Feuilletons dramatiques et transferts culturels franco-brésiliens au XIXe siècle : enjeux d'une édition de la "Semaine Lyrique" de Martins Pena / Theater serials and French-Brazilian cultural transfer in the 19th century : aspects of an edition of Martins Pena's "Lyric Week"

Gimenez, Priscila Renata 05 March 2014 (has links)
In the perspective of researches about literature and press theory and about cultural transfers, this study presents a comparative analysis between Hector Berlioz’ and Théophile Gautier's theater serials and Brazilian dramatic writer Martins Pena’s serials about lyric theater wrote by the Brazilian dramatic writer Martins Pena. He wrote the series “Lyric Week” published in Jornal do Commercio in 1846-1847. In a diachronic perspective which consider the process of periodical press globalization in the 19th century, this investigation proposes to reconstruct and observe the transfers of media cultural practices from the French press to the Brazilian press which determined the acclimatization of the theater serials in Brazil. Emphasizing the method analysis, the construction of critical discourse and style of French theater serials and that of Martins Pena, we focused our study on the literary aspects as well as on the impact their adaptation had in the Brazilian press. Specifically, the form and manifestation of the (journalistic) irony in the writing of the columnists constitute the focus of the analysis. Our hypothesis is that Martins Pena adapted aspects of the French columnists’ literary writing, creating an autonomous and legitimate poetic. In addition to being the first cultural content chronicle series of the daily press of Rio de Janeiro, the “ Lyric Week” distinguishes itself from previous Brazilian theater serials through the ironic and fictional writing assimilated and recreated throughout the series by Martins Pena.

From head to tale : the circulation, display and representation of big-game material culture, c. 1870-1920

Moore, Gillian Lizbeth January 2017 (has links)
Artefacts created from big game material proliferated during the period between 1870 and 1920 and, through their physical and metaphorical circulation as trophies, mementos, furnishings, garments, and personal accoutrements, became increasingly visible as they percolated from their predominantly elite genesis, into a multiplicity of public, domestic and civic spaces. This study seeks to discern the effect of their dissemination, showing how it impacted on the museum displays, domestic decor, fashionable dress and commodity culture of the era. It reflects the extensive representation of big game hunting, and its material effusions, in the text and images of the expanding periodical press, recognising the contribution of published sources to public reception of these artefacts and their developing role as commodities. My thesis aims to demonstrate that detailed examination of the varied and abundant artefacts which stemmed from big game hunting can offer valuable insights into the social and cultural history of the era and argues that this material's entanglement in Britain's imperial project is too significant to overlook. It contends that the transitions from nature to culture, which these objects illustrate, map the reach of the burgeoning Empire, and plot the dichotomies of late Victorian, and Edwardian, engagements with the natural world and subaltern nations. Scholarly work by John M. Mackenzie and Harriet Ritvo, in the mid 1980's, firmly established the relevance of the examination of material culture, within the contexts of animal studies and imperial history, as a fruitful field for academic research, arguing convincingly for further examination of its varied manifestations. However, a generation later, no comprehensive exploration of those elements appertaining to big game hunting has been attempted. Encouraged by the post-millennial 'material turn' in social history, identified by scholars including Bill Brown (2001), Erica Rappaport (2006) and Frank Trentmann (2009), my work draws on a wealth of contemporaneous factual sources including museum, exhibition and trade catalogues, fashion plates, unpublished correspondence, biographical material, museum records, archival sources and popular fiction, to explore the circulation and representation of big game material culture, during a long fin de siècle, and reveal its extensive influence. As a whole, this thesis seeks to offer a nuanced, detailed and holistic view of the visibility and affect of the material culture of big game hunting in the period.

Thus, we focused on the historical and literary revival of the author Antonio Joaquim Pereira da Silva (1876-1944), born in the city of Araruna (PB), he was the author of seven books of poetry, affiliated to the symbolist aesthetics and the first writer from Paraiba to occupy a seat in the Brazilian Academy of Letters in 1934. Pereira da Silva was also a journalist and a literary critic who joined Rio periodical press in the late nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth century, a period when newspapers were the primary means of written circulation and dissemination of literature in Brazil and the Brazilian press was living a moment of transformation in the Brazilian historical and cultural setting. Although in life and after his death, his name has been taken up by literary critics until the mid-1960s, taking part of the list of symbolist authors, his name is deleted by the history of literature we know today. For this reason, our purpose, therefore, is to resume this historical-literary author, his career in newspapers and his literary criticism from the late nineteenth century to the first half of the twentieth century as well as pointing out the probable causes of his subsequent erasure. For this research, we used a variety of sources such as newspapers, academies of letters, literary criticism and the education system under the theoretical framework of Bourdieu (1996, 2009), Roger Chartier (1998; 1999; 2002; 2007), Foucault (1999; 2001), Michel Certeau (1998), De Luca (2005), Barbosa (2007), Barbosa (2010), among others, refering to cultural practices related to literary media and reading but also to the systems of power and their implications for the composition and maintenance of the literary canon.

