Role of transportation in employment outcomes of the disadvantaged

Yi, Chang, Ph. D. 10 April 2012 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on the relationship between accessibility to job opportunities, travel mode choices and employment outcomes of the disadvantaged. In past research examining the impact of accessibility on employment outcomes of the underprivileged, it has been an implicit assumption that a poor individual's employment status is directly connected to accessibility to transport modes and job opportunities. This dissertation challenges such a fundamental assumption and argues that due to unique travel needs of the poor, a high level of access to transportation means or job accessibility provided by a given travel mode does not automatically determine the choice of that particular travel mode. What is missing in the existing literature is examination of how accessibility affects travel mode choices for low-income individuals, and how travel mode preferences subsequently influence their employment outcomes. The objective of this dissertation is to shed new light on current understanding of the relationship between transportation and employment of the disadvantaged. The study focuses on explaining what factors influence low-income individuals in their choice of a transportation mode, and more importantly, how modal preferences, along with job accessibility, affect employment of the poor. Household travel survey data from the San Francisco Bay Area and the Atlanta Metropolitan Region were used to examine this interrelationship. The research findings show that higher modal and job accessibility do not always determine the choice of a particular travel mode, defying the assumption of the previous studies. What is important for enhancing one's employment is whether or not a low-income person has regular access to cars and an individual circumstance allows the poor to utilize existing automobiles rather than the efficiency of highway network. In terms of public transportation, higher job accessibility by transit network is associated with better employment outcomes for transit users. Nonetheless, when transit riders had to access transit systems by walking, job accessibility did not have meaningful impact on employment. It is important to note that the impact that job accessibility by transit has on employment is found only in a transit-friendly Bay Area. Policy implication from this dissertation is discussed. / text

Telling the story of women's contributions to public relations : a content analysis of three public relations industry publications, 2001-2005

Siler, Megan N. January 2009 (has links)
This study examines the representation of women in public relations industry publications. The three publications published by the Public Relations Society of America and International Association of Business Communicators were content analyzed to determine the inclusion of women. Findings suggest that women are not represented in industry publications at the percentages of which they represent the field. Results of this study suggest that the contributions and value of women in public relations may still be overlooked despite the feminization of the field. The largest benefactors of this research will be future female practitioners currently enrolled in undergraduate and graduate level public relations programs. An understanding of women’s contributions to the profession is important for many reasons. The scholarly and tactical contributions of women provide examples to future professionals of what can be done in the field as well as the impact they can expect to make in the field. / Department of Journalism

Crowded: Population Pressures in San Francisco Bay Area National Park Service Properties

Ebinger, Caroline R 01 January 2016 (has links)
This paper hopes to analyze the intersection between diversity and numbers of visitors and landscape preservation in the National Park Service. Current scholarship addresses either diversity in the Park System or carrying capacity and human population pressures. However, both are critical issues facing the National Park Service in the 21st century, and looking at the issues in isolation means missing a key interaction and potentially working to solve one problem that in turn amplifies another. Here, diversity of park-goers and preservation priorities will be addressed together, each as part of the other. Pinnacles National Park, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and Muir Woods National Monument each face human population pressures, yet each park has unique issues that illuminate the larger struggles within in NPS to ensure its mission to preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations is still being met 100 years after conception.

This research is part of the Santiago Andino Action Plan, which is carried out by the SAG, the Ministry of the Environment (MMA), the University of Chile, the Chile Sustentable Program, agricultural and tourism entrepreneurs, and citizen organizations. Santiago Andino is a public and private management plan for the conservation of biodiversity, promoting sustainable territorial management in response to the characteristics, potential and regional projections. The Santiago Andino Plan seeks to implement the National Biodiversity Conservation Strategy (ENCB) in priority sites in the community of José de Maipo. The location in which the planning of the roads management was necessary is the San Francisco de Lagunillas Santuary, located in priority site El Morado. The present study proposes a methodology to develop management plans for roads in Protected Wild Areas (ASP). The San Francisco de Lagunillas Santuary and route Nº G-355 are explored in this work as the primary case studies. The route is a public, secondary, gravel road, just outside of the urban area of San José de Maipo. G-355 is an access road in the sanctuary which leads to the winter resort of Lagunillas, located 17 km from the town of San José de Maipo. The study uses a combination and adaptation of three principal methodologies. The first is the land and participation planning used by Santiago Andino Project. The second, the methodology of CONAF for the planning of protected areas management. And finally, elements of the Roads Manual Ministry of Public Works (MOP). The plan relied on field visits, GIS tools and remote sensing. As a result, a Methodology of the Management Plan for Roads, replicable to other protected wild areas and based on two angles, was obtained. The methodology starts first with the characterization and diagnosis of the route, the determination of the criteria for the management of roads, the determination of Homogeneous Zones of Influence and the identification of impacts and potentials of each area with associated stakeholders. Secondly, it focus on the determination of the objectives of use and the goal of the road according to the needs of the ASP. Zoning, defined gradually in two phases, was obtained through the relationship between the two parts previously described. The first was established to deal with the problems and impacts of the route that needs short-term solutions that reduce and mitigate conflict and structural threats. The second phase proposes zoning of the road based on its close resemblance to a scenic route that highlights the extraordinary landscape. This general proposal for the Road Management Plan outlines a report explaining the implementation of the established measures in the zoning, such as the placement of signs of each zone and proposals for rest areas and lookouts.

Later the registered data were added to more 23 species, totalizing 35 species. The total data were submitted to the clustering analysis resulting in groups with recognized phylogenetic proximities. The principal component analysis were applied to quantitative and categorical variables resulting in the formation of two great dissimilary groups: one formed by species that presented similar atributtes in relation to the length of the larva newly hatched LTL ,to the adhesiveness of the eggs ADESIOV, to the low relatively fecundity FRG, to the absence of larval movements MOVELAR and to high values for the hatch in hourdegree TE. The other group was formed by species that presented similar atributtes in relation to the total length of females LT, to the absolute fecundity FA, to the presence of larval adhesive organ and vertical larval movements in the water, ADESILAR and MOVELAR, respectively. It is argumented that these two basic reproductive patterns are the polar principles of the different conditions of the qualitative and quantitative reproductive characters that they are so close as more proximities among the species, with rare exception as the Pseudopimelodidae . It was possible to do inferences about the condition of the in Characiformes, Siluriformes and Gymnotiformes, that had your origin, in hypothesis, from nest protoguardadores.
