Le cercle fermé dans l’oeuvre d'Elizabeth Gaskell / The « closed circle » in the works of Elizabeth Gaskell

Cheikel, Marie-Louise 27 June 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation is to analyse the concept of the « closed circle » as a community system in the works of Elizabeth Gaskell, and to show that the closing of social groups to the outside world, either by restriction or selection, represents both a process and a social space of rejection and reception. The paradox of this representation will be developed according to the concept of the closed circle as is described in Gaskell's novels, namely, a safe haven which is dependent on its own inaccessibility to the Other. This approach will enable one to study the building of community identity insofar as it is related to the recourse to exclusion as an attempt to preserve the group and as a political tool, both in isolated and distrustful communities such as Cranford, and in selective groups such as the Manchester manufacturers portrayed in Mary Barton or North and South. Indeed, Gaskell's works express the dual aspect of closed communities, namely, on the one hand, conformism to established social divisions, and, on the other hand, the establishment of alternative, microcosmic societies. We will particularly focus on the relationship between the closed circle and its members, which is often depicted as conflictual, while still viewing the circle as a privileged space of meeting and communication.

Marcel Pagnol, un « illustre méconnu » : réflexions sur les valeurs d'une œuvre littéraire et cinématographique / Marcel Pagnol, an "illustrious unrecognized" : thoughts on the values of his literary and cinematographic work

Brun, Marion 16 November 2017 (has links)
This thesis provides a new study on a writer usually neglected by scholarship : Marcel Pagnol. Taking his case as a starting point, this study aims to analyze the processes of legitimation and construction of canon. This research, building on sociology of literature, investigates the paradoxes of an “illustrious unrecognized” who pertains to official, classical and patrimonial literature but that nonetheless remains discredited by several matters. His fame and successes damage his symbolic capital; his regional particularism may prevent him from reaching universality. Between institutionalization and disrepute, Pagnol draws a medium path and carries out a medium art (middlebrow culture) which reconciles goodliterature and general public. In theater, he makes commercial theater, boulevard theater and some of the avant-garde come to an agreement, proving the permeability in dramatic field. In cinema, he combines art-house movies, literary script and neorealist avant-garde with popular melodramas. In literature, he emphasizes continuity between oral tradition and media innovation. This middlebrow author, this modern conservative balances regionalism against parisianisme, intellectualism against pragmatism, in a medium way that makes cinema and theater, theater and variety, tale and radio interact.

Massola, Gisele January 2015 (has links)
This thesis examines a complex cultural event, the Porto Alegre Book Fair, which has been annually held since 1955 under the auspices of Rio Grande do Sul Chamber of Literature in a partnership with the Ministry of Culture and Porto Alegre City Hall. The Fair comprises different kinds of cultural activities and involves several practices which have delineated cultural identities to the city, the Fair itself and its participants. It is possible to state that the event has been expanded in terms of physical space, number of participants, sponsors, organizers, managers, writers, booksellers and media, which besides publicizing the Fair, reinsure its commitment to sul-rio-grandense culture. A number of representations have been spread by the Fair and defined, positioned and taught people and local institutions ways of integrating the local culture. Together with this regionalist configuration, internationalizing practices have been more intensively institutionalized by the Fair with the aim of connecting this gaucho culture event to other events occurring in Latin America and in other continents as well. The study is focused on discursive strategies and representations associated with the production/management/creation of this cultural event as conveyed by Caderno da Feira, a supplement of the gaucho newspaper Zero Hora which is daily published along the days in which the Fair is held. This newspaper is one of the communication artifacts owned by Grupo RBS. The Fair, the supplement and the newspaper have been regarded as cultural pedagogies. The research corpus comprehended a large collection of 153 issues, out of which 85 issues published in October and November from 2005 to 2013 were examined. Issues of Zero Hora newspaper dating back to the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s were also examined because they contained important information about the event. Sections, cover headlines and reports were examined together with pictures and notes. The study has been grounded on Cultural Studies and has relied on theorizations by Albuquerque Jr. (2012), Canclini (2007), Debord (1997), Fischer (2012), Freitas (2007), Hall (1997a; 2005), Kellner (2006), Sarlo (1998), Silva (2012), Silveira (2000), Yúdice (2006), Woodward (2012) and Wortmann (2010), among others. The analyses have evidenced the multiple functions performed by the event: it celebrates the “book”, promotes its commercialization, highlights writers, reinforces the importance of reading, but it also adverts its promoters, sponsors and managers. Furthermore, it is associated with a number of other cultural events taking place in the city, such as Mercosur Biennial Art Exhibition, photography shows, literary workshops, lectures, musical performances, etc. All that turns this event into a multiple cultural spectacle which has become central to the city life, and not only while it is held. The study has also pointed out the way in which different facets of the sul-rio-grandense culture are highlighted, particularly considering the patron figure, comprehending from the cult of gauchism to the configuration of a larger, urban regionalism linked to literary canons.

