It is an ethnographic case study with the participation of ten students of a public high school in the city of Goiânia, Goiás. Data collection was undertaken in a blended one-semester course in which the Moodle platform was used. The following five short stories were selected to be read and discussed with the students: “The Dishonest Friend”, by W. H. D. Rouse; “The Story of an Hour” and “Desiree’s Baby”, by Kate Chopin; “Once There Was a King”, by Rabindranath Tagore and “The Gift of the Magi”, by O. Henry. The study used the following instruments of investigation: questionnaires, registration of virtual interactions, semi-structured interviews and field notes. To establish a dialogue between literature and language teaching, the research study was based on Kramsch (1993), Brooks (2001), Valdes (2001), and Rees (2003). Definitions of the term culture are given and the intrinsic relation between language and culture is explained (AGAR, 2006). The data are also analyzed according to Iser (1978) and the model of cultural domains suggested by Spradley (1980). The data showed that the adoption of an intercultural approach to the process of reading short stories is very important for teachers who aim at discussing and reflecting on L1/C1 and L2/C2 in their classrooms, and thus contribute to avoid the spread of stereotypes. The present study offers contributions to studies that seek to understand and adopt an intercultural approach to teaching presenting suggestions to teachers who aim to deal with those themes in the foreign language classroom. Foram selecionados cinco contos para ser trabalhados com os alunos participantes do curso, a saber: “The dishonest friend”, de W. H. D. Rouse; “The story of an hour” e “Desiree’s baby”, de Kate Chopin; “Once there was a king”, de Rabindranath Tagore e “The gift of the Magi”, de O. Henry. O referencial teórico do trabalho apresenta ainda algumas definições do termo cultura e explicita a relação intrínseca entre língua e cultura (AGAR, 2006).

Dimensões do herói moçambicano em As andorinhas de Paulina Chiziane / Dimensions of Mozambican hero in Andorinhas of Paulina Chiziane

Igor Fernando Xanthopulo Carmo 06 March 2015 (has links)
The present paper aims to study the representation of the hero in the literary work The Swallows, from Paulina Chiziane, published in Maputo (2008) and in Brazil (2013). The short stories are inspired by important historical figures to the formation of Mozambican identity. These national heroes, however, are narrated as characters from the mythological universe. In order to understand the purpose of the literary work within the social and historical context of Mozambique, this paper analyzes the hero both for its symbolic representation, as for its role in the formation of a national identity in opposition to the colonial system and its ills process. Therefore, the theme of the pursuit of freedom permeates this trilogy and puts the hero as the representative of the social transformations in historical time and representative of the deities in the mythological time.

A (des)socialização do negro em Kinaxixe, de Arnaldo Santos / The socializing and the dissocializing of the black people in Kinaxixe by Arnaldo Santos

Sérgio Ricardo Rorato 18 October 2016 (has links)
This present paper aims to study the assimilation process imposed on the populations of the Angolan territory in the 1950s and in the 1960s seen in the literary work Kinaxixe, by Arnaldo Santos, published in Lisbon, Portugal in 1965 and in Brazil, in 1981. The nine short stories reflect the tense coexistence among black people, mixed race people and white people in the musseques (slums) and neighborhoods that surround the coast of Luanda. At this time, the largest Portuguese migration to the African territory took place. Through some laws such as the Estatuto do Indigenato, from 1954 and the Acto Colonial, from 1933, the social differences were even more stimulated. These legal spheres were based on Darwinist theories from the 19th century read in a patriarchal repressive and classicist way separating the populations in non-civilized or assimilated making the Portuguese, on the other hand, supposedly, civilized. Therefore, according to these thoughts, the Portuguese were prepared to colonize the Angolan population through, also a supposed, cultural and social superiority.

