Araújo Neto, Adalberto Coutinho de 08 May 2006 (has links)
This work rescues and analyzes the history of the unionism of the railway workers of the Sorocabana Railway during the decade of 1930. Memory in development and ruination : Tracing workers’ memories and futures on a transforming railway in Stockholm, Sweden

Aronsson, Viktor January 2023 (has links)
Research on post-industrial memory have recently brought to attention the role of workers’ collective memory in deindustrialised landscapes. However, the role of memory in continued and developed industries is a theme largely unexplored. Drawing on tangent research interests in absent-presences, spectrality, and more-than-representational theory, this thesis extends research on post-industrial memory by exploring collective memory in one such continued industry—the transformed and transforming commuter railway Roslagsbanan in Stockholm, Sweden. Through a case-study using autoethnography and mobile in-depth interviews with railway workers, the thesis shows how the past in representational and more-than-representational form provide affective encounters for workers in their everyday lives. Through encounters with remnants of the past, workers’ collective memory provides meaning to the present through materialities, stories, photographs, embodiments, places, and landscapes. However, as the landscape and workplace transform in what workers see as both development and ruination, the opportunity for memory to surface is challenged. With relevance for research on (post)industrial memory, the thesis shows how memory becomes an animating force in everyday work caught up in a liminality between development and ruination. Practiced in a continued industry, memory becomes a way to enliven the present.

Le charbon et l'escarbille : genèse et histoire du statut du personnel cheminot, de la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle à la veille de la Seconde Guerre mondiale / Genesis and history of the railway workers Staff Regulations, from the second half of the 19th century to the eve of the World War II

Maurice, Julie 18 June 2019 (has links)
The SNCF Staff Regulations was questioned since the 1980’s. Popular misconceptions, sometimes grotesques, are still widespread. Through the study of its history, from the second half of the 19th century to the eve of the World War II, and its remembrance, this PhD thesis proposes to deconstruct the railway workers Staff Regulations mythology. This study aims at understanding the moving reality of the rules concerning employment, working conditions and retirement, and highlighting the processual and contextual logics that define its long-term evolution. Discourses about and representations of these rules must be revisited through the prism of the railway workers’ identity too. This PhD thesis is based on historical records from railway companies and SNCF, public authorities, unions, legal and technical manuals, literature, press and personal testimonies.

Devauchelle, Romain 14 April 2023 (has links)
Abschied - Spionfieber - Schwarzmarkt - Schwerverletzte Umtausch - / Major logistical and tactical tool during the war, the railway network is devoted to the war effort and, both in Germany and France, is placed under the authority of the military command who manages and reorganises it, making use of regulatory stations, according to the war needs. From a railway perspective, waging war depends on civilians (railway workers, Red Cross) and soldiers (transports routes guardsmen, stations quartermasters generals), ready to step up and shoulder a massive workload and, for some of them, to risk their lives. Civilians (particularly refugees), soldiers (among which soldiers on leave, sick, wounded, repatriated critically wounded), and the vast majority of war equipment (ammunitions, weapons, food supply, mails, ...) need to be transported. Nothing, not even some of these types of travellers, is to jeopardize the war though. A war implying a greater human presence in the railway space, which, in turn, leads to spying, spymania, bombings, evacuations, constructions and destructions of railway facilities, curiosity, gatherings, groups phenomena, unruliness, prostitution, spreading of writings and words of protest, additional travels for the industry and agriculture, and black market. This railway network must be defended and maintained, while at the same time making sure railway workers and soldiers are disciplined and in good moral and physical conditions. Goals and wishes less and less in tune with the reality of the ground, made worse by a dragging war, always increasing the cost in human resources and railway equipments.
