Study of gamma ray emission of supernova remnants interacting with molecular clouds and optimization of H.E.S.S. data analysis.Trichard, Cyril 22 September 2015 (has links)
The H.E.S.S. experiment is an array of Cherenkov telescopes, located in Namibia, observing the very high energy gamma rays from astrophysical sources. H.E.S.S. greatly increased our understanding of the very high energy non thermal universe. Since 2012, a fifth telescope was installed at the center of the array. This improvement increase the energy range and the sensitivity of the detector. The optimization of a multivariate analysis method, within the H.E.S.S. framework, is presented in this thesis. The Xeff analysis is improved by taking into account the observation conditions and by increasing the number of discriminating variables. The sensitivity of this analysis compared to standard analyses is demonstrated. Xeff is then used to analyze several sources of gamma rays. The effects of the focus impacting the H.E.S.S. II data are described. They are taken into account in the analysis and an optimization of the distance between the mirrors and the camera is presented. The study of the gamma emission from four candidates of molecular clouds and supernova remnant associations is presented. The H.E.S.S. data from G349.7+0.2, W51, the Tornado nebula and HESS J1745-303 is performed. The interpretation of their emission, using also Fermi-LAT data, leads to the estimation of the particles acceleration efficiency in these objects. The work described in this thesis led to the production of two internal notes in the H.E.S.S. collaboration, to several presentations in international conferences, and scientific publications.

January 2010 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: Frogs are particularly sensitive to changes in habitat, either by their low vagility and fidelity to breeding and foraging sites, or even by had a complex life cycle with aquatic and terrestrial phase. Such characteristics make them good models for studying issues related to habitat change, whether concerning the identification of patterns or inferences about processes associated with fragmentation and habitat loss or occupancy and colonization in disturbed areas. Within this context, this work main goal sought to determine the diversity and structure of his assemblage of amphibians in forest remnants semideciduous (FES) and compare it with that recorded in silvicultural deployments in the mid-west region of São Paulo (Chapter 3). Besides this, we sought to survey anurans in a protected area (Conservation Unit), in order to approach the species composition in this region, before the fragmentation process (Chapter 1), and we tried to elucidate the spatial distribution of the species found in this type of forest formation (FES) and its possible biogeographical relationship with assemblages present in adjacent types of vegetation (Chapter 2). From the monthly survey of the species in the field for nine months consecutively, including the season of greatest activity for the group, and using different and complementary methodologies (pitfall traps and survey at breeding sites) were determined the abundance and richness of frogs in three comparable areas of deployment forestry (eucalyptus forestry) and three remaining forest (remnants of FES), and the only major conservation unit within a radius of 150 km. For comparison of data abundance and diversity, between forestry and forest remnants, were used univariate analysis of variance (ANOVA) with each data sets, and also descriptive techniques such as non-metric multidimentional scaling (NMDS), clustering (UPGMA) and similarity analysis... Desequilíbrio de Ligação e Blocos de Haplótipos Determinados pela Análise de 250K SNPs em Três Remanescentes de Quilombos / Linkage Disequilibrium and Haplotype Blocks Determined by the Analysis of 250K SNPs in Three Quilombo Remnants CommunitiesEdilene Santos de Andrade 20 September 2013 (has links)
The non-random association between alleles of different loci characterizes what is called linkage disequilibrium (LD) between them. The LD extent in human populations can be influenced by many factors, such as recombination rate, demographic features (age, size and growth rate) and evolutionary events (genetic drift, founder effects, population bottlenecks, mutation, selection and gene flow). Therefore, knowledge of the LD patterns provides data that assists in describing the evolutionary and demographic events experienced by populations. The aim of this study was to describe the LD patterns of four Brazilian populations and correlate these patterns with their respective demographic histories, since these populations have experienced some of the evolutionary events that produce or retard the LD decrease, such as foundation by few individuals, admixture at the founding moment and subsequent isolation. Samples from three quilombo remnants populations of the Piauí State, Gaucinha (GAU, n = 14), Mimbó (MIB, n = 15) and Sítio Velho (STV, n = 15) and the urban population of Teresina, Piauí (TES, n = 15), and seven population samples from the HapMap Project (CEU, CHB, JPT, ASW, LWK, MKK, YRI, all with n = 15) were analyzed. More than 250 thousand SNPs (Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms) were genotyped using the GeneChip ® Human Mapping 250K Nsp Array I - Affymetrix ® in the samples of the four Brazilian populations. Raw data of the HapMap population samples for this array were obtained from the HapMap homepage. Genotypes for all samples were determined by CRLMM algorithm after comparison with the BRLMM algorithm. LD analyzes and determination of haplotype blocks were performed using the Haploview software. Considering the number of haplotype blocks detected in each population, a consistent pattern was observed for all autosomes. The European population (CEU) and the two Asian populations (CHB and JPT) of the HapMap showed the highest numbers of blocks, while the lowest numbers were observed in the GAU and MIB quilombos and in the TES population. The African populations, LWK, MKK and YRI, and the African-American ASW exhibited intermediate values and the African-Brazilian population STV, presented a number of blocks smaller than that observed for CEU, CHB and JPT. The great African contribution in the GAU and MIB quilombos may explain the lower LD observed in these communities. On the other hand, the lower LD in TES is probably due to its foundation that involved a larger number of individuals and was followed by a fast growth. A possible explanation for the higher LD observed in STV, compared to other quilombos, consists in its particular demographic history: this community experienced admixture at the time of its foundation, which was followed by slow growth and low differentiation. Thus, it was shown how the demographic events of each population influence their respective LD patterns.

