Breaking down the wall of difficulty : Adapting a translation for new readers

Svensson, Filip January 2010 (has links)
This study is an analysis of a translation of the text ”A Lotta Night Music: The Sound of Film Noir” written by Richard R. Ness. The study focuses on the adaption of film and music terminology as well as complex sentence structures for a new and broader target audience. The analysis was accomplished with the help of Marianne Lederer’s theory of deverbalization and re-expression. Furthermore, Vinay and Darbelnet’s methodology for translation was utilized along with Andrew Chesterman’s syntactic strategies in order to help clarify the restructuring.                       First of all, concerning film and music terminology, the main issue of interest was how to best adapt the terms for the target readers. From the analysis of various examples of difficult terminology it was concluded that the strategy best used for the different terms depends on the presupposed knowledge of the target reader. Whether you borrow, translate literally or adapt is a matter of how much the target reader knows beforehand.                       Secondly, as for the complex sentence structures of this highly academic text, the extensive, highly hypotactic sentences were extracted and broken down into shorter sentences while keeping the author’s message intact. In this way, the readability was increased and hence the text was adapted for a wider target audience. Moreover, the fact that readability increased was proven with the aid of LIX, a means of measuring the degree of difficulty of a specific text.                       Finally, it has been determined in this study that, although this particular text is still highly academic, breaking down overly long sentences generally helps to increase readability without compromising the author’s intended message.

To Translate and Adapt a text with Long Sentences : With Focus on Readability

Nyqvist, Anna January 2012 (has links)
When translating from English into Swedish long sentences may be a problem. In this paper an academic text with long sentences and an abstract content is translated and adapted for a larger target reader group. The strategies used in this process of translation and adaptation to make the text more readable are analysed regarding changes in sentence structure, noun phrases and connectors. The terminology of Vinay and Darbelnet’s theoretical model for translation strategies is used to describe some of the changes found. Transposition, such as changes from nouns to verbs and modulation, such as changing from abstract to concrete are frequently used strategies in the process of making the translation adapted for new readers. Furthermore, long sentences have been broken into two or more shorter ones and in this process the importance of connectors has increased to keep the information together. To see the effects of the changes LIX and the ratio between number of nouns and verbs have been used. The LIX value decreased from 64 till 56 for the whole text and the noun verb ratio decreased in all the sentences analysed.

A semiotic analysis of user manuals for two blender brands

Jensel, Leanne C.L. January 2016 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / Technical documentation comes in a variety of forms such as installation or operation manuals, quick reference guides, maintenance manuals, user manuals, policy and procedure manuals or marketing brochures and flyers (Walsh, 2012). What all these sub-genres have in common is that the texts that correspond to them seek to inform and give instruction about procedures, behaviour and actions related to products (Schäffner & Wiesemann, 2001: 49). Manuals have been described as “the complete reference source for a product’s operation, maintenance and safety” (Cowley & Wogalter, 2011: 1773). For the purpose of this study, we will focus on one form of technical documentation, namely user manuals. The terms “documentation” and “manuals” will be used interchangeably. Although there are probably as many manuals as there are products in our homes, these user manuals have not frequently been the subject of academic study in the South African context. The relative lack of research into user manuals is especially regrettable at a time when new product liability legislation and trade regulations (e.g. the Consumer Protect Act of South Africa, 2008) have enhanced the profile of product manuals in public and regulatory discourse. As a result of this relative neglect, it is not known how understandable, relevant and therefore empowering users of products find these manuals. There is also not much knowledge concerning the level of compliance in manuals to the provisions of product liability legislation. This study therefore proposes to investigate the comprehensibility and usability of user manuals associated with two products (blenders) marketed in South Africa. It will draw on theories and methods of analysis associated with technical writing, analysis of terminological consistency, genre and multimodality, to evaluate the selected manuals from the standpoint of a subset of the criteria listed in Section 22(2) of the Consumer Protection Act of South Africa, No. 68 of 2008, which was later amended in 2011. The methodology for the proposed study will combine text analysis (by the researcher) with comprehension and usability tasks performed by selected participants. Data from these sources will be collated and analysed to determine the conformity of the manuals to criteria in the Consumer Protection Act of South Africa, and the effect the manuals have on product users. Areas for optimising (improving) the manuals will also be identified.

Effects of Reading Comprehension and Fluency Abilities on the N400 Event-Related Potential

Nelson, Annie Hirt 01 July 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to add to the knowledge of reading development by investigating reading processes from a neurocognitive and educational perspective. This study seeks to provide some insight about reading development for the neuroscience field. The goals of this study are to attain a clearer picture of reading development by using both behavioral assessments and event-related potentials (ERPs), and to begin to bridge the gap between both fields of study. Children between the ages of 7 and 13 were placed in one of two groups depending on their reading comprehension levels for the first analyses, and reading fluency levels for the second analyses. Children were asked to read active, active violation, passive and passive violation sentences, that had been manipulated to contain primed semantic context. Brain waves were recorded during the task. Repeated measures ANOVAS were used to analyze the mean N400 like amplitudes for the groups for the sentence ending target words. The lower fluency group had the largest amplitudes for all sentence types even though the sentences were two grade levels below their actual fluency levels; decoding and reading rate were not a problem for them in the reading task. Also, the lower fluency group processed the anomalous sentences very differently than the lower comprehension group whose average age was close to the same. Other N400 like amplitudes differences among the groups were observed. Implications for reading education consist of reintroducing the sentence processing exercises back into the classroom instruction in order to improve reading comprehension skills among fluent readers with comprehension problems.

