What's really disgusting

Abstract Finding something disgusting involves a particular sensuous experience and an evaluation that the thing is of little or no value. Sensuous properties such as digustingness are constituted by these two aspects, the sensuous and the evaluative. In “The Authority of Affect” (2001a), Mark Johnston argues for a detectivist account where our affective states detect mind-independent properties of sensuous value, like disgustingness. He argues that the other two standard positions, projectivism and dispositionalism, do not account for the authority of affect or are incoherent. In this paper, I argue that he is wrong to rule out dispositionalism for being incoherent and that it does account for the authority of affect. In addition, I argue that it is best able to capture the nature of sensuous properties and that it should be the default account of the relation between sensuous properties and affect.

Food: A Sensuous Matter of the Everyday : A sensorial exploration of material and bounded natures of mundane food practices

This thesis examines everyday food practices such as sensed by seven households in the city ofStockholm, Sweden. By sensuously exploring the acts of acquiring, preparing, cooking, eating,and wasting food, I analyze how food is a matter of olfactory, gustatory, auditory, tactile, andvisual significance, as much as matter per se. More specifically, I address relational andbounded aspects of food, looking at how ambient surroundings, presences of material andimmaterial factors, sensuously influence everyday experiences of food. Intrigued by the at onceinter-, extra-, and re-corporeal matters of food, I analytically position myself alongside Latour,Ingold, Douglas, and Bennett. In entertaining their theoretical lines of thoughts, using them asanalytical springboards, this thesis explores socio-material dimensions of food practices, as wellas corporeal dynamics of human-material encounters. Methodologically carried out by meansof sensuous ethnography, following Pink’s notion of participatory practice, I have during tenweeks of fieldwork—in people’s homes and in their frequented grocery stores—engaged mysenses to experientially sense the world of food, such as lived by them. In our conjoint sensorialexploration, taken-for-granted mundane understandings of what food constitutes and whatconstitutes it, have emerged as domestically diverse, bounded to sensuous perceptionsderivative of the past, carried out in the presents, and cor(po)related to the future. By surveyingsituated meanings of what is smelled when savored, tasted when flavored, seen when looked,and felt when touched, simultaneously as accounting for nonhuman matters salient to coursesof actions, the thesis remarks context-sensorial-imbued figurations of everyday food.

Young Children's Mathematical Spatial Reasoning in a Montessori Classroom

The object of this research was to investigate young children's mathematical spatial reasoning in a Montessori classroom. Spatial reasoning is an important part of children's mathematical learning and development; however, opportunities for rich spatial reasoning are not readily available in the classroom. Rather, there is a focus on numeracy at the expense of geometry where activities for spatial development are usually found. Montessori designed a sensory curriculum around children's development, yet spatial reasoning in a Montessori classroom has not been fully investigated. This was a qualitative study using some tools of ethnography. The theoretical framework was Radford's sensuous cognition (2013, 2014) which allowed for an understanding of human development as cultural with the body essential to that development. The data, captured by video, were the children's semiotic traces (Bartolini Bussi and Baccaglini-Frank (2015, p. 393) which are the visible productions of the children's spatial reasoning such as their movements, text, drawings, and speech. The analysis found that the children had ample opportunities for engaging in challenging mathematical problems which required their spatial reasoning. These engaging activities resulted in the children using a wide range of spatial skills as they reasoned mathematically. The children's movement, the main semiotic trace generated by the children, was crucial to their spatial reasoning. This investigation concluded the pedagogical practices created a rich and dynamic environment for the children's spatial development. Practices included the use of well-designed mathematical manipulatives, engagement in the manner of guided play, co-operative learning with peers of mixed ages, extensive time for activities, and assessment based on observations of individual children.

