Profiling ecotourists within the Capricon District MunicipalityNheta, Daniel Silent 04 1900 (has links)
Increasingly, third-world countries are relying on ecotourism to boost their economies. Similar to other forms of tourism, ecotourism as a business initiative is perceived to contribute positively to economic development. However, tourism service providers generally do not deliver satisfactory services to ecotourists due to misunderstanding the segment’s needs and the customer traits. In emerging countries such as South Africa, which has a conducive economic environment for tourism businesses, some provincial departments such as the Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism has set objectives to make the Limpopo province a preferred ecotourism destination. These have been propagated by service providers who passively participate in ecotourism yet claim to be ecotourism service providers. Moreover, the attitude of passiveness by service providers is derived from insufficient knowledge of the ecotourist. This set the foundation for the current study, which sought to provide detailed profiles of ecotourists in the Capricorn District Municipality in order to gain a clear understanding of the ecotourists visiting the Limpopo province. The study reviewed theoretical and empirical works conducted by tourism scholars. The study was developed on a descriptive research design and employed a quantitative approach. It made use of self-administered questionnaires with a sample of 295 participants selected from tourism establishments and attractions in the region, utilising convenience and purposive sampling methods respectively. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 24 and Microsoft Office Excel was used to analyse the data. Descriptive statistics, factor analysis, cluster analysis and Chi-square tests were conducted to analyse the data of the study. The findings revealed demographic, psychographic and behavioural descriptors associated with the ecotourists in the Capricorn District Municipality. In addition, information sources preferred by ecotourists in the Capricorn District Municipality were identified. It is envisaged that the findings of the study will be of value to ecotourism service providers as they will provide a sound understanding of ecotourists and thereby help to deliver satisfactory ecotourist experiences. This will ultimately provide valuable input for the planning of the Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism in promoting the Limpopo province as a preferred ecotourism destination in South Africa.

IMPLEMENTING SUSTAINABLE TOURISM: THE CASE OF FAIR TOURISM IN SOUTH KOREASeungah Chung (11206128) 30 July 2021 (has links)
While there is a concern that Sustainable Tourism has not been entirely adopted in practice
(Graci, 2008), this thesis shows that Sustainable Tourism has been implemented by South Korean
Tour Operators under the name of Fair Tourism. Fair Tourism is a rising trend as Sustainable
Tourism in South Korea, and discussion on this new sector of the industry has increased in recent
years (S. Gil Lee, 2016). This thesis adds to that discourse with three research objectives: 1) Define
the concept of Fair Tourism. 2) What activities constitute Fair Tourism from practitioners’
viewpoint? 3) Examine how Fair Tour operators manage their sustainable supply chain based on
the SCOR model.<div><br></div><div>To understand practitioners’ perception of Fair Tourism, this study has applied social
constructionism, which recognized that human beings construct meanings through individual
interaction (Walker, 2015). Semi-structured interviews with fifteen Fair Travel operators and
thematic analysis have been applied for methodology (Elo & Kyngäs, 2008; McIntosh & Morse,
2015). This study has two significant findings. First, the findings have revealed a generally
accepted definition of Fair Tourism by both researchers and operators. The definition includes
Ensuring Economic Contribution to The Destination, Environmental and Social Sustainability, and
Mutually Respectful Relationship. This generally acknowledged definition has helped Fair Tour
operators develop the sector. Second, this thesis found that operators genuinely respect their
suppliers. Operators regard their suppliers as partners who share responsibilities and benefits,
leading to satisfactory outcomes for all partners (Macaulay et al., 1999). Their relationship with
partners is long-term and deep rather than transactional.</div><div><br></div><div>Theoretically, this thesis contributed to the finding that Sustainable Tourism can be
practicable under the name of Fair Tourism, demonstrating practitioners’ replies that are 100
percent consistent. This study applied a novel approach, focusing on the operators’ point of view,
while previous studies on Fair Tourism focused on defining the term and the industry's demand
(Byun, 2016; M.-K. Kim & Cho, 2019; Shin et al., 2018). Given that Supply Chain Operations
Reference (SCOR) model has been developed for the analysis of the manufacturing industry, this
study has advanced this manufacturing performance measurement framework and applied it to the
tourism industry.</div>

