Ostracodes (Crustacea, Ostracoda) das praias rochosas de Santa Catarina, Brasil

Morais, Anderson Luiz Martins de January 2017 (has links)
Ostracoda are microcrustaceans with predominantly benthic habit which exhibit an abundant fossil record and constitute an important tool for paleoenvironmental and biostratigraphic studies. Research about recent ostracodes are extremely relevant to Paleomicrontology since many genera and even species from Cenozoic are still found nowadays. Several studies on Ostracoda from Brazil have focused on continental shelf and upper slope. The present work aims to identify and illustrate the species richness over a broad coastal area from southern Brazil, which coast is represented by numerous small sandy beaches guarded by rock promontories. Also, discuss zoo- and paleozoogeographic aspects, mainly related to autochthonous elements of this ostracofauna, and to introduce the discussion of compositional fidelity between living and dead ostracode assemblages, are among the subsequent objectives. Eighteen families, 33 genera and 46 species were identified. The family Hemicytheridae is the most representative with 18 species followed by Cytheruridae with six species. Two Xestoleberididae species herein identified are probably new taxa. A preliminary analysis showed low compositional fidelity with richness higher in death than in living assemblages. The living assemblage showed high dominance and low richness. This pattern is common for shallow marine zones such the infralittoral.

Negotiating Stones: Immovable Cultural Heritage Preservation in the Event of Armed Conflict

Clark, Danielle 17 October 2014 (has links)
This thesis proposes that cultural heritage preservation in the event of armed conflict is negotiated through four main frameworks: (1) a political framework of independent governments and UNESCO; (2) a legal framework of international conventions and agreements; (3) a civil framework including local communities and non-governmental organizations; and (4) an armed forces framework spanning military and militant groups. These four frameworks operate in conjunction with one another, at times in complementary or in contradictory ways. Given the intimate connection of immoveable cultural sites to the dynamics of cultural identity, it is assumed in this thesis that the intentional destruction of cultural heritage property is akin to the destruction of a group's cultural identity and to a greater extent a crucial component of ethnic cleansing in connection with social identity theory.

Reappropriating the Rundbogenstil: Supporting Community Revitalization Through the Adaptive Reuse of a Historic German Brewery in Cincinnati, Ohio

Hussein, Deqah 27 October 2016 (has links)
Cincinnati, Ohio is a city with many architecturally significant, yet decrepit, historic brewery buildings. Most of these structures are centralized in Over-the-Rhine (OTR) and the West End, two adjoining neighborhoods bordering Cincinnati’s Central Business District. Prohibition, in combination with anti-German sentiment from World War I, led to the decline of the brewery industry in Cincinnati in the beginning of the twentieth century. The decline left the formerly German concentrated OTR neighborhood vulnerable to economic instability. Within the past ten years, gentrification has threatened the southern regions of the OTR neighborhood, forcing low-income families to relocate to the West End. This has left the West End community socially and economically disconnected from OTR. The purpose of this thesis is to present an adaptive reuse proposal for the historic Rundbogenstil style Bellevue Brewing Company building, as a means to help socioeconomically regenerate and connect OTR and the West End neighborhoods.

Colors of the Western Mining Frontier: Painted Finishes in Virginia City, Montana

Geraghty, Kathryn 06 September 2017 (has links)
Virginia City once exemplified the cutting edge of culture and taste in the Rocky Mountain mining frontier. Weathering economic downturns, mining booms and busts, and the loss of the territorial capital to Helena, Virginia City survives today as a heritage tourism site with a substantial building stock from its period of significance, 1863-1875. However, the poor physical condition and interpretation of the town offers tourists an inauthentic experience. Without paint analysis, the Montana Heritage Commission, state-appointed caretakers of Virginia City cannot engage in rehabilitation. As of 2017, no published architectural finishes research exists that provides comparative case studies for the Anglo-American settlement of the American West between 1840-1880, for American industrial landscapes, or for vernacular architecture in Montana. This thesis offers a case study of five buildings to add to the body of scholarly architectural finishes research, provide rehabilitation recommendations, and provide a published, baseline study for future research.

Analýza kvalitativních ukazatelů kukuřičné siláže

BROŽ, Petr January 2018 (has links)
The Livestock production is in many ways a progressive discipline, which is characterized in that it blends several seemingly unrelated industries. One of the most important nutrition and feed livestock. With the development of the cultivation of maize (Zea mays), and the need for its preservation, it was necessary to develop a methodology proper ensiling. This practice establishes the correct principles for the production of high-quality, nutritional value and harmless silage. It already belongs to the selection of the optimal hybrid, suitable agronomic measures during cultivation, build a functional and efficient silage lines, selection and application of additives, proper layering and ramming masses and responsible handling of ready-made food, including a ration.