The formation to quilombos was one of the means of resistance to slave system established in Colony Portuguese American citizen ship. It represented the contradictory in that society, which caused conflict. It concerned about communities of captives escaped, that there were in almost all colonnede areas and varied in size and form of organization. From the legal point of view, the slave labor came to the end in 1988, but full of contradictions. The Act Free Aurea not guaranted to better living conditions, since the discriminatory speech against blacks remains, added to exclusion in the labor market and land when they lived. The quilombos, in turn, after slavery, fell into oblinon by the public administration, its existence was denied. Only at the end of 1970, when the reorganization civil society, with the collapse of the dictatorial period, that quilombos return to the political scene. Its called the need for recognition of this group by the state and legalization of land where they live. In 1988, it is an important achievement by the Federal Constitution on the final possession of the land owned by the quilombos that are occupying. The Statute of Racial Equality (2000) among their advances for the black population, reinforces the right of land ownership to quilombos. Following a major way, the 4887 Decree was approved in 2003, in order to regulate what was defined in the Magna Charta. The two main pillars of support of this Decree are identity and territory. The racial identity, in this study, will be considered from the perspective of a group that belongs to a certain social class, but also within cultural difference. On the territory is highly important to bring this category to the debate on quilombos, since this is the ground where the story is built, the identity of these populations. Finally, it is necessary to consider the date obtained from the empirical research – interviews and observation conducted in the community of Barro preto city of Santa Maria de Itabira / MG, establishing relationship with the theorical assumptions made by studying literature performed.

The empirical research of this dissertation was conducted in an archeological site in the Boqueirão community, in Vila Bela da Santíssima Trindade (state of Mato Grosso, Brazil), in the systemic context between 2008 and 2011. Throughout this work, we have aimed to perceive cultural processes in this quilombo remnant area, related to certain landscape elements, especially trees. We have considered not only the important role of plants in the Afro-Brazilian religions, but their distinctive and mnemonic potential as well, able to bring up reminiscences in this afro-descendant group and its memory. Data collected in the systemic context were used for the interpretation of the archeological site, in order to broaden the diachronic variation of the analysis. Parallel to the data collection in Boqueirão, we have conducted field work in five Afro-Brazilian \"terreiros\" (places of worship), four in the Metropolitan Area of São Paulo and one in Cuiabá countryside (in the state of Mato Grosso). We were able to trace back to part of the family background of some members of this community, in addition to part of their ancient past, for some of the data obtained led to their African roots. This dissertation also aims to contribute to the general improvement of African and Afro-Brazilian studies in the field of Archaeology. We conclude that there are trees which bear a symbolic significance to the way of thinking of the community, both inside the studied \"terreiros\", in accordance with the Afro-Brazilian religion literature, and also in the Boqueirão Quilombo. We also conclude that anthropological and sociological studies about the black population in Brazil should be taken more into consideration by Archaeology, and, above all, by the Archaeology of the African Diaspora, one the branches of this field of study upon which our studies were based.

Participaram do estudo Remanescentes
Nazaré -TO.