The international cooperation is important for regional development and integration policies, as a way to offset the consequences of economic globalization. It is proposed the analysis of guidelines and the course of international cooperation, to implement convergent health policies for regional development of countries integrating MERCOSUR (Southern Common Market): Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. The theoretical basis for the study was based on the recognition, the modern theories of social justice, besides being utilized debates on concepts coming from international relations, public policy and social determinants of health. The main objective is to discuss, on one hand, what is international cooperation for the valorization of a public good, the health, which becames enabled nationally; and, on the other hand, why such cooperation can contribute to improve regional integration among countries. Four health cooperation initiatives were considered in South-South direction: the International Health Regulations (IHR), the Program of Action Mercosur Free of FMD (PAMA), the Centre Mercosur Health Systems (OMSS) and the Framework Convention of Tobacco Control (FCTC). The analysis of the subject suggests that cooperation has progressed in Mercosur in terms of initiatives, such as: (i) the institutionalization of regional right to health; and (ii) regional governance proposals on health care policy with the exercise of political convergence, and in the long run, the promotion of social justice in the countries studied.

Aldyr Schlee and the between place: the question of frontier in Uma Terra Só.

Silva, Angelise Fagundes da 03 March 2010 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This thesis analyses the short stories from Uma Terra Só (1984) and intends to verify how the motifs related to the bordering space are manifested in this book, considering them from the perspective of making of characters, fictional space, narrative voice and, mainly, of the subject matter. The culture, the language, the literature, the frontier man, the history of both sides of the border line which passes by Rio Grande do Sul state and Uruguay are elements which attest a limit, however, they do not demarcate it in a precise and clear-cut way. On the contrary, such aspects configure this territory as a cultural continuum . This work aims at studying this conception of the physical and social space as well as its evident relation with the aesthetic project which we find in the so called puebleros short stories by Aldyr Schlee.

Buscar apreender nos romances e nos filmes, todavia, estes registros particulares do mundo social fixa a compreensão do espaço literário e do cinematográfico como espaço social, ao mesmo tempo em que exige a interpretação das conexões entre estes espaços e as dinâmicas da vida social brasileira / In this research, we investigate four Brazilian fictional narratives that took actively for their arrangement the backland territory: Pedra Bonita (1938) and Cangaceiros (1953), by José Lins do Rego, and Deus e o diabo na terra do sol (1964) and O dragão da maldade contra o santo guerreiro (1969), by Glauber Rocha. We presuppose that the two novels and two films, even if produced in a historical gap of thirty-one years, when they elect the backland space, the narratives behave and congregate an inquietude with the direction that the peripheral modernity assumed in Brazil. Different styles of narrating that spatiality and its comprehension show the authors‟ different conceptions about the politics and aesthetics. Searching to apprehend in novels and movies, however, these private records, fix the literary and the cinematographic spaces comprehension as social space, while require the analysis about the connections between these spaces and the dynamics of Brazilian social life

Rocha, Karen Gomes da 24 August 2015 (has links)
Submitted by Ana Guimarães Pereira (agpereir@ucs.br) on 2015-12-15T11:29:51Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Karen Gomes da Rocha.pdf: 1905682 bytes, checksum: 15957982653c10d6aa5cc7d638920b0a (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2015-12-15T11:29:51Z (GMT). To seek answers to the question of what is the feminine, the analysis of masculine and feminine, among other combinatorial possibilities, enables a critical view through research and analysis, on breaking, or not, the mythical model of patriarchy. Therefore, it is analyzed the regional setting and its cultural interrelations in the novel, first, from theoretical assumptions regarding the region and regionality; then, combined with the perspective of feminist criticism, are used as subsidies the studies of Showalter (1994) and the anthropologists Bruner (1986) and Geertz (1989), in order to, by focusing on the female authorship text, that is, her expression, regarding the evaluation of family court and social power structures established fictionally, to unveil the conceptual structures and interpret the culture's fictional web of symbols; and, finally, basing the discussions on representation, identity and subjectivity with the assumptions of Chartier (2002) and Weedon (2003), reveal how female subjects are conceived.
