Walking the path of debate of the function and the participation of literature in the social world, accessing the author's biography to understand the context of his writing and also the author’s intentions. In an exercise of producing a new perspective before a work already so studied, I we apprehend some of the provinces of finite meanings present in the narrative, articulating the experiences of Riobaldo Tatarana and his possible worlds to categories and sociological concepts. In addition to a theoretical discussion about the function of literature, I proposed, based on documentary analysis, to outline a profile of the author's understanding of his role as a writer, and then did the interpretive exercise of some themes present in his narrative Understood as finite provinces of meaning.

State of the Arts in Virtual Worlds

Molenaar, Johan January 2013 (has links)

Les républiques de François‐Vincent Raspail : entre mythes et réalités / The republics of François-Vincent Raspail : between myths and realities

Barbier, Jonathan 28 November 2016 (has links)
This thesis in contemporary history deals with the life of the republicain and chemist François-Vincent Raspail (1794-1878). Its objective is to understand that is the republicanisme in the XIXth century. To do so, throughout the case of Raspail, we attempt to capture the evolution of the republicain ideas at the individual level . In addition, Raspail has the particularity to combine political and scientific theories. Finally, the political myths surrounding Raspail are analyzed and deconstructed : the tireless fighter, the incorruptible man and the doctor to the poor.

An Investigation of the Career Realities and Occupational Concerns of Selected Professional Performing Musicians

Hill, Dennis R. (Dennis Roy) 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose was to investigate the career realities and occupational concerns of successful full-time performing instrumentalists. Four research problems were formulated; (1) the establishment of a demographic profile of musicians who perceived themselves successful; (2) the determination of the musicians' career realities; (3) the determination of the musicians' occupational concerns; and (4) a comparison of the relationship of the demographic profile to the career realities and occupational concerns. A pilot study was used to develop a questionnaire and an interview schedule. The sample for the main study was chosen by the questionnaire and consisted of twenty musicians, five each in the musical categories of jazz, classical, commercial and pop. To resolve research problem one, the questionnaire also collected general demographic data. Research problems two and three were fulfilled by an interview schedule based upon career realities and occupational concerns cited in previous sociological studies. The realities and concerns were either confirmed or refuted by each interviewee. The career realities were role conflict, career contingencies, musical labels, life style, hierarchies, audience relationships and environment. The occupational concerns were mobility, status, entrapment, personal contacts, dependency, security, competition, economic issues, working conditions, travel requirements, appearance, management control, auditions, maintenance of skills and training relevancy. The interviews were taped and transcribed by a court reporter and included in the text. An analysis of the interviews in relation to the demographic data fulfilled research problem four. Results showed that career contingencies, mobility and life style were positive influences for the sampled musicians. Also, a "hierarchy of expertise" appeared as the ultimate occupational hierarchy for the sampled musicians. Furthermore, a "hierarchy of dependency," based upon instrument played, affected the sampled musicians' attitudes toward their careers. It was concluded that performers who were devoting their full time to performance were more tolerant of imperfect career conditions than had been cited in previous studies .

Building the Tango

Utt, Melissa Gail 31 January 2009 (has links)
This is building the tango, a constructive investigation into the material consequences of dancing the tango. Building the tango is about the resurrection of passion and life, as well as passion for life, of which the reality is now. It also involves resurrecting passion and life on a site occupied by ghosts and ruins: Belle Isle in Richmond, Virginia. The constructive investigation of dancing the tango on Belle Isle includes reclaiming the scandal, individual movements and individuals moving together, opposition of body to body, opposition of bodies to space, placement of feet, love of the dance, and feeling the heat of the tango. Studying the material consequences of the tango requires that the structure, itself, is a tango. It is symbolic of a man's struggle for the possession of a woman. The structure is one part man, one part woman, every part dance. The constructive realities of the tango create a dance of materials, a dance of space and a dance of bodies within. / Master of Architecture

A History of Roma in the Public Sphere : The social construction of Roma in press and history textbooks after Ceausescu

Chiorean, Victor Emanuel January 2016 (has links)
This study addresses the post-revolutionary history of Roma in the Romanian public sphere by examining the social construction of this minority in press and history textbooks. The objective is to illuminate synchronic and diachronic structural patterns in public texts debating Roma in order to offer a deeper understanding of the Romanian xenophobia assuming that the public debate affects the status quo of Roma. Public texts represent fruitful channels of communication through which selective social realities par excellence, stocks of knowledge and typifications are proclaimed by different societal actors. The press possess a critical function whilst history textbooks a manipulative function advocating normative historical realties par excellence. The modi operandi utilized are quantitative, qualitative content- and critical discourse analysis, which are applied in the monitoring of approximately 6000 newspapers, 197 articles (1991-2012) and 6 textbooks (2008-2014). The results indicate that the media history of Roma resembled police investigations rather than conventional journalism. Manifest and latent stereotypifications have synchronically and diachronically formed uncritical and demonizing stocks of knowledge, whose societal truths sustained the othering of Roma in press and were depicted as a force behind the destruction of [“our”] national self-image. History textbooks have offered an inexistent stock of historical knowledge omitting, e.g. the slavery and deportations of Roma but highlighting ethnocentric perspectives, patriotism and other minorities.

