O presente trabalho tem por objetivo investigar os contornos da política sexual concebida e implementada pela ditadura civil-militar (1964-1988). Marcado centralmente pelo lema da defesa da \"moral e dos bons costumes\", o regime autoritário brasileiro estruturou um complexo aparato repressivo orientado não apenas para eliminar dissidentes políticos, mas também para regular e normalizar os corpos marcados por orientação sexual e/ou identidade de gênero dissidentes. Para isso, foi preciso fazer convergir a atuação de diversas agências estatais que integravam as comunidades de informações, segurança e de censura em torno de uma agenda moral comum, apesar das disputas e tensões entre elas. Segundo essa perspectiva, erotismo, pornografia, homossexualidades e transgeneridades eram classificados como temas e práticas ameaçadores não apenas contra a estabilidade política e a segurança nacional, mas também contra a ordem sexual, a família tradicional e os valores éticos que, supostamente, integravam a sociedade brasileira. Cerceamento da produção cultural, repressão policial nas ruas, vigilância do nascente movimento homossexual e perseguição a seus veículos de expressão e comunicação foram algumas medidas de violência implementadas por diferentes órgãos repressivos e que são examinadas detalhadamente. A partir de uma minuciosa pesquisa nos acervos documentais produzidos pelos próprios órgãos encarregados da repressão, bem como de uma revisão bibliográfica da literatura existente, esta pesquisa pretende demonstrar como as questões comportamentais e sexuais foram centrais para o projeto da \"utopia autoritária\", ressaltando uma dimensão muitas vezes negligenciada tanto nas reflexões acadêmicas quanto no trabalho de memória sobre esse período. / The present thesis aims to investigate the contours of the sexual politics conceived and implemented by the civilian-military dictatorship (1964 - 1988). Centrally marked by the motto of the defense of \"morality and good behavior\", the Brazilian authoritarian regime structured a complex repressive apparatus oriented not only to eliminate political dissidents, but also to regulate and normalize bodies marked by sexual orientation and / or gender identity dissidents. In order to do so, it was necessary to bring together the activities of several state agencies that integrated the information, security and censorship communities around a common moral agenda, despite the disputes and tensions among them. According to this perspective, eroticism, pornography, homosexuality, and transgenderism were classified as threatening themes and practices not only against political stability and national security, but also against the sexual order, the traditional family, and the ethical values that supposedly integrated Brazilian society. The curbing of cultural production, police repression on the streets, surveillance of the nascent homosexual movement, and persecution of its vehicles of expression and communication were some violent measures implemented by different repressive organs and examined in detail. Based on a thorough research in the documentary collections produced by the agencies responsible for repression, as well as a bibliographical review of the existing literature, this research seeks to demonstrate how behavioral and sexual issues were central to the project of \"authoritarian utopia,\" emphasizing a dimension often neglected in both academic reflections and the work about the memory of this period.

By employing pláticas y encuentros, this qualitative study examined the testimonios of Chicana/Latina youth and their experiences with navigating the sexual politics on the high school campus. Six young Chicana/Latinas, all of whom graduated from the same high school in South East Los Angeles, participated in the study. The study used two frameworks: Chicana/Latina feminist theory and critical pedagogy to analyze the young women’s testimonios. Findings speak of their daily struggle with adults policing, objectifying, and containing their bodies; as well as the benefit of a third space, counterspaces, for self-actualization. This study contributes to this field by identifying how Chicana/Latina youth experience schooling and what they believe must happen in order to ensure that the school community and larger society is more responsive to their experiences with navigating sexual politics in and outside of the educational context.

Definitions of sexual orientation are reflections of theoretical positions within the essentialist versus social constructionist debate. A cognitive sociological approach to analyzing the positions within this debate allows theorists and researchers to be aware of three distinct theoretical positions or thought communities: natural kinds thought community, social kinds thought community, and empty kinds thought community. Standard content analysis and grounded theory methods are used to analyze the principles, strategies, and practices each thought community uses to mark group membership into various sexual categories. The analysis reveals that each theoretical perspective is marking group membership differently.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / O presente trabalho se insere nos estudos de diversidade sexual e de gênero na sua relação com a implementação do Programa Rio sem Homofobia como parte do processo de cidadanização de lésbicas, gays, bissexuais, travestis e transexuais (LGBT) no contexto Fluminense. O Programa instituiu a fundação de Centros de Cidadania LGBT (CC) que contam com profissionais para atenderem essas pessoas. O trabalho de campo teve por objetivo principal a observação da interação entre profissionais e usuário (as) nos atendimentos e acompanhamentos realizados nestes locais. Através desta observação, buscou-se compreender os processos pelos quais se constroem demandas a serem encaminhadas para outros serviços. Inspirada em reflexões pós-estruturalistas e pós-colonialistas, tentou-se refletir sobre o processo de cidadanização LGBT e processos sociais globais, em que o Estado brasileiro aparece como ator-chave na formulação de políticas identitárias, ou "focalistas", o que para muitos profissionais no campo das políticas sociais torna-se o foco de um intenso debate. Observou-se a interação entre profissionais e usuário (as) a partir de conceituações de Strauss (1997) sobre identidade como sendo construídas no decorrer da interação. Ao longo do trabalho apresentam-se os casos emblemáticos em que há uma perturbação na interação e em seu status, como uma forma de ruído na comunicação entre os envolvidos no atendimento.

This thesis discusses the contrasting publication and reception histories of Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre (1847) and Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights (1847) and the complex role of Victorian gender norms in shaping those histories. In addition, the thesis examines the interplay between the Brontes’ works and their dialogues with Victorian gender norms and expectations of women on the creation of modern intertextual interpretations such as the Twilight (2005) and Fifty Shades of Grey (2011) novel series. The publication histories of Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights can be best understood in relation to the social context provided by the gender norms and pressures that governed (or sought to govern) women’s behavior during the nineteenth century. Emily and Charlotte’s novels both opposed these gendered social norms to varying degrees but received widely different receptions during their lifetimes. Emily’s text was relatively negatively received and Charlotte attained literary success. An analysis and discussion of the interplay between their publication histories, the social norms and pressures that shaped those histories, and contemporary responses to the main female and male characters in their novels, Catherine Earnshaw, Heathcliff, Edgar Linton, Jane Eyre, and Mr. Rochester, can shed light on their opposing receptions. In addition, this thesis explores how a gendered analysis of the effect of Victorian social norms and pressures on these texts and their receptions illuminates how modern appropriations by popular series novels Twilight and Fifty Shades of Grey interpret anew the gender tropes the Brontes explored in their narratives. The characters in these novels, this thesis argues, follow a comparably gendered pattern of behavior in comparison to their literary predecessors. This thesis reads the female and male characters created by E.L. James and Stephenie Meyer for the ways they echo both the characterizations in the Bronte novels and the social and gendered pressures to which they conform. The connected characterization highlights female self-consciousness, morality and sexual innocence, and a desire for wealthy dominant male partners with sexual and emotional dysfunction. Finally, it is important to place this discussion within the wider cultural narrative that includes contemporary cultural engagement with these ‘popular’ interpretations of the Brontes’ work as a piece that fits into the larger archive of women’s culture.
