X-ray Study of Strain, Composition, Elastic energy ans Atomic ordering in Ge islands on Si(001)

Malachias, Angelo 19 July 2005 (has links) (PDF)

I Remember...

Scott-Felder, Jessica 21 April 2009 (has links)
I Remember…, a series of drawings, is based on personal social experiences starting from the age of thirteen. This series begins with a memory of the first time I had to speak to a room full of people and the unexpected events of that followed. My own relationship with one of the primary subjects, the chair refers to memories of being raised in a home where certain furnishings were “off-limits.” Even more important is the presence of a cryptic narrative, fractured and dreamlike, similar to the style of writing created by Alain Robbe-Grillet. It has been a lifetime goal to create drawings that are interactive with the viewer. The baroque embellished chairs and piano provide a point of departure encouraging contemplative involvement by the viewer conceptually through imagery and physically through scale. Also, showing multiple viewpoints of the object simultaneously creates an atmosphere that is dreamlike and ghostly.

Mars, Ida, Rajala, Satu January 2015 (has links)
Background: Primary Healthcare Centers (PHC) are the first instance to seek care for patients who are not acutely ill. Children between 0-18 years account for 23 % of all doctor visits at PHC. These children rarely arrive by themselves; they are accompanied by parents or guardians. Thereby the health care professionals (HCP) need to relate to two individuals in the care situation. Parents are a resource for their child and they should be given the opportunity to participate with the child in caring situations. The care relation influences the outcome of the encounter between parent, child and HCP. Aim: To describe HCP' reflections about the encounters with parents seeking care for their children at the PHC. Method: A qualitative content analysis with inductive approach was used. The analyzed material consists of HCP's reflections derived from a prior research project regarding children's involvement. Results: Encountering parents who seek care for their children at PHC means that HCP's in these care situations balance between different perspectives and expectations. This balance includes reflections that are described as: To have beliefs about parent's perceptions and expectations; To encounter parents and children as a unit and unique individuals and To guide parents. Conclusion: The prerequisite for district nurses to create a caring relationship with parents and children in a care situation involves understanding and encountering parents and childrens perspectives. A caring relationship benefits the care situation, the child's health and parent's trust in the HCP's.

Idberg, Oscar January 2018 (has links)
A plunge has been made into the world of posthumanism to investigate its merits to be applied to the process that creates a photography. Several aspects of the posthuman have been identified that would allow for the creation of an alternative photographic process. Some of the major weaknesses of image creation are that the photographer has been granted dictatorial powers over what can be captured by the camera, how the picture only captures a limited view of the world, and the cameras inability to represent an everchanging nature. Through different methods such as a posthuman hike, texturing, image analysis, and a performative design the conventional photographic process were to be challenged. Later in the design stage reflective objects would prove to be a useful actor in challenging the problems that a Kandidatarbete i Medieteknik Oscar Idberg (osid15) Sida 2 av 46 photography faces. Mirror fragments were randomly placed in front of a camera to capture an unintentional part of the surroundings that otherwise would have not fit within the images restrictive frame. The design stage used several other methods that were less successful in their goals, they did however still play a critical role in leading up to the final method for the investigations product. The conclusion acknowledged that an alternative process for the creation of an image had been achieved, it did however not take the investigation far enough and could have better used the posthuman tools available. The human should not be excluded from the photographic process; however, it needs to be decentralized to allow other actors to take their place within the archiving world of photography.

