Heat and salinity transport across the Indonesian Archipelago over the last 270,000 years : new insights into the orbital and millennial dynamics of the Indonesian Throughflow and the Intertropical Convergence Zone / Transport de chaleur et de salinité à travers l'archipel indonésien au cours des 270 000 dernières années : nouveaux enregistrements de la dynamique orbitale et millénaire du flux indonésien et de la zone de convergence intertropicale

Pang, Xiaolei 14 October 2019 (has links)
This work aimed at reconstructing the late Quaternary evolution of surface and thermocline temperature and ocean surface water δ¹⁸O in the Indo-Pacific Warm Pool by combining Mg/Ca-thermometry and stable oxygen isotope analyses on surface and thermocline-dwelling planktonic foraminifers retrieved from sediment cores in the eastern tropical Indian Ocean. This study allowed to re-evaluate the effects of different cleaning methods and in-situ dissolution on the Mg-thermometry of planktonic foraminifers, evidencing the need for species-dependent corrections. Then, the IPWP evolution over the last 270,000 years has been explored. Results indicate that surface water δ¹⁸O chiefly reflects lateral advection rather than local precipitation history, and suggest that surface IPWP hydrology is controlled by the latitudinal migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone at orbital timescale as well as during abrupt northern hemisphere climatic events (i.e. Heinrich events). Ocean surface salinity in the IPWP and Agulhas leakage region varied synchronously, implying their teleconnection through oceanic and atmospheric circulation. Moreover, changes in the transport of thermocline water to the Indian Ocean by the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) have been reconstructed. Results show that thermocline water transport was weaker during glacials (i.e. MIS 6 and 4-2) than during interglacials (MIS 7, MIS 5 and Holocene), and exerted significant influence on Indian Ocean TWT change.

Kinetika fotokatalytické a fotoelektrokatalytické degradace modelových polutantů bazénových vod / Kinetics of photocatalytic and electrophotocatalytic degradation of swimming pool water model pollutants

Morávková, Eva January 2021 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the coating and printing of thin layers based on nanoparticles of titanium dioxide and organosilica binder on various substrates. The influence of the ratio of the both components on the activity of the prepared immobilized layers was studied. Five compositions with different ratios of TiO2 and binder were prepared. The work focuses mainly on the study of photocatalytic and photoelectrocatalytic properties of prepared layers. It was also important to characterize the mechanical properties of the layer such as hardness or adhesion. Both photocatalytic and photoelectrocatalytic activity were determined by monitoring the degradation of the model pollutants in aqueous solutions. The dye Acid Orange 7 and UV filter 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone were used in conjunction with UV/VIS spectroscopy or high performance liquid chromatography techniques. Both photocatalytic and photoelectrocatalytic activity were expressed using kinetic characteristics.

Future teaching room for school swimming : How can we improve the experience of swimming lessons for school classes in primary schools?

Yue Thomessen, Linn January 2022 (has links)
Sweden is a country surrounded by water and sea, where we have a strong tradition of water activities and thus also compulsory swimming lessons. According to a follow-up by the school board, seven percent of students in grade 6 cannot swim 200 meters. This means that approximately 8,300 students who left middle school in June could not swim before the summer holidays. The total number of people in who cannot swim in the society is an even higher number and a serious problem. It is time to highlight the issue of swimming skills and primary school swimming lessons.Swimming teachers and school teachers state that it is difficult to conduct swimming lessons for several reasons. There is lack of nearby swimming pools, time, place, finances, well-being and safety, to name a few. Discoveries about how the environment of the swimming pool speaks against elements of swimming lessons for both teachers and schoolchildren is a newer problem, which must be investigated in order to facilitate the work process of swimming teachers and increase participation and the ability to learn how to swim. How can we improve the experience of swimming lessons for larger school classes in primary schools? This degree work is in collaboration with school teachers, swimming teachers and the Swedish Life Safety Society, to explore and define the challenges and propose design solutions. The implementation consists of design methods in the form of research and interviews in the design process including idea generation, workshops, evaluation and several other methods.Three design proposals were evaluated, leading to a final holistic concept of a future swimming lesson facility and pool that is smaller, closer to residential areas and schools, adaptable to different swimming levels and activities, and promotes safety and well-being. The room includes a system for a semi-transparent drapery screening, to reduce distractions and divide different swimming activities that are going on at the same time. The environment is designed in colors and shapes that create clarity in the room movement flow and experience of spatiality. The dimensions could work within the building framework for a swimming pool and be implementable both in existing sports facility and future smaller facility.