Imagining Great Britain, Europe and the Colonies in the Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure (1747-1814). An Enquiry into the foundation of Britishness

Ferro, Gaia 28 June 2024 (has links)
The 18th century witnessed a significant evolution of national identities across the European continent. In Great Britain, this process encountered challenges in reconciling three distinct regional identities: Scotland, Ireland, and England retained separate identities characterized by distinct customs, histories, and traditions. Consequently, efforts to cultivate a shared sense of Britishness turned to the English periodical press. The increasing readership of newspapers played a pivotal role in defining a cohesive British national identity. This thesis examines the emergence of Britishness within a specific monthly periodical, the Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure (1747-1814). As implied by its title, the Universal Magazine sought to cover a diverse array of topics in its articles, making its contribution to fostering a sense of national unity indispensable. In line with the notion of a gradual emergence of national identity in Great Britain, this thesis investigates the role of print culture in shaping Britishness. Emphasizing themes concerning the relationship between Great Britain and other national identities, including internal divisions within the British Isles, the study explores how cultural and political developments influenced conceptions of British identity and national and international politics. Thus, the thesis aligns with the concept of a national identity forged in response to 18th-century events in Europe and North America. Using the Universal Magazine as a primary source, this study analyzes a selection of articles relevant to the aforementioned themes. This selection was curated following a preliminary process of cataloguing and indexing all articles published in the magazine during its existence (1747-1814), given the absence of prior studies on this specific periodical. Ultimately, the thesis aims to provide insights into the themes and political inclinations of the Universal Magazine. In line with the perspectives of scholars such as L. Colley and B. Anderson, who advocate for the national press as a unifying force, this thesis offers a conceptual framework for understanding the connections between Great Britain and continental Enlightenment culture. It demonstrates how this intersection influenced the formation of Britishness.

Júlio Gonçalves e a literatura romântica na Índia portuguesa / Júlio Gonçalves and the romantic literature in Portuguese India

Oliveira Filho, José Antonio Pires de 07 February 2018 (has links)
This thesis has as its main aim the analyses of the oeuvre of the Goan writer Júlio Gonçalves, composed of non-fiction works such as biographies, historiographical studies and chronicles, as well as short stories and poetry. The corpus of the work comes, mainly, from the journal Illustração Goana (1864-1866) that Gonçalves both directed and edited. The present study has two main objectives: to deal with the literary press of which this publication was part, and to analyze the prose production of Júlio Gonçalves. Having been the first author to write and publish short stories, he was one of the great mentors of literature in Goa, and could be considered as a paradigm of the literary production of Goan literature of the time.

(Re)vendo as páginas, (re)visando os laços e (des)atando nós: as relações literárias e culturais luso-brasileiras através dos periódicos portugueses (1899-1922) / (Re)viewing the pages, (re)ordering the ties and (un) tying the knots: the literary Luso-Brazilian relationships across the Portuguese journals (1899 -1922).

Fernanda Suely Muller 08 April 2011 (has links)
Historically, in Brazil and Portugal, the beginning of the twentieth century is considered as a very significant moment for both countries, a situation that is explained not only if we observe each internal peculiarity of those nations, but also what concerns the relations between them, especially in the cultural sphere. Although it may seem incongruous, especially in the first twenty years, we observed both a growing opposition to the Lusitanian presence (especially in the city of Rio de Janeiro), and a big promotion of \"agreements\" and \"projects\" that aimed getting Portugal and Brazil closer to one another through the press. Therefore, we intend to show in this work a short overview of these relationships through the analysis of some Portuguese magazines that circulated in Brazil (such as Brasil-Portugal, Atlântida, Orpheu, A Rajada and Nação Portuguesa, for example), and that aimed also to help the Brazilian public reduce the \"mutual ignorance\" between the nations mentioned by these publications. To that end, we first proceeded with the compilation and cataloging of articles about the Luso- Brazilian theme, which were extracted from the chosen magazines, to integrate our corpus and, in a second step, we analyzed more thoroughly the articles that we considered to be the most significant ones. Finally, when we identified some causes and justifications presented by the Portuguese press to ratify that constantly \"Luso-Brazilian friendship\", which was seen as inconvenient by the majority of the local intelligentsia, we reflected especially in light of studies made by Said and Bourdieu, for example the relevance of this \"imperialist attitude\" articulated by this Lusitanian elite and the importance to Portugal of maintaining this hegemony in their (old) colony.