Monitoring sub-surface storage of carbon dioxide

Cowton, Laurence Robert January 2017 (has links)
Since 1996, super-critical CO$_2$ has been injected at a rate of $\sim$0.85~Mt~yr$^{-1}$ into a pristine, saline aquifer at the Sleipner carbon capture and storage project. A suite of time-lapse, three-dimensional seismic reflection surveys have been acquired over the injection site. This suite includes a pre-injection survey acquired in 1994 and seven post-injection surveys acquired between 1999 and 2010. Nine consistently bright reflections within the reservoir, mapped on all post-injection surveys, are interpreted to be thin layers of CO$_2$ trapped beneath mudstone horizons. The areal extents of these CO$_2$ layers are observed to either increase or remain constant with time. However, volume flux of CO$_2$ into these layers has proven difficult to measure accurately. In addition, the complex planform of the shallowest layer, Layer 9, has proven challenging to explain using reservoir simulations. In this dissertation, the spatial distribution of CO$_2$ in Layer~9 is measured in three dimensions using a combination of seismic reflection amplitudes and changes in two-way travel time between time-lapse seismic reflection surveys. The CO$_2$ volume in this layer is shown to be growing at an increasing rate through time. To investigate CO$_2$ flow within Layer~9, a numerical gravity current model that accounts for topographic gradients is developed. This vertically-integrated model is computationally efficient, allowing it to be inverted to find reservoir properties that minimise differences between measured and modelled CO$_2$ distributions. The best-fitting reservoir permeability agrees with measured values from nearby wells. Rapid northward migration of CO$_2$ in Layer~9 is explained by a high permeability channel, inferred from spectral decomposition of the seismic reflection surveys. This numerical model is found to be capable of forecasting CO$_2$ flow by comparing models calibrated on early seismic reflection surveys to observed CO$_2$ distributions from later surveys. Numerical and analytical models are then used to assess the effect of the proximity of an impermeable base on the flow of a buoyant fluid, motivated by the variable thickness of the uppermost reservoir. Spatial gradients in the confinement of the reservoir are found to direct the flow of CO$_2$ when the current is of comparable thickness to the reservoir. Finally, CO$_2$ volume in the second shallowest layer, Layer~8, is measured using structural analysis and numerical modelling. CO$_2$ in Layer~8 is estimated to have reached the spill point of its structural trap by 2010. CO$_2$ flux into the upper two layers is now $\sim$40\% of total CO$_2$ flux injected at the base of the reservoir, and is increasing with time. This estimate is supported by observations of decreasing areal growth rate of the lower layers. The uppermost layers are therefore expected to contribute significantly to the total reservoir storage capacity in the future. CO$_2$ flow within Layer~9 beyond 2010 is forecast to be predominantly directed towards a topographic dome located $\sim$3~km north of the injection point. This dissertation shows that advances in determining the spatial distribution and flow of CO$_2$ in the sub-surface can be made by a combination of careful seismic interpretation and numerical flow modelling.

Stitched transmission lines for wearable RF devices

Daniel, Isaac H. January 2017 (has links)
With the rapid growth and use of wearable devices over the last decade, the advantages of using portable wearable devices are now been utilised for day to day activities. These wearable devices are designed to be flexible, low profile, light-weight and smoothly integrated into daily life. Wearable transmission lines are required to transport RF signals between various pieces of wearable communication equipment and to connect fabric based antennas to transmitters and receivers; the stitched transmission line is one of the hardware solutions developed to enhance the connectivity between these wearable devices. Textile manufacturing techniques that employ the use of sewing machines alongside conductive textile materials can be used to fabricate the stitched transmission line. In this thesis the feasibility of using a sewing machine in fabrication of a novel stitched transmission line for wearable devices using the idea of a braided coaxial cable have been examined. The sewing machine used is capable of a zig-zag stitch with approximate width and length within the range of 0-6 mm and 0-4mm respectively. The inner conductor and the tubular insulated layer of the stitched transmission lines were selected as RG 174, while the stitched shields were made up of copper wires and conductive threads from Light Stiches®. For shielding purpose, the structure is stitched onto a denim material with a conductive thread with the aid of a novel manufacturing technique using a standard hardware. The Scattering Parameters of the stitched transmission line were investigated with three different stitch angles 85°, 65° and 31° through simulation and experiments, with the results demonstrating that the stitched transmission line can work usefully and consistently from 0.04 to 4GHz. The extracted Scattering parameters indicated a decrease in DC loss with increased stitch angle and an increase in radiation loses, which tends to increase with increase in frequency. The proposed stitched transmission line makes a viable transmission line but a short stitch length is associated with larger losses through resistance. The DC losses observed are mainly influenced by the resistance of the conductive threads at lower frequencies while the radiation losses are influenced by the wider apertures related to the stitch angles and increase in frequency along the line. The performances of the stitched transmission line with different stitch patterns, when subjected to washing cycles and when bent through curved angles 90° and 180° were also investigated and results presented. Also, the sensitivity of the design to manufacturing tolerances was also considered. First the behaviour of the stitched transmission line with two different substrates Denim and Felt were investigated with the results indicating an insignificant increase in losses with the Denim material. Secondly, the sensitivity of the design with variations in cross section dimensions was investigated using numerical modelling techniques and the results showed that the impedance of the stitched transmission line increases when the cross sectional dimensions are decreased by 0.40mm and decreases when the cross sectional dimensions are increased by 0.40mm. Equally, repeatability of the stitched transmission line with three different stitch angles 85°, 65° and 31° were carried out. The results were seen to be consistent up to 2.5GHz, with slight deviations above that, which are mainly as a result of multiple reflections along the line resulting in loss ripples. The DC resistance of the stitched transmission line with three different stitch angles 85°, 65° and 31° corresponding to the number of stitches 60,90 and 162 were computed and a mathematical relationship was derived for computing the DC resistance of the stitch transmission line for any given number of stitches. The DC resistance computed results of 25.6Ω, 17.3Ω and 13.1Ω, for 31°, 65° and 85° stitch angles, indicated an increase in DC resistance of the stitch with decrease in stitch angle which gives rise to an increase in number of stitches. The transfer impedance of the stitched transmission line was also computed at low frequency (< 1GHz) to be ZT=(0.24+j1.09)Ω, with the result showing the effectiveness of the shield of the stitched transmission line at low frequency (< 1GHz).

