This work reports a teacher’s research about the aesthetic experience in his professional practice, which presents an approach about experience, education and art education using the pair experience/sense suggested by Jorge Larrosa Bondía. On the investigation route, the teacher has created a research group with some of his High School students from the public school Professora Heloiza Therezinha Murbach Lacava, in Santa Bárbara d’Oeste, São Paulo state. With the theoretical support from John Dewey, Jorge Larrosa Bondía and Jacques Rancière, the text presented on this thesis articulates three voices: the one from the thinkers and philosophers, another one from the art teacher/researcher and a last one from the students taking part in the research group during their reflection processes and this theme’s investigation, interrelating the main ideas being developed in the texts A função da Arte 1 from Eduardo Galeano and A Onda from Susy Lee, mentioned as metaphors because of their poetic strength, vesting matter in them and feeding them with senses. Among the experience lived by the teacher and the students from the research group, conditions are developed to comment on some considerations which contribute to the understanding of the concepts of master’s ignorance and emancipation presented by Rancière.

Academic knowledge creation as a spatio-temporal process:the case of international research groups in Finland

Hautala, J. (Johanna) 30 November 2011 (has links)
Abstract The thesis is an investigation into the spatio-temporal knowledge creation of international research groups. Knowledge is spatial: it is created in geographical places, shared in communicative space and analyzed in the cognitive space of the mind. Knowledge is a process that evolves in the interactions and interpretations of people. It is created in the tempo of working days that is experienced as flowing or disrupted time. These dimensions of spaces and times come together as the contexts of knowledge creation. In current internationalizing universities, work groups increasingly consist of members from different countries and with varying professional backgrounds. In their endeavor to create globally renowned results, the international research groups are both challenged and enabled by their diversity. Multiple views can benefit the creation of novelty, but reaching a common understanding in a diverse group might not be easy. Current research calls for a more detailed understanding of the processes and contexts of knowledge creation in international groups. The empirical part of the thesis is comprised of two case study compilations. Case A focuses on the University of Oulu, with its foreign employees and three international research groups from the humanist, scientific and technical fields. Four international research groups from the fields of science and technology, led by top foreign professors and funded by the Finland Distinguished Professor Programme, form case B. Altogether, the main materials include 37 interviews, 123 weekly diaries, observation and a survey (67 replies). The main methods applied are mental mapping, discourse analysis and content analysis. According to the results, knowledge creation is a complex spatio-temporal process that often leads to unexpected results. Processes of interaction and interpretation enable the group to reach cognitive friction. This fertile ground of knowledge creation can be reached when a group possesses enough common understanding and enough diversity in their individual interpretations. Humanist, scientific and technical knowledges are created in multiple contexts through group-specific discourses. Knowledge itself is a spatio-temporal process of stages, flows and disruptions towards the not-yet-known. Knowledge is inseparable from individuals, groups, the processes and contexts of creation.

Wästberg, Anette, Perlestam, Anna Å January 2008 (has links)
During these two last terms we took part in a research group on history teaching in a multi-cultural environment at a compulsory school. The research group started when the school in question had recently taken on a large number of pupils of a foreign background. This thesis has two purposes, the first of which is to show the teachers’ view on the division of rolls within the aforementioned research group. The division referred to is principally that between the researchers and the teachers, not that between the teachers. The other purpose is to see how the teachers perceived the influence of participating in the research group, the focus being on history teaching in a multi-cultural environment. Research groups in the school world are quite new phenomena. In the research group theoreticians and practitioners meet about a mutual problem, defined by the practitioners. In order for the research group to meet on an equal footing, the researchers have to maintain a consciously low profile. Otherwise they run the risk of repeating a worn pattern where the researchers act as leaders and the teachers become the participants performing their allocated tasks. Even though the researchers’ low profile may mean the work process taking a longer time, chances are that results more relevant to the teachers and researchers are achieved. The teachers in this particular research group feel the researchers in the group did keep a low profile. Their impression is that everyone who participated took part on equal conditions, regardless of their profession and earlier experiences. Research today within the area of history didactics mainly focuses on how schools might change their history teaching based on the pupils sitting in front of the teacher, and on whose history one is actually trying to convey. This research shows that the teachers feel their participation in the research group did provoke ideas and thoughts on how to change the lessons. While it is not completely unproblematic, the teachers are trying to find new ways of making the history lessons relate to everyone in the classroom. Central conceptions for the research group and for this thesis have been identity, history awareness, culture and culture heritance. These conceptions have been discussed from a didactic perspective.