A breath of fresh air : breathing stories of the lived experiences of asthma and sporting embodiment

The purpose of this study is to conduct an investigation of the lived experiences of asthma and sporting embodiment in non-elite sportspeople of different ages and levels of ability, involved in a range of sports. Asthma is characterised as a breathing disorder and the aim of this research is to add to embodied literature by providing ‘fleshy’ realities of the moving, sweating, sensuous sporting body, which holds meanings, purposes and interests for people who experience sport with asthma. Breathing is not only a physiological process, but it is also cultural and people may deal with their asthma symptoms in ways that reflect cultural attitudes embedded in sport. This qualitative study addresses five exploratory questions: 1) How do sportspeople experience asthma? 2) How do sportspeople negotiate their asthma and sporting identities? 3) How do emotional dimensions play a role in sportspeople’s asthma and sporting experiences? 4) How do perceptions of environment and illness shape one another by examining the relationship between the body, the self and environment? 5) What is the role of trauma in sportspeople with asthma? 6) How do key senses (sound) play a role in sportspeople’s asthma and embodied sporting experiences? Through a symbolic-interactionsist and phenomenological-inspired approach, this research places emphasis on the mind-body-self nexus in relation to sensory experiences with a focus upon the centrality of the ‘visceral’ body in the relationship between self-consciousness and the self. A bodily disruption (e.g., asthmatic attack) is likely to heighten awareness of the body-self and contingency and may amplify how sportspeople listen to their own embodied selves when engaged in sporting action. Therefore, sportspeople may become even more acutely aware of, and attuned to, their breathing in ways that link the physiological, the psychological, the social and the environment. This may lead to a permanent re-ordering/negotiation of identities (e.g., athletic identity - asthma identity) through ‘emotion work’ and ‘somatic (auditory) work’ in which a concern with the body is central. The findings are represented as a typology consisting of Conformers, Contesters and Creators, which may be used as a framework to assist health care and sporting professionals in developing more appropriate and effective rehabilitation regimes for sportspeople, in order to improve the quality of treatment and outcomes.

A Dizzying Splendor : Experience and Emotion in the Ceiling Frescos of Il Gesù and Sant’Ignazio

The thesis is a performative and sensuous study based on pre-iconographic descriptions of the formal features in the ceiling paintings The Triumph of the Name of Jesus (1674-1679) by Giovanni Battista Gaulli (called Baciccio, 1639-1709) in Il Gesù, Rome and Glorification of Sant'Ignazio (1685-1694) by Andrea Pozzo (1642-1709) in Sant'Ignazio, Rome.  By tracing effects likely perceived by different visitors through eyesight and the movement in the room, the aim is to suggest why these artworks are perceived as powerful. The results show that the power of the illusion in both paintings lie in the questioning of elements a visitor will know devoid of iconography or theological understanding of the narrative. Through elements a visitor will recognize and have bodily and sensuous experience of, different features will make the visitor question reality related to painted fiction. This experience and how it affects a visitor is why the artworks hold a central place in the art historical view on the Baroque, and further, Jesuit Style. The method for this analysis is pre-iconographic descriptions of all the figures in the vaulted naves, that are analyzed by the author using performative theory and a sensuous perspective as the theoretical framework. The research question for the thesis is: How is a visitor affected by the formal features in "The Triumph of the Name of Jesus" by Giovanni Battista Gaulli and "Glorification of Sant'Ignazio" by Andrea Pozzo?

Med sitt ofullbordade verk Le Visible et l’invisible påbörjade Maurice Merleau-Ponty formulerandet av en poetisk ontologi – en filosofi som sätter konsten i centrum för erfarenheten av Varat och som därmed går att förstå som en estetik. Uppsatsen undersöker Merleau-Pontys Le Visible et l’invisible som en estetik i den dubbla bemärkelsen av en teori om sinnlighetens relation till tänkandet och vilken betydelse konsten har för denna relation. I fokus är sinnlighetens öppenhet gentemot en värld bortom det enskilda subjektet, som detta subjekt står i kontakt med genom sin kroppslighet. Här undersöks hur konstens sinnliga idéer indirekt frambringar en erfarenhet av Varats osynliga lager, de latenta samband mellan Varats framträdelser som följer och bär upp det synliga, och hur konsten därmed kan sägas frambringa en ny sanning. Här undersöks hur dessa sinnliga idéer kommer till uttryck, vilka former de antar. Med det aktiveras frågan om konstverkets form och innehåll, uttryck och mening. Sinnligheten förstås som samtidig gräns och öppning, som plats för den händelse som skapar världen. / With his unfinished work Le Visible et l’invisible Maurice Merleau-Ponty began to formulate a poetic ontology – a philosophy that places art in center of the experience of Being, and which is therefore possible to understand as an aesthetics. The essay examines Le Visible et l’invisible as an aesthetics in the double sense as a theory of how perception relates to cognition and what impact the arts has to this relation. It focuses on the perception’s openness towards a world beyond the subject, a world that the subject is connected to through its corporeality. It examines how the sensuous ideas of the arts indirectly brings forth the experience of the invisible layers of Being, the latent connections that lines and supports the visible, and how the arts therefore can be said to bring forth a new truth. It examines how these sensuous ideas come into expression, which forms they take. With that the question about form and content, expression and meaning, of the art work is activated. Perception is understood as the simultaneous limit and opening, as the place of the event that creates the world.

