Instrumental Landscapes: Sustainable Strategies for Wetland Development

Fanti, Dennis 06 August 2010 (has links)
As a result of widespread urban development over the past two decades, global wetlands are disappearing at an alarming rate. This thesis develops a series of strategies for protecting wetland ecosystems from the ecological consequences that cascade through an ecosystem as a result of such development. This thesis is based on the paired assumptions that ecosystems represent networks of linked processes that operate across both local and global scales, and that the ecological integrity of any ecosystem can be maintained (a) only if the physical integrity of an ecosystem’s constituent processes is maintained, and (b) only if damage occurring at one ecological scale is prevented from affecting processes occurring at another. Thus, the strategies proposed here are multi-scalar and implemented at both the scale of the site and at the broader watershed scale. The strategies developed in this thesis focus on maintaining the physical integrity of the local wetlands as a means of protecting the processes that occur within the broader wetland ecosystem. The thesis proposes that wetland sites might be best protected from the effects of urban development by implementing a series of landscape interventions that provide the ecosystem with the means to reorient itself in new ecological relationships. Instead of attempting to recreate and control a complex set of conditions by imposing a deterministic architectural solution on the site, this strategy seeds new processes and new structural relationships such that the ecosystem reorganizes itself according to its own structural logic and grows into new stable relationships according to conditions that arise out of those processes. Because this approach generates a series of self-sustaining processes, human intervention is minimized beyond the initial stages. The stategies proposed here will be explored in the context of proposals recently announced by oil companies to develop ecologically sensitive wetland sites located on the Athabasca River in north-eastern Alberta.

The rise and fall of the tuberculosis sanitarium in response to the white plague

Grahn, Anya E. 23 May 2012 (has links)
American tuberculosis sanitarium architecture developed largely from trends set by European health spas and sanitarium design. The first American tuberculosis sanitariums largely resembled European health spas and resorts and catered to rich clientele. The spread of the White Plague, however, urged American states to develop sanitarium institutions that could provide for all classes. These first sanitariums melded nineteenth century resort architecture with radial prison designs and Kirkbride insane asylums to create large hospital complexes devoted exclusively to tuberculosis treatment and research. By the 1920s and 1930s, the European modernist movement had created modern tuberculosis sanitariums that inspired American sanitarium design. Despite the important role these institutions played in curing consumptives and limiting the spread of the White Plague, the increased use of drug therapy made sanitariums obsolete by the 1970s. Today, many of these sanitariums have been abandoned, demolished, or rehabilitated for new uses. / History of the disease -- The European and American health spa movements -- The development of the European sanitarium movement -- The development of the American sanitarium movement -- The American sanitarium movement : borrowing from European modernist innovation. / Department of Architecture

Blend In With Nature : a study about marketing communication of Indonesian ecotourism resorts / Bli en del av naturen : en studie om marknadsföringskommunikation av indonesiska ekoturism resorts.

Körberg, Vanessa, Rungård, Linnea January 2014 (has links)
The purpose with this study is to investigate and analyse how ecotourism is marketed to customers by two Indonesian small- and medium sized ecotourism resorts, focusing on marketing communication. Further, the aim is to clarify how these companies enhances their “eco brand”. This study was based on a qualitative research method with the purpose of creating a deeper understanding for our chosen topic and an inductive approach with deductive features was undertaken. The empirical data were collected through nine interviews with representatives and customers from the two studied companies. All of the interviews were conducted in Indonesia and done face-to face. The results of this research revealed that within marketing communication, digital media and word-of-mouth, have a greater importance for small and medium sized ecotourism resorts. It is also discovered that depending on how resorts operates ecotourism it will determinate how strong their “ecobrand” image. / The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency

Students usually link radioactivity with nuclear weapons or with nuclear accidents that they have heard about. Important issues of radioisotopes such as the applications in medicine are unknown by students and seem to be far off student everyday life. Didactic and playful materials are recognized as important tools to help teachers to motivate students in many activities. In this work we have developed a didactic game for Chemistry and Physics students based on game approaches and new teaching/learning methods. The material proposed here consists in a ruleassisted didactic game, a board game with cards and dice that requires from the players the knowledge and reasoning in radioisotopes and nuclear phenomena to answer the proposed questions in order to get forward. This didactic game was tested in classroom and the results indicated an increase of student s interest and skills in the subject.

Créations urbanistiques et architecturales des sites balnéaires et touristiques sur la Côte d' Azur dans la deuxième moitié du XXème siècle / Urban and architectural creations of seaside and tourist resorts on the Côte d'Azur in the second half of the 20th century

Pâris-Bussenot, Marie-Claude 28 June 2016 (has links)
This investigation situates itself in the frarnework of the studies on the seaside resort heritage of the Côte d'Azur in the second part of the 20th century. It concerns the history of three creations ex nihilo: Port-Grimaud, Marina-Baie-des- Anges, Port-la-Galère,initiated by three seashore builders. The grounds, still available because of their hostile character, had in common to combine natural beauty of the sites with inhospitable conditions of life. The consumer society of the sixties, turned towards watersports activities, was at the origin of a new way of urban development close to that of American marinas. Urban development and architecture being indissociable concerning seaside resorts, the functional typology of former seaside resorts was replacecl by more or less standardised constructions secreting a facility of identification: fishermen's housings, aligned on peninsulas, conceived by François Spoerry at Port-Grimaud, meandering pyramids bearing staggered terraces organised as an amphitheatre around the harbour and imagined by André Minangoy, grapes clung to the roc at Port-la-Galère. The style of the seaside resort isdue to the abundance of façade decoration, set off by the use of various materials. The new seaside resorts retlect Mediterranean architecture, with the prevalence of tenaces extending the outside inside, with architectural motives from the South and t'rom watersports semantics, These waterside constructions allowed the society of the sixties to satisfy their desire of seashore access and beeame the market of a bygone urban development.