In this way, the objectives were to promote an intervention in a reflection group about work and health with workers from an automobile industry and to analyze the health-disease process experienced by them. It was attended by 14 workers from the same company whose form of organization of work and the productive processes is characteristic of Toyotism, a model of organization that stimulates individualism, competitiveness, outsourcing, flexibility and thus may favor the processes of work-related mental disorders. These workers shared their daily experiences related to work and reflected on them in a group, performed at CEREST in Campinas ? SP, over 11 meetings, during the period of six months. The group had an open character and was built together to the participants. The information shared by them showed that, initially, they wanted a lot to join the company, and while being admitted, they felt they have achieved a dream. During time, however, that dream has become a nightmare, as they experienced a context of psychological violence and demands for a high rate of production, which ended up favoring the development of physical injuries. As a result, the work-related mental suffering was intensified, as the injured workers were excluded, humiliated and reinserted to work in incompatible functions. In this sense, in the reflection group, subjects such as work under capitalism, flexible speech, the workers? guilt for illness, their life stories, new life projects, the union and solidarity among them, among other examples were discussed through conversation wheels and use of mediating materiality. It is possible to say that this kind of group assisted in the promotion of elements for the development of more critical reflections by the workers, who closed the meetings feeling less blame, stronger, united, in solidarity to each other, more active and responsible for social transformation.

To know and approach these groups in historical perspective is a form of knowing as researchers of the field have been using this opportunity and thinking of better possibilities to make use them. This research intends to contribute for the scientific progress of the field, because, different from other opportunities propitiated by the scientific community, research group as permanent and continuous grouping is opportunity of formal and informal communication that would allow to integrate and to potentiate efforts of knowledge production in the field. The search was made in two ways: for groups, using the wordkey "behavior analysis", "experimental analysis of behavior" and "behaviorism"; and for researchers, using masters` and doctors` names with dissertation and/or thesis in behavior analysis. Groups with at least one researcher in Behavior Analysis in all four censuses published by CNPq were followed. The search resulted in seventeen groups. The oldest was formed in 1983. More than half of the researchers found in these groups presented researches in behavior analysis, while the other share presented researches in different approaches of Psychology or even of other fields of knowledge. The number of researchers with doctor s degree increased along the years. Two among seventeen groups are registered out of the Psychology field. It was observed that four groups didn't modify their Research Line along the years and eight groups presented modifications in leadership. Note that there was an increase of connection of researchers to more than one group along the censuses. According to the obtained data, behavior analysis in Brazil, today, has titled researchers, in contact with other researchers (also titled), forming professionals and other researchers in behavior analysis. An advantage of research groups is the possibility of daily meeting for the development of researches, unlike the spaced encounters of the scientific associations / Grupos de pesquisa (conforme proposta do CNPq) são mais uma oportunidade de encontro de analistas do comportamento para o debate e o desenvolvimento de pesquisas.