Base Flow Recession Analysis for Streamflow and Spring Flow

Ghosh, Debapi 01 January 2015 (has links)
Base flow recession curve during a dry period is a distinct hydrologic signature of a watershed. The base flow recession analysis for both streamflow and spring flow has been extensively studied in the literature. Studies have shown that the recession behaviors during the early stage and the late stage are different in many watersheds. However, research on the transition from early stage to late stage is limited and the hydrologic control on the transition is not completely understood. In this dissertation, a novel cumulative regression analysis method is developed to identify the transition flow objectively for individual recession events in the well-studied Panola Mountain Research Watershed in Georgia, USA. The streamflow at the watershed outlet is identified when the streamflow at the perennial stream head approaches zero, i.e., flowing streams contract to perennial streams. The identified transition flows are then compared with observed flows when the flowing stream contracts to the perennial stream head. As evidenced by a correlation coefficient of 0.90, these two characteristics of streamflow are found to be highly correlated, suggesting a fundamental linkage between the transition of base flow recession from early to late stages and the drying up of ephemeral streams. At the early stage, the contraction of ephemeral streams mostly controls the recession behavior. At the late stage, perennial streams dominate the flowing streams and groundwater hydraulics governs the recession behavior. The ephemeral stream densities vary from arid regions to humid regions. Therefore, the characteristics of transition flow across the climate gradients are also tested in 40 watersheds. It is found that climate, which is represented by climate aridity index, is the dominant controlling factor on transition flows from early to late recession stages. Transition flows and long-term average base flows are highly correlated with a correlation coefficient of 0.82. Long-term average base flow and the transition flow of recession are base flow characteristics at two temporal scales, i.e., the long-term scale and the event scale during a recession period. This is a signature of the co-evolution of climate, vegetation, soil, and topography at the watershed scale. The characteristics of early and late recession are applied for quantifying human impacts on streamflow in agricultural watersheds with extensive groundwater pumping for irrigation. A recession model is developed to incorporate the impacts of human activities (such as groundwater pumping) and climate variability (such as evapotranspiration) on base flow recession. Groundwater pumping is estimated based on the change of observed base flow recession in watersheds in the High Plains Aquifer. The estimated groundwater pumping rate is found consistent compared with the observed data of groundwater uses for irrigation. Besides streamflow recession analysis, this dissertation also presents a novel spring recession model for Silver Springs in Florida by incorporating groundwater head, spring pool altitude, and net recharge into the existing Torricelli model. The results show that the effective springshed area has continuously declined since 1988. The net recharge has declined since the 1970s with a significant drop in 2002. Subsequent to 2002, the net recharge increased modestly but not to the levels prior to the 1990s. The decreases in effective springshed area and net recharge caused by changes in hydroclimatic conditions including rainfall and temperature, along with groundwater withdrawals, contribute to the declined spring flow.

Dynamic modelling of electricity arbitrage for single-family homes : Assessing the cost-effectiveness of implementing Energy Storage and Demand-Side Load Management.

Ali, Ahmed January 2023 (has links)
In the context of electricity, arbitrage trading involves taking advantage of existing price variations within electricity markets. The report conducted financial modelling for energy storage systems and demand-side load management for electricity arbitrage trading in single-family homes. The analysis included two different energy storage systems: a thermal energy storage system and a battery energy storage system. Additionally, electricity spot cost reduction was compared between electricity arbitrage trading and traditional energy efficiency measures such as air-to-water and ground-source heat pumps. The report's findings indicated that air-to-water and ground-source heat pumps emerged as the most economically viable choices for reducing electricity spot costs, irrespective of the studied electricity price area. The thermal energy storage system, employing an insulated hot water storage tank, ranked the third most efficient in achieving cost savings. The battery energy storage system, represented by a lithium home battery system, demonstrated the lowest rate of cost saving among the analyzed energy efficiency measures.  The financial modelling highlighted the economic potential for thermal energy storage systems, particularly in southern Sweden's electricity price areas SE3 and SE4. On the other hand, no economically viable options for battery energy storage systems were identified, regardless of the studied electricity price area. As a results, the report recommends utilizing thermal energy storage systems and implementing demand-side load management as strategies to hedge against future electricity price volatility.

Vo Thang, Thanh-Thuy 02 1900 (has links)
Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT) is known to decrease mortality rate and improve the quality of life for patients suffering from heart failure with left ventricular contraction dyssynchrony. However, it has been shown that 30% of patients do not respond to this therapy. Many studies have investigated the electrical or mechanical synchronism of contraction but few have studied the activation contraction coupling on a macroscopic level. The objective of this study is to observe the left ventricle’s electromechanical behaviour under biventricular stimulation. A software has been developed to analyse the data coming from non-contact mapping and blood pool SPECT for 12 dogs with heart failure. In order to observe the mechanical response following an electrical activation, we have registered 3D surfaces generated by the 2 modalities. Afterward, we defined the cardiac cycle limits, and we analyzed electrical signals as well as endocardial wall displacement curves where the onset of contraction was defined as a 10% inward radial displacement. Results show that both duration of left ventricular activation and QRS increase with pacing and that electromechanical delays are independent of stimulation mode (mean value 84,56 ± 7,19 ms). Finally, we observed that basolateral stimulation shows the best improvement for left ventricular function while presenting a long QRS duration.