The Indiscriminate use of drugs has become a world leading public health problems ,
especially for the old , for being the most medicalized age population. The goal of this
study was to identify the dimensions that influence the rational use of drugs in an elder
Quilombolas remnants population through an educative approach based on Freire’s
thoughts, in the community of Malhadinha located in the city of Brejinho de Nazaré –
Tocantins. A Descriptive Study, of quantitative and qualitative nature, this verification
occured through semi-structured interviews and a sensibilization as required, nominated
by educative intervention. Participated in the study Quilombolas remnants over 60
years, academics from the Malhadinha pole of Universidade da Maturidade of the
Universidade Federal do Tocantins in the city of Brejinho de Nazaré – TO. The results
showed high elderly rate in the illiterate group (46.2%) and 1-4 years of education
(34.6%). It is evident that the act of self-medication is relevant among the participants as
well as the careless treatment, the use of non-prescription drugs and the improper drug
disposal. It may also happen prescription leavers and the drug use indicated by family
and friends. Supports that the storage and drugs disposal occurs inappropriately.
Noteworthy is the search of information through the TV and difficult acces to health care.
As for the drugs reported by the participants, 21.21% are included in the Beers-Fick
Criteria. We conclude that the booklet proposed in this research will contribute to build a
more prepared society to critically face the linked information on health care and
medicines. Corroborating to the development of healthy habits, encouraging the rational
drug use, without submerging the essence of Quilombola culture, not only respecting
differences, but adopting the Paulo Freire’s concepts, comprising as a cultural
enrichment in which everyone can learn and develop.

This study presents a discussion on the need to find solutions to overcome the inquisitorialism in Brazil and the consequent strengthening of the accusatory system, adopted by the Federal Constitution of 1988, in relation to the unfinished transition of the Democratic State (understood as a synthesis concept among civil, political and social rights). The sustained argument is that there is a direct relationship between transformation of states, the historical process of acquiring rights by the population, the constitutionalism and the criminal justice system. Firstly, the study presents an analysis of the Western model seeking to understand how the above relationship occurred in Western in general terms. Subsequently, the second chapter presents the specific case of Brazil, and investigate, in the light of a sociological and constitutional perspective, the relationship between the historical process of rights achievement and the trajectory of the criminal justice system in the country – differentiating it from the Western model and making room for a wider definition of the accusatory system that involves the synthesis of the three pillars of the Democratic State. The accusatory system thus comes to be seen as a reflection of the Democratic State. Finally, the third chapter presents the shortcomings of the democratic rule of law that seem to reflect the difficulties encountered in the criminal court system, including the problems of overcoming inquisitorial remnants. Therefore, one intends to present solutions, particularly qualitative, for the improvement of the accusatory system in Brazil in its civil, political and social spheres.

In high energy astrophysics, several questions are still open and amongst them is the origin of Galactic cosmic rays. The first observational evidence of accelerated particles has only been revealed twenty years ago. Since then, supernova remnants, pulsars and their nebulae are known to efficiently accelerate particles but several questions still hold. In particular, evidence of accelerated protons (which consist on 90% of the cosmic-ray spectrum) is still elusive and several gamma-ray sources have unknown origin. Non-thermal emissions produced in Galactic accelerators provide insights about the nature of the accelerated particles. In particular, while radio and X-ray observations indicate the presence of accelerated electrons, gamma rays can be produced by both electrons and protons (or nuclei in general) but it may be difficult to assess the origin of the emission. The technical part of this thesis concerns the study of the impact on the reconstructed H.E.S.S. data when using atmospheric profiles measured with a lidar instead of a standard atmospheric model currently used. Very high energy gamma rays propagate into the atmosphere before reaching Cherenkov Telescopes and thus, the accuracy of our measurements depends on our understanding of the atmospheric composition. Using run-wise simulations based on lidar data, we study the impact on the instrument response functions and we analyse data to quantify the effect on the spectral reconstruction. The first scientific goal of this thesis is to understand the gamma-ray emission from two supernova remnants (G326.3-1.8 et RX J1713-3946) through detailed spectro-morphological analyses. The analysis of the composite supernova remnant G326.3-1.8, with Fermi-LAT data, has led to two major results: a new evidence of accelerated protons and the first morphological and spectral separation in gamma rays of two nested components. The study of RX J1713-3946, with H.E.S.S. data and using the Ctools package, confirms a significant gamma-ray extension beyond the X-ray emitting shell but its origin remains unclear. The second part of this thesis aims to constrain the nature of the unidentified TeV sources revealed in the H.E.S.S. Galactic Plane Survey. We thus present a generic code, based on a multi-wavelength approach, to find counterparts and estimate physical parameters like the radio spectral index and the mean magnetic field. We apply this code on five unidentified TeV sources and we put constraints on their nature. In particular, we present two high-confusion cases, for which the TeV emission is probably due to the contribution from different components, emphasizing the importance of multi-wavelength data to understand the origin of the gamma-ray emission.

