It presents the life, thought and work of Lindbeck, reflecting on his three key influences: Ludwig Wittgenstein, and the importance given to language; Clifford Geertz, and semiotic perspective of culture; and Hans Frei, and the role of narrative. It discusses the culturallinguistic proposal of a non-theological theory of religion as an option to cognitivepropositional and experiential-expressive approaches. It introduces the regulative theory of religious doctrines, which is constructed from the two models as opposed to traditional theories of the doctrine, called by Lindbeck propositionalist and symbolist. It reflects on the postliberal theology, which is presented as the successor to both the classical model pre-liberal, and of theological liberalism, as judged by three criteria: fidelity as intratextuality, applicability as futurology, and intelligibility as a skill. It analyzes, finally, the various arguments presented by Lindbeck favorable to its culturallinguistic approach, and the critical reception to the project, suggesting contributions of his approach to a theory of religion. / Este trabalho aborda a teologia pós-liberal de George Lindbeck, apresentada em seu livro The Nature of Doctrine, como uma teoria da religião e da doutrina religiosa. Apresenta a vida, o pensamento e a obra de Lindbeck, refletindo sobre suas três influências fundamentais: Ludwig Wittgenstein, e a importância dada à linguagem; Clifford Geertz, e a perspectiva semiótica de cultura; e Hans Frei, e o papel fundamental da narrativa. Discute a proposta cultural-lingüística de uma teoria não-teológica da religião como opção às abordagens cognitivo-proposicional e expressivo-experiencial. Introduz a teoria regulativa das doutrinas religiosas, que é construída a partir da oposição aos dois modelos tradicionais de teorias da doutrina, denominados por Lindbeck proposicionalista e simbolista. The objective of most religious teachings and concepts is to change the student's attitude that desirable behavior may follow. The measurement of attitudes and the way people feel about certain religious concepts are, to an extent, determinative of their behavior. This realization has brought about a steady growth within the educational field of attitude and opinion measurement. It has also influenced religious educators to investigate this field in their efforts to get people to attain desirable religious goals.The problem, investigated in the present research, was concerned with whether the youth of seminary age in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have favorable attitudes toward temple marriage and whether these attitudes change significantly during the brief time that the students are in seminary.

The Theology of Thomas Dick and its Possible Relationship to that of Joseph Smith

In her attempt to find a strictly human origin for certain doctrines contained in the Book of Abraham, and the later teachings of Joseph Smith, Mrs. Fawn M. Brodie relies upon the writings of one Thomas Dick. Dick was a nineteenth century Scottish scientist-theologian who wrote several volumes on religious and scientific subjects. It is known that at least two volumes were known to at least some of the early Latter-day Saints, for passages from them were quoted in the Messenger and Advocate. The purpose of this thesis has been to research the entire ten volumes of Dick's writings in order to determine the entirety of his theology. The paper first relates the life and general philosophy of Thomas Dick, and then investigates specifics of his theology under the general chapter headings of "God," "Man," and "Salvation." The final two chapters of the thesis deal with those specific aspects of Joseph Smith's theology which Mrs. Brodie claims were influenced by Dick's writings. The conclusion reached as a result of this study is: while it cannot be demonstrated that any of the Prophet's theology has any direct foundation in Thomas Dick's, there may have been impetus gained from Dick's writings in the direction Joseph Smith's theology took, but only if it could be demonstrated that Joseph Smith had read them, and this has not been done, by Mrs. Brodie, nor anyone else.

Since the beginning of her teaching career, the writer has cherished the hope that the day would come when opportunity and freedom would be given whereby the classroom teacher might saturate her teaching, and that without fear, with those values that exalt and refine the life of each youth that she endeavors to guide. That day has dawned! During recent years seminars, workshops and conferences have been held and the Kentucky program for Moral and Spiritual Education has been recognized as providing a formula which is acceptable to public schools. It is true that spiritual values have always been taught but from many sources there has come the conviction that the confused and complex scenes about us today call for a rededication to those early values our forefathers of the New World cherished. The challenge is ours. In accord with the foregoing statement it is therefore appropriate and timely that some phase of "Spiritual Values" should be selected as a topic for this particular study. It has been the author's endeavor to offer suggestions and to present fine practices whereby the program may be made more effective. Therefore, it is with pleasure that this paper is presented as a means of further guidance and emphasis on these very important aspects of our educational responsibility.

