Avramidis, Georgios January 2018 (has links)
The main aim of this paper is to highlight and investigate children’s perspectives on the ordinance of students’ elections and students’ councils in the country of Greece. This study is motivated by the huge lack of research on the topic in Greece and aim to seek student’s views in regards to students’ councils. This qualitative research endeavors to find how students decide to enter the school elections as candidates, what they hope to achieve through their candidacy and how they perceive democratization in education via these elections. Finally, it is asked from them to evaluate the utility of the whole ordinance of students’ communities. Six students, aged from 15 to 18, who are attending the Greek public High School (the name in Greek is Lykeio) were interviewed; three boys and three girls. The researcher chose one boy and one girl from each of the three years of High School. In order to hear children’s voice and allow them space and time to express their perceptions, semi-structured interviews were conducted with open ended questions while at the same time encouraging them to give clarifications on their answers. A thematic analysis was conducted on the transcribed material of the interviews and four primary themes were emerged: I) being candidates as a personal decision, II) aspirations for being candidates, III) Significance of the ordinance on school elections and on students’ councils and IV) democratization of children through school elections. In conclusion, this paper, by closely examining students’ perspectives and beliefs, seeks to shed new light on the neglected issue of students’ elections and councils in the country of Greece.

In general terms, society and the market have been demanding from the business community a socially responsible attitude in order to minimize not only existing social inequalities but also the negative impact caused by the development of activities in some sectors of the economy. The CSR also enters the organizations through the hands of the Professional Administrator, formed by the Universities, which give him concepts and practices aimed at the knowledge of the management field. Therefore, the present study analyzes the perception of management graduates, from the Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Àrido, about four conceptual perspectives of CSR. The objective of this study is to identify the occurrence of changes in the conception of responsibility that the administrator experienced in his training and that which is practiced in the company in which he works. This is a qualitative and descriptive research, which selected 15 graduates of the last two pedagogical projects of the mentioned teaching institution, who work in administrative activities in the public and service sectors, in micro, small, medium and large companies. Interviews were used as a data collection tool, applied to graduates. The research showed that there are no changes in the conception of social responsibility that the administrator experienced in his / her formation, however, this one is not able to be effective in the company that acts, because while the egress has its training focused on the Perspective of Competitive Advantage and Systemic, The organization, experiences practices focused on the Social Action Perspective / A Responsabilidade Social Corporativa surgiu e se perpetua nas organizações como resposta à intervenção estatal, como meio de garantir o sistema econômico vigente.

Being "Chuzai" in Southern Illinois: The Attitude of Japanese Parents toward the Maintenance of Language and Culture

Hamamoto, Miho 01 August 2011 (has links)
This study is a qualitative research of Japanese "chuzai" families (short-term residents) concerning parental perspectives toward children's education in Southern Illinois. The primary data was collected by questionnaires, individual and group interviews, and school observations. The main participants of this study were five mothers of the "chuzai" group in Southern Illinois, in which questionnaires, individual and group interviews were conducted. Furthermore, in order to gain an in-depth understanding of the children's education, school visits were made to the Japanese Saturday School and the ELL (English Language Learner) program of the local school which the children attended, including classroom observations. Additionally, interviews with the principal of the Japanese school and the ELL teacher were conducted, and questionnaires were also distributed to all the parents whose children attended the Japanese Saturday School. The notion of imagined communities (Anderson, 1991; Norton, 2001) was employed as the theoretical framework in order to examine "chuzai" people's current lives in Southern Illinois and their attitudes toward their children's education. The study reveals that "chuzai" families are different in various ways from both "eiju" (permanent residents) and Japanese communities in larger cities. Even though the Japanese community in Southern Illinois is small and features limited access to Japanese products, they maintain their Japanese lifestyle and strong connection with Japanese people in their community remarkably well. Interestingly, they show positive attitudes toward living in Southern Illinois, but they also have concerns due to their transiency as "chuzai." In relation to perspectives on children's education, this study suggests that parents have positive perspectives toward maintaining their Japanese culture, as well as learning the English language and experiencing American culture. Their heritage as Japanese strongly affects their daily practices even on a subconscious level; furthermore, their status of "chuzai" emphasizes the importance of keeping up their children's academic skills with the Japanese standard. At the same time, they also consider this short-term stay in the U.S. as an advantage in terms of providing new experiences and an opportunity for their children to learn English. The findings indicate that parents' imagined communities for their children's future have a great impact on their current investment (Norton Peirce, 2000). "Chuzai" families envision their future lives in Japan because they plan to return eventually, thus affecting their hopes for their children to be successful while readapting to schools in their home country. In this regard, Japanese Saturday school plays a crucial role as support for preparing children for their return to Japan regarding academic and social skills. In addition to the importance of becoming successful in Japan, parents also believe that the experience in the U.S. and English skills broaden their children's future in a global economy. The ELL program at the local school helps children in terms of learning English in order for them to be able to manage school life in the U.S. This study suggests that parental perspectives influence their children's education, and it is important for educators to understand the students' backgrounds and needs in order to provide appropriate education.