[pt] OS PRINCÍPIOS DA PRODUÇÃO MAIS LIMPA COMO FERRAMENTA DE PRÁTICAS MAIS SUSTENTÁVEIS EM PEQUENOS MEIOS DE HOSPEDAGEM / [en] THE PRINCIPLES OF CLEANER PRODUCTION AS A TOOL FOR MORE SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES IN SMALL HOTELSANA CRISTINA DA SILVA COSTA 25 September 2023 (has links)
hospedagem do município. / [en] Tourism as an economic activity and a social phenomenon, which has a big
potencial as a tool for protecting the environment, as well as, for eradicating
poverty. Today, there is a promising tourist activity, with tourists who are
more cautions in their choices, enjoying healthier and responsible tourism.
In this context, considering the accommodation as a tourist equipment,
which must be aligned with this new responsible tourism, hotel enterprises
must be willing to adopt practices that aim to improve their performance in
the face of environmental, social and economic issues. In this perspective,
Cleaner Production (CP) comes as a tool that can be applied to companies
in the most varied segments, through an economic and socio-environmental
strategy, proving to be a viable and interesting alternative for managers,
who envision the improvement of its production processes. Thus, this work
aims to study the feasibility of implementing Cleaner Production in a small
accommodation located on Vilatur beach in Saquarema – RJ, aiming to
bring important benefits to the enterprise in terms of environmental,
economic and social aspects, as well as using this study as a pilot so that
the proposal can be multiplied for adherence to other small hotels in the city.

In today's society, it's hard to ignore the negative impact travel has on the environment. Fossilfuels currently dominate the global energy system, and the tourism industry's contribution toclimate change is significant. However, travelers have opportunities to reduce their ownenvironmental impact by lowering their emissions. Studies have shown that even whenpeople have positive attitudes towards the environment and sustainability, this doesn't alwayslead to responsible behavior, especially during vacations. This disconnect is known as theattitude-behavior gap. Using nudges can help change the decision-making environment, informing people about different options and promoting more sustainable choices. This studyexplored whether an attitude-behavior gap exists among Swedes traveling within Sweden andwhich nudges that could encourage more responsible tourism. A mix of quantitative surveysand qualitative interviews was used to examine attitudes and behaviors in detail. The findingsrevealed that while most Swedish travelers have a positive attitude towards sustainability andmake responsible choices at home, they often abandon these behaviors when traveling. It wasfound that Swedish travelers are most responsive to nudges that benefit them personally, suchas cost-saving offers, more accessible information, and sustainable options that do notcompromise their comfort, convenience, or time.

Environmental law perspectives on the regulation of ecotourism in South Africa's transition to a green economy / Rozanne Elizabeth LubbeLubbe, Rozanne Elizabeth January 2013 (has links)
South Africa and the rest of the world currently face an exacerbating threat of environmental degradation, which can be partly ascribed to the fact that some parts of society still place economic growth as a priority over environmental conservation. This study shows that such an approach is only profitable over the short term and actually causes more harm than good. On the other hand, the world is still recovering from the major 2008 global financial crisis. To tip the scale back into balance, it is crucial that economic -, social -, and environmental development be sustainable; from now and into the future.
This study recognises that, to achieve sustainable development at all three levels, a transition to a green economy is needed. In essence a green economy requires investment in the environment for the benefit of both society and the economy.
This study then goes on to show that ecotourism can be used as a manner to invest in the environment, whilst at the same time uplifting society and improving the economy. Subsequently it is identified as a key driver of a green economy.
However, a daunting reality is that ecotourism developments and - activities also threaten the environment. This study therefore argues that ecotourism has to be regulated effectively; otherwise it will not live up to its purpose and may, as a result, curtail South Africa’s efforts of a transition to a green economy, instead of positively contributing to it.
This study asks the question: Does South Africa’s environmental legislation provide for the effective regulation of ecotourism? This question is answered by considering whether various relevant pieces of national environmental legislation measure up to certain criteria that is inherent to the effective regulation of ecotourism. Finally this study serves to show that; from an environmental law perspective, and to the extent that this study investigated the ecotourism environment, ecotourism as a phenomenon is regulated effectively in South Africa. However, it appears that there still remains tremendous scope for improvement. / LLM (Environmental Law and Governance), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014
