Pobreza multidimensional nos municípios brasileiros no ano de 2010: uma aplicação dos conjuntos Fuzzy / Multidimensional poverty in the brazilian cities in the year 2010: an application of fuzzy sets

Brites, Maríndia 23 February 2017 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Poverty is the worst form of human deprivation. The literature on poverty has gone through advances, since the traditional way of measuring poverty through monetary income does not capture all forms of deprivation suffered by people. The advancement of the concept of poverty is to include other important dimensions of people's lives; from the one-dimensional approach to the multidimensional approach. This dissertation, based on Capability Approach of Sen (1981, 1988, 2000), aims to measure multidimensional poverty for Brazilian cities in 2010. Using data from the Census (IBGE), which involved the choice of 16 indicators, five types of indices were constructed: the first four for each of the dimensions (housing conditions, income, access to knowledge and education and health and sanitary conditions), and the last one for the aggregated IFP, through Fuzzy Set Theory that allowed to approach poverty as a complex phenomenon and to generate the relative index of poverty. The results indicate that there is greater poverty in terms of health and sanitary conditions. However, the dimensions of access to knowledge and education and housing conditions also had weight in the multidimensional poverty index. The income dimension is one of less deprivation among cities, which emphasizes the importance of addressing and measuring poverty multidimensionally. The indicators with the greatest deprivations and that deserve greater attention on the part of the public managers are microcomputer with access to internet, washing machine, schooling and the type of sanitary sewage. The characteristics of poverty in the dimensions studied were similar and showed that the regions and states have similar poverty profiles, indicating that the North and Northeast of the country are the regions with the highest number of cities in the situation of very high and high poverty.

Glauco Correa da Cruz Bacic Fratric 07 July 2008 (has links)
This monograph focuses on analyzing the narrative of The Castle, a novel written by the Czech author Franz Kafka, in 1922. It aims at establishing a connection between certain aspects within the text which may have a metaphorical association with themes related to not only the authors life experiences, but also any other modern mans. It will be centered on a formal analysis of the novel and on metaphorical aspects within the narrative, which may have a negative connotation linked with power, represented by bureaucracy, divinization and space. Afterwards, we will propose a relation of such themes to the set theory from Mathematics, in which a greater set contains a smaller set, also known as a subset. We aim at drawing an analogy of power as a set and its negative connotation with the bureaucratic subset, which are intimately connected. Bureaucracy intersects the two other subsets called divinization and space. Eventually, we will focus on the universality of Kafkas work, which enables the drawing of many other thematic analogies, not only the ones discussed in this set theory proposed in this monograph, due to the fact that Kafkas work is multifaceted in terms of themes.

A rough set approach to bushings fault detection

Mpanza, Lindokuhle Justice 06 June 2012 (has links)
M. Ing. / Fault detection tools have gained popularity in recent years due to the increasing need for reliable and predictable equipments. Transformer bushings account for the majority of transformer faults. Hence, to uphold the integrity of the power transmission and dis- tribution system, a tool to detect and identify faults in their developing stage is necessary in transformer bushings. Among the numerous tools for bushings monitoring, dissolved gas analysis (DGA) is the most commonly used. The advances in DGA and data storage capabilities have resulted in large amount of data and ultimately, the data analysis crisis. Consequent to that, computational intelligence methods have advanced to deal with this data analysis problem and help in the decision-making process. Numerous computational intelligence approaches have been proposed for bushing fault detection. Most of these approaches focus on the accuracy of prediction and not much research has been allocated to investigate the interpretability of the decisions derived from these systems. This work proposes a rough set theory (RST) model for bushing fault detection based on DGA data analyzed using the IEEEc57.104 and the IEC 60599 standards. RST is a rule-based technique suitable for analyzing vague, uncertain and imprecise data. RST extracts rules from the data to model the system. These rules are used for prediction and interpreting the decision process. The lesser the number of rules, the easier it is to interpret the model. The performance of the RST is dependent on the discretization technique employed. An equal frequency bin (EFB), Boolean reasoning (BR) and entropy partition (EP) are used to develop an RST model. The model trained using EFB data performs better than the models trained using BR and EP. The accuracy achieved is 96.4%, 96.0% and 91.3% for EFB, BR and EP respectively. This work also pro poses an ant colony optimization (ACO) for discretization. A model created using ACO discretized achieved an accuracy of 96.1%, which is compatible with the three methods above. When considering the overall performance, the ACO is a better discretization tool since it produces an accurate model with the least number of rules. The rough set tool proposed in this work is benchmarked against a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) and radial basis function (RBF) neural networks. Results prove that RST modeling for bushing is equally as capable as the MLP and better than RBF. The RST, MLP and RBF are used in an ensemble of classifiers. The ensemble performs better than the standalone models.