Effects of English medium instruction on students' learning experiences and quality of education in content courses in a public college in Oman

AlBakri, Saousan January 2017 (has links)
This study critically explores the perceptions of students on the implementation of the English as a medium of instruction (EMI) policy at a public higher education institution in Oman and its effect on the quality of their learning experiences and academic performance. Although the Gulf has recently witnessed an increase in research on EMI, such research is rather scarce in Oman in particular from a critical approach. Through the focus on students’ perspectives, the study gives a voice to otherwise voiceless students whose insights have been largely ignored by language policy planners. For the study, a critical exploratory methodology was adopted where in-depth qualitative data were collected through a two-phase sequential mixed methods approach that consisted of a questionnaire distributed among 328 students studying in seven different faculties, 14 classroom observations and 14 students’ interviews. The findings suggest that the majority of participants either supported or accepted the EMI policy for pragmatic reasons based on the utilitarian function of English as a lingua franca in Oman and its requirement for future jobs. However, the participants acknowledged that they faced great difficulties in their study which was mainly caused by their insufficient language competence. It was also acknowledged that Arabic as a medium of instruction (AMI) would lead to a more comprehensive understanding of the subject matter and would most probably lead to better academic performance. Few participants found that the endorsement of EMI negatively influenced their ability to use Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and marginalised the role of Arabic in their society. Overall, the implementation of EMI had a disempowering effect on students with low English language proficiency and had a negative psychological impact on them. Based on the findings, the EMI policy has been contested since it does not provide students with equal opportunities to study at tertiary level. In addition, the quality of education has been compromised in response to assumed market forces. Also, a strict EMI policy does not allow students to enhance their Arabic competence which is relevant for future employment. The pedagogic competence of teachers has also been questioned and gaps in the support system for students with language deficiencies have been identified. The study makes several recommendations that are expected to improve the learning conditions of students studying at tertiary level through EMI. The recommendations include the enhancement of English language teaching (ELT) in schools to better prepare students for their academic study in English. In addition, AMI courses should be offered in all faculties due to its support in gaining profound comprehension of the subject matter and its relevance for students’ future jobs. Teachers should be given the opportunity to develop their pedagogic competence that would allow them to use a student-centred approach in teaching through EMI or AMI. Finally, the college should increase students’ support in their study especially in EMI through creating support centres where they could resort to in case they face any difficulties in their study.

No. of bitstreams: 1 SoniaRMR.pdf: 768646 bytes, checksum: 9d00ae185722d9ef083b12e16226804f (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-09-12 / The theme Corporate Social Responsibility is relatively recent both in the academic field and in the business practice. Because of the lack of socialization of experiences and precision of concepts, there are gaps regarding the understanding of the subject and, also, how to conduct operations. This study just seeks to investigate such matter, focusing applications of social responsibility in business. It takes, as empirical field, winners of the PSQT - SESI Prize of Quality at Work in Rio Grande do Norte (2002-2007) in order to systematize the various approaches on the issue, aiming to reveal subjective visions and perspectives of the theme. It is characterized as a qualitative study, carried out by structured interview. The universe was composed by 15 companies. It was used analysis of content categorical as an axis for the interpretation of the information. Three approaches guided the analysis: Business Ethics, (normative); Business & Society (contractual); Social Issues Management (strategic). The findings are related in three ways: 1) reasons for the CSR practice; 2) the results obtained; 3) the means of CSR. It was found that the award participation occurs, mostly, linked to SESI invitations, so, as an articulated movement of industrial corporations in Brazil it occurs, also, because of the organizational commitment with the society and the possibility of internal and social growths and because of the importance attributed to the report as an instrument of consultancy. There are no indicators to check impacts of organizational interventions, in spite of the existence of planning for the actions. Social responsibility appears as a tool to reinforce the organizational image and to increase satisfaction of the employees. There is a tendency of large and medium firms to a contractual commitment while the small and the micros firms are on strategic or normative level. The analysis of the perspectives of social responsibility future revealed trends towards for strategic approach / O tema Responsabilidade Social Empresarial (RSE) ? relativamente recente no meio acad?mico nacional e no mundo dos neg?cios como pr?tica de gest?o. Efficacy of the legal frameworks for child protection in Nigeria

Diriwari, Wilson Ola January 2017 (has links)
This research evaluates the potential challenges to a total eradication of child trafficking in Nigeria. The magnitude of the problem, as well as its despicable nature, triggered increasing legislations in Nigeria in recent years. This research shows that despite the remarkable efforts in term of law and policy approaches the problem appears to persist. The objective of the research is to demonstrate that law and policies approaches to addressing the issue are not proving effective. It appears that several socio-cultural issues related to child trafficking remain unaddressed. Despite the wealth of knowledge in relation to the topic there is a gap in literature. Indeed the existing gap in literature regarding child trafficking in Nigeria is evidenced by the fact that no adequate way forward has been indicated to overcome the phenomenon. In an attempt to fil the existing gap this research inquires whether the non-achievement of goals in combatting child trafficking is imputable to the lack of toughness in the spirit of the laws and policies or the lack of efficacy due to ineffective implementation and enforcement. By proving the appropriate answers to these crucial questions the research may not only fil the existing gap in literature by also offer the adequate approach to be taken by law and policy makers and other stakeholders in the fight against child trafficking to overcome the problem. The approach taken in conducting this research is textual analysis or doctrinal analysis and deconstruction of the enforcement mechanisms of human trafficking laws and policies in Nigeria in general. However Nigeria has sufficiently domesticated international human trafficking legislation and Human Rights instruments, the issue of enforcement remains a crucial element in achieving the ultimate goal of total eradication. Where such prospect appears unattainable, it is necessary to adopt a holistic approach to combatting child trafficking in order to achieve the ultimate goal of total eradication.
