainly on the verbal skills of the child. The six steps of intervention research was used to develop a pastoral model in the form of course. The innitial intervention model was tested in case studies and refined. The focus of this model is to use play as a mode of intervention from a Gestalt approach. The course will enable pastors and religious workers to care for children more effectively. German text / Diese Masterarbeit untersucht die mit der Predigtarbeit verbundene Stressbewältigung evangelischer Gemeindepfarrer der Region Karlsruhe (Deutschland). Zuerst werden an Hand der Literatur Möglichkeiten der Stressbewältigung in Forschung und Beratung sowie im Pfarrberuf reflektiert. Es folgt die Erfassung der empirischen Situation mit Hilfe teilstrukturierter Interviews und deren Bewertung in Anlehnung an Mayrings Qualitativer Inhaltsanalyse. Abschließend werden aus der theoretischen Reflexion und der empirischen Forschung konkrete Handlungsempfehlungen abgeleitet. Im Zentrum der Untersuchung steht die persönliche Praxis der Stressbewältigung im Rahmen der Predigtvorbereitung und des Predigtvortrages, wobei die Einbindung des geistlichen Lebens des Pfarrers interessiert. Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchung geben Anlass, insgesamt von einer stressreduzierenden Wirkung der Predigtarbeit auszugehen. Die berufsbedingt meditative Beschäftigung mit dem Predigttext fördert die Spiritualität. In Kombination mit autodidaktisch erworbenen Stressbewältigungskompetenzen ergibt sich daraus ein erstaunlich effektives Stressmanagement. The process of configuration of the modern teacher in the pedagogical treatise from XVI and XVII centuries was the object of this research. The purpose is show that for the textual context of production of this treatises, as well the historical circumstances, in that these treatises comes from, this texts had configured the modern teacher as teacher-preacher and as a priest-teacher. The development of argumentation was based on ideas of contemporary educational theoreticals that affirm that the modern scholarization don´t have institutional ancienty, and that the study of pedagogicals discourses made in the XVI and XVII centuries allow the understand the elements that shaped to the modern scholarization, between the the teacher . The analyse of sources was operated starting from the procedures theorical-operationals of the research segment of the history of ideas. As much as the goals proposed to this research can be proof the pertinence of the hypothetical asked about the characteristics of the modern teacher assumed in the pedagogicals treatises from the XVI and XVII centuries / O presente trabalho consistiu numa pesquisa bibliográfica sobre as seguintes obras: Didática Magna (1657), A New Discovery of the Old Art of Teaching Schoole, in four small Treatises (1660), Ratio Studiorum atque Institutio Societatis Jesu (1599), e o diário de Thomas Platter, um professor europeu do século XVI. O processo de configuração do professor moderno nos tratados pedagógicos dos séculos XVI e XVII foi o objeto dessa pesquisa. Pretendeu-se demonstrar que, dado o contexto inter-textual de produção desses tratados, bem como as circunstâncias históricas em que emergiram, essas obras configuraram o professor moderno como um professor-pastor e como um padre-professor. O desenvolvimento da argumentação apoiou-se nas idéias de teóricos educacionais contemporâneos que afirmam que a escolarização moderna não teve ancestrais institucionais, e que o estudo dos discursos pedagógicos produzidos nos séculos XVI e XVII permite compreender os elementos que deram forma à escolarização moderna, entre eles, o professor. A análise das fontes foi operada tomando por princípios os procedimentos teórico-operacionais da linha de pesquisa da história das idéias. Modélisation élastoplastique du comportement mécanique des sols. Application à la liquéfaction des sables et à la sollicitation d'expansion de cavité

