Identity and Language Use in Adolescent Latina/o Literature

Vismara, Meghan Lynn 16 March 2018 (has links)
This thesis examines how characters in adolescent Latina/o literature use and reflect on both English and Spanish languages, bilingualism and how language use informs a character’s identity. In this thesis a particular emphasis is placed on code switching as a literary device in adolescent Latina/o literature. Investigations on code switching point to this, that many authors use code switching as a way for authors and characters to show the difficulties of living between two cultures. I examined the works of three accomplished authors of Latina/o adolescent in this investigation: Benjamin Alire Sáenz’s Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe (2012), Julia Álvarez’s Before We Were Free (2002) and the Tía Lola Series (2009), and Pam Muñoz Ryan’s Esperanza Rising (2004) and Echo (2015). The struggle to find one’s identity as an immigrant in the United States can emotionally compare to the struggle of an adolescent trying to balance their struggles of identity and this similarity of identity definition can be seen in all of these works. I argue that these authors use code switching and discussions on bilingualism as a device that helps articulate the exploration of the protagonist's search for identity into adulthood. Code switching and bilingualism are used to juxtapose the childhood and adult stages of the characters. These serve as ruptural elements that defy the generation of the parents and the cultural expectations. Code switching further serves as a mechanism through which protagonists reject and accept aspects of their identity development, from homosexuality to economic status. In a parallel way, I explore the importance of adolescent Latina/o literature as a referential axis for Latina/o youth in their process of development. This genre plays a role in development by showing strong, non-stereotypical characters who can help shape Latina/o identity for the next generation in the United States. Because adolescence is the stage in life where the individual goes through a time of questioning identity and development, this thesis shows that adolescent Latina/o literature may be best suited to show the process of growing up as compared to mainstream adolescent literature and gives a concrete metaphor for the challenges that many adolescents face. / Master of Arts

Motivation i projektledning : en kvalitativ studie av projektledares tillvägagångssätt att motivera projektgrupper / Motivation in project management : a qualitative study of project managers ways of action to motivate project teams

Lichtenstein, Michael, Stojcic, Dejan January 2017 (has links)
Motivation is a key factor for the success of a project. The purpose of this study was to contribute to the understanding of how project managers are motivating project teams. The empirical data is based on qualitative data from six personal interviews with project managers in the technology industry. The empirical material has been analyzed mainly with the motivation theories Self Determination Theory and the Two factor model. The study found seven main themes that could categorize the project managers ways of action: Theme 1 – Cohesion and Social relations, Theme 2 – Meaningful work - creating common view of project goals, Theme 3 – Information exchange and Progress, Theme 4 - Participation, Responsibility and Trust, Theme 5 – Degree of Control, Theme 6 – Feedback and Recognition, Theme 7 – Celebrating success and conclusion. The ways of action can be summarized to: Getting to know the group. Giving an overview of the project. Sharing information and success of the project. Allowing everyone to participate and delegate responsibility. Having a balanced control function. Giving continues feedback. Celebrating success. The analysis with the Self Determination Theory showed that the basic psychological needs autonomy, competence and relatedness, were affected within the seven themes. The same ways of action could be experienced in various ways depending how they were performed, with the effect that end up in different places on the internalization scale. The project managers mainly used external factors to influence motivation. The analysis with the Two factor model showed that the project managers used motivational factors to a greater extent than hygiene factors to motivate, except for social relations. This was probably due to the fact that hygiene factors usually are company-specific and are beyond the control of the project managers. The analysis showed that the seven themes described in the study influenced different motivational needs. Every project manager had an understanding that motivation was important and that internal motivation was preferable. However, nothing in the study indicated that the project managers had a greater understanding of the psychological processes of the individuals had, that their ways of action influenced. The project managers’ ways of action were based on their own experiences, rather than anchored in formulated processes or theories. None of the companies in the study had an conscious articulated motivation strategy that project managers could use.

Robert RYAN ou la fureur souterraine : jeu d'acteur d'une "non-star" hollywoodienne / Robert Ryan or the Underground Fury : acting of a Hollywood “Non-Star”

Balso, André 03 July 2018 (has links)
Robert Ryan (1909-1973) was one of those actors who never became a movie star. However, he was not completely in the shadow of his famous contemporaries. Celebrated for his part in Edward Dmytryk’s Crossfire (1947), he was this "non-star" actor playing neurotic, violent, affirmative and disorientated film noir characters, but he was not only that. If he has been forgotten today, like most actors of his kind, he nevertheless made seventy-three movies, sometimes directed by filmmakers such as Jean Renoir, Nicholas Ray, Anthony Mann, Max Ophuls or Fritz Lang, and he also had a career in theatre and television. Through the description of some of his roles, by analyzing the peculiarity of his acting style, and trying to place him within the aesthetic history of American cinema, the following text deals with one of those underrated "Hollywood standby", that were vital to the craft of American cinema.