Pirandello e a máscara animal / Pirandello and the animal mask

Francisco José Saraiva Degani 25 June 2014 (has links)
The prose works of Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936), particularly his short stories, is permeated by the presence of a rich and varied animal world. The author, as a keen observer of his time, recognizes the importance of animals in the culture and development of civilization. Natural mirrors of the human being, capable of suffering and understanding this suffering, agents of natures chance and impassivity, animals fall perfectly into the poetics of the author. In Pirandello, the animal is a character who acts and behaves like a character from Pirandello, but, unlike the human character, it shows its own face, without disguises, compromises and masks. This study seeks to examine and draw attention to this understudied but important aspect of the work of Pirandello, relating it to the poetics of the author and the evolution of his work

Imprensa, moda e educação feminina em contos iniciais de Machado de Assis / Press, fashion and women education in Machado de Assis early short stories

Josilene Lucas da Silva 11 September 2017 (has links)
This thesis studies references to fashion in the short stories The woman in black and Miss Dollar, collected in the compilation \"Contos Fluminenses\" by Machado de Assis. We consider the relationship between this theme and the internal elements of meaning in these stories, the social context in which the stories were produced and the authors role in the 19th century press, particularly his contributions to the female magazine Jornal das Famílias. During the period when The woman in Black and Miss Dollar were published, a new way to educate women according to the new habits of urban life was a topic of debate. Therefore, this work analyzes the new type of education proposed for this group, which included reading and writing and stimulated a taste for reading sentimental narratives. The author used references to fashion and other accessories of personal adornment in the composition of the characters meanwhile he criticized the decorative excess of clothing, the womens education and the aesthetic principles of Romanticism and Realism.

Edição anotada de Mucufos, coletânea de contos inédita de Valdomiro Silveira / Annotated edition of Mucufos, unpublished collection of short stories by Valdomiro Silveira

Alexandre de Oliveira Barbosa 26 September 2007 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on the annotated edition of an unpublished book of short stories, Mucufos, by Valdomiro Silveira. The introduction situates this book in a historical context, explaining critical views on the collected works of the writer, involving social, human, esthetical and linguistic aspects. It describes the short story collection of Mucufos found in two files named Mucufos and Originaes manuscriptos de Papae (especially valuable) in the Valdomiro Silveira Archive (IEB/ USP), and explains the criteria adopted for the edition. The aim of this edition was to establish an authentic edition emanating from a comparison between a reproduction by CLSD (Carmen Lydia de Souza Dias), autographs, typewritten sheets and printed papers found in the files and in the Office of Public Records. Apart from this comparison, a critical transcript of the short stories was chosen, in an attempt to preserve archaisms and regionalisms in these stories. Two types of footnotes were established from the transcript. The first note, named CLSD Note, indicates newspapers of the time period when most of the short stories were published, with publication date and location, as well as location and date when the stories were written. The second note, named Edition Note, indicates the file where the story was found, explaining some words of regional character. In an analysis of the short stories, there was an attempt to put in doubt the tenor of realism, with contribution from the category of realism, according to Georg Lukács; esthetical features, description of the elements, and main topics and motives were also analyzed. In the latter, violence and its esthetical treatment are highlighted. The writer\'s view of Brazil can be inferred from the analyses. Therefore, the current dissertation seeks to salvage part of the artistic legacy of a writer who was very concerned with humanizing an individual who had been marginalized in our literature until then, i.e. the hillbilly, and discuss the main esthetical and ideological issues that appear in the analyses of the 24 short stories of the edition.

Uma vaga promessa: aspectos do erotismo em contos de Caio Fernando Abreu / A vague promise: aspects of eroticism in Caio Fernando Abreus short stories

Thais Torres de Souza 08 August 2014 (has links)
In most of his books, the author presents characters that deal with a dominant desire, but also face the impossibility of its total fruition. This dissertation proposes an analysis of this theme, as addressed by Abreu, by focusing on the review of four of his short stories from Morangos Mofados (1982) and Os dragões não conhecem o paraíso (1988). In order to understand how eroticism pervades the selected narratives, the analyses are divided in two parts. In the first one, I analyze two short stories focused on erotic initiation: Sargento Garcia and Uma praiazinha de areia bem clara, ali, na beira da sanga. In the second part, I present the ways by which eroticism and death are intertwined in two other Abreus short stories: Os sapatinhos vermelhos and Terça-feira gorda. These last ones reveal the idea that death establishes the subject and pleasure finitude. I argue that, in these short stories, eroticism appears more as a promise of fulfillment than a total fruition. Even when accomplished, pleasure is restricted by elements that are external to the subjects, such as societys prejudice, or by the intrinsic condition of individuals and of the self: incompleteness

This dissertation aims to approach the collection of short stories Disturbing Company (2004), by the Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes, analyzing it through the prism of the fantastic literature. However, rather than simply trying to affiliate the stories to the genre in question, and thus obeying affiliation criteria, we choose to work with the notion of literary dialogue, which is the point of view the author himself encourages to the critical perception of his work. From this reason, we will analyze the position of the fantastic short story in contemporaneity, clarifying its reconfiguration during the transition of the nineteenth century to the twentieth, which generated atypical literary representations. Therefore, unveiling the potentiality of the fantastic genre in the present days, we will try to establish how the book of Fuentes is a revitalizing manifestation of fantastic literature, and how it is articulated through the literary dialogue and the fictional game. The reading of the stories will be based on three main concepts: the notions of literary heritage and of tradition, according to the Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges, and the concept of Misreading, conceived by the North-American critic Harold Bloom.