Känsla för skådespelarkonst : mot en förståelse av tysta kunskaper och görandets fenomenologi / Feel for Acting : towards an Understanding of Tacit Knowledges and the Phenomenology of Doing

The primary argument in this thesis is that the common assumption that an actor has emotion inside him- or herself which can be evoked and projected outwards is an outdated misconception. A proposition is made to replace this possessive acting model, which underpins the realist tradition and is based on the popularized aspects of Stanislavsky’s system for actor training, by a situational acting model. This new model is founded on the idea that emotion is something that actors “do”. Furthermore, a theory of this situational model is advanced where the actor is seen to perform emotion in an interplay with action in three different ways: in the world symbolically as an expression, of the world phenomenologically as in-sensing or out-sensing, and with the world as a becoming – which opens the actor up to greater forces of nature and society.                                      The material in this thesis has been focused on from both a contextualizing and a theoretic perspective. The contextualizing perspective places the actor’s doing of emotions in a historical context. The theoretic aspect concentrates on how performing emotions is realized in practice, and it proceeds from an analysis of two contemporary Swedish examples: the actresses Lena Endre in the role of Lady Macbeth at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm in a production of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth from 2006, and Mia Skäringer in her stage show Horny as Hell and Really Holy from 2010. In exploring this material, a combination of Paul Ricoeur’s “hermeneutics of suspicion” and Paul Stoller’s ”sensuous scholarship” is applied.           A synthetic theoretical approach is employed that is set on a phenomenological foundation in combination with theories of emotion and affect as well as gender theory and theatre theory. The discussion is informed by Michael Polanyi to gain an understanding of tacit knowledge and the role of kinesthesia; by Simone de Beauvoir to establish a perspective on the body as a situation; by Sara Ahmed to see the potential for a cultural politics of emotion and a queer view of intentionality; and by Maurice Merleau-Ponty to propose a way of looking at the human being as being of the world as opposed to in the world. Interpretations of a few of Gilles Deleuze’s and Félix Guattari’s concepts such as rhizome, becoming, and body without organs, are added to this list in order to provide a background for what the third way of doing emotion is about.

Fyra pedagogers skilda uppfattningar om utomhuspedagogik som fenomen

Syftet med vårt examensarbete har varit att undersöka hur några valda pedagoger förhåller sig till utomhuspedagogik som en pedagogisk undervisningsmetod och diskutera dessa olika perspektiv av vad pedagogerna säger utifrån frågeställningarna i vårt syfte. Med hjälp av intervjuer har vi ställt frågor till fyra utvalda pedagoger som besitter skilda kunskaper och erfarenheter av utomhuspedagogik. I litteraturstudien mötte vi begrepp som forskare och teoretiker förknippade med utomhuspedagogik. Begrepp som direktkontakterfarenhet, sinnlig erfarenhet, autentisk lärandemiljö. Resultatet åskådliggör att pedagogerna ser fler fördelar än nackdelar med utomhuspedagogik. Några fördelar gällande utomhuspedagogiken framkom som mer rörelse i lärandet, bättre hälsa och att lära om objekt i sin verkliga miljö m.fl. En nackdel som flera av pedagogerna var överens om var personalbrist, tidsbristen gällande planering och de praktiska förberedelserna. Pedagogerna visade olika intresse för utomhuspedagogik men alla var överens om att det var en bra undervisningsmetod och några av dem ville gärna använda sig mer av det i sin undervisning i framtiden.