L'étude présentée dans ce mémoire se propose de réfléchir sur les relations existant entre une sollicitation homogène de laboratoire telle que l'essai triaxial classique, et une sollicitation non homogène telle que l'expansion de cavité cylindrique, le lien entre les deux types de sollicitation étant réalisé via un modèle de comportement. Ainsi, le premier chapitre constitue une étude bibliographique destinée à faire le point sur les éléments essentiels concernant la rhéologie des sables et sur les modèles de comportement actuellement utilisés. Le deuxième chapitre propose une nouvelle modélisation du comportement mécanique des sables qui s'inscrit entièrement dans le cadre élastoplastique et, dont l'objectif principal est de prendre en compte la notion de paramètre d'état (Been et Jefferies, 1985) et plus récemment d'indice d'état (Ishihara, 1993) sur le comportement de type lâche ou dense du sable. Le dernier chapitre, est consacré à l'étude des expansions de cavité à partir des modèles basés sur l'élastoplasticité généralisée (Zienkiewiez Pastor et Leung 1985). Ce modèle est tout d'abord appliqué à la sollicitation pressiométrique monotone et cyclique dans des sols cohérents avec prise en compte du couplage eau-squelette. Le cas des sables est finalement étudié, en mettant en oeuvre dans le code de calcul développé pour cette étude le modèle de Pastor, Leung et Zienkiewiez (1985) et en comparant les simulations obtenues à des essais réalisés au cylindre épais par Dupla (1995) dont la sollicitation est proche de la sollicitation pressiométrique. On montre comment à partir de l'essai pressiométrique cyclique, il est possible d'évaluer par démarche inverse le potentiel de liquéfaction d'un massif sableux.

L'ecclésiologie dans l'œuvre de Gustave Thils

Comment l'Église catholique peut-elle témoigner de la Bonne Nouvelle évangélique et être reconnue comme un espace habitable pour tous ? Quelles structures pourrait-elle adopter, qui puissent aider les communautés humaines à articuler leurs diversités ? Quelle est la juste place du gouvernement et de l'enseignement dans l'Église ? Quelles communautés peut-elle constituer, qui soient à la fois ouvertes et attentives à sa propre tradition comme à celle des autres ? Gustave Thils [1909-2000], théologien louvaniste, était bien placé pour traiter ces questions particulièrement complexes. Son apport s'étend sur trois périodes distinctes : avant, pendant et après le Concile Vatican II. Son œuvre est très variée, car ses intérêts théologiques se voulaient en prise sur l'actualité de l'Église et du monde. La thèse cherche à présenter une vision systématique et globale de son ecclésiologie. Après une brève biographie de G. Thils et un résumé de ses options théologiques dominantes, le chapitre 2 traite de la méthode historico-critique qu'il a mise en œuvre dans ses études, de l'influence de René Draguet sur sa réflexion, et de ses ouvertures vers une nouvelle herméneutique théologique. Le chapitre 3, intitulé L'ecclésiologie en général, aborde divers éléments de son ecclésiologie On y analyse d'abord l'histoire complexe des « notes » de l'Église et les questions théologiques importantes qu'elles soulèvent. On traite ensuite de l'identité du prêtre à partir de son apostolat, de son rattachement au diocèse, de sa participation à la charge pastorale de l'évêque et de son « devoir » de sainteté. Thils a contribué, par ailleurs, à l'émergence d'une théologie du laïcat, à partir de sa réflexion sur les « réalités terrestres ». Il a développé en outre le thème de l'égalité entre tous les membres de l'Église et celui de la vocation universelle à la sainteté. À propos de l'évêque, Thils s'inspire d'une lecture critique de la constitution Pastor aeternus de Vatican I. C'est ensuite dans Lumen gentium 21 que Thils trouvera de nouvelles ressources pour redéfinir l'identité de l'évêque, sa mission, sa responsabilité propre et son rapport à l'Église locale. Tout en sauvegardant la place privilégiée du christianisme comme ultime Révélation de Dieu, Thils jette un regard résolument positif sur les religions non-chrétiennes, considérées comme des valeurs appelant un complément. La conclusion synthétique cherche à mettre en évidence l'évolution des intérêts théologiques successifs de Thils, ainsi que leur ancrage dans une ecclésiologie en constante mutation.