In this work, we analyze formative aspects of the job with a socio-scientific question (QSC) by a Small Research Group at the university-school interface. It is a qualitative research approach that, based on the epistemology of the Critical Theory of Society, reflects the relation between subject and object in the construction of knowledge and the insertion of the researcher in the context of research. The compilation of data focused on the recordings of the PGP meetings during the year 2013, when the group developed an interdisciplinary didactic sequence (QSC) - on the "Standard of Beauty, Consumerism and Health" - that was chosen, discussed and built from their local demands; an initiative that had as one of its motivating aspects the expectation that the interdisciplinary collective work would contribute to the search for better indeces of the school in mathematics in the face of large scale evaluations (ALE). Logbooks and materials prepared by teachers were rescued and contextualized from the researcher's perspective, who was also a participant in PGP. From the critical concepts of Theodor Adorno and Walter Benjamin, we propose a methodology of analysis composed of three moments: i) the description and contextualization of the episodes experienced by the group that year, through a recollection of the researcher; ii) the construction of dialectical images in the test form; and iii) the elaboration of syntheses that represent the formative potential of socio-scientific questions for the formation of teachers. As the main notes, we indicate: a dialectical conception immanent to the concept of PGP, which is seen as an amplifying space for teacher autonomy while at the same time it ends up reflecting - consciously or unconsciously - systemic impositions; the importance of keeping in mind the history of the group's constitution for the continuity of a collective and communicative work; the defense of teacher training projects recognizing the closed cycle of the semiformation of the educational system and constructing understandings of training by the negative (resistance); the constant relation with the shock structure of school reality, which intermittently affects the teaching work with more or less direct impositions in its educational practice; the defense of the QSC as subsidies for a critical scientific education, enhancing the understanding of the studied phenomena and the very nature of science; and the potential that the process of building a QSC offers to enrich the formative experience of the teacher. Finally, from an intense and direct experience with the conditions and variables present in the daily school life, we developed some guidelines for the construction of QSC in the real conditions of the current basic school.

The Moral Consequences of Context: An Analysis of Bradshaw and Colleagues' Model of Moral Distress for Military Healthcare Professionals

Horning, Jillian 11 1900 (has links)
This paper provides an analysis of Bradshaw and Colleagues' model of military healthcare professionals' moral distress experiences. Using novel interview data collected from Canadian Forces healthcare professionals, the steps of the model are validated or potential refinements are suggested. / Military healthcare professionals (HCPs) may experience moral distress during international deployment. Moral distress is experienced when a HCP faces a moral dilemma, e.g., knows the morally correct course of action but is blocked from taking it, or where all available courses of action require something of moral significance be given up. While the literature indicates that moral distress often negatively impacts the mental health of the individual and the effectiveness of the organization, limited research has examined moral distress amongst military HCP. Many similar stressors and psychological health problems are present for both civilian and military HCP; however, the unique context of deployment necessitates further examination. This thesis explores the military HCP experience with moral distress by using Bradshaw and colleague’s model of progression from the encounter with a moral dilemma to the impact on individuals and organizations. Through the analysis of novel interviews collected by the Ethics in Military Medicine Research Group (EMMRG), Bradshaw and colleague’s model of military moral distress is compared to participant’s experiences and qualitatively analysed, with the results outlining where the model is supported and where refinement is recommended. These challenges were then supported by a literature review from the disciplines of virtue and feminist ethics, moral psychology, bioethics, and civilian HCP moral distress research. Two novel and significant revisions to the model are suggested: representing and integrating the cumulative experience of moral distress, and re-conceptualizing the resolution process based on the consideration of contextual controllability on moral responsibility. / Thesis / Master of Science (MS) / This thesis examines the experience of moral distress in military healthcare professionals (HCPs) while working abroad, where a HCP faces a moral dilemma, e.g., knows the morally correct course of action but is blocked from taking it or it requires something of moral significance be given up. This thesis analyses the most recent model of military HCP moral distress (Bradshaw, et al., 2010) by comparing it to the experiences described by participants in the Ethics in Military Medicine Research Group (EMMRG) study. The results outline support for the model as well as novel suggestions for revision, which are supported by literature from a variety of disciplines. Two adjustments to Bradshaw and colleague’s model are suggested: clearer representation of the cumulative nature of moral distress as well as a reconceptualization of the resolution process to consider the influence of the immediate and extended environment on moral responsibility.
