'It's more than a game': Young women's experiences with physical activity as a means for resilience throughout adolesence

2014 March 1900 (has links)
This phenomenological study explored how physical activity is experienced as a means for resilience as well as the defining characteristics and meaning of that experience. Four participants were interviewed, aged 18 to 21 years; all of which were receiving a university education at the time of the interviews. Physical activity has been connected to various physical, intellectual, psychological, and social benefits during adolescence. The participants in this study described their journeys to achieving wellness despite growing up with adversities collectively deemed as adverse. Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was the methodology utilized to investigate the data generated through several semi-structured in depth interviews with the participants. The analyzed data formed the overarching theme of self development in the face of adversity, which was evident throughout the three superordinate themes: channeling energy, nurturing relationships, and challenging the self. The participants explained their passages through adolescence amidst adversities to be ones full of ups and downs, but ultimately progress towards their current accomplishments, goals, dreams, and personal growth. The themes are discussed within the context of the current literature and then followed by recommendations for future research, considerations for professionals, and a conclusion including words of wisdom from the participants.

Transwomen's memories of parental relationships : an interpretative phenomenological analysis

Dearden, Georgina Eleanor Mary January 2010 (has links)
This project presents an in-depth idiographic study of how a developing Transwoman identity impacts upon parental relationships in childhood and how these relationships impact sense of self and later relationships. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six Transwomen and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis applied to the transcripts. Two major themes emerged: the struggle to belong and the complex journey to becoming me. The theme the struggle to belong consists of six super ordinate themes: the disappointing feminine me, trying to belong, the unacceptable me, disconnection from others and self, the struggle in new relationships, and the influence of context. The second major theme, the complex journey to becoming me, comprises two super ordinate themes: the complexity of realising me and reconnection while still being me. The results are mainly discussed using theories of Parent Child Connectedness (PCC) and psychological autonomy. Areas for future research are highlighted. This study provides a valuable insight into the complex experience of negotiating a transsexual childhood which will be useful for professionals working with people with gender identity issues.

A phenomenological study of criminal behavior among adult males in the Federal prison system: implications for social work practice

Owens, Angela M. 01 May 2002 (has links)
This study has two primary objectives: first, to examine the characteristics of 75 offenders incarcerated at the Federal Correctional Institution in Talladega, Alabama, using the Pre-sentence Investigation (PSI) Report data, and second, to delve into the phenomenology of the offenders through a lengthy interview process. To achieve these objectives, three offenders types were constructed based on criminal history analysis: First-time Offenders, Repeat Drug Offenders, and Mixed Multiple Offenders. The study found that First-time Offenders were less deviant in all respects than the other two subtypes. First-time Offenders, hailing from lower-middle class environments, were relatively better educated, more skilled, employed for longer periods, and possessed more self-control than members of the other subtypes. First-time Offenders were frequently reared in intact homes with both parents present (or involved in their lives). Repeat Offenders had mostly drug convictions with or without traffic violations and misdemeanors charges. Mixed Multiple Offenders had lengthier arrest histories than other subtypes with a variety of convictions ranging from a simple battery to homicide, rape or armed robbery-indicating a more threatening, violent, and pervasive deviant and/or criminal lifestyle than First-time or Repeat Offenders. Unlike the First time Offenders, both the Repeat Drug Offenders and Mixed Multiple Offenders were relatively less educated, less skilled, employed for less periods of time or sporadically or irregularly employed, and were reared in lower class, broken homes environments with a larger number of family members present. Findings from this study provide a more in-depth understanding of what criminal behavior means to those who commit criminal acts and their life circumstances under which it occurs. These findings will enable social workers to design and implement more effective intervention strategies to assist offenders with their behavioral problems

Svensson, Therese, Zaring, Malin January 2016 (has links)
Background: People are in general obsessed with their looks. With constant influences from the society, people are always vulnerable for daily information which passes signals and messages about how you should look and be. Aim: To describe the adult experience of living with Anorexia Nervosa and the study groups. Method: A quality review with ten qualitative articles which has been analysed and compiled in the result Result: Ambivalence is one of the strongest characteristics of Anorexia Nervosa. The feeling that the disease is your best friend which you want to nurture and keep to feel safe. A security to hide behind, a comfort and identity which is strong. Meanwhile people with AN have to fight with the desire to be healthy which gives them feelings of worry, anxiety and depression. Methodological aspect: All articles presented their study group. Conclusion: The awareness about AN is increasing and these patients can occur everywhere within health-care institutions. A general nurse will probably meet these patients and it’s important to have knowledge about how people with AN experience their disease.

Reflections on the newly qualified social worker's journey : from university training to qualified practice

Walker, Clare January 2014 (has links)
This qualitative research study explores the experience of graduating social workers making the transition from university training into work as qualified social work practitioners. Most studies in this area look at the practice readiness of the newly qualified professional. This study looks at the participants’ experience in the work place. How do participants experience this journey of transition? What skills, particularly reflective practice and supervision, learned in training, are important to them? Eight graduates were interviewed three times as they began to practice, after six months and at the end of year one. Four people worked in children’s services, four in adult services. The methodology adopted for this research was Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). These findings suggest there is a process of transition that has three strands, phased development, a professional strand and a psychological /emotional strand. These strands are unique and taken together give a holistic view of an individual’s journey of transition. Across the eight participants there were commonalities and divergences between transition experiences. However a model of transition did emerge which may be applicable to other professional spheres. Reflective practice and supervision appear to be key elements of a newly qualified social workers practice. All participants received supervision; for the majority supervision was focused on case discussions and the social workers decision making: Little place was given to reflection on practice this was seen as an activity that worker’s carried out on their own in their car following a home visit, or on the way home at the end of the working day. There was no clear model of reflective practice used. A further finding concerns the methodology IPA, particularly this researcher’s experience of bracketing and research journaling as part of the research process.

THEY, TOO, SING AMERICA: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF USG POLICY 4.1.6 AND ITS PERCEIVED IMPACTS ON DACA STUDENTS IN THE STATE OF GEORGIA

Maltese, Ryan Z. 12 May 2017 (has links)
Research interrogating the development, implementation and enforcement of reactionary and conservative social and educational movements and policies has enabled us to show the con- tradictions and unequal effects and the disproportionate and disparate impacts on the lives of mi- nority students (Apple, 2009). This research study examined how the Board of Regents, Geor- gia’s higher education governing body, interprets and enforces the “lawful presence” require- ment set forth in USG Policy 4.1.6. The study gave primary consideration to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, who the data show have been systematically excluded from access to certain state colleges and universities without legal cause or justification. The study also examined the perceived impacts of Policy 4.1.6 on DACA students seek- ing admission to the state’s most selective colleges and universities. Data collected from partici- pant interviews of DACA students, along with data gathered through participant observation and documents analysis, were used to create a greater understanding of the impacts of Policy 4.1.6 on both DACA and undocumented students. The study is significant because it traverses matters of current legal import, while also contributing to the growing body of literature concerning access to postsecondary education for undocumented students. Using the methodological approach of critical theory, the study incorporated elements of critical race theory (CRT), critical Latino/a studies (LatCrit), and critical policy analysis in the exploration of the various narratives and counternarratives created by the enforcement of Policy 4.1.6. Using Interpretive Phenomenologi- cal Analysis (IPA) of the interview data, a critical assessment of the perceived impacts of Geor- gia immigration and education policy development and implementation is also provided. Finally, this study revealed the ways in which ‘race-neutral’ educational policies result in discriminatory practices against minorities, specifically undocumented students, the majority of who are Lati- no/a. The knowledge gained from this research gives policymakers on either side of this issue with analysis that can more effectively guide them in the interpretation of federal mandates and conflicting state laws that result in the subordination of significant segments of student popula- tions.

This fact has motivated a great number of theoretical and empirical studies within the field of Human Sciences: Sociology, Law and Psychology. This study aims a phenomenological exploitation of the meanings lived with the parents, woman, other and of own sexuality, that could support the conduct of three imprisoned men from the prison system in Rio Verde-Go (Agência do Sistema Prisional de Rio Verde-GO ) sentenced for rape. The verbalization of such significances wisely silenced (neglected) in referred to sexual violence was stimulated by the thematic use of projective techniques. The analyses of the unveiled significances point to the importance of those who are related to the father`s authority and have sexuality issues. The results confirm the freudian thesis about the role on the explored and their influence on the sexually deviated conduct.