Was it written for your audience? : Readability analyses of the information provided in English on a Swedish municipality’s website

Boyd, Petra January 2019 (has links)
In today’s multicultural society it is increasingly important that information is made available in a way that allows it to reach as many people as possible. The present study investigates the readability of the information provided in English on a Swedish municipality’s website. While Umeå Municipality sets a good example when it comes to providing information in foreign languages, the question is how easy the information is to read. The methods used to measure the readability of the texts were three automated readability formulas as well as additional analyses focusing on sentence structure and the number of clauses per word. The results show that despite obvious efforts to follow the guidelines for providing public information, more attention needs to be given to the form of the texts themselves. The complexity of the texts as gauged by the reading formulas was in all cases greater than what is recommended for information written for the general public. Some of the texts would seem to require the reader to have a college degree to fully comprehend the information. The supplementary analyses, especially when it comes to the number of clauses per sentence, confirmed the complexity of the texts. The importance of ‘writing for your audience’ thus seems to have been neglected for parts of the analysed material, which implies that some readers may not fully understand their rights and responsibilities regarding the areas addressed on the municipality’s website.

Funkcinė stilistinė sintaksinių priemonių diferenciacija V. Juknaitės tekstuose / Functional stylistic measures of syntactic differentiation in V. Juknaitė texts

Pranskevičiūtė, Inga 11 July 2011 (has links)
Lietuvių kalbos funkcinių stilių skyrimo kriterijai priklauso nuo atskirų tyrinėtojų iškeliamų požymių. Kalbotyros terminų žodyne funkcinis stilius apibūdinamas kaip kalbos atmaina, vartojama tam tikroje žmonių veiklos srityje. Galima skirti tokius funkcinius stilius: buitinį, kanceliarinį, meninį, publicistinį ir mokslinį. Kiekviename funkciniame stiliuje vartojamos skirtingos kalbos priemonės, jos savitai organizuojamos. [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Functional styles of Lithuanian language's criteria depends on the raised features by individual researchers. Functional style in Linguistics Glossary is characterized as a language variety used in a particular area of human activity. Mokinių rašinių sakinio sandara ir funkcijos / Sentence structure and function in schoolchildren‘s essays

Žukauskienė, Dainora 08 August 2013 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / The Lithuanian language is not only prominent in its rich vocabulary but also there are quite a lot of possibilities to express ideas and thoughts using different sentence structures, such as: simple sentences (personal binomial and personal monomial, impersonal, modifications of personal sentences), complex sentences (coordinate, subordinate, parataxis and composite). The tenth form leaver should know all kinds of sentences, sentence structure and its function. He/she should be able to use all his/her theoretical knowledge in practice, it means he/she should be able to speak and write using functional, various sentence structures. The theme of the work – sentence structure and function in schoolchildren‘s essays. Considering essays themselves, a lot of attention is paid to the context, style and form of the essay. There was little research done of sentence syntax and function in schoolchildren’s essays. There was no research done what kind of sentence structure dominate in schoolchildren essays, what sentence structure is rarely used and what makes an influence which sentence structure and function to use. Moreover, it is not clear, if sentence structure becomes more complex according to the schoolchild’s age, comparing schoolchildren’s essays of the 9th–12th form. After examining 60 essays of senior schoolchildren (the 9th–12th form) some statements could be made. Firstly, schoolchildren are really capable of using sentences of various functional styles and different... [to full text]

Les stratégies de traduction dans trois articles d’un journal : Une étude sur la traduction des participes présents et passés du français vers le suédois / Translation Strategies in Three News Articles : A Study of the Translation of Present and Past Participle Phrases from French into Swedish

Kilander, Ulrika January 2022 (has links)
The aim of this study was to analyze the translation of verb constructions with participles from French into Swedish of three news articles from the French magazine Le Point (2021). The articles were published in a special issue dedicated to climate change. The analysis focused on the translation of present and past participle phrases and the strategies involved in the translation process. Gerunds were excluded from the study as well as participles functioning as an adjective in order to limit the study. The present study was based on Eriksson’s model and his definitions of transpositions (Eriksson 1997), which are translation shifts taking place during the translation process. The results showed that most present and past participle phrases were being replaced by relative clauses or by main clauses in Swedish. Many participle phrases were also replaced by other types of phrases or clauses.               Some transpositions were considered as being necessary. They seemed to have been imposed on the text by the inherent grammar structures of the target language, while other translation shifts appeared to be optional. In the latter case, they seemed to have been chosen rather for stylistic reasons, and/or motivated by the personal choice of the translator when several options were available.

Postmoderní romány Alessandra Baricca / Alessandro Baricco's postmodern novels

Přívozníková, Pavla January 2012 (has links)
Tato diplomová práce zmapuje románovou tvorbu současného italského spisovatele Alessandra Baricca. Úvodem bude představen autor v kontextu současné italské prózy. V další části práce nastíníme charakteristiku postmoderního románu, zejména pokud jde o tříštění či dekompozici prostoru, času, příběhu a s tím související žánrovou heterogennost textu.
