Sexual Health Perspectives of Pastoral Adolescent Girls in Samburu County

Odera, Doreen Awino January 2019 (has links)
Teenage girls from the Turkana pastoral community in Northern Kenya have varying views of sexuality. Some parents choose to send their daughters to school creating disparate levels of knowledge about their bodies and sexual health. To better evaluate these differences, girls (13-18 years) were asked to develop body maps, a methodological technique that enables verbal and visual data collection. Interviews and participant observations were also used to gather data. This research involved a total of 33 participants and included both school going and non-school going girls. Triangulation of data from Interviews, participant observation, and body mapping provided multiple angles into the female pastoralist’s life experiences. The study demonstrated the heterogeneity and disparities that are present within pastoralists population in Samburu county, providing a more detailed understanding for future medical anthropological studies. The research furthered anthropological inquiry methodologically by introducing body mapping as a complement to conducting traditional ethnographic research.

The positive and negative impact of permanent night duty on officials in the Department of Correctional Services

Smit, Maria Elizabeth Catharina (Marietjie) January 2014 (has links)
The Department of Correctional Services is the South African Government Department that is responsible for the smooth running of the South African correctional system. Correctional facilities have to be staffed twenty four hours a day and therefore correctional officials have to work fixed or rotating shifts to ensure that the needs of offenders are taken care of. The number of staff members in many South African correctional centres is not sufficient to ensure proper care and management of offenders, but staff shortages during the night is even more chronic compared to staff shortages experienced during the day. It is vital that correctional officials be alert and vigilant at all times and therefore these staff shortages contribute to high levels of stress, lack of motivation and feelings of being overwhelmed by the work load. Shift work is a phenomenon that is increasing worldwide. It is important to understand the impact of work schedules as more people seem to be working shifts that do not conform to the standard work week. Shift workers seem very healthy when their illnesses are compared to that of the general public. Many health problems have been detected in shift workers, including stress related conditions, as any work schedule can act as a stressor if the needs of the individual worker are not taken into consideration. Sleeping patterns during the day differ from sleeping patterns at night. Shift work disrupts a person’s circadian rhythms and therefore contributes to poorer physical and psychological health. It further causes poorer productivity and increases the possibility of becoming involved in accidents. Working night duty is very stressful to the night shift worker who has to cope with challenges at work and at home. There is a variety of common stressors at work that affect shift workers physiologically (cardiovascular, stroke, digestive problems, back pain and arthritis, headaches, increased blood pressure and hormonal), psychologically (burnout, depression, anxiety, family problems, sleep problems and job dissatisfaction) and behaviouraly (absence, tardiness, substance abuse, accidents, sabotage / violence, poor decision making, poor job performance and a high personnel turnover). This study focused on understanding the positive and negative impact of working permanent night duty on correctional officials. The findings of this study will be helpful to correctional officials who work permanent night duty in addressing employee workplace support. / Dissertation (MSW (Health Care))--University of Pretoria, 2014. / lk2014 / Social Work and Criminology / MSW (Health Care) / Unrestricted

Föräldrars upplevelse av att leva med barn med diabetes typ 1 / Parent's experience of living with children with type 1 diabetes

Sällström, Carolina, Hansson, Malin January 2020 (has links)
Background: When a child suffers from chronic illness, it affects the whole family. Type 1 diabetes in children is becoming more common and over 900 children in Sweden per year suffer from the disease. Self-care becomes a fact and parents have the greatest responsibility for nursing. There will be major changes in life and previous routines changed to new ones. The nurse has an important responsibility in supporting and guiding the parents in an individualized and appropriate manner. Aim: The purpose of this literature study was to elucidate parents' experience of living with a child with type 1 diabetes. Method: The method used was a literature-based study based on qualitative studies. Nine qualitative articles were analyzed according to Friberg's five-step model. Results: The result is presented in two themes as; When life changes and New challenges. When life changed, three sub-themes meant describing the parents' experience of the changed life situation. New challenges with three subthemes focus on the parents 'experience of balancing the parent's perspective with the carers' perspective. Conclusion: Understanding the parents 'experience of living with a child with type 1 diabetes can help the nurse meet the parents' nursing needs by taking the responsibility of nursing and using their core competencies.

Att vara anhörig : Palliativ vård i hemmet ur anhörigas perspektiv, en litteraturstudie / To be a close one : Home based palliativer care, the relatives experiences, a literature review

Storinder, Robin, Sjödin, Johan January 2020 (has links)
Background: Sweden's population is expected to grow, studies show that many would prefer to die at home over institutional place of care. Good palliative care requires accessibility and competence and is designed from the four cornerstones. Patients feel a stress over involving relatives in their situation, therefore it is important to find out how the relatives view the situation. Aim: The purpose of this study is describing relatives' experiences of palliative care at home. Methods: Literature study based on nine qualitative studies. Data were collected from the Cinahl and Psycinfo databases. Keywords forming the correct search string contained: palliative care, family, family perspective etc. With boundaries such as english text and year: 2000-2020. Analysis was performed according to a five-step analysis. Result: Two main themes were identified with three sub-themes respectively. Participation and Relationships were the main themes. Sub-themes consisted of: Change in everyday life; Responsibility; Sufficient or incomplete information; The relationship with formal caregivers; The relationship with other relatives and friends; The relationship with the patient. Conclusion: At home caretakers should always keep in mind that the relatives who live, or temporarily live, together with the patient are also part of the care that needs support, help and information.

Breaking down barriers : A qualitative study on willingness to communicate in EFL classrooms through perspectives from teachers in Sweden

Nilsson, Emma January 2021 (has links)
This study aims at exploring (1) EFL students’ willingness to communicate (WTC) from the perspectives of some English teachers in Swedish upper secondary schools, and (2) the same teachers’ reported strategies for dealing with their students’ WTC. Six teachers from five different upper secondary schools in Sweden, who all teach English in different programs, volunteered to participate in the study. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews, and the transcripts were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The results of the study showed that teachers perceive both social and psychological factors to influence students’ WTC, and that motivation plays an important role. A natural part of discussing EFL learners’ WTC also seemed to be to discuss their use of the target language. Strategies that were reportedly perceived to enhance EFL learners’ WTC were building respectful relationships within the classroom, using meaningful and relevant topics, creating communicative settings, correcting mistakes cautiously and utilizing digital tools. However, enhancing students’ WTC was considered challenging, and more teacher training in affecting factors of and strategies for enhancing EFL learners’ WTC are suggested to be needed.