Nutrition Services, Viral Suppression, CD4, and Retention in Ryan White Program Participants

Jumento, Theresa 01 January 2017 (has links)
The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) provides HIV-related medical and support services for uninsured and underinsured people living with HIV (PLWH) in the United States. In addition to HIV-related medical care, the program provides medical nutrition therapy and food assistance. The role of nutrition in the health of PLWH is well-documented, especially in resource poor areas; however, the role of medical nutrition therapy and food assistance provided through the RWHAP in resource rich areas is not well documented. This study addressed the association between the nutrition services of food assistance and medical nutrition therapy and the HIV-related health outcomes of viral suppression, retention in care, and CD4 counts. The behavioral model for vulnerable populations was used as the theoretical foundation for this quantitative cross-sectional study. A sample of 428 RWHAP clients was used from the Ryan White Services Report data. Pearson's chi-square was used to examine the association between medical nutrition therapy (MNT) and viral suppression. Findings indicated statistically significant associations between MNT and viral suppression, retention in care and any nutrition service (food assistance, MNT, or both), and MNT and retention in care. Implications for social change include emphasizing the role of nutrition services in HIV-related health outcomes for PLWH in resource rich areas.

Inventing ritual : moving images of social reality in contemporary art

Vogt, Naomi January 2017 (has links)
Ritual is a notion that the art world has increasingly reclaimed. From critical writing that zealously identifies rituals to artists who qualify their work as ritualistic, the notion circulates, poking at the boundaries of art practice. The pattern raises critical questions for art history: does it vanish the distinction between art and social practices, casting art's separation from ritual as a passing historical phase? What are the distinctions in the first place between representing and producing a ritual? These concerns come to the fore with moving images, given that ritual has long been at the heart of ethnographic film, while the very act of filming is becoming central to a growing number of social customs. Addressing these relationships, this thesis focuses on video work since the late 1990s. The thematic research moves through three case studies: series of works by Mike Kelley, Pierre Huyghe, Ryan Trecartin and Lizzie Fitch, while keeping a comparative view towards other observers and producers of ritual in premodern painting, ethnographic filmmaking, post-internet practices, mainstream cinema, and homemade videos. Among the most influential artists at the turn of this century, Kelley, Huyghe, Trecartin and Fitch share the singular practice of restaging, for and through film, the rituals that surround them, from high school hazing and carnivals to coronations, corporate team-building, Halloween, Valentine and May Days, suburban street fairs, birthdays, and the new observances of social media. Through close study of the artworks and of moving image tropes that shape social imaginaries, the thesis suggests that these artists produce new insights into contemporary human behaviour. While art and ritual tend to be tackled as coded objects to be deciphered, holding condensed information about the societies to which they point, anthropological theory that considers ritual for what it does (rather than what it symbolises) invites us to examine them instead as practices where portions of social reality are produced - formalised and reinvented.

Characterization and Preliminary Demonstration of Microcantilever Array Integrated Sensors

Anderson, Ryan R. 07 July 2012 (has links) (PDF)
I characterize the behavior of microcantilever arrays which utilize the in-plane photonic transduction that I've previously developed and evaluate the performance of the microcantilever arrays in simple sensing scenarios with integrated microfluidics. First the thermal responses of microcantilevers with a variety of patterns of deposited gold films are compared. Using a scanning electron microscope, I observe the deflection thermal sensitivities of 300 µm long microcantilevers to be -170.82 nm/K for a full gold coating and -1.93 nm/K for no gold coating. Using the photonic transduction method I measure a thermal sensitivity of -1.46 nm/K for a microcantilever array with no gold. A microcantilever array integrated with microfluidics is exposed to a solution of bovine serum albumin (BSA) followed by solutions of various pH's. In all cases I observe a previously unreported transient deflection response. We find that the transient response is due to temporary nonuniform concentration distributions. In response to nonspecific binding of BSA, I observe a transient surface stress of -0.23 mN/m that agrees well with the -0.225 mN/m predicted by simulations. We hypothesize that the deflection response to pH changes is due to stress generated by conformational changes of bound BSA.The deflection response of an integrated microcantilever array to different types of flow and different flow rates is observed. Simulations of the deflection response match well with experimental results but disagree at higher flow rates. For flow rates greater than 200 µL/min, the limitation of the differential signal's dynamic range becomes apparent. We then investigate flow driven by an on-chip reciprocating reservoir pump. We demonstrate that it is possible to use the reciprocating pump to achieve high flow rates while making deflection measurements in-between reservoir actuations. Investigations of the microcantilever array noise show that flicker noise dominates below 10 Hz, while above 10 Hz, readout noise dominates. A minimum deflection noise density of 15 pW/√Hz is achieved. To improve the signal-to-noise ratio I develop algorithms for a digital lock-in amplifier with a digital phase-lock loop. In simulation the lock-in amplifier is able to improve the SNR by up to a factor of 6000, and self-lock to a noisy carrier signal without an external reference signal.
