Slovní zásoba internetové komunikace chovatelů domácích zvířat / The vocabulary of the internet communication of the domestic animals' breeders

Hrubá, Andrea January 2020 (has links)
Abstact: The thesis examines the vocabulary of breeders on social networks. For a period of three months, we've been collecting specific language resources in the group of breeders and provides a word-forming and semantic analysis of the found words, including examples of use. It also brings special dictionary of breeder's slang. Based on selected lexemes, it tests the acceptability/unacceptability of specific words outside this interest group. It verifies the hypothesis that these lexemes will be assessed by the non-breeding group as less acceptable or unacceptable.

Slovní zásoba videoher / Vocabulary of videogames

Hanzelková, Eva January 2021 (has links)
This thesis deals with the language of players of video games, especially computer games. The language sample was taken from written as well as spoken sources - magazines, web reviews and Let's Plays - and is limited to action, strategic and RPG games with some overlap with action-adventures. Researched words are mainly keywords of video game players' vocabulary. The goal of this thesis was to describe the language of video game players from several language viewpoints and briefly describe the slang of the players. The first part deals with introducing the researched material, video games as a whole and their history and also the subculture of video game players. The second part analyses the sample in terms of lexical semantics and word formation, describes the extent of adaptation of loanwords, also stabilization of words, neology and the words' affiliation to slang, terminology and common vocabulary. Then the thesis attempts to briefly describe the slang of video game players. Generally, the slang includes a large number of anglicisms and expressions from informatics (in a large part technical terms), while loanwords are adapted to a varying degree. Many expressions in the slang of video game players can also be considered professionalisms given the existence of professional players and...

Cultural Aspect in Anthony Burgess’ Novel A Clockwork Orange: The Translation of Russian “Nadsat” into Lithuanian / Kultūrinis aspektas Anthony‘o Burgesso romane "Prisukamas apelsinas": „Nadsat” kalbos rusiškų žodžių vertimas į lietuvių kalbą

Blonskytė, Marija 17 June 2011 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to compare two Lithuanian translations of A Clockwork Orange in respect of its main stylistic component the Russian “Nadsat”, to examine the intercultural translation problems arising in this translation and strategies invoked by the translators, and make decisions about the quality of the target texts. To reach this aim, descriptive and comparative methods as well as quantitative analysis are applied. The theoretical part of the thesis describes the cultural aspect in translation and translators’ role in dealing with intercultural translation problems. Further, it discusses macro and micro approach to translation, i.e. various strategies for solving intercultural translation problems, giving most attention to borrowings and slang and the difficulties they pose in translation. Moreover, softening and compensation are also presented as the most effective strategies for solving such problems. The analysis begins with the discussion of macro and micro level of problems arising in the “Nadsat” translation. Then, the strategies used by the translators are examined on the grounds of the foreignization and domestication strategies (Venuti), seven micro strategies suggested by Davies, and softening and compensation. The analysis also includes a comparison of quantity and density of borrowings and slang in the ST, TT1 and TT2 as well as of softening and compensation. Moreover, the appendices (A, B and C) include glossaries of borrowings and slang from all... D... [toliau žr. visą tekstą]

Bitch : a case study

Kimrey, Shelley M. 12 August 2011 (has links)
This thesis explores how the term bitch functions as an ideograph in a heavily mediated, third wave moment. Bitch is important to study due to its potentially negative implications for women and feminism. The study attempts to expand rhetorical scholarship’s current understanding of not only the ideograph, but third wave feminism and the current mediated moment. This thesis uses Oprah Winfrey’s announcement to ban the word bitch from her network, OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network), as a case study. I argue that the media that responded to Winfrey’s announcement contributed to a single, overarching narrative that reinforced that the word bitch is harmful to women. This thesis begins with Chapter One, which is an introduction and rationale that explains why the prevalence of bitch in a mediated society is worthy of study. Chapter Two is a review of the literature that explores the history of the word bitch and a consideration of third wave feminism. In Chapter Three, I review the methodology that guides this study by discussing feminist rhetorical criticism, how previous scholarship has treated mediated texts, and consideration of the ideograph. In Chapter Four, I analyze Oprah Winfrey’s ban of the word bitch from OWN. In Chapter Five, I articulate how bitch functioned as an ideograph, the role the media played in the case study, and a consideration of implications for rhetorical scholarship and directions of future research. / Literature -- Critical orientation -- Analysis -- Bitch and empowerment / Access to thesis permanently restricted to Ball State community only / Department of Communication Studies

“Vart har du lärt dig slangspråk?” : “Walla, gatan har lärt mig”. En studie om förekomst och funktion av multietniskt ungdomsspråk i svenska som andraspråksundervisningen

Jensen, Malin January 2019 (has links)

Food Buzzwords: Understanding How Schemas of Proper Dieting Are Formed

Unknown Date (has links)
In the modern United States, the concept of food has become as much of a social phenomenon as it is a biological need. The process of eating has become highly structured into a system of communication. Food terms used to share ideas are referred to as food buzzwords, terms rife with additional meanings whose values are continuously debated, discussed, and altered. Such terminology has swayed how middle-class Americans interpret the proper status quo of food consumption and production. This thesis analyzes how middle-class Americans form their view of a proper diet based on their understanding of food buzzwords and other factors that influence their food choices. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2016. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

"Metalinguagem e oralidade em Monteiro Lobato" / Metalanguage and Orality in Monteiro Lobato

Goh, Simone Strelciunas 16 June 2004 (has links)
The aim of this work is to ransom Monteiro Lobato’s metalanguage presented in a unique and chronological corpus and to demonstrate that it contains orality marks, creating a speech the author himself denominates “conversation in shirt sleeves". We elected the corpus, A Barca de Gleyre, judging this is a special opus, in wich Lobato himself relates his linguistic considerations along forty years in held correspondence with the friend and also writer Godofredo Rangel. A distinguishing vision of the author’s life is represented, are focusing altogether this biography and Monteiro Lobato’s considerations about the language in a synchronal perspective. We show it as it follows, a descriptive summary of the spoken and written modalities of the language, wich helps in Lobato’s reflexions and posture, once the author has already recognized the existence of this two modalities. After that, we increase the theoretical presupposition related to the select aspects for the research are presented. It preceeds to the happening analysis in the author’s speech, in wich concerns his own metalanguage, presence of repetitions, slang and fixed constructions, wich contributes to make the epistolary text in a conversation with a friend, a duo. In the conclusion, it is detached the valuable Lobato’s contribution, that through the opus A Barca de Gleyre, traced a prospect of language and literature during four decades and that demonstrates it through his own linguistic position that is possible to create a critical speech with the presence of repetitions , slang and fixed constructions that corroborates the expressiveness, text interaction and cohesion. It’s worthwhile saying that A Barca was one of the tools that made Lobato to be Lobato for the linguistic practice and disposition that both correspondents kept for so many years.
