Determinants of school success in disadvantaged environments

Mampuru, Marisane Edward 30 June 2003 (has links)
Learners in disadvantaged environments are less likely to do well at school. Yet some of the most successful schools operate in such environments. The purpose of this study was to establish the relative influence of various determinants of school success in disadvantaged environments. To this end literature study was done in two phases. The first resulted in a taxonomy of success factors, which was then used to guide the second in-depth phase. Thereafter an empirical study was done, involving qualitative field work at four successful schools in disadvantaged environments. Empirically it was discovered that there is no single most important success factor because all success factors are interrelated and interdependent. The over-arching success factor discovered in this study which was involvement of all stakeholders. / Education / M.Ed.

Educator participation in the implementation of a total quality management strategy : a case study

Tlhapi, Petrus Makganye 06 1900 (has links)
The principles of Total Quality Management (TQM), initially designed to effect continuous improvement in the business sector, have been successfully applied in educational settings. Hence, this study was undertaken to explore educator participation in the implementation of a TQM Strategy at selected academically underperforming secondary schools in the Moses Kotane Area to address shortfalls. A literature review on TQM provided a conceptual framework for the empirical inquiry. Special attention was given to the role of educators in TQM implementation. The empirical study used qualitative research methods to explore the use of TQM in fifteen schools selected by purposive sampling. Observation, document analysis and focus group interviews were used to gather data. The findings indicate that educators regard TQM as an improvement tool; however, they hold negative and positive views about TQM. Finally, recommendations were made to enhance the implementation of TQM in underperforming secondary schools in the Moses Kotane Area. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (Education Management)

The influence of total quality management on school improvement in secondary schools in the uThungulu District, Kwazulu-Natal

Sibeko, Sylvia Dolly 09 1900 (has links)
TQM has been identified as an approach that can be adopted to improve quality in business as well as in education. The main aim of this approach is to involve everybody in decision-making of the organization, in this case a school, with the purpose of achieving highest commitment from staff and customer satisfaction. TQM can be a way which can bring about changes in the education system. It is a philosophy with continuous improvement which can provide a set of practicable tools and techniques to meet the present and the future desires of any educational system. Therefore, this study sought to investigate the influence of TQM on school improvement in secondary schools in the Uthungulu District, Kwazulu-Natal. The questionnaires were handed to schools in the Uthungulu District which is made up of 5 circuits, namely, Umhlathuze Circuit, Umfolozi Circuit, Umlalazi Circuit, Mthonjaneni Circuit and Inkandla Circuit. The research concentrated mainly on School Management Teams (SMTs) and Post Level 1 educators (PL1 educators) from senior secondary schools (high schools). On the whole, respondents in the study area have shown a positive attitude towards understanding the significance of Total Quality Management principles in schools. The findings seem to suggest that everyone has a responsibility of encouraging implementation of TQM in schools. It is important to develop quality management systems, because without them, it is impossible to implement. The quality improvement teams should be empowered to manage themselves and provide programmes that will enable them to be more effective. The proposed model of the study provides information about basic elements and factors which need to be taken into cognisance during the TQM and implementation process. The model identifies the main principles of TQM with continuous improvement at the centre of them all. The main aim of implementing TQM in school should be continuous improvement. / Educational Management and Leadership / D. Ed. (Education Management)

Managing the implementation of education policies for quality education in public schools of Limpopo Province

Ndou, Nndwamato 10 1900 (has links)
South Africa is currently undergoing a process of change from a segregated education system to a more democratic system of education. The country is characterised by drastic policy shifts in the social, economic and political arenas. The problem that called for this research is that education managers at national, provincial, district, and circuit levels are facing challenges in the understanding, interpretation and implementation of education policies as they apply to support staff, educators, learners and their parents or guardians. Lack of access to and knowledge of acts, policies and procedures in educational leadership and management seem to impact negatively on the effective functioning of public schools in the provisioning of quality education in Limpopo province of South Africa. A qualitative research methodology coupled with ontology and epistemology theories were used in a phenomenological interpretive perspective. The rationale for choosing the qualitative approach was that the subject of this research study required data on the experiences, perceptions and views of the research participants. Three research instruments of data collection were employed, namely participant observation, document analysis and interviews. Purposive sampling was chosen to select the education managers as participants who were likely to be knowledgeable about and experienced in the phenomenon under study. Focus group and individual interviews were conducted with educators, education managers, and educator union representatives. I used content analysis method to catergorise data into themes. The findings in this study revealed that knowledge of the education policies is a pre-requisite for the implementation of such policies for quality education. It was evident that education managers have inadequate understanding of the formulation, interpretation and implementation of policies. Education managers had contrasting perceptions of education quality and divergent interpretationsof education policies. The deployment of circuit managers undermined the value of management qualifications, experience and expertise in such management posts. The absence of a policy enforcement agency and a lack of coordination within different levels of education management in the province have led to unresolved cases of misconduct and non-compliance with education policies. The researcher recommends that induction of newly appointed education managers, continuous training of the serving education managers, mentoring and monitoring of the implementation of education policies should receive priority for the provision of quality education in public schools. / Educational Leadership and Management / D. Stakeholders' perceptions of an institutional quality audit : a case study

Jacobsz, Johannes (Jannie) 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis briefly explores the quality phenomenon in higher education and more specifically in the university context. In addition, the experiences of stakeholders who participated in the first institutional quality audit at a merged university are explored and analysed. It is also argued that the world-wide quality phenomenon at universities, although sometimes politically driven and at times undertaken with hidden agendas, may eventually add value to a university‟ cycle of never-ending quality improvement and enhancement. University stakeholders who are either directly or indirectly involved in realising the university‟s vision and mission can provide invaluable feedback about their experience of a quality audit. Feedback by all stakeholders about a quality audit will assist the university to plan and prepare for the next cycle of quality audits. The research findings of this study indicated that a variety of differences exist in the perceptions of stakeholders that participated in the preparation and execution of the institutional quality audit. In some cases the differences may hold some limited risk for the university therefore some recommendations are also made in support of future audits. These and other recommendations emenating from the research findings will hopefully also contribute towards improved engagement between the stakeholders and members of the audit panel.