"The wings of whipped butterflies" : trauma, silence and representation of the suffering child in selected contemporary African short fiction

Njovane, Thandokazi January 2013 (has links)
This dissertation, which examines the literary representation of childhood trauma, is held together by three threads of inquiry. Firstly, I examine the stylistic devices through which three contemporary African writers – NoViolet Bulawayo, Uwem Akpan, and Mia Couto – engage with the subject of childhood trauma in five of their short stories: “Hitting Budapest”; “My Parents’ Bedroom” and “Fattening for Gabon”; and “The Day Mabata-bata Exploded” and “The Bird-Dreaming Baobab,” respectively. In each of these narratives, the use of ingén(u)s in the form of child narrators and/or focalisers instantiates a degree of structural irony, premised on the cognitive discrepancy between the protagonists’ perceptions and those of the implied reader. This structural irony then serves to underscore the reality that, though in a general sense the precise nature of traumatic experience cannot be directly communicated in language, this is exacerbated in the case of children, because children’s physical and psychological frameworks are underdeveloped. Consequently, children’s exposure to trauma and atrocity results in disruptions of both personal and communal notions of safety and security which are even more severe than those experienced by adults. Secondly, I analyse the political, cultural and economic factors which give rise to the traumatic incidents depicted in the stories, and the child characters’ interpretations and responses to these exigencies. Notions of subjectivity and intersubjectivity, identity and community, victimhood and survival, agency and disempowerment are discussed here in relation to the context of postcolonial Africa and the contemporary realities of chronic poverty, genocide, child-trafficking, the aftermath of civil war, and the legacies of colonialism and racism. Thirdly, this dissertation inspects the areas of congruence and divergence between trauma theory, literary scholarship on trauma narratives, and literary attempts to represent atrocity and trauma despite what is widely held to be the inadequacy of language – and therefore representation – to this task. There are certain differences between the three authors’ depictions of children’s experiences of trauma, despite the fact that the texts all grapple with the aporetic nature of trauma and the paradox of representing the unrepresentable. To this end, they utilise various strategies – temporal disjunctions and fragmentations, silences and lacunae, elements of the fantastical and surreal, magical realism, and instances of abjection and dissociation – to gesture towards the inexpressible, or that which is incommensurable with language. I argue that, ultimately, it is the endings of these stories which suggest the unrepresentable nature of trauma. Traumatic experience poses a challenge to representational conventions and, in its resistance, encourages a realisation that new ways of writing and speaking about trauma in the African continent, particularly with regards to children, are needed.

An appraisal of some short stories from H.M. Nkadimeng's Selepe Gomela.

Dikgale, Leuba Peter 17 August 2012 (has links)
M.A. / The primary aim of this study is to make an appraisal of some short stories from H.M Nkadimeng's Selepe Gomela. The concept "appraisal" means to evaluate or to estimate the value, amount, quality or success. Like other literary genres, a short story has certain requirements. There is a great diversity in the form of the short story, but some distinguishing elements are its plot structure, setting, theme, characterization and style. It is in the light of these elements that Nkadimeng's collection Selepe Gomela will be appraised. As the title of this study indicates, only six of the nine short stories will be analysed. They are as follows: Lehumo le tliga bokgoba. Ruri o mpolaile hlogo ye ntsho. Mahlajana a a lahletga a le rufi. Mogwera ke tlo fihla le wena mo o yago. Letuku ke mokadikatga. Ke belegetS'e dithaka. It is hoped that these six short stories will adequately measure Nkadimeng's success or failure in the light of the aforementioned elements. The method of analysis in this study will be based on the existing critiques and some of the outstanding works of short story writers in older literatures such as English, Afrikaans and other African Languages. Attention will also be focused on earlier short story collections of Northern Sotho writers to present - day ones.
