”I look flawless all day long” : En studie av diskurser om skönhet i material producerat av influencers / ”I look flawless all day long” : A study of discourses about beauty in content created by influencers.

Wikström, Mikaela January 2018 (has links)
The internet and social media networks have created a changed world of media. Influencers work with creating content on these platforms. This study is focused on five female influencers which each has a large audience of viewers and that work within the category of beauty. They make content that mainly focuses on makeup and fashion. The study's aim is to examine discourses about beauty, identity and emotions in content created by these influencers, and to examine if norms and ideals about beauty is reproduced or challenged. The study relies on a theoretical framework with theories about influence marketing, identity and self-presentation online, the consumer society and how it relates to beauty, gender analysis, and also the role of emotion in cultural politics. The study uses two methods, the first being an analysis of content posted on Twitter using the tool Textometrica and the second being a multimodal discourse analysis of ten videos posted on YouTube. The results show that western ideals of beauty often are reproduced in this material, and that they are reproduced in different ways and forms. Multiple themes and topics within the discourse is discussed. These for example involving who the influencers are and what it takes to become a popular influencer, the identities these influencers build online and aspects of how they create their content, the myth that anyone can become as beautiful and sellable as the influencers if only they use the right products in the right ways, how the body and someone's appearance is seen as a never-ending project that can always be improved and also at theme about an internalised judging gaze. Beauty in this discourse is a word that metonymically becomes sticky with positive values and emotions and almost becomes a synonym for concepts of happiness and health. To be ideally beautiful becomes equivalent to be happy and confident.  To be ideally beautiful becomes equivalent to be healthy. The reproduction of these norms is problematic in many ways, where one of the most important is that it excludes people that does not live up to the norms. It can also be harmful in a way of effecting mental health and wellbeing of the people trying to live up to these norms.

Hur frilansare inom mediebranschen använder sociala medier som marknadsföringsverktyg - How freelancers in the media business use social media as a marketing tool

Wredh, Olivia January 2017 (has links)
Denna uppsats behandlar frilansare i mediebranschen. / How freelancers in the media business use social media as a marketing toolThis paper is about freelancers in the media industry. The study aims to contribute with information to the already existing understanding of how the media industry looks today, but also to increase the understanding of how freelancers use social media within their marketing. The use of the social media as a marketing tool has been studied through qualitative interviews with freelancers. The result describes which social medias are used by the freelancing respondents, but also how the context of the media industry looks today. It also enlightens the importance of social contacts for the freelancers and the meaning of self-branding. The collected material has been analyzed through an abductive approach, which means that an interaction between empirical data and theory-based information has been done. The conclusion of this study shows that social media is a necessary tool for the freelancers to succeed with their self-branding, not only to be noticed by your own contacts, but for the potential clients as well. The importance of contacts also has a big role for freelancers in the media industry, but in the lack of it, it can be supplemented with social media marketing since social media can help you with your self-branding, which is important for the professional success of a freelancer.

Self-branding on elite level : How female athletes use social media for empowerment

Wiebach, Stephanie January 2022 (has links)
Professional athletes use social media for many different purposes. That includes sharing personal lives, sport achievements as well as endorsements and branding activities with sponsors. Women’s professional sports gain more and more popularity which is why creating a brand around oneself becomes more important and essential to stay valuable and attractive to sponsors. Online settings have become a stage for self-presentation and social media has enabled athletes to not only share marketing content but to communicate and spread a message. Based upon Goffman’s self-presentation theory, performances and “economies of visibility”, this research aims to understand how female athletes use social media, especially Instagram, and how new media is used as a tool for empowerment and as a tool to raise awareness around social justice causes. For that, a content thematic analysis has been conducted. The sportswomen who have risen to the top level demonstrate how their sports have helped them to build self-confidence and use their power on and off the field. The result indicates that the majority of Instagram posts focus on the athletes’ personal life and backstage insights are shared as well as empowering and motivational messages.

Olano, Elsa 08 1900 (has links)
This study investigates new forms of celebrity known as micro-celebrity, and more specifically self-branding practices emerging in a neoliberal context. Even though micro-celebrities, like influencers, are usually linked to digital media and the increasing popularity of social media, I argue that reality television show contestants are, in fact, the pioneers of these new practices and among the first to develop careers based on visibility and image. For this reason, I choose to study the specific case of Jessica Thivenin, contestant from the French reality television show Les Marseillais (2012–), who has become an influencer. Through a cross-media content analysis of four key moments in Thivenin’s self-branding career, I observe how Jessica Thivenin staged herself, and is also staged, in order to make herself visible as a brand. In this analysis grounded in cultural and visual studies, I use a theoretical framework inspired by Goffman’s work (1959), with concepts like performance, impression management and self-presentation. Finally, this research opens a discussion on several concerns such as representation, the image of reality television as seen by the audience and by researchers, as well as bad buzz.