The Utility of Linear Riparian Rainforest for Vertebrates on the Atherton and Evelyn Tablelands, North QueenslandHausmann, Franziska, n/a January 2004 (has links)
This study investigated the utility to vertebrates of upland linear riparian rainforest fragments on the Atherton and Evelyn Tablelands in the Australian Wet Tropics region, north Queensland. Similar linear fragments were selected, that varied in forest age and their connectivity to large areas of continuous forest:- (connected primary (N=6), isolated primary (N=5), connected secondary (N=6) and isolated secondary (N=7)). Primary sites had either never been cleared or only subject to selective logging, while secondary forest had been completely cleared and allowed to regenerate for at least 30 years. These linear fragments were contrasted with riparian sites within continuous forest sites (N=6 to 7), which were situated in State Forest or National Parks, and sites within the cleared matrix (pasture, N=6). Vertebrates surveyed were birds, ground-dwelling mammals and reptiles, particularly leaf-litter skinks. All surveys were conducted between September and December in 2001 and/or 2000. Chapter 2 investigates the effects of forest age, isolation and structural vegetation features on bird assemblages within linear riparian fragments of rainforest. Bird surveys and structural vegetation assessments were conducted within connected and isolated primary and secondary linear fragments, and compared with those of continuous forest habitat (N=6) and pasture. There were strong effects of forest age; all three types of primary rainforest had higher values than secondary rainforest for most measured attributes of vegetation structure (including canopy height and cover; and frequency of large-diameter trees, lianes, epiphytes, strangler figs; and woody debris), but lower frequencies of tree ferns and thorny scramblers. Sites within primary rainforest also had a greater frequency of many bird species across different guilds of habitat, feeding and movement. Assemblages of rainforest-dependent birds showed an effect of isolation, although its strength was less than that of forest age. Isolated fragments of primary rainforest differed significantly from continuous primary rainforest in their rainforest-dependent bird species assemblages (and had lower species richness), and isolated fragments of secondary rainforest differed from those that were connected. There was a significant association between the species composition of rainforest birds and some measured vegetation parameters across all sites, but not within primary or secondary sites. Vegetation differences did not explain the lowered frequency of several species in isolated fragments. Limited dispersal seems unlikely to be a main cause, and causal processes probably vary among species. Specialist rainforest species endemic to the Wet Tropics region showed stronger responses to present-day rainforest age and fragmentation than those not endemic. Variation in nest depredation levels associated with rainforest fragmentation (edge effects) is examined in Chapter 3. Artificial nests were placed in the forest understorey at seven edge sites where continuous forest adjoined pasture, seven interiors (about one kilometre from the edge), and six primary linear riparian forest remnants (50-100 m wide) that were connected to continuous forest. Four nest types were compared, representing different combinations of two factors; height (ground, shrub) and shape (open, domed). At each site, four nests of each type, containing one quail egg and two model plasticine eggs, were interspersed about 15 m apart within a 160 m transect. Predators were identified from marks on the plasticine eggs. The overall depredation rate was 66.5% of 320 nests' contents damaged over a three-day period. Large rodents, especially the rat Uromys caudimaculatus, and birds, especially the spotted catbird Ailuroedus melanotis, were the main predators. Mammals comprised 56.5% and birds 31.0% of identified predators, with 12.5% of unknown identity. The depredation rate did not vary among site-types, or between open and domed nests, and there were no statistically significant interactions. Nest height strongly affected depredation rates by particular types of predator; depredation rates by mammals were highest at ground nests, whereas attacks by birds were most frequent at shrub nests. These effects counterbalanced so that overall there was little net effect of nest height. Mammals accounted for 78.4% of depredated ground nests and birds for at least 47.4% of shrub nests (and possibly up to 70.1%). The main predators were species characteristic of rainforest, rather than habitat generalists, open-country or edge specialists. For birds that nest in the tropical rainforest understorey of the study region, it is unlikely that edges and linear remnants presently function as ecological population sinks due to mortality associated with increased nest depredation. The use of linear riparian remnants by small ground-dwelling mammals and reptiles (mainly leaf litter skinks), is reported in Chapter 4. Site types were continuous rainforest, connected and isolated linear fragments of both uncleared primary rainforest and secondary regrowth rainforest. Mammals were also surveyed in pasture sites. Neither reptile species richness nor abundance varied significantly among site types. Although mammal species richness varied significantly between site types, with isolated primary sites containing highest species richness, overall mammal abundance did not differ significantly among site types. Pasture sites differed significantly from all rainforest sites in their mammal species composition, and were dominated by the introduced house mouse (Mus musculus). This species was absent from all rainforest sites, which were characterised by moderate abundances of bush rat/Cape York rat Rattus fuscipes/leucopus, fawn-footed melomys Melomys cervinipes and giant white-tailed rat Uromys caudimaculatus. None of these species varied significantly in abundance among site types, although the giant white-tailed rat showed a trend (P=0.09) for reduced abundance in isolated secondary sites. A single reptile species, the prickly forest skink Gnypetoscincus queenslandiae, occurred in sufficient numbers for individual analysis, and its abundance varied significantly among the forested site types, being less abundant in all linear fragments than in continuous forest sites. The utility of linear riparian rainforest for vertebrates appears to be species-specific and involves many factors. However, overall, species endemic to the Wet Tropics (which are hence of the highest conservation significance) appear to be the most sensitive to fragmentation. These species were most likely to show altered abundances or frequencies of occurrence due to isolation, forest age, and habitat linearity. The ecology of species within this group warrants further investigation within fragmented and non-fragmented regions of the Tablelands. For many other vertebrates examined in this study, there appears to be sufficient functional connectedness between remnants on the Tablelands to minimise the effects of fragmentation. Nevertheless, the lower density of many of these species in pasture may indicate that their long-term persistence within the fragmented rainforest areas could benefit from the maintenance or establishment of habitat linkages. Certainly, if the current rainforest vegetation cover were further reduced, or if the land use in the matrix became more intensive, the establishment of specific habitat linkages could become more important as existing dispersal routes could be lost. It also appears that nest depredation levels are unlikely to limit the value of linear rainforest remnants and other small rainforest remnants as breeding habitat for birds (at least for understorey-nesting species), relative to more intact rainforest, in the study region.

Wide Field Aperture Synthesis Radio AstronomyBock, Douglas Carl-Johan January 1998 (has links)
This thesis is focussed on the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST), reporting on two primary areas of investigation. Firstly, it describes the recent upgrade of the MOST to perform an imaging survey of the southern sky. Secondly, it presents a MOST survey of the Vela supernova remnant and follow-up multiwavelength studies. The MOST Wide Field upgrade is the most significant instrumental upgrade of the telescope since observations began in 1981. It has made possible the nightly observation of fields with area ~5 square degrees, while retaining the operating frequency of 843 MHz and the pre-existing sensitivity to point sources and extended structure. The MOST will now be used to make a sensitive (rms approximately 1 mJy/beam) imaging survey of the sky south of declination -30°. This survey consists of two components: an extragalactic survey, which will begin in the south polar region, and a Galactic survey of latitudes |b| < 10°. These are expected to take about ten years. The upgrade has necessitated the installation of 352 new preamplifiers and phasing circuits which are controlled by 88 distributed microcontrollers, networked using optic fibre. The thesis documents the upgrade and describes the new systems, including associated testing, installation and commissioning. The thesis continues by presenting a new high-resolution radio continuum survey of the Vela supernova remnant (SNR), made with the MOST before the completion of the Wide Field upgrade. This remnant is the closest and one of the brightest SNRs. The contrast between the structures in the central pulsar-powered nebula and the synchrotron radiation shell allows the remnant to be identified morphologically as a member of the composite class. The data are the first of a composite remnant at spatial scales comparable with those available for the Cygnus Loop and the Crab Nebula, and make possible a comparison of radio, optical and soft X-ray emission from the resolved shell filaments. The survey covers an area of 50 square degrees at a resolution of 43" x 60", while imaging structures on scales up to 30'. It has been used for comparison with Wide Field observations to evaluate the performance of the upgraded MOST. The central plerion of the Vela SNR (Vela X) contains a network of complex filamentary structures. The validity of the imaging of these filaments has been confirmed with Very Large Array (VLA) observations at 1.4 GHz. Unlike the situation in the Crab Nebula, the filaments are not well correlated with H-alpha emission. Within a few parsec of the Vela pulsar the emission is much more complex than previously seen: both very sharp edges and more diffuse emission are present. It has been postulated that one of the brightest filaments in Vela X is associated with the X-ray feature (called a `jet') which appears to be emanating from the region of the pulsar. However, an analysis of the MOST and VLA data shows that this radio filament has a flat spectral index similar to another more distant filament within the plerion, indicating that it is probably unrelated to the X-ray feature.