One of these species is the red-winged-tinamou (Rhynchotus rufescens), that has potential for production in captivity. The aim of the study was to determine genetic microsatellite polymorphisms in this species and other tinamous species. Sixteen microsatellite primer pairs were developed for the red-winged-tinamou from a genomic library enriched with microsatellites. In order to verify the cross amplification for the tinamous species we used 10 pairs of primers designed for ostriches (Struthio camelus) and 10 pairs developed for Tinamus major. From the 16 loci developed for red-winged-tinamou, 8 amplified in this species and only five amplified in other Tinamous. Genotyping was performed on 26 samples and estimates related to the percentage of polymorphic loci (50%), average number of alleles per locus (5.75), polymorphic information content (average 0.62) and expected genetic diversity (0.69). In order to test the transferability of the primer pairs developed for T. major, only one had a specific amplification in partridges, with observed rates of crossamplification of 100 and 70% for macuco (Tinamus solitarius) and the azulona (Tinamus tao), respectively. The amplifications in other tinamous were restricted to five microsatellite loci. With the use of computer programs and statistical analysis, we estimated genetic and phenotypic parameters of morphometric characteristics in red-winged-tinamou, in order to... The other side of the monument: memory, preservation, and the Battles of Franklin and Nashville

Bailey, Joe R. January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of History / Charles W. Sanders, Jr. / The thriving areas of development around the cities of Franklin and Nashville in Tennessee bear little evidence of the large battles that took place there during November and December, 1864. Pointing to modern development to explain the failed preservation of those battlefields, however, radically oversimplifies how those battlefields became relatively obscure. Instead, the major factor contributing to the lack of preservation of the Franklin and Nashville battlefields was a fractured collective memory of the two events; there was no unified narrative of the battles. For an extended period after the war, there was little effort to remember the Tennessee Campaign. Local citizens and veterans of the battles simply wanted to forget the horrific battles that haunted their memories. Furthermore, the United States government was not interested in saving the battlefields at Franklin and Nashville. Federal authorities, including the War Department and Congress, had grown tired of funding battlefields as national parks and could not be convinced that the two battlefields were worthy of preservation. Moreover, Southerners and Northerners remembered Franklin and Nashville in different ways, and historians mainly stressed Eastern Theater battles, failing to assign much significance to Franklin and Nashville. Throughout the 20th century, infrastructure development encroached on the battlefields and they continued to fade from public memory. By the end of the century, the battlefields were all but gone. However, to support tourism in the 21st century, Franklin’s preservationists and local leaders largely succeeded in recapturing the memory of their battle by reclaiming much of the battlefield space. In contrast, at Nashville, memory of that battle remains obscure. The city continues to focus its efforts on the future, providing little opportunity to reclaim either the battlefield or memory of the Battle of Nashville.

Verificou-se que o PS não influiu na fertilidade de jumentas (p = 0,6582) contudo a L,10 h pós-IA, interferiu positivamente na taxa de prenhez (p = 0,0097) elevando de 0% (G7 e G8) para 42,9% (G1 e G2) / The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the addition of autologous seminal plasma to frozen donkey semen, coupled uterine flushing after artificial insemination influence on fertility rates in jennies. Two experiments were conducted: experiment I, the parameters of sperm kinetics were analyzed by using computer assisted sperm analysis (CASA), analysis of plasma membrane integrity and acrosome (MPAI), lipid peroxidation (PERO) and reactive species content intracellular oxygen (ROS) by the technique of flow cytometry, 15 ejaculated 3 donkeys, diluted in INRA-96® (IC - INRA, IMV Technologies, France) -. Rota et al, (2012) or BotuCrio® (BC - Botupharma, Botucatu, Brazil), with and without addition of seminal plasma (SP) after thawing. The results were similar for CASA to 2 extenders (P> 0.05), however BC provided greater MPAI integrity beyond smaller PERO than the IC, resulting in lower EROS (P <0.05). The addition of PS reduced the parameters of CASA (P <0.05), but no action on the MPAI and Pero (P> 0.05). Experiment II, evaluated the influence of the addition of autologous SP in post-thaw and its association with uterine lavage (L) pos-IA, in the fertility jennies. 86 cycles of 33 jennies were used, divided into 8 groups: G1) BC + SP + Land G2) IC + SP + L, were tested by 14 cycles each; G3) BC+L and G4) IC+ L, were tested on each 11 cycles, all L were made 10 hours after AI; G5) BC + SP and G6) IC + SP were used in 8 cycles each, and the G7) BC and G8) IC were evaluated in 10 cycles each. It was found that the SP, had no effect on fertility jennies (p = 0.6582) however L 10 h post-IA, increased pregnancy rate (p = 0.0097) increasing from 0% (G7 and G8) to 42.9% (G1 and G2)