The initial argument which generated the compilation and interpretation of this data is that the purpose of the project is concerning more about social maintenance, avoiding violence in the city and also about the international and national political demands than about educative necessities and the improvement of the quality of education in Município de São Paulo. The studies about cultural and social reproduction made by Bourdieu were the base for understanding the social context related to the creation of the project and its influence in the school. The data about social inclusion and exclusion in São Paulo city was based on IBGE, Sistema EOL (Educação On-Line), SME and others documents made by SME and Secretaria Municipal de Planejamento. It had also been done the analysis of official texts referring to the development of the project mentioned, the conditions of its using as well as its legal terms. Ending the compilation of data, it had been analyzed activities related to the project in a school located in the East Area of São Paulo city. The understanding of that process was achieved by reading some important authors such as: Patto (1996; 2000) and Sampaio (1998) who approached subjects about the quality of education, social and educational inclusion/exclusion, and also about school success and failures. The results of this analysis showed that the project, Programa São Paulo é uma Escola , studied should not be used for any singular reason, just because it has its base on the SME political concepts which produces results according to the expectation, conception and necessity of each school unit / Esta dissertação constitui-se da análise do Programa São Paulo é uma Escola, desenvolvido pela Secretaria Municipal de Educação de São Paulo (SME), e teve como objetivo investigar os interesses e tendências políticas inerentes a sua criação, implantação e manutenção bem como sua aplicabilidade nas unidades escolares.

Frozza, Miguel de Oliveira January 2017 (has links)
The objective of this dissertation is to analyze the cost-student/year and the quality conditions in two rural schools of the state education network of Rio Grande do Sul. The schools that were visited are located in the rural area of Bento Gonçalves. The research consisted of a survey of the educational costs of schools, the cost-student/year, the costs and conditions of the municipal school transportation services and the conditions of the schools educational offer, in 2016. Contents on the development of the Right to Education in Brazil, on the normative order of the public financing of education and delimitations of rural education and education of the field were also included, through the analysis of federal and state educational legislation. There is also a brief discussion about the concept of quality in basic education and the necessary conditions for a School in the Field to offer an education with social quality. Cost-student/year is defined as a set of objectively calculated material and human resources. The cost items considered in the survey were: facilities (building and land), staff salaries (teaching and non-teaching staff); consumables; equipment and permanent materials; other inputs (water, electricity, telephone, internet, gas, third party services and maintenance); and school transportation. The data on personnel salaries were collected in the schools and on the website of the transparency portal of RS. Data on permanent material, consumables and other inputs were collected directly from the schools on visits and conversations with the management team Data on school transportation were collected during a visit to the Municipal Secretary of Education. The monetary values of educational costs were summed, calculated and compared through the unit cost-student/year. We analyzed the educational offer conditions of the schools and the costs and conditions of school transportation. The text is organized in three chapters. The first chapter presents a brief review of the Right to Education and Field Education in the federal and state legislation of Rio Grande do Sul. The second chapter presents a review of the financing of education in federal and state legislation. The third chapter deals with the field research, presenting the discussion about the concept of quality for the education of the field, methodological questions of the research, description of schools and school transport and analysis of the educational costs of schools and cost-student/year. The analysis of the collected data revealed that the surveyed schools identify themselves as Field Schools and are important to the organization, history and collective memory of the rural communities where they are located. Therefore, it was verified that the schools have partial conditions to offer a quality education, needing more support from the State Department of Education and 16th Regional Education Coordination. The research intends to contribute to the discussion on the issue of funding of the Basic Education of the Field and to the construction of the Cost Student Initial Quality and Cost Student Quality, foreseen in the National Plan of Education 2014-2024. Nursing Faculty's Integration of Quality and Safety Competencies as a Curricular Framework

Mereigh-Frederick, Florianne 01 January 2018 (has links)
The call to better prepare nurses in safety and quality performance resulted from the concern of the Institute of Medicine regarding egregious gaps and errors in U.S. hospitals that resulted in serious injuries and patient deaths. Quality and safety education for nursing (QSEN) competencies were set forth in 2005 to enhance nursing curricula and nursing students' preparation for practice; however, QSEN's integration and implementation have been gradual and inconsistent. This qualitative interpretive study was guided by Senge's principles of the learning organization and Benner's professional development model. Using face-to-face interviews, the perspectives of 9 full-time nursing faculty members at 2 private nursing colleges in the Northeast United States were obtained about QSEN integration into their curriculum. Data analysis employed the use of open in vivo coding, categorizing, and the formation of themes. The results indicated that QSEN integration was perceived as complex and daunting due to faculty's limited knowledge about QSEN, lack of adequate preparation to develop and employ instructional strategies, lack of adequate time to teach, and limited learning opportunities at clinical sites to develop competencies such as teamwork and collaboration and informatics. Meaningful reform in nursing education may occur as leaders engage faculty members in meaningful dialogue to better understand the complexity and challenges of QSEN integration, including faculty members' needs for successful implementation. Nursing students may then be better trained to understand the nature and consequences of human and system errors and appreciate higher standards of care that will result in a decrease in preventable injuries, medication errors, and patient deaths.