Paul Ricoeur e a consciência como tarefa: o percurso da reflexão / Paul Ricoeur and the consciousness as a task: the reflections route

The main purpose of this study is to recognize what it considers to be the systematic dimension of Paul Ricoeurs thought based, as believed, on the conception of consciousness as a task. Likewise, it aims to understand the ontological and methodological assumptions of his thought. It also intends to demonstrate that pursuing a symbolism of multiple meanings, Ricoeurs concrete reflection integrates, from what he calls the gift of language, the philosophical logos, the episteme that was turned into science and the pre-philosophical richness of the symbol. His philosophical hermeneutics seeks the comprehension of ones self, of the reflection of ones self, through the interpretation applied to the signs and symbols of a consciousness that is not known from the beginning, but after the detour of its works and its actions. The reflection is the re-appropriation of what one becomes from what is said to us by the signs and symbols of culture and traditions. Paul Ricoeur is still presented as a critic of the immediate and narcissistic consciousness. He builds his intellectual journey in order to arbitrate the conflict of different interpretations that deal with the human symbolism. Finally, this work seeks to demonstrate that the philosopher proposes in fact a new route for reflection, through a démarche in two stages, in which the reflexive thought deprives itself of the immediacy of the false and common conscience, to reclaim later the deeper meanings expressed in our effort to exist and that are nourished by our desire of being. This is the historic and exemplary trajectory that this dissertation seeks to demonstrate.

The present study aim to analisy, based on metodology of life's histories, the process of my formation like environmental educator, had research's material the ways, steps of life's author, so can understand the increase and the learnings performed at every step. Supported by researchers on life's narratives and aware of your value in training processes, while possibility of self knowledge “self toward ” that provides to researcher a self discovery and about yourself.I found support in author like Josso (2004), Nóvoa (1988), Dias (2002), that discuss a work relevant with this metodology of research-formation in knowledge production sense from individual experiences . But it reveals characteristics of all social, political, economic and cultural context where is the narration subject. Thus it is the research metodology that structure in life's reflection, about actions and subject's options in some situations, finding experienced trajectories, clues to form comprehension as subject in the world . Besides, in colaboration sense with this study presented I show the ideas of Freire (2000; 2002 a, b, c; 2007; 2008), that he didn't dedicate to sudy narratives like research metodology, but understands that the subjects learning after self history. Then, Freire approaches of studied authors for this background study in perspective of life's narratives. The reflection research are consequences of study around this narratives and their extract like accquired learning by my existence.and my social insertion in several places that I worked and work. So it is a self biography study that found past experiences , pointers that explain the way I am and my realationship with the world, men and women. The result's work has a relevant faith of others teachers appropriate this metodology from research-formation as propose to deep comprehension about social pratices, discovery in faith history, values, conceptions ideas, principles that is the form in the world.