Understanding and experiencing ageing : the perspectives of older people with intellectual disabilities

Whiteley, Anna January 2016 (has links)
Background: This thesis contains two elements: the first is a systematic review examining some of the determinants of quality of life for people with intellectual disability. Understanding these determinants can drive improvement at both individual and societal level. Yet there are a number of quality of life measures which might confound findings between studies. This systematic review sought to identify factors that influence quality of life using self-report on one measure developed for use with people with intellectual disability, the ‘Quality of Life Questionnaire’ (Schalock & Keith 1993). The second element is an empirical study that aims to explore the lived experience of aging for older adults with intellectual disability. There are noted differences between people with and without disability as they grow older, for example in terms of health and social opportunity. Previous studies have not consistently sought the experience of the people with intellectual disability themselves, or have used participants not traditionally considered older adults. This study aims to address gaps and further our knowledge in the lived experience of getting older for older adults with intellectual disability. Method: Within the systematic review a systematic search of relevant studies to 20th January 2015 was completed using a specified inclusion criteria, yielding 13 peerreviewed journal articles. These were scored on 11-point purpose-designed quality criteria. For the empirical study semi-structured interviews were completed with ten participants with intellectual disability (age range 60 – 74 years, five female) regarding their understanding of getting older and their experience of ageing. Nine transcribed interviews were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Results: The systematic review found that living in a semi-independent environment or an urban setting, being employed, being involved in domestic and community activities, receiving social support and possessing social skills and self-determination were factors that improved quality of life for people with intellectual disability. Three major themes emerged from the empirical study data when participants discussed getting older: ‘Not changed by ageing’, ‘Thinking about the ageing process’ and ‘What happens when getting older’. Participants tended to feel that they were still the same due to continuation of the same activities and social support. They demonstrated confusion in the ageing process, considering the process ‘inevitable’ but insignificant, although also recognising some changes associated with the process. They discussed their views about what they considered happens when people get older, which tended to be stereotypical and often negative. However they also reflected on their own experiences and how they had changed. Discussion: The methodological quality of the studies reviewed was found to be generally low due to a range of factors including study design, measurement of intellectual disability and reporting of sample demographics and results and therefore conclusions should be treated with caution. This highlights a need for further research with people with intellectual disability of a higher methodological quality. The empirical study is discussed in reference to previous research and gerontological theories of ageing. The study highlighted that staff or family did not broadly discuss ageing with participants and their views often changed over the course of the interviews from more physical and negative aspects to how ageing impacted them. This research demonstrated older adults with intellectual disability do have opinions on ageing. Further exploration with people with intellectual disability on this topic is to be encouraged in the future to develop a more balanced view.

Marocco, Vanessa January 2017 (has links)
The present study problematizes the recurring affirmation that subjects with autism are prejudiced or do not even have language. Indeed, I defend the thesis that subjects with autism can be understood, from language, as a phenomenon, and thus the phenomenon subjects with autism can show up to be a construction of the human species, with implications of this comprehension for the Education. Based on Martin Heidegger's phenomenological perspective, I take language as a "way that one does." This expression has to do with the possibility of having an experience with the language and let it show itself, not reducing or simplifying that notion. Methodologically, in addition to the phenomenological form, I work with five Heideggerian notions - language like language, comprehension, dasein, disposition and phenomenon - and two Foucaultian notions - subject and political investment of bodies. Both authors potentiate the idea of non-naturalization of patterns, as well as show how our subjectivities were managed To elucidate this thought, I analyze the following materials: seventy-four Field Diaries, which show the dispositions of subjects with autism in/as language, contextualized from Education and a Set of Movements, which involves interdiscursivity about subjects with autism in biological, political, social, economic and environmental aspects. From the analysis of these materials, it is possible to infer that there is a fading of language in western society by virtue of the power of communication that the currently rationality values and also a tradition of permanent logics of language operating on different knowledge that constructs, in network, new subjectivities. Therefore, the phenomenon subjects with autism emerges due to human interventions performed on the planet. These interventions came about through the invention of the knowledge and transformations of the resources that make life possible. The advance of the understanding of the phenomenon subjects with autism does not depend on any cure, but of showing that such subjects are heirs of the humanity. The implications of this comprehension configure the responsibility of creating opportunities that are not based only on the comparison between the subjects, as well, as to re-significate the traditionally established senses, besides not naturalizing the pathologization of the subjects with autism.

Santos, Adelar Conceição dos January 2017 (has links)
The present work of thesis consists of an approach to the problem of the foundation of subjectivity in phenomenology from the interpretative hypothesis that we can identify in this a movement that unfolds in the transformation of the initial conception of constituent subjectivity in the question of the constitution of subjectivity. The reading here proposed assumes the premise that this transformation is based on the modifications of the initial program of phenomenology in new methodological paradigms in which the method turns to an ontological approach, and that is from this that we have the problem put then no more In terms of subjectivity as the basis of knowledge but of the ontological problem of being of subjectivity. The way that the analyzes proposed here intend to present is thus the attempt to answer the question of how an ontology of the subject becomes possible in phenomenology.