Summarizing Data using Partially Ordered Set Theory: An Application to Fiscal Frameworks in 97 Countries

Bachtrögler, Julia, Badinger, Harald, Fichet de Clairfontaine, Aurélien, Reuter, Wolf Heinrich 08 1900 (has links) (PDF)
The widespread use of composite indices has often been motivated by their practicality to quantify qualitative data in an easy and intuitive way. At the same time, this approach has been challenged due to the subjective and partly ad hoc nature of computation, aggregation and weighting techniques as well as the handling of missing data. Partially ordered set (POSET) theory offers an alternative approach for summarizing qualitative data in terms of quantitative indices, which relies on a computation scheme that fully exploits the available information and does not require the subjective assignment of weights. The present paper makes the case for an increased use of POSET theory in the social sciences and provides a comparison of POSET indices and composite indices (from previous studies) measuring the 'stringency' of fiscal frameworks using data from the OECD Budget Practices and Procedures survey (2007/08). A mathematical basis for medication prescriptions and adherence

Diemert, Simon 25 August 2017 (has links)
Medication prescriptions constitute an important type of clinical intervention. Medication adherence is the degree to which a patient consumes their medication as agreed upon with a prescriber. Despite many years of research, medication non-adherence continues to be a problem of note, partially due to its multi-faceted in nature. Numerous interventions have attempted to improve adherence but none have emerged as definitive. A significant sub-problem is the lack of consensus regarding definitions and measurement of adherence. Several recent reviews indicate that discrepancies in definitions, measurement techniques, and study methodologies make it impossible to draw strong conclusions via meta-analyses of the literature. Technological interventions aimed at improving adherence have been the subject of ongoing research. Due to the increasing prevalence of the Internet of Things, technology can be used to provide a continuous stream of data regarding a patient's behaviour. To date, several researchers have proposed interventions that leverage data from the Internet of Things, however none have established an acceptable means of analyzing and acting upon this wealth of data. This thesis introduces a computational definition for adherence that can be used to support continued development of technological adherence interventions. A central part of the proposed definition is a formal language for specifying prescriptions that uses fuzzy set theory to accommodate imprecise concepts commonly found in natural language medication prescriptions. A prescription specified in this language can be transformed into an evaluation function which can be used to score the adherence of a given medication taking behaviour. Additionally, the evaluator function is applied to the problem of scheduling medication administrations. A compiler for the proposed language was implemented and had its breadth of expression and clinical accuracy evaluated. The results indicate that the proposed computational definition of adherence is acceptable as a proof of concept and merits further works. / Graduate

Three Topics in Descriptive Set Theory

Kieftenbeld, Vincent 05 1900 (has links)
This dissertation deals with three topics in descriptive set theory. First, the order topology is a natural topology on ordinals. In Chapter 2, a complete classification of order topologies on ordinals up to Borel isomorphism is given, answering a question of Benedikt Löwe. Second, a map between separable metrizable spaces X and Y preserves complete metrizability if Y is completely metrizable whenever X is; the map is resolvable if the image of every open (closed) set in X is resolvable in Y. In Chapter 3, it is proven that resolvable maps preserve complete metrizability, generalizing results of Sierpiński, Vainštein, and Ostrovsky. Third, an equivalence relation on a Polish space has the Laczkovich-Komjáth property if the following holds: for every sequence of analytic sets such that the limit superior along any infinite set of indices meets uncountably many equivalence classes, there is an infinite subsequence such that the intersection of these sets contains a perfect set of pairwise inequivalent elements. In Chapter 4, it is shown that every coanalytic equivalence relation has the Laczkovich-Komjáth property, extending a theorem of Balcerzak and Głąb.

Formalisation mathématique, univers compositionnels et interprétation analytique chez Milton Babbitt et Iannis Xenakis / Mathematical Formalization, Compositional Universes and Analytical Interpretation in Works by Milton Babbitt and Iannis Xenakis

Schaub, Stéphan 18 December 2009 (has links)
This thesis explores the links between mathematical formalization, its implications in compositional practices, and its repercussions on the analytical interpretation. It is based on the study of Milton Babbitt’s Semi-Simple Variations for piano (1956), on Iannis Xenakis’ Nomos Alpha for violoncello (1965-1966), and on a selection of theoretical texts published by the composers around these two works. The argumentation is divided in three parts. The first studies the theoretical texts with the aim of extracting from them the components that are formalized (or result form formalization) as well as the indices pointing towards their implications in the compositional practices. These are then put into sharper view in the second part, through the reconstruction of the traces left by these components in the musical texts (“theoretical models”). This reconstruction is first conducted on the two main works considered before other works are considered. The theoretical models of two of them had until now remained unknown: Three Compositions for Piano by Babbitt (1947-1948) ; and Akrata for 16 winds (1964-1965) by Xenakis. The third part submits Semi-Simple Variations and Nomos Alpha to two analyses: one is aimed at the theoretical models, directly linked to the formal universes, the second examines the musical surfaces and at the way they articulate and/or contradict the elements observed in the models. While underlining the fundamental - though very different - role played by mathematical formalization in Babbitt’s and Xenakis’ compositional universes, the distance that separates the theoretical models from the musical surfaces brings one to consider the role of the former within the analytical enterprise as essentially heuristic. As traces of the composer’s thinking, the theoretical models may however suggest new approaches and deserve to be fully integrated in future research.

Measurable Selection Theorems for Partitions of Polish Spaces into Gδ Equivalence Classes

Simrin, Harry S. 05 1900 (has links)
Let X be a Polish space and Q a measurable partition of X into Gδ equivalence classes. In 1978, S. M. Srivastava proved the existence of a Borel cross section for Q. He asked whether more can be concluded in case each equivalence class is uncountable. This question is answered here in the affirmative. The main result of the author is a proof that shows the existence of a Castaing Representation for Q.