A translation of good sense? Analysis of cultural markers in La Pierre du Royaume - Version pour européens et brésiliens de bon sens

Silva, Fabiana Gabriela da 13 August 2010 (has links)
A obra O Romance d\'A Pedra do Reino, do autor brasileiro Ariano Suassuna, é marcada pela cultura regional do Nordeste do Brasil. / The novel O Romance d\'A Pedra do Reino, by the Brazilian writer Ariano Suassuna, is characterized by the regional culture of the northeast of Brazil. When it is compared with the French linguistic-cultural context, the regional traits which are present in this work come to the fore and impose difficulties to any translators. Thus the rendering of this Brazilian novel to a different target language/culture is achieved with conflicts, since there are no exact equivalents in French which allow for the translation of this culturally-marked text, with a very particular syntax and with all the semantic nuances of the Portuguese language. The translator is then faced with the hard task of having to search for solutions which can solve the problems regarding the linguistic and cultural differences of the source text. The translator is also expected to have a profound knowledge of the source language and culture as well as of the social, historic and cultural context to which the literary work to be translated belongs. In this sense this research focusses on the translation of the culturally marked words by showing and discussing the solutions adopted by Idelette Muzart, the French translator who rendered Ariano Suassunas novel into French in 1998.

Flagrantes de cotidianos periféricos na literatura contemporânea de Brasil e Cabo Verde / Scenes of inner-city everyday life in contemporary Brazilian and Cape Verdean literatures

Ribeiro, Giselle Rodrigues 20 October 2015 (has links)
We have addressed the novels Guia afetivo da periferia, by the Brazilian writer Marcus Vinícius Faustini, and Marginais, by the Cape Verdean writer Evel Rocha, in order to study their protagonists, characters that live in poverty in urban areas. Our motivation was the need to understand how they are portrayed. We therefore delved into the investigation of their daily experiences, and from that we were able to identify some of their characteristics and attitudes. The investigation was based on theoretical texts that defend the importance of a hermeneutic of everyday life, pointing to it as a way of optimizing the recording of anonymous life experiences and legitimate social demands that are hidden at the hegemonic groups\' convenience. Such hermeneutic is based on the understanding that informal life experiences should be understood as leveraging human knowledge. We have analyzed five motifs that proved to be common to both novels: life, death, disease, work and territory. We found that the way both texts portray life in the inner cities are complementary, although, individually, they emphasize one-sided visions of the social reality they portray. We have also found that the novels innovate in the way they address some themes, such as the fight against tuberculosis and the option for self-employment, and at the same time somehow ratify positions that restrain human beings, for example when they link the notion of decency to having or not employment contract and poverty to criminality.

Paralelas cruzadas: propostas poéticas em arte móvel / -

Barbosa, Cássia Helena José 30 September 2016 (has links)
Crossed Parallels: poetic proposals in mobile art presents a theoretical-practical research that plunges into the creative potential of technological, portable devices, with distance network connection, within the context of ubiquitous, pervasive, and sentient computing. Themes and issues were taken up related to the poetic connection existing in between mobility, technology, and cyberculture, in special the mobile art, locative art, mixed realities, and augmented reality. Along the way, three artistic practices materialized: Crossed Parallels, hybrid project developed during artist residency in La Paternal Espacio y Proyecto (Buenos Aires / Argentina), Fundación Casa Tres Patios (Medellín / Colombia); São Paulo / Brazil, and involving mobile art, locative art, visual arts, performance and mixed realities. Body In (Visible) (creation of Cassia Aranha and Danilo Patzdorf contemplated in the Dance Edicts for Site Specific CCSP / 2015); FaceCode (a site specific artistic creation by Cassia Aranha and Luciana Mantovani; hybrid work of art involving visual arts, augmented reality, drama, and video performance, addressed in the Edicts of ProAC - Integrated Arts/ 2015, by the Government of the State of São Paulo - Secretary of Culture).