The Homecoming of the Negro Spirit: Black Spiritual Intelligence as a Structural Form of Intelligence

In Is Spirituality an Intelligence? Motivation, Cognition, and the concern of Psychology of Ultimate Concern, Robert Emmons develops a case for spirituality as a form of intelligence. His thesis claims that spiritual intelligence is a “set of capacities and abilities that enable people to solve problems and attain goals in their everyday lives”: “the capacity for transcendence; the ability to enter into heightened spiritual states of consciousness; the ability to invest everyday activities, events, and relationships with a sense of the sacred; the ability to utilize spiritual resources to solve problems in living; and the capacity to engage in virtuous behavior. I use spiritual intelligence and these frameworks throughout to address these common themes within the Black community beginning in the Second Great Awakening. I use these five components to illuminate the rise of the revolutionary streams of Spiritual Intelligence within unique works of two Black activists: David Walker and Maria Stewart. I then contextualize these developments in the experiences of my family and my own experiences as a Black activist. I argue for the recognition of religious thinking and illustrate the structural embodiment of this form of spiritual intelligence through multiple generations of Black Activism. I argue that Spiritual Intelligence is one way this particular community fights adversity in greater America society. In valuing religion through understanding these actions of resistance black activism is realized in the larger epistemic landscape. Particularly arguing against the secularization of resistance and activism.

Through his use of "foundation" and "house" metaphors in his "First Sermon Preached to King Charles at St. James, 3 April 1625," John Donne discreetly presents his ideologies and principles before the new king, while simultaneously criticizing his contemporaries' misguided bickering over religio-political factions. This essay seeks to unpack the history surrounding, as well as the casuistical logic found within Donne's first sermon preached during the Caroline period, which both explicitly and implicitly addresses the foremost anxieties of the people of the changing age.

The Bible Against American Slavery: Anglophone Transatlantic Evangelical Abolitionists' Use of Biblical Arguments, 1776-1865

This dissertation argues that transatlantic abolitionists used the Bible to condemn American slavery as a national sin that would be punished by God. In a chronological series of thematic chapters, it demonstrates how abolitionists developed a sustained critique of American slavery at its various developing stages from the American Revolution to the Civil War. In its analysis of abolitionist anti-slavery arguments, “The Bible Against Slavery” focuses on sources that abolitionists generated. In their books, sermons, and addresses they arraigned the oppressive aspects of American slavery. This study shows how American and British abolitionists applied biblical precepts to define the maltreatment of African Americans as sins not only against the enslaved, but also against God. The issues abolitionists exposed to biblical scrutiny, and that are analyzed in this dissertation, correlate with recent scholarly treatments of American slavery. American slavery evolved in the period bracketed by the American Revolution and the Civil War. From 1790 to 1808 American slavery transitioned from reliance on the international slave trade to a domestic market. Abolitionists’ anti-slavery arguments likewise transitioned from focusing on the maltreatment of the immigrant, widow and orphan, to a focus on the proliferation of the sexual exploitation of women and the destruction of African American families. Abolitionists challenged every evolutionary step of American slavery. They argued that slavery was responsible for the destruction of American cities and the split of the British Empire during the crisis of the Revolution. They also denounced the constitutional compromises that protected slavery for 78 years, they challenged its spread westward, decried its dehumanization and sexual exploitation of African Americans, and its destruction of African American families. They galvanized a generation of women anti-slavery activists that launched the feminist movement. Abolitionists’ prediction, meanwhile, that divine retribution would come remained constant. Abolitionists produced such a prodigious body of biblical anti-slavery literature that by the Civil War, their arguments were echoed among northern pastors and even President Abraham Lincoln.

Den amerikanska högern går en rond mot den svenska Humaniströrelsen!

<p>De troende i USA tycks öka i antal efter den 11 september 2001 och det har fått mig att fundera över varför befolkningen i landet är så beroende av att tro på Gud. För att finna svaret på dessa funderingar presenteras i detta arbete en del av den amerikanska religionshistoriken. Redan när emigranterna kom till det nya landet förde de med sig flera olika trosinriktningar och de ansåg att de fått i uppgift av Gud att bebygga det nya landet. Ett flertal olika församlingar bildades varav några var mer strikta än andra och ur dessa striktare grupper ”föddes” fundamentalismen och den religiösa högern. Än idag är dessa grupper starka och påverkar varje amerikans liv på ett eller annat sätt eftersom de har stark inverkan på den politik som förs i landet.</p><p>I Sverige minskar antalet kyrkomedlemmar samtidigt som förbund som Humanisterna märker av en ökning av medlemmar, därför har jag nu tittat lite närmare på vad de sekulära humanisterna i Sverige tror på. För att kunna göra det har jag bland annat intervjuat en tjej som arbetar för förbundet via e-post. Det visade sig att dessa medlemmar inte tror på någon Gud eller något högre väsen utan lever för att förverkliga tron på människan och att alla människor själva bör ta ansvar för sitt eget liv. De arbetar också för att förverkliga demokrati och värna om vår jord till kommande generationer.</p><p>Slutligen har en liten jämförelse mellan de sekulära humanisterna och den religiösa högern gjorts. Frågan är om det finns något som förenar dessa två olika inriktningar. Svaret på det blev att jag inte hittade något som förenar dem. Möjligtvis kan det finnas någon fråga som de kan ha en likartad syn på men inte i någon av de frågor som har tagits upp i detta arbete.</p>
